Thijs van Laarhoven ci tiene a specificare che i Severe Torture non hanno mai stoppato la propria attività, quel che è certo è che noi fan abbiamo dovuto attendere ben 14 anni per poter ascoltare il successore dell’ottimo “Slaughtered”. “Torn from the Jaws of Death” (Season of Mist) è un disco che rende giustizia agli olandesi e li riporta nell’élite delle band estreme europee.
Ciao Thijs, come ci si sente ad avere un nuovo full length da portare in giro per il mondo?
Ciao! È fantastico, abbiamo atteso per anni questo momento, a dire il vero! È sempre bello mostrare al mondo le tue nuove canzoni e questa volta lo è molto di più perché siamo davvero soddisfatti e potrebbe essere il nostro miglior lavoro di sempre!
Seiete cambiati più voi la scena death metal in questi 14 anni?
Non so davvero stabilire cosa sia cambiato di più, ovviamente siamo diventati più vecchi, più grigi e più saggi e la scena death metal è diventata sia old school che più moderna. Le cose cambiano e noi ci adattiamo, questo è tutto ciò che possiamo fare.
Perché vi siete fermati a un certo punto?
Beh, a dire il vero non ci siamo fermati. Dopo aver pubblicato “Slaughtered” nel 2010 abbiamo suonato molti show e abbiamo ricominciato a scrivere, ma la scrittura non ha funzionato. E il tutto è arrivato a un punto in cui è stato davvero frustrante. Dopo aver suonato al Maryland Deathfest nel 2016 abbiamo deciso che sarebbe stato meglio smettere di accettare date e di allontanarci tutti dalla band per un po’, solo per vedere cosa sarebbe successo. Il tempo è volato e dopo un anno il nostro batterista originale Seth ha deciso che voleva lasciare. Il resto della band voleva fare un altro tentativo con un nuovo batterista ed è lì che è intervenuto Damien. Nel 2019 stavamo suonando di nuovo e abbiamo iniziato a scrivere, praticamente da zero e le cose si sono rivelate davvero buone.
Quando hai capito che era giunto il momento di rimettere in moto la macchina?
Penso che dopo un anno in cui non ho fatto cose legate alla band. Siamo rimasti tutti in contatto e ci vedevamo di tanto in tanto ai concerti, quindi abbiamo parlato di come continuare o meno e quando Seth ha deciso di lasciare noi quattro abbiamo organizzato un incontro e abbiamo deciso di cercare un nuovo batterista e dare è un tentativo.
Quanto è stato importante per voi pubblicare l’EP “Fisting the Sockets” per rimuovere un po’ di ruggine dagli ingranaggi?
Molto importante! Avevamo abbastanza canzoni per un album completo, ma abbiamo pensato che ci sarebbe voluto troppo tempo per registrare e pubblicare un album completo e abbiamo deciso che un EP di 3 canzoni sarebbe potuto essere pubblicato molto più velocemente. Un buon modo per dimostrare che siamo tornati e abbiamo avuto anche l’opportunità di provare la registrazione nel nostro studio. È venuto benissimo e penso che siano un paio delle migliori canzoni che abbiamo mai pubblicato!
La band è composta da quattro membri già presenti nella line up dell’album di debutto “Feasting on Blood”, come riuscite a trovare nuovi spunti creativi dopo tanti anni?
Beh, per essere precisi da quando Seth se n’è andato ci sono 3 membri rimasti della formazione “Feasting on Blood” e il nostro chitarrista Marvin è con noi ormai da 21 anni. Continuiamo ad essere ispirati perché amiamo la musica e ci piace suonare death metal. A volte trovi ispirazione ascoltando una nuova band e a volte quando ascolti un vecchio classico.
“Torn from the Jaws of Death” è in linea con la vostra tradizione, ma ti capita in studio di ritrovarti tra le mani delle canzoni che non sono molto Severe Torture e di tagliarle dalla tracklist finale?
No, non proprio. E penso che tutto ciò che scriviamo risulta Severe Torture, anche se pensiamo di fare qualcosa di diverso. Abbiamo una canzone che non abbiamo inserito nell’album ed è un po’ diversa dal resto ma è comunque molto Severe Torture. Potremmo pubblicare quella canzone come singolo più in là.
Quali canzoni di “Torn from the Jaws of Death” eseguirete dal vivo?
Abbiamo già suonato la traccia di apertura “The Death of Everything” e la titletrack nei nostri recenti concerti negli Stati Uniti e in Messico e abbiamo discusso di suonare dal vivo ogni canzone dell’album almeno una volta, solo per vedere come funziona. Chissà, potremmo suonare tutte le canzoni dal vivo.
Le vostre prossime mosse?
Alcuni festival sono in arrivo, questo sabato suoneremo a Barcellona e ad agosto suoneremo al Brutal Assault in Repubblica Ceca. Verranno annunciati altri concerti e inizieremo a lavorare su nuove canzoni per assicurarci che non ci vorranno altri 14 anni per il prossimo album, ahah!
Thijs van Laarhoven is keen to specify that Severe Torture have never stopped their activity, what is certain is that we fans had to wait 14 years to be able to listen to the successor to the excellent “Slaughtered”. “Torn from the Jaws of Death” (Season of Mist) is a record that does justice to the Dutch and brings them back to the elite of European extreme bands.
Hi Thijs, how does it feel to have a new full length to take around the world?
Hi there! It feels great and it was long overdue to be honest! It’s always nice to show the world your new songs and this time it feels very good cause we’re really satisfied and it might be our best work up to date!
Have you or the death metal scene changed more in 14 years?
I can’t really say what has changed the most, of course we got older, grayer and wiser and the death metal scene got both more old school and more modern. Things change and we adapt, that all we can do.
Why did you stop at a certain point?
Well, we didn’t really stop to be honest. After we released ‘Slaughtered’ in 2010 we played a lot of shows and started writing again but the writing just didn’t work out. And that came to a point were it was really frustrating. After we played at Maryland Deathfest in 2016 we decided it would be good to stop booking shows and all step away from the band for a while, just to see what would happen. Time flew by and after a year our original drummer Seth decided he wanted to quit. The rest of the band wanted to give it one more try with a new drummer and that’s where Damien stepped in. In 2019 we were playing shows again and started writing, basically from scratch and that turned out really good.
When did you realize it was time to get the car moving again?
I think after a year of doing no band related stuff. We all kept in contact and saw eachother every now and then at shows so we did talk about how to continue or not to continue and when Seth decided to quit the four of us set up a meeting and decided to look for a new drummer and give it a go.
How important was it for you to release the EP “Fisting the Sockets” to remove some rust from the gears?
Very important! We had enough songs for a complete album but we thought it would take to long to record & release a full album and decided that a 3 song EP could be released much quicker. That would be a good way to show that we are back and we also had the opportunity to check out recording in our own studio. It came out great and I think it’s a couple of the best songs we ever released!
The band is made up of four members already present in the line up of the debut album “Feasting on Blood”, how do you manage to find new creative ideas after so many years?
Well, to be precisesince Seth left it’s 3 remaining members from the “Feasting on Blood” line-up and our guitarplayer Marvin has been in the band for 21 years now. We keep on getting inspiration cause we love music and we enjoy playing death metal. Sometimes you get inspired by listening to a new band and sometimes when your listening to a golden oldie.
“Torn from the Jaws of Death” is in line with your tradition, but do you happen in the studio to take out songs that aren’t very Severe Torture and cut them from the final tracklist?
No, not really. And I think everything we write will turn out to be very Severe Torture, even if we think we are doing something different. We do have a song which we didn’t put on the album and it’s a little different from the rest of the songs but still very Severe Torture. We might release that song as a standalone single later.
Which songs from “Torn from the Jaws of Death” will you perform live?
We already played the opening track ‘The Death of Everything’ and the titletrack at our recent shows in the US and Mexico and we have been talking about trying to play every album song live at least once, just to see how it works in a live show. Who knows, we might play all the songs live.
Your next moves?
Some festivals coming up, this Saturday we play in Barcelona and in August we’re playing Brutal Assault in Czech Republic. Some more shows will be announced and we will start working on new songs to make sure it’s not gonna take another 14 years till the next album, haha!
