Marc Storace, celebre per i suoi trascorsi nei Tea, Eazy Money e soprattutto, Krokus per natale ha fatto due doni ai suoi fan: un nuovo disco, “Crossfire” (Frontiers Music), e la ristrampa del primo solo album “Live and Let Live” (Frontiers Music), che include un live CD inedito.

Ciao Marc, sei pronto per il Natale? Ci sono delle tradizioni maltesi o italiane che rispetti da quando eri bambino?
Sì, lo sono! Il Natale, quando ero bambino a Malta, era sempre un periodo emozionante durante l’anno. Mi piaceva decorare l’albero di casa e mi divertivo a cantare canti natalizi porta a porta con i miei amici.

Siamo qui per parlare di due nuove uscite, il tuo ultimo lavoro in studio e la ristampa del primo solista con un bonus CD live. Non pensi che sia un azzardo pubblicare due album nel mezzo di una crisi dell’industria discografica?
Ho fatto molte scommesse nella mia vita! Uno dei miei motti preferiti è “no risk no gain”!

Andiamo in ordine cronologico, iniziando con “Crossfire”, come è nato questo album?
“Crossfire” è il secondo album in studio degli Storace. L’idea di fare un secondo album era già nella mia testa quando ho incontrato Tommy Henriksen nel backstage del Rock The Ring Festival di Zurigo. Tommy ha davvero dato il via alle danze! Quella sera c’era come headliner Alice Cooper e gli Storace hanno chiuso quel leggendario festival di Zurigo! Io e il mio batterista Patrick Aeby eravamo nel backstage quando Tommy ci ha fatto ascoltare alcuni brani del suo album “Crossbone Skully” ancora inedito. Era davvero entusiasta di lavorare con il leggendario produttore Mutt Lange! Quella stessa sera, dopo la nostra esibizione, Tommy mi ha detto che voleva produrre il mio prossimo album da solista! Ho semplicemente risposto: Hell Yeah!

Che ruolo ha avuto Tommy Henriksen nella scrittura delle canzoni?
Tommy era dell’opinione che avrei dovuto dare ai fan una buona dose di canzoni hard rock da party perché era quello che Marc Storace e i fan dei Krokus, come lui, si aspettavano di sentire dagli Storace! Quindi quando sono andato a trovarlo a casa sua fuori Zurigo mi ha fatto ascoltare un sacco di idee orientate al boogie e al blues con riff rock accattivanti! Il tipo di musica che alberga nel mio DNA sin dai primi giorni dell’hard rock… e mi sono sentito ispirato! Quindi ho scelto una manciata di queste idee di base per continuare a lavorarci a casa. Col passare del tempo ha continuato a inviarmi nuove idee, è un autore ispirato e molto veloce!

Nei tuoi album solisti, tendi a mantenere il controllo sui musicisti coinvolti o lasci loro la massima libertà?
Mi piace lasciare ai musicisti molta libertà, in modo che possano sviluppare le loro idee nel loro tempo e spazio, perché ogni individuo ha il suo approccio alla scrittura delle canzoni. Quando vengono registrate nuove idee, mi piace scegliere quelle che ritengo migliori su cui continuare a lavorare. Poi inizio a creare i miei testi e le melodie vocali per le tracce di base.

Quali sono le canzoni più rappresentative dell’album?
“Screaming Demon” e “Rock This City” rappresentano la maggior parte delle canzoni dell’album.

Hai già deciso quali eseguire dal vivo?
Abbiamo già eseguito “Rock This City” e “We All Need The Money” live ai festival estivi, anche prima dell’uscita di “Crossfire”. Abbiamo recentemente aggiunto “Screaming Demon” alla nostra set-list e ci fa piacere vedere che queste nuove canzoni siano piaciute tanto ai nostri fan! Aggiungeremo altre canzoni dall’album “Crossfire” nel 2025!

Cosa puoi raccontarmi di “Live And Let Live”?
“Live And Let Live” è stato scritto, registrato e pubblicato a fine 2021 durante un concerto sold-out nel leggendario “Mühle Hunziken”, un Music Club vicino a Berna, in Svizzera. In seguito, la band si è esibita in un concerto “live-streaming” all’inizio del 2022 tramite la famosa “Baloise-Session” grazie a Beatrice Stirnimann. Questa esibizione unica ha avuto luogo nel leggendario “Atlantis”, un Music Club a Basilea, in Svizzera. È stato tutto così sensazionale perché tutto questo stava accadendo durante i tempi molto difficili della pandemia di Covid! “Live And Let Live” contiene ritornelli orecchiabili, buoni riff di chitarra rock, testi stimolanti e canzoni arrangiate magnificamente! Ed ecco come è andata la storia… I Krokus avevano smesso di esistere durante la pandemia! Avevamo appena suonato il nostro ultimo concerto europeo nel leggendario Hallenstadion di Zurigo nel dicembre 2019. Presto siamo stati costretti ad annullare il resto del nostro tour mondiale “Adios Amigos”. Questo tour finale avrebbe portato la band nel Regno Unito con i Saxon, in Brasile con i Def Leppard e proseguito attraverso gli Stati Uniti e il Canada dove i Krokus hanno riscosso un grande successo guadagnando molti riconoscimenti d’oro e di platino durante gli anni ottanta. Così durante il lockdown e dopo la fine dei Krokus, ho iniziato a registrare questi duetti “Sunday Funday” per Facebook con la mia dolce figlia Giuliana. Queste registrazioni spontanee di padre e figlia sembravano suscitare le giuste emozioni nei fan e sono state presto seguite da una richiesta per uno spettacolo in streaming autoprodotto per Blick-TV, uno spettacolo in streaming TV “live” nella sala concerti Z7 di Pratteln vicino a Basilea e un altro spettacolo in streaming “live” per Basel TV. Le nostre clip “Sunday-Funday” sembrano aver dato il via a qualcosa di nuovo e abbiamo anche fatto varie interviste insieme! Tuttavia, non volendo esagerare con Giuliana prima che fosse ben preparata per un album di inediti, ho deciso di interrompere il nostro piccolo progetto e ho iniziato a rovistare nei miei archivi alla ricerca di materiale musicale per il mio primo album ufficiale da solista in studio! Ecco, ora avete l’intera storia dietro l’album “Live And Let Live”!

Quali sono le canzoni che non possono mai mancare nelle vostre esibizioni dal vivo?
La title-track “Live And Let Live”; “Carry The Burden” e “High On Love” sono praticamente “qui per restare” nella nostra set-list dal vivo, e penso che anche “Rock This City”; “We All Need The Money” e “Screaming Demon” abbiano già raggiunto lo stesso status!

Sul palco preferisci proporre le canzoni dei tuoi album solisti o quelle dei Krokus?
Beh, prima che uscisse “Crossfire”, avevamo solo 10 canzoni dall’album “Live And Let Live” tra cui scegliere per la scaletta, quindi abbiamo aggiunto un paio di canzoni che i Krokus non suonano mai “dal vivo”, più un paio di canzoni dei miei giorni passati come “Crystal Rivers” dei Tea e “Telephone Man” degli Eazy Money per concludere! Ci siamo divertiti a suonare di nuovo “Midnite Maniac” e “To The Top” dei Krokus, ma ora che abbiamo così tante belle nuove canzoni dall’album “Crossfire” siamo in grado di aggiungerne molte alla nostra scaletta, ovviamente!

Puoi presentare la formazione delle vostre esibizioni dal vivo?
La band è composta da Serge Christen alla chitarra solista; Dom Favez alla chitarra ritmica; Emi Meyer al basso e Patrick Aeby alla batteria.

L’album contiene una sorpresa, un secondo album live: di cosa si tratta?
La ristampa del primo album in studio degli Storace “Live And Let Live” da parte della Frontiers Music srl. contiene un album bonus “Live”! Queste 12 tracce sono veri e propri “momenti salienti“ dei nostri concerti «live » registrati nel leggendario Hallenstadion di Zurigo mentre ci esibivamo come special-guest con i mitici Kiss nel loro Farewell Tour o con i rocker Scorpions!

Marc Storace, famous for his past in Tea, Eazy Money and above all, Krokus, gave his fans two gifts for Christmas: a new album, “Crossfire” (Frontiers Records), and the reissue of his first solo album, “Live and Let Live” (Frontiers Records), which includes an unreleased bonus live CD.

Hi Marc, are you ready for Christmas? Are there any Maltese or Italian traditions that you have respected since you were a child?
Yes I am ! Christmas whilst growing up in Malta was always an exciting time of the year. I liked decorating the tree in our house and enjoyed some door to door carol-singing with my friends.

We are here to chat about two new releases, your latest full length album and the re-issue of “Live and Let Live” including a bonus live album. Don’t you think it’s a gamble to release two albums in the midst of a record industry crisis?
I have taken many gambles in my life! One of my fave mottos is no risk no gain !

Let’s go in chronological order, starting with “Crossfire”, how did this album come about?
“Crossfire” is the second studio-album of Storace. The idea of making a second album was already in my head when I met Tommy Henriksen backstage at the Rock The Ring Festival in Zürich. Tommy really started the ball rolling! He headlined that night with Alice Cooper, and Storace closed that legendary festival in Zürich! Me and my drummer Patrick Aeby were hanging backstage when Tommy played us some exerts from his yet unreleased “Crossbone Skully” album. He was really excited about working with the legendary producer Mutt Lange! That same night after our performance Tommy told me he wanted to produce my next solo-album ! I simply replied Hell Yeah!

What role did Tommy Henriksen have in the songwriting?
Tommy was of the opinion that I should give the fans a good dose of hard rock party songs because that is what Marc Storace and Krokus fans, like himself, expected to hear from Storace! So when I visited him at his home outside Zürich he played me a bunch of boogie and blues oriented ideas with catchy rocking riffs! The kind of music that lives in my DNA since the early days of hard rock…and I felt inspired! So I pick a handful of these basic-ideas to continue working on at home. As time went by he kept sending me new ideas, he`s an inspired and very fast creative worker!

In your solo albums, do you tend to keep control over the musicians involved or do you leave them maximum freedom?
I like to leave musicians a lot of freedom where they can develop their ideas in their own time and space, because every individual has his own approach to songwriting. When new ideas are recorded I enjoy picking the ones I feel are the best to continue workin on. Then I start creating my lyrics and vocal melodies to the basic-tracks.

What are the most representative songs on the album?
“Screaming Demon” and “Rock This City” represent the majority of the songs on the album.

Have you already decided which ones to perform live?
We already performed “Rock This City” and” We All Need The Money” «live» at summer festivals even before the release of “Crossfire”. We recently added Screaming Demon to our Set-List and enjoy seeing these new songs going down so well with our fans! We will be adding more songs from the “Crossfire” album for 2025!

What can you tell me about “Live And Let Live”?
“Live And Let Live” was written, recorded and released end of 2021 with a Sold-Out gig in the legendary “Mühle Hunziken“, a Music Club near Bern, Switzerland. Following that, the band performed a “live-streaming“ gig in early 2022 via the world-famous “Baloise-Session“ thanks to Beatrice Stirnimann. This unique performance took place at the legendary “Atlantis“, a Music Club in Basel, Switzerland. It was all so sensational because this was all happening during the very difficult Covid Pandemic times! “Live And Let Live” contains catchy choruses, good rocking guitar riffs, inspiring lyrics and beautifully arranged songs! And this is how the story goes… Krokus had stopped to exist during the Pandemic! We had just played our last European Concert in the legendary Hallenstadion of Zürich in December 2019. Soon we were forced to cancel the rest of our “Adios Amigos“ World Tour. This final tour would have taken the band to the United Kingdom with Saxon, to Brazil with Def Leppard and continuing through the United States and Canada where Krokus enjoyed a big success earning many gold and platinum awards during the eighties. So during Lockdown and after the end of Krokus, I first started recording these “Sunday Funday“ duets for Facebook with my sweet young daughter Giuliana. This spontaneous Father and Daughter recordings seemed to stir up the right emotions with fans and was soon followed by a request for a self-made streaming show for Blick-TV, a «live» TV Streaming-Show in the Z7 Concert Hall of Pratteln near Basel, and another «live» streaming show for Basel TV. Our “Sunday-Funday“ Clips seem to have started something new, and we did various interviews together too! However, not wanting to do an overkill with Giuliana before she was well prepared with an album of new songs up her sleeve, I decided to stop our little project and started rummaging through my archives in search of song-material for my first official solo studio-album! So there, you now have the whole story behind the “Live And Let Live” studio-album!

What are the songs that can never be missing from your live performances?
The title-song “Live And Let Live” ; “Carry The Burden” and “High On Love” are pretty much `here to stay` on our live Set-List, and I also feel that “Rock This City”; “We All Need The Money” and “Screaming Demon” have already reached the same status!

On stage do you prefer to perform the songs from your solo albums or those of Krokus?
Well, before “Crossfire” was released, we only had the 10 songs from the «Live And Let Live» album to choose from for the Set-List, so we added a couple of songs Krokus never plays «live» plus a couple of songs from my past days like “Crystal Rivers” by Tea and “Telephone Man” by Eazy Money to round it up! We had fun playing “Midnite Maniac” and “To The Top” from Krokus again, but now that we have so many good new songs from the “Crossfire” album we are able to add many of them to our set-list of course!

Can you introduce the line-up of your live performances?
The band consists of Serge Christen on Lead Guitar; Dom Favez on Rythym Guitar ; Emi Meyer on Bass and Patrick Aeby on Drums.

The album contains a surprise, a bonus live album: what is it?
The re-issue of the first Storace studio-album “Live And Let Liv”» by Frontiers Music srl. contains a Bonus “Live” album! These 12 Tracks are real “highlights“ from our « live » concerts recorded in the legendary Hallenstadion of Zürich whilst performing as Special-Guests with the mighty Kiss on their very last Farewell Tour or with the rocking Scorpions!
