Il sottosuolo francese continua a riservare sorprese, e oggi abbiamo il piacere di ospitare Carcass Excrementiis, mente dietro Serpentiis Odii. Un viaggio tra occultismo, folklore e black metal, per un’intervista dal sapore sulfureo.

Ciao Carcass Excrementiis, Chris dei Gorgon ci ha messi in contatto. Come è nata questa amicizia con lui e che influenza ha avuto su Serpentiis Odii?
Prima di tutto, grazie a te per il supporto e per ciò che fai per la scena underground. Conoscevo il loro batterista Hellesylt dai tempi in cui suonava negli Odium, qualche anno fa. L’ho contattato per registrare la batteria dell’EP “Obscura Natura” e lui mi ha chiesto se fossi disponibile a sostituire il chitarrista dei Gorgon per alcune date live. Ho accettato e così ho conosciuto Chris!

Oltre al tuo ruolo nei Gorgon, in quali altre band hai militato in passato?
La mia vecchia band si chiamava Nohellia, attiva dall’inizio degli anni 2000 fino al 2011, ho suonato anche con alcune band locali, ma nulla di particolarmente interessante.

Perché hai deciso di cambiare il nome della band da Excrementiis Serpentiis Odii a Serpentiis Odii? Ci sono state differenze stilistiche nel passaggio?
Era una decisione che maturavo da tempo. Il progetto con il nome Excrementiis esiste dal 2011, ma nel 2021-2022 ho sentito il bisogno di cambiarlo per qualcosa di più rappresentativo. Dal punto di vista musicale non ci sono grandi differenze, si tratta di un’evoluzione naturale. Il primo album è stato composto tra il 2012 e il 2014, ma per ragioni personali ho impiegato molto tempo a registrarlo. Finalmente, nel 2022 era tutto pronto e nel 2023″ La Glorieuse Morte” è venuto alla luce per diffondere il nostro verbo. L’EP “Obscura Natura” ha un’impronta più tradizionale, ma mantiene quell’autenticità che caratterizza la nostra arte nera. Forse è meno tipicamente “French BM” rispetto al primo album, ma lo spirito è lo stesso.

Quali sono le principali influenze, musicali e non, che plasmano l’identità e il suono di Serpentiis Odii?
Le influenze possono venire da qualsiasi cosa: musica, paesaggi, notizie, libri. La mente di Carcass Excrementiis è piena di cose strane, marce e curiose. Aspettate il prossimo disco e capirete…

Qual è il processo creativo quando componete nuovo materiale?
Non c’è un piano preciso. Ci lasciamo guidare da idee, melodie, riff, immagini, fino a quando tutto prende forma in una canzone.

Quali sono i temi centrali dei testi?
Ora ci ispiriamo più alla magia, al folklore, alla spiritualità e alle leggende. Non c’è solo oscurità a ispirarci: anche la luce, la bellezza nell’orrido e l’orrido nella bellezza.

Come approcciate le vostre esibizioni live in termini di atmosfera ed energia?
Al momento stiamo lavorando per il nostro primo concerto dal vivo. Sarà un’esperienza da vivere… ma non ancora.

Come percepisci la scena black metal francese attuale e dove si collocano al suo interno i Serpentiis Odii?
Difficile dire dove ci collochiamo esattamente, ma la Francia ha molte band di grande livello, con stili e atmosfere uniche. Che sia black metal tradizionale o avanguardista, il nostro paese ha una storia ricca di ispirazione.

Cosa possono aspettarsi i fan da Serpentiis Odii nel prossimo futuro?
Stiamo preparando un nuovo disco e cercando le prime date dal vivo. Non sarà certo l’ultima volta che sentirete parlare di noi. Grazie per l’interesse e… “Fidatevi del Serpente che esce dalla vostra gola…”

The French underground continues to hold surprises, and today we have the pleasure of hosting Carcass Excrementiis, the mind behind Serpentiis Odii. A journey through occultism, folklore, and black metal for an interview with a sulfurous touch.

Hi Carcass Excrementiis, Chris from Gorgon kindly put us in touch with you. How did your connection with him come about, and what kind of influence has this relationship had on Serpentiis Odii ?
First of all, thanks to you, for the support and what you do for the underground scene. I knew Hellesylt from his old band “Odium.” When I contacted him to record Serpentiis Odii’ “Obscura Natura E.P.” on drums, he asked if I could fill in for Gorgon’s guitarist at some live dates. That’s how I met Chris from Gorgon!

Beyond your role as a live member of Gorgon, which other bands have you been involved with in the past?
My old band was Nohellia, active from the early 2000s until 2011, I also played with some local bands, but nothing notable.

What inspired the decision to change the band’s name from Excrementiis Serpentiiis Odii to Serpentiiis Odii, and how would you describe the stylistic differences between your music before and after this transition?
Oh, this is a decision I made a very long time ago. The project (under Excrementiis name) exists since 2011. And maybe since 2021 or 2022 I want to change the band name, the first reason is because I have better and more representative. There are not a lot of differences. This is a natural evolution. First album was composed in 2012-2013-2014. Unfortunately I made so much time to record everything, for personal reasons. But finally, in 2022 everything was finished and in 2023, “La Glorieuse Morte” album came to light to spread the world with our music. That is why “Obscura Natura” E.P is a little different, more traditional BM but we kept the authenticity that made our black art. The avant-garde side. Maybe it sounds less typical french BM as the first album. But it is !!

What are the main influences — both musical and non-musical — that shape the identity and sound of Serpentiis Odii?
Influences can be found in various forms: music, landscape, news, books. The mind of Carcass excr. is filled with strange, rotten, and curious ideas. Stay tuned for the next record to fully grasp it.

Can you walk us through your creative process when composing new material?
There is no plan. We start with ideas, melodies, riffs, and images, and we compose until it resembles a song.

What are the central themes explored in your lyrics?
Now, themes are more inspired by magic and folklore, spirituality and legends, Dark or not. There is not only darkness which inspires us. Light too and the beautiful in the ugly. And the ugly in the beautiful.

How do you approach your live performances in terms of atmosphere and energy?
For the moment Serpentiis Odii works to make its first live concert. And it will be an experience you have to live ! But this is not for now…

How do you perceive the current state of the French black metal scene, and where do you see Serpentiis Odii fitting within it?
I cannot answer about where Serpentiis Odii could fit, but we have a lot of good bands in France. And in different styles with unique atmospheres. Traditional BM or not, avant-garde or not, etc… with a History like ours, hard to make bad and not inspired.

What can fans expect from Serpentiis Odii in the near future?
