Gurkkhas – A Life of suffering

All’inizio degli anni 2000, i Gurkkhas avevano lasciato il segno nel sottobosco death metal europeo con la loro energia grezza e un sound brutale. Poi, il silenzio. Sono passati vent’anni, e in molti avevano dato la band francese per dispersa — fino ad ora. Con “A Life of Suffering“, una raccolta che ripercorre il loro passato esplosivo, i Gurkkhas sono tornati in pista, più affamati che mai. Abbiamo fatto quattro chiacchiere con il frontman Jeff per parlare di questo ritorno inaspettato, dello stato attuale del death metal e di cosa devono aspettarsi i fan da questa macchina da guerra risorta. Spoiler: il meglio deve ancora venire — e farà un gran rumore.

Bentornati dopo 20 anni di silenzio, Jeff. Cosa vi ha motivato a riformare i Gurkkhas?
Hey, prima di tutto grazie mille per questa bella intervista! Tutto è nato quando un’etichetta ci ha chiesto se ci sarebbe piaciuto pubblicare un “Best Of” — e abbiamo detto sì. Poi, parlando tra di noi, abbiamo deciso di riformare la band.

Quali sono state le difficoltà più grandi nel riunire la band dopo così tanto tempo?
Nico, il nostro batterista, è un professionista — insegna e suona al conservatorio, quindi non ha mai smesso. Lo stesso vale per Romain, il nostro chitarrista, che ha suonato in band in Canada e Messico… Io invece avevo proprio smesso di cantare, quindi ho dovuto allenarmi duramente per tornare in forma. E poi c’è stato il fatto che nel 2003 i social non esistevano: abbiamo dovuto imparare ad usarli per rilanciare il gruppo. La nostra motivazione è cresciuta molto quando abbiamo visto la risposta positiva dei media e dei fan all’uscita del “Best Of”.

“A Life of Suffering” contiene brani tratti dai vostri primi due album. Come avete scelto quali canzoni includere?
Abbiamo selezionato i brani che meglio rappresentano ciò che sono i Gurkkhas dal vivo — qualcosa di molto aggressivo, con influenze thrash e black metal. Circa il 70% delle tracce proviene dal secondo album, che ha un suono molto vicino al death metal brutale americano.

Come vedi l’evoluzione del death metal dai primi anni 2000 a oggi? Sentite il bisogno di adattare il vostro stile ai tempi moderni?
Il genere è sicuramente evoluto, ma noi dei Gurkkhas non vogliamo piegarci ai diktat della moda, haha. Suoniamo — e suoneremo sempre — death metal brutale. Certo, qualche tocco moderno ci sta, soprattutto nel suono. Romain ha un’impronta chitarristica molto diversa da quella di Richard, il nostro ex chitarrista, e anche Nico porta la sua personalità alla batteria.

La compilation è stata registrata al LBLAB Studios, di proprietà di Stéphane Buriez. In che modo il suo contributo ha influenzato il suono finale dell’album?
Quando firmammo con due etichette importanti (Massacre Records e Morbid Records), era tutto nuovo e impressionante per noi. Avevamo un budget da studio, e scegliemmo il LB-LAB — lo studio di Stéphane Buriez dei Loudblast. Ci ha insegnato tantissimo. È stato lì che abbiamo conosciuto il lato professionale della scena death metal. È un grande signore. Grazie a lui abbiamo ottenuto il sound che volevamo su entrambi gli album.

Avete in programma di scrivere nuovo materiale, o “A Life of Suffering” è solo un omaggio al passato?
È entrambe le cose. Un saluto al passato, perché non avevamo mai potuto fare un vero tour per promuovere il secondo album — il nostro chitarrista ci aveva lasciati proprio in quel periodo. Quindi, quando è arrivata questa proposta, abbiamo pensato fosse perfetta per salutare la vecchia guardia e annunciare il nostro ritorno. Stiamo lavorando al terzo album. Un brano è già pronto e altri due sono in lavorazione.

Negli ultimi anni la scena death metal francese è cresciuta molto. Qual è la tua opinione sulla situazione attuale?
Sì, è vero, è cresciuta parecchio, anche grazie all’esplosione dei Gojira e alla perseveranza di band come Loudblast, Destinity, Benighted… Non so se continuerà a crescere o se si stabilizzerà — aspettiamo e vediamo.

Avete intenzione di tornare dal vivo? Possiamo aspettarci concerti o apparizioni ai festival?
I Gurkkhas sono prima di tutto una band da palco. Costruiamo sempre gli album come se fossero set live — e quando suoniamo, seguiamo l’ordine delle tracce dell’album. Suoneremo a un grande festival in Francia, il Muscadeath, a settembre 2025, e poi continueremo a comporre. Back in the early 2000s, Gurkkhas left a mark on the European death metal underground with their raw energy and brutal sound. Then, silence. Two decades passed, and many assumed the French assault unit had been buried by time — until now. “With A Life of Suffering“, a compilation that revisits their explosive past, Gurkkhas are back in action and hungrier than ever. We caught up with frontman Jeff to talk about their unexpected return, the state of death metal, and what fans can expect from this reborn war machine. Spoiler: the best is yet to come — and it’s going to be loud.

Welcome back after 20 years of silence, what motivated you to reform Gurkkhas?
Hey man, first of all, thanks a lot for this cool interview! Well, a record company asked us if we’d be interested in releasing a “Best Of” CD, and we said yes. Then, after some discussion among us, we decided to reform the band.

What were the biggest challenges in reuniting the band after such a long time?
Nico, our drummer, is a professional — he teaches and plays at the conservatory, so he never stopped. Same for Romain, our guitarist, who played in bands in Canada and Mexico… I had completely stopped singing, so I had to train hard to get back into shape. Also, when we were active around 2003, social media didn’t exist, so we had to relearn how to use those tools to relaunch the band. Our motivation really increased when we saw the positive response from the media and fans at the launch of the “Best Of”.

“A Life of Suffering” features tracks from your first two albums. How did you choose which songs to include?
We chose tracks that represent what Gurkkhas is like on stage — something very aggressive, with multiple thrash and black metal influences. Around 70% of the songs come from the second album, which really leans toward brutal American death metal.

How do you see the evolution of death metal from the early 2000s to today? Do you feel the need to adapt your style to modern times?
The style has definitely evolved, but Gurkkhas doesn’t want to fall into the trap of following trends blindly, haha. We play — and will always play — brutal death metal. Sure, we might add some modern touches, especially in the sound. Romain really differentiates his guitar tone from that of Richard, our former guitarist, and Nico, our drummer, brings his own personality too.

The compilation was recorded at LBLAB Studios, owned by Stéphane Buriez. How did his input influence the final sound of the album?
When we signed with two major labels (Massacre Records and Morbid Records), everything was new and impressive for us. We had a studio budget, and we chose LB-LAB — the studio of Loudblast’s singer Stéphane Buriez. He taught us so much. That’s where we really got to experience the professional side of death metal. He’s a true gentleman. Thanks to him, we got the sound we wanted for both albums.

Do you have plans to write new material, or is “A Life of Suffering” purely a tribute to the past?
It’s both. A nod to the past, because we never got to tour and truly push that second album — our guitarist left us at the time. So when this opportunity came, we thought it was perfect to say hi to the old fans and mark our return. We’re currently working on our third album. One track is done, and two more are in progress.

The French death metal scene has grown significantly in recent years. What is your perspective on the current state of the scene?
I think it has grown a lot, thanks to the rise of Gojira and the persistence of bands like Loudblast, Destinity, Benighted… I’m not sure if it will keep growing or stabilize — we’ll have to wait and see.

Are you planning to return to live performances? Can we expect concerts or festival appearances in the future?
Gurkkhas is primarily a live band. We always structure our albums as if they were live sets — we even play the songs in album order on stage. We’ll be playing a big festival in France in September 2025, the Muscadeath, and we’ll keep composing.
