La travagliata storia della band inglese, Salem, pare finalmente aver trovato un fase serena. Comparsa in piena esplosione NWOBHM, dopo la realizzazione di alcuni album, il silenzio per 27 anni. Il ritorno datato 2017 è coinciso con la pubblicazione del full length “Attrition”. Un nuovo stop, e poi il ritorno con il nuovo moniker Salem UK, con il quale il gruppo ha pubblicato due album, il secondo dei quali, “The Outer Limits”, è fuori da qualche settimana via Rude Awakening Records.
Ciao, come preferite che chiami la band Salem o Salem UK?
Simon: Salem UK per favore.
Considerate questo album il nuovo album dei Salem o il secondo album dei Salem UK?
Simon: È il nuovo album dei Salem UK.
Adrian: Quando la gente mi chiede quanti album abbiamo fatto dico sempre sei, quindi immagino che io includa quelli fatti come Salem e Salem UK.
Vorreste presentare la formazione attuale?
Simon: Certo, abbiamo Jonny Hirons alla chitarra, Adrian Jenkinson al basso, Dan Ellis alla batteria e io alla voce. Adrian e Jonny fanno anche i cori.
Come e quando sono nate le canzoni di “Outer Limits”?
Simon: Beh, Jonny e Adrian stavano lavorando a una traccia chiamata “Outer Limits” e mi sono ricordato che c’era una giostra con lo stesso nome, quindi ci hanno suggerito di scrivere delle giostre alla fiera di Hull, semplicemente così.
Adrian: Sono nati tutti in modo simile: io o Jonny avevamo un riff che poi sviluppavamo in strofe e ritornello. Da lì inventavamo un nome per la traccia e poi discutevamo sulla storia che il testo avrebbe raccontato. Poi abbiamo studiato la melodia e il testo.
L’album suona in modo classicamente NWOBHM ma anche moderno, pensate che questo piacerà sia alle vecchie che alle nuove generazioni o c’è il rischio che alcuni vecchi metallari non siano contenti?
Simon: Lo speriamo davvero e questo è un grande complimento da parte tua, quindi grazie.
Adrian: È sicuramente un “crossover” dal vecchio al nuovo; ci piace pensare che ci siano canzoni nell’album per tutti.
Jonny: Credo che piacerà a entrambe le generazioni. Questo è quello che traspare dalla maggior parte delle recensioni, quindi direi che è un passo positivo.
“Outer Limits” è un concept album che esplora l’eccitazione creata dalle giostre del luna park, con ogni traccia ispirata a un aspetto diverso della Hull Fair. Cosa succede di così estremo durante la fiera di Hull?
Simon: Di solito è il meteo ad essere estremo!!!! Siamo nel nord dell’Inghilterra e può decisamente fare un po’ freddo durante la settimana della fiera.
Adrian: Alcune delle giostre sono estreme, diciamo così; io non oserei mai andarci!
Qual è per voi il limite estremo che non dovrebbe mai essere superato?
Simon: Non rispondere mai a questa domanda di tua moglie o ragazza: “Il mio sedere sembra grande?”. L’ho fatto una volta e non mi ha fatto bene!!
Johnny: Ahah! Penso che forse il rap o forse il jazz, l’RnB moderno o la vecchia musica acid house siano un po’ fuori dalla scala “Outer Limits”, siamo troppo oltre per questa band!
Adrian: Non bere mai così tanto da dimenticare quanto ti sei divertito la mattina dopo. Aspetta…a pensarci bene…
L’album è stato pubblicato dall’etichetta italiana Rude Awakening Records, come è nata questa collaborazione?
Simon: Ho semplicemente chiesto sui social media se qualcuno conosceva una casa discografica disposta a pubblicare il nostro album e Gabriele ci ha contattati.
Porterete l’album in tour nel Regno Unito e in Europa?
Simon: Speriamo proprio di sì!!!
Adrian: Sì, è questo il piano!
The troubled history of the English band, Salem, seems to have finally found a serene era. Appeared in full NWOBHM explosion, after the release of some albums, the silence for 27 years. The return dated 2017 coincided with the release of the full length “Attrition”. A new stop, and then the return with the new moniker Salem UK, with which the group has released two albums, the second of which, “The Outer Limits”, has been out for a few weeks via Rude Awakening Records.
Hi, how do you prefer me to call the band Salem or Salem UK?
Simon: Salem UK please.
Do you consider this album the new Salem album or the second Salem UK album?
Simon: It’s the new Salem UK album.
Adrian: When people ask how many albums we’ve done I always say six so I guess as far as albums are concerned I include Salem with Salem UK.
Would you like to introduce the current line-up?
Simon: Sure, we have Jonny Hirons on Guitar, Adrian Jenkinson on Bass, Dan Ellis on drums and me on vocals. Adrian and Jonny do the background vocals too.
How and when were the songs on “Outer Limits” born?
Simon: Well Jonny and Adrian were working on a track called “Outer Limits” and I remembered that there was a fairground ride with the same name so it got suggested that we could write about rides at Hull fair, simple as that really.
Adrian: They all came about in a similar way: either Jonny or I would have a riff which we then developed into verses and a chorus. From there we would come up with a name for the track and then we’d have a discussion about the story that the lyrics would tell. Then we came up with themelody and lyrics.
The album sounds classically NWOBHM but also modern, do you think it will appeal to both the old and new generations or is there a risk that some old metalheads will be unhappy?
Simon: We really hope so and that’s a great compliment from you so thank you.
Adrian: It’s definitely a ‘crossover’ from old to new; we like to think there are songs on the album for everyone.
Jonny: I believe it will appeal to both. It is proving to so far judging by the majority of reviews, so I would say it is a positive step.
“Outer Limits” is a concept album that explores the excitement of carnival rides, with each track inspired by a different aspect of Hull Fair. What happens so extreme during the Hull Fair?
Simon: Usually it’s the weather that’s extreme!!!! It’s the north of England and it can definitely get a bit cold during fair week.
Adrian: Some of the rides are extreme—put it this way; I wouldn’t dare go on them!
What is for you the outer limits that should never be exceeded?
Simon: Never answer this question from your wife or girlfriend “ Does my bum look big in this?” I did once and it didn’t do me any good!!
Jonny: Haha! I think maybe rap or maybe jazz, modern-day RnB or old school acid house music are a little off the “Outer-Limits”-gone-too-far scale for this band!
Adrian: Never drink so much that you forget what a good time you had the next morning. Wait…on second thoughts…
The album is released by the Italian label Rude Awakening Records, how did this collaboration come about?
Simon: I just asked on social media if anyone knew of a record company to put our album out and Gabriele got in touch.
Bringing the album on tour in the UK and Europe?
Simon: We certainly hope to!!!
Adrian: Yep, that’s the plan!
