Avevamo lasciato gli Evergrey circa due anni fa con il raffinato e rabbioso “The Atlantic”, che sigillava il termine di una trilogia iniziata con “Hymns For The Broken”. Oggi li ritroviamo con il nuovo “Escape Of The Phoenix” (AFM Records), costruito sempre con brani di gran classe, ma allo stesso tempo più spontanei e “liberi” dalla narrazione di un concept album. Del resto la band, ci ha sempre abituati ad un progressive metal fatto con il cuore e l’anima e non basato sul tecnicismo. Ne abbiamo parlato con Jonas Ekdahl, il batterista della band.
“Escape of the Phoenix” è stato scritto e registrato durante il lockdown del 2020 e arriva dopo i tre album di una “trilogia concettuale”, che si è conclusa con “The Atlantic” del 2019. Personalmente ho notato che nelle ultime uscite c’è tutto ciò che i fan della band si aspettano dagli Evergrey: riff thrash, un’atmosfera oscura e malinconica, assoli veloci, incursioni occasionali al prog e molto ritmo. Ti siamo davvero molto grati di aver creato musica così brillante ultimamente, ma cosa possiamo aspettarci di nuovo dall’ultimo album?
In effetti il nuovo album ha tutte le cose che gli Evergrey rappresentano adesso, che hai appena sottolineato. Il fatto è che l’unica cosa su cui ci concentriamo quando si tratta di scrivere e registrare un nuovo album è che vogliamo che la prossima canzone sia sempre migliore dell’ultima. Vogliamo progredire come musicisti, cantautori e produttori. Dal momento in cui non siamo stati più legati ad un storia unica, in questo album siamo stati più liberi e in un certo senso ci è stato possibile inserire espressioni differenti.
Pensi che fermarsi nell’attività dei live show per così tanto tempo, rispetto alla consuetudine, e di dedicare più tempo alla scrittura delle canzoni sia stato rilevante per la qualità delle canzoni di “Escape of the Phoenix”? Pensi che in un altro momento storico questo album avrebbe suonato in maniera differente e avrebbe trattato argomenti diversi? Posso sentire in canzoni come “In Absence of Sun” o “Eternal Nocturnal” la reale mancanza di luci o il calore che puoi ricevere dalle persone in un concerto o in un incontro.
Il fatto che siamo stati in grado di dedicare tutto il tempo per scrivere musica invece di suonare in spettacoli e in tournée è stato molto bello, almeno dal punto di vista della scrittura. Ma non credo che l’album sarebbe stato diverso se avessimo avuto meno tempo per scriverlo. Ci spingiamo sempre al limite per ogni album per renderlo il migliore possibile, non importa quale sia il lasso di tempo.
La fenice è l’uccello longevo che ciclicamente si rigenera e rinasce dalle sue ceneri. Cosa rappresenta per te la “Fuga della Fenice”? Sembra che sia così difficile ora rinascere dal nostro dolore e dai nostri errori. Il concetto per il titolo vuole trasmettere qualcosa senza speranza oppure altro? Questo periodo ci porta il buio ma stiamo cercando la luce, una resurrezione.
“La Fuga della Fenice” rappresenta la liberazione dai vecchi schemi, da qualcosa che ti ha influenzato negativamente per molto tempo e dirigerti invece verso qualcosa di positivo. Puoi sicuramente adattarlo a tutto ciò che sta accadendo nel mondo in questo momento, ma non ha nulla a che fare con la pandemia.
Ogni album ha le potenziali hit che poi diventano canzoni classiche da suonare dal vivo. So che non possiamo pianificare quando vedervi di nuovo sul palco, ma quali canzoni avremo sicuramente il piacere di vedere in una futura scaletta? I singoli ovviamente e poi?
Sì, credo tutti i single. Oltre a questi, voglio davvero suonare “Stories” dal vivo, penso che sarà una grande canzone dal vivo. “In the Absence of Sun”, ‘A Dandelion Cipher” e “Escape of the Phoenix” sono anche sulla mia personale lista di canzoni da suonare live.
La canzone “The Beholder” con Tom che canta in duetto con James LaBrie è uno dei momenti più impressionanti dell’album. I Dream Theater hanno avuto un’influenza molto importante nel sound degli Evergrey e sappiamo che la collaborazione nasce naturalmente con una richiesta via e-mail. Questa canzone è stata scritta pensando a questo duetto o successivamente aver contattato James? Cosa ne pensi delle ultime uscite di DT e LeBrie, non sono più la stessa band che vi ha ispirato?
La musica è stata scritta prima che avessimo in mente la collaborazione con lui, i testi e le melodie sono stati in parte scritti prima, in parte dopo. Proprio come tante band, noi compresi, anche i Dream Theater si sono progrediti e hanno sviluppato il loro suono nel corso degli anni. Personalmente penso che si siano concentrati maggiormente sul loro lato tecnico, un po’ troppo per i miei gusti. I miei album preferiti dei DT sono “Awake” e “Falling into Infinity”. Il loro ultimo album ha però alcune canzoni piuttosto interessanti. Sono ancora una grande band e sono ancora i re del progressive metal.
Essendo un fan di lunga data della band, ricordo il momento difficile per gli Evergrey dopo l’uscita di “Glorious Collision”. Alla rottura con i soci fondatori, Tom è rimasto solo ed i risultati non sono stati molto entusiasmanti. Per fortuna è arrivato “Hymn for The Broken” e da quel momento… avete concepito solo capolavori. Cosa è successo in quel periodo? Cosa ha tenuto in vita la band?
Da quello che ricordo, Tom (e per non dimenticare Rikard, che anche lui era ancora nella band durante questo periodo) stava pensando di fermarsi con gli Evergrey dopo “Glorious”. Ma avevano già firmato per un altro album con l’etichetta. Quando io e Henrik ci siamo riuniti (prima come session) abbiamo scoperto che noi quattro eravamo maturati dalla separazione l’uno dagli altri e c’era un altro tipo di rispetto reciproco. L’energia era molto diversa e questo ha reso tutti entusiasti. Ci siamo resi conto che ci mancava suonare insieme e anche scrivere insieme. Quindi abbiamo ripreso tutto, lentamente ma costantemente, da lì. Quindi “Hymns ..” era una specie di test per vedere se potevamo fare un album insieme o no, volevamo provarlo e vedere se l’alchimia c’era ed evitare di finire dove eravamo dopo l’album “Torn” .
Parliamo di un meraviglioso album adesso che è “In Search of Truth”. Questo ragazzo compie 20 anni quest’anno. Speriamo in un tour per il suo anniversario, se questo sarà possibile. Che cosa ne pensi? Potrà mai succedere? Quali canzoni ti piacciono di più di questo album?
È un album fantastico e un classico degli Evergrey. Ho avuto la fortuna di iniziare a lavorare con la band come tecnico della batteria / tecnico / addetto al merch, proprio nel periodo di uscita dell’album. Tuttavia, non credo che ci sarà un tour per l’anniversario. Quando il mondo aprirà di nuovo le sue porte, la priorità è andare in tour il più possibile con “Escape of the Phoenix” per rendere giustizia a quest’album. In “In Search ..” le mie canzoni preferite sono “Watching the Skies”, “Mark of the Triangle” e “Dark Waters”.
“A Night to Remember”, il DVD e album live, è stato pubblicato nel 2005 ed è un perfetto manifesto di ciò che stavate suonando in quel periodo. Dopo molti album usciti in seguito, con molti nuovi classici aggiunti nei live degli Evergrey, non pensi che sia ora di pubblicare un altro album dal vivo?
Sì, un nuovo DVD sarebbe carino da fare. Da allora abbiamo pubblicato molti album. Dobbiamo però trovare il momento giusto per farlo. Alla fine accadrà, ne sono sicuro.
Quando ascolto la vostra musica mi sento bene con me stesso. Posso raggiungere ogni posto, specialmente i paesi esotici sull’oceano, immagino perché Tom ne parla spesso, guardando il mare dal suo balcone a Stoccolma o da qualche spiaggia della Thailandia. Quale paese ti piace visitare di più quando sei in tour e perché?
Io amo l’Italia. Io e mia moglie andiamo a Milano in vacanza o per un fine settimana il più spesso possibile. L’atmosfera è così bella lì e, naturalmente, il vino e il cibo. Altri paesi che amo sono anche la Spagna, il Brasile e il Canada.

We left Evergrey about two years ago with the refined and angry “The Atlantic”, which has finished the end of a trilogy that began with “Hymns For The Broken”. Today we find them with the new “Escape Of The Phoenix” (AFM Records), always built with high-class songs, but at the same time more spontaneous and “free” from the narration of a concept album. After all, the band has always accustomed us to a progressive metal made with heart and soul and not based on technicality. We talked about it with Jonas Ekdahl, the drummer of the band.
“Escape of the Phoenix” has been written and recorded during the 2020 lockdown and it come after the three albums of a ‘conceptual trilogy,’ which concluded with 2019’s “The Atlantic”. Personally I noticed that in the last releases there is everything the band’s fans have come to expect from Evergrey: thrash riffing, dark and melancholic atmosphere, speed soloing, the occasional foray into prog, and plenty of up-tempo playing. We are very grateful to you to create such brilliant music, but what we can expect of new from the last album?
It has all the things that Evergrey represents, that you just pointed out. The thing is that the only thing we are focused on when it comes to writing and recording a new album is that we want that the next song should be better than the last one. We just want to progress as musicians, songwriters and producers. Since we haven’t been tied to a concept on this album, it has felt a bit more free for different expressions in a way.
Do you think the stop of gigging as much time as usual and to dedicate more time to the songwriting has been relevant for the quality of “Escape of the Phoenix” songs? Do you think in another historical moment this album had would sound different and it would speak about different topics? I can feel in songs such “In Absence of Sun” or “Eternal Nocturnal” the real lack of the lights or the warm that you can receive from people in a gig or in a meet.
The fact that we’ve been able to put all the time on writing music instead of playing show and touring has been very nice, at least from a songwriting perspective. But I don’t think the album would sound different if we’d have less time to write it either. We push ourselves to the limit for every album to make it as good as we possibly can make it, no matter what the time frame is.
The Phoenix is the long-lived bird that cyclically regenerates and born again from her ashes. What’s represent the “Escape of the Phoenix” for you? It seems it’s so much difficult now to reborn from our pain and our mistakes. it’s like something without hopes or other? This period brings us the dark but we are searching the light, a resurrection.
“Escape of the Phoenix” represents breaking free from old patterns, from something that has affected you negatively for a long time and head towards something positive instead. You can surely fit this in with everything that’s going on in the world right now, but it has nothing to do with the pandemic at all.
Every album has potential hits and they become classic songs to play live. I know we can’t plan when to see you guys on stage again, but which songs for sure we will have pleasure to see in a future setlist? The singles of course and then?
Yes I’m guessing the singles. Besides them, I really want to play ‘Stories’ live, I think it will make a great live song. ‘ “In the Absence of Sun”, ‘A Dandelion Cipher” and “Escape of the Phoenix” is on my live setlist as well.
The song “The Beholder” with Tom singing a duet with James LaBrie is one of the most impressive moment of the album. Dream Theatre has been a very important influence in the Evergrey sound and we know the collaboration is born naturally with an email request. Is this song been written thinking about this duet or after? What do you think about latest DT and LeBrie releases, are they not anymore the same band that inspired you?
The music is written before we had the collaboration in mind, the lyrics and melodies were partly written before, partly after. Just as so many bands, us included, Dream Theater has progressed and developed their sound over the years. Personally I think they have put more focus on their technical side a bit too much for my taste. My favorite DT albums are “Awake” and “Falling into Infinity”. Their latest album has some pretty cool songs though. They’re still a great band, and they’re still the kings of progressive metal.
Being a long-time supporter of the band, I remember the difficult time for Evergrey following the release of “Glorious Collision”. The split with the founding members, Tom was left alone and the results were not very enthusiastic. Luckily, “Hymn for The Broken” arrived and from that moment… only masterpieces. What happened during that time? What kept the band alive?
From what I recall, Tom (and not to forget Rikard, who also was still in the band during this time) were talking about putting the band to rest after “Glorious”. But they had already signed for one more album with the label. When me and Henrik re-joined, (first as session players) we discovered that the four of us had matured on our own, from being apart from each other and there was another kind of respect for each other than before we split. The energy was way different, and that made everyone excited. We realized that we had been missing playing together and also writing together. So we took everything, slowly but steady, from there. So “Hymns..” was kind of a test to see whether we could do an album together or not, we wanted to try it out and see if the chemistry was there and to avoid ending up where we were after the “Torn” album.
Let’s talk about a wonderful album is “In Search of Truth”. This boy is turning 20 years old this year. We are hoping for an anniversary tour, if it can be possible. What do you think about? Can it be possible? And which songs you like more of this album?
It’s a great- and a classic Evergrey album. I was lucky enough to start working with the band as a drum tech/ backline tech/ merch guy, just around the release of the album. I don’t think there will be an anniversary tour though. When the world opens up the priority is to tour as much as we can on ‘Escape of the phoenix’ to make that album justice. On “In Search..” my favorite songs are “Watching the Skies”, “Mark of the Triangle” and “Dark Waters”.
“A Night to Remember”, the DVD and live album, has been released in 2005 and it’s a perfect manifesto of what you were playing in that time. After many albums later, with many new songs added as classic Evergrey’s songs, don’t you think it’s time to release another live album with the last releases songs?
Yeah, a new dvd would be nice to do. We’ve released a lot of album since then. We have to find the right time for it though. It will happen eventually, I’m sure.
When I listen to your music I feel good with myself. I can reach every places, especially exotic countries with the ocean, I guess cause Tom talk about this often, watching the sea from his balcony in Stockholm or from some Thailand beach. Which country do you like to visit more when you are touring and why?
I love Italy. Me and my wife go to Milano on vacations or for a weekend as often as we can. The atmosphere is just so nice there, and of course, the wine and food. Another country I also love Spain, Brazil and Canada.
In the end, anything you’d like to say to the Italian fans?
