La band svedese Veonity è entrata con il nuovo disco “The Final Element” (Scarlet Records) in una nuova fase della propria storia, che vede nell’ingresso del nuovo cantante Isak Stenvall (ex membro dei Lancer) la più grande novità.

Benvenuto su Il Raglio del Mulo, Samuel, direi di iniziare presentando il vostro nuovo cantante, Isak Stenvall… Come siete entrati in contatto con Isak?
Grazie mille, Giuseppe! La storia del nostro nuovo cantante, Isak Stenvall, risale a parecchio tempo fa. Veniamo tutti da una piccola città in Svezia chiamata Vänersborg, e come avviene in quei posti, tutti conoscono tutti. All’inizio degli anni 2000, le nostre strade si sono incrociate per la prima volta e abbiamo formato una band power metal che abbiamo mantenuto per circa un anno. Dopo di che, Isak si è trasferito e ha fondato una nuova band, i Lancer, mentre Anders e io abbiamo formato i Veonity. Tuttavia, siamo rimasti in contatto, ovviamente. Direi che nel corso degli anni, Anders, Isak e io ci siamo incontrati di continuo per parlare, scrivere e respirare power metal. Dopo che Isak ha lasciato i Lancer nel 2018, abbiamo parlato di iniziare un altro progetto o semplicemente di scrivere musica insieme per divertimento. Solo quando Anders un giorno disse che voleva concentrarsi di più sulla chitarra, ci decidemmo a chiedere a Isak di unirsi ai Veonity. Devo dire che siamo tutti molto emozionati di aver finalmente unito le forze.

Tra pochi giorni uscirà il vostro nuovo album, “The Final Element”, qual è stato il contributo di Isak? In qualche modo avere un nuovo cantante ha cambiato il vostro modo di scrivere canzoni?
Isak è un songwriter davvero bravo, come si può sentire negli album della sua precedente band. Ha portato delle idee, soprattutto in termini di struttura delle canzoni, ma ovviamente ha anche sviluppato ulteriormente le nostre idee già esistenti. La maggior parte delle canzoni sono state scritte insieme da Isak e Anders o da me e Isak, il che penso che sia davvero bello perché ogni traccia ha il suo tocco distintivo. Un’altra cosa che pone sempre nuove sfide nella scrittura delle canzoni è l’estensione del cantante e come suona meglio. Anders e Isak hanno gamme tonali leggermente diverse, quindi abbiamo dovuto riarrangiare alcune canzoni già scritte per adattarle al meglio a Isak.

“The Final Element fa parte della saga “The Elements Of Power Chronicles”, qual è la trama di questo nuovo capitolo?
Per coloro che hanno seguito la prima parte della storia, il nostro eroe continua a caricare la Pietra del Potere con gli ultimi elementi rimasti. Si fa strada attraverso alcuni nuovi mostri ed è guidato dal Re degli Inferi. La storia si svolge con l’eroe che si trasforma nel quinto elemento e si sacrifica sull’Altare del Potere in modo che i mostri degli Inferi non possano più scappare nell’Overworld.

I tuoi testi nascondono metafore della vita reale o sono semplicemente trame di pura fantasia e intrattenimento?
Sì, alcune canzoni nascono da esperienze di vita reale e poi tradotte in testi a tema power metal. Lo abbiamo fatto in tutti i nostri album. Ad esempio, “Phoenix Arise” dal primo album parla in realtà di un amico di Anders che ha avuto un divorzio. Nel nostro nuovo album, la canzone “Carry On”, il nostro ultimo singolo, è basata sul ritorno di Isak con noi e al power metal. Abbiamo tutti percorso strade diverse nella vita, ma ora siamo tornati dove apparteniamo.

Ad oggi sono stati pubblicati due singoli, “The Fifth Element” e “Riders Of The Revolution”, perché avete deciso di usare queste due tracce per presentare il nuovo album?
È sempre difficile decidere quali canzoni pubblicare come singoli, e questa volta non ha fatto eccezione, ah ah. Abbiamo scelto “The Fifth Element” perché ha tutti gli elementi dei Veonity: la velocità, le melodie e i cori epici. Abbiamo semplicemente pensato che fosse la scelta perfetta per presentare il nostro nuovo sound. Abbiamo scelto “Riders of the Revolution” perché è un piccolo omaggio agli Hammerfall, che ci hanno influenzato molto nella nostra giovinezza. Volevamo anche dimostrare che a volte possiamo creare canzoni senza tanta doppia cassa, ah ah.

Quale delle nuove canzoni proporrete dal vivo?
Suoneremo sicuramente “The Fifth Element” perché è una specie di traccia principale dell’album. Ma penso che probabilmente suoneremo tutti e tre i singoli dal vivo perché hanno tutti grandi elementi su cui costruire uno spettacolo dal vivo.

Avete delle date in programma?
Sì, abbiamo già alcuni spettacoli programmati per l’anno prossimo, il che è una buona notizia. Siamo stati parecchio tempo senza spettacoli perché ci stavamo preparando per il cambio di formazione. Ma ora siamo pronti a partire. Non vediamo l’ora di partecipare a un festival power metal a Molde, in Norvegia, e un altro ad Amburgo.

Questo è il vostro terzo album pubblicato tramite un’etichetta italiana, la Scarlet Records, qual è il vostro rapporto con l’Italia? Vi siete mai esibiti nel mio paese?
Ne abbiamo parlato e ci piacerebbe molto andarci. L’Italia è un grande paese e non ci abbiamo ancora suonato. Come ho detto prima, in questo momento stiamo pianificando spettacoli per l’anno prossimo, quindi vediamo cosa ci riserva il futuro.

With their new album “The Final Element” (Scarlet Records), the Swedish band Veonity has entered a new phase in their history, with the arrival of new singer Isak Stenvall (former member of Lancer) as the biggest novelty.

Welcome to Il Raglio del Mulo, Samuel, I would say to start by introducing your new singer, Isak Stenvall… How did you get in touch with Isak?
Thank you very much, Giuseppe! The story of our new singer, Isak Stenvall, goes back quite some time. We all come from a small town in Sweden called Vänersborg, and as it is with those kinds of places, everybody knows everybody. At the beginning of the 2000s, our different paths crossed for the first time, and we formed a Power Metal band that we kept up for about a year. After that, Isak moved away and started a new band, Lancer, while Anders and I formed Veonity. However, we of course stayed in contact. I would say that over the years, Anders, Isak, and I continuously met to talk, write, and breathe Power Metal. After Isak left Lancer in 2018, we all
talked about starting another project or just writing music together for fun. It was not until Anders one day said that he wanted to focus more on playing guitar that we came around to ask Isak to join Veonity. I have to say that we are all quite excited to finally have joined forces.

In a few days your new album, “The Final Element”, will be out, what was Isak’s contribution? In some way has having a new singer changed your songwriting?
Isak is a really great songwriter, as you can hear on his previous band’s albums. He came with some ideas, especially in terms of the structure of the songs, but of course he also built further on our already existing ideas. Most of the songs were co-written between Isak and Anders or me and Isak, which I found to be really cool since each track has its own distinct feel to it.
Another thing that always poses new challenges in songwriting is the range of the singer and where he sounds best. Anders and Isak have slightly different tonal ranges, so we had to rearrange some already written songs to fit Isak in the best way.

“The Final Element is part of the saga “The Elements Of Power chronicles”, what is the plot of this new chapter?
For those who followed the first part of the story, our hero continues to charge the Powerstone with the last remaining elements. He fights his way through some new monsters and is guided by the Kings of the Underworld. The story unfolds with the hero turning himself into the fifth element and sacrificing himself on the Altar of Power so that the monsters of the Underworld would not be able to escape into the Overworld again.

Do your lyrics hide metaphors of real life or are they simply plots of pure fantasy and entertainment?
Yes, some songs are born from real-life experiences and then translated into Power Metal-themed lyrics. We have done this throughout our albums. For example, “Phoenix Arise” from the first album is actually about a friend of Anders who went through a divorce. On our new album, the song “Carry On,” our latest single, is based on Isak’s return to us and to Power Metal. We have all wandered different paths in life, but now we are back where we belong.

To date, two singles have been released, “The Fifth Element” and “Riders Of The Revolution”, why did you decide to use these two tracks to present the new album?
It is always difficult to decide which songs should be released as singles, and this time was no exception, ha ha. We chose “The Fifth Element” because it has all the elements of Veonity: the speed, the melodies, and the epic choirs. We just felt that it was the perfect choice to present our new sound. We chose “Riders of the Revolution” because it is a little homage to Hammerfall, which has influenced us a lot in our youth. We also wanted to show that sometimes we can create songs without so much double bass drum, ha ha.

Which of the new songs will you propose live?
We will definitely play “The Fifth Element” since it is kind of the main track of the album. But I think we will probably play all three of the singles live because they all have great elements to build on in a live show.

Do you have any dates planned?
Yes, we have some shows already planned for next year, which is good news. We had quite a long time without any shows because we were preparing for the lineup change. But now we are ready to go. We are looking forward to a Power Metal festival in Molde, Norway, and another in Hamburg.

This is your third album released through an Italian label, Scarlet Records, what is your relationship with Italy? Have you ever performed in my country?
We have talked about it, and we would really like to go there. Italy is a great country, and we have not yet played there. As I said earlier, we are right now booking shows for next year, so let’s see what the future holds for us.
