Con il nuovo album “The Ascendance”, uscito il 25 aprile per Frontiers Musc, la formazione svedese Art Nation torna con un lavoro che promette di lasciare il segno. Dopo l’ottimo riscontro ottenuto da “Inception”, la band presenta un disco che unisce potenza sonora e raffinatezza melodica, proseguendo un’evoluzione stilistica che l’ha portata sempre più vicina a un’identità musicale ben definita. A rispondere alle nostre domande è stato il bassista Richard Svärd.

Benvenuto Richard, congratulazioni per il nuovo album, “The Ascendance”, in uscita il 25 aprile. Dopo l’acclamato “Inception”, cosa devono aspettarsi i nostri lettori da questo nuovo lavoro in termini di suono e tematiche?
Grazie! Siamo davvero molto soddisfatti del nuovo album. Le prime reazioni sono state ottime e la direzione che abbiamo preso sembra piacere molto. Direi che chi si avvicina per la prima volta alla nostra musica può aspettarsi un mix ben rifinito di metal melodico, con assoli potenti e una voce che spinge al massimo. Ci sono brani più energici come “Lightbringer” e “Set Me Free”, ma anche pezzi più epici come “The Last of Us” e “Runaways”. Se amate il pop o il power metal, troverete sicuramente qualcosa che fa per voi.

Il comunicato stampa parla di una svolta verso un sound heavy più moderno, pur mantenendo le melodie tipiche degli Art Nation. Puoi approfondire questa evoluzione sonora? Quali influenze o approcci avete seguito per raggiungere questo equilibrio?
Dopo esserci ritrovati all’inizio del 2022, volevamo spingerci verso un sound più pesante, come si nota se si ascoltano i nostri lavori più vecchi. Alcune delle influenze principali potrebbero essere band come Sonata Arctica e Beast in Black (io e Chris siamo grandi fan dei BiB, haha). Ma più in generale, ci piace suonare heavy metal e musica che trasmetta energia. Abbiamo provato varie volte a trovare una nostra direzione e, con “Inception” e questo nuovo album, credo che ci siamo riusciti.

Alexander ha definito questo album come il riflesso autentico del vostro percorso e il culmine della vostra crescita. Ci sono stati momenti o scelte particolari che vi hanno portato a questa consapevolezza durante la lavorazione di “The Ascendance”?
Sì, condivido pienamente. Dopo esserci riuniti nel 2022 e aver iniziato a scrivere i brani che poi sono finiti su “Inception”, abbiamo continuato a evolverci. Da lì in poi è stato tutto molto naturale, divertente ed entusiasmante. “The Ascendance” è un album sincero, che rappresenta una band che ama davvero questi pezzi. Non c’è un evento particolare da citare, ma siamo più uniti, appassionati e motivati che mai. E vogliamo portare questa energia ancora più lontano.

Brani come “Halo”, “Thunderball” e “Unstoppable” sono indicati come esempi della nuova direzione sonora. Puoi raccontarci qualcosa in più sulle tematiche affrontate in questi pezzi?
Purtroppo non ho partecipato alla scrittura dei testi, quindi non posso entrare nei dettagli. Posso dire che trattiamo un mix di temi: dalla vita quotidiana alla fantasia. È una miscela variegata, come sempre.

Christoffer è sia chitarrista che produttore, con esperienze maturate accanto a nomi importanti. Quanto ha influito il suo lavoro sul sound di “The Ascendance”? Ci sono state tecniche particolari utilizzate per raggiungere il risultato voluto?
Siamo molto fortunati ad avere Christoffer come produttore, ingegnere e chitarrista. Le sue capacità sono eccezionali, ed è un pilastro fondamentale per rendere reale la nostra visione musicale. Non è tanto una questione di attrezzatura, quanto di creatività. In questo album ci siamo spinti davvero oltre, ma ogni brano ha richiesto un approccio diverso. È stato più un inseguire un’idea che usare una tecnica precisa.

Le tue linee di basso, Richard, sono state descritte come fondamentali per lo “slancio inarrestabile” degli Art Nation. Come hai lavorato alla costruzione delle parti di basso per equilibrare gli aspetti melodici e quelli più heavy dell’album?
Grazie! Di solito lavoro con Chris durante le sessioni di registrazione. Ci sediamo insieme mentre registro e vediamo cosa funziona meglio. Per “The Ascendance”, lui mi ha mandato dei demo con un basso midi di riferimento, e poi io ci metto del mio. A volte tengo le linee semplici, altre volte cerco qualcosa di diverso. L’importante è servire la canzone. In generale, però, il basso rimane piuttosto essenziale.

Avete costruito una solida base nel Nord Europa, e ora vi state espandendo in Europa e Regno Unito. Come vivete questa nuova fase e quali sono le vostre aspettative nel portare “The Ascendance” dal vivo a un pubblico più ampio?
Speriamo di attirare sempre più persone e mostrare a tutti quanto amiamo suonare dal vivo e intrattenere! Vogliamo portare il nostro show in quante più città possibili, in Europa e oltre. Dietro le quinte stiamo lavorando sodo per questo obiettivo e, con una nuova agenzia di booking alle spalle, la cosa sembra sempre più concreta. Speriamo anche che più persone vengano ai nostri concerti: tutto questo per noi conta tantissimo.

Guardando al vostro percorso, da “Revolution” all’inno della Gothia Cup, come si inserisce “The Ascendance” nell’evoluzione discografica degli Art Nation? Cosa rende speciale questo album?
“The Ascendance” è molto diverso dal nostro debutto “Revolution” del 2015. Quello era più vicino al sound di H.E.A.T e al metal anni ’80, mentre ora ci stiamo muovendo verso qualcosa di più pesante. Questo nuovo album rappresenta il passo successivo, una naturale evoluzione per noi.

Il titolo dell’album è “The Ascendance”. Cosa rappresenta per voi in questo momento della carriera, e quale messaggio sperate arrivi agli ascoltatori?
Il titolo rappresenta il fatto che abbiamo finalmente trovato la nostra strada, sia a livello sonoro che come identità. È il nostro quinto disco (il “capitolo V”), e con questo vogliamo dire che siamo qui per fare grande musica e per salire ancora più in alto, musicalmente parlando. Speriamo che, ascoltando l’album, la gente senta di aver vissuto un’esperienza melodica di alto livello, made in Sweden, haha! E ovviamente, che venga a vederci dal vivo per godersela insieme a noi.

With “The Ascendance“, released on April 25th via Frontiers Music, Swedish outfit Art Nation return to the spotlight with an album that aims straight for the hearts of melodic hard rock fans. Following the strong reception of “Inception“, the band continues its stylistic evolution, raising the bar in both sonic impact and melodic finesse. It’s a record that sounds like a statement of identity—solid and self-assured. Bassist Richard Svärd shared more about the new release with us.

Welcome Richard! Congratulations on your upcoming album, “The Ascendance,” set to release on April 25th. Following the acclaimed “Inception,” could you give our readers a brief introduction to what they can expect from this new record in terms of overall sound and themes?
Thank you! We are very happy with the new album. People seem to really like it and the direction of it. I would like to say to our new readers that you can expect a well-polished melodic metal ball coming your way when you listen to the new album and our music. Powerful solos that you would hear a lot in other power metal bands and a great vocalist who is singing full on etc. For example, you have uplifting songs like “Lightbringer and “Set me Free” and perhaps more epic songs like “The Last of Us” and “Runaways”. In overall I think, if you’re a pop fan or a power metal fan you will like our new album.

The press release mentions that “The Ascendance” pushes towards a more modern heavy sound while retaining the Art Nation trademark melodies. Can you elaborate on this sonic evolution? What were some of the key musical influences or approaches you explored to achieve this balance?
Well, after we got together in early 2022, we wanted to move towards a heavier sound as you can hear if you listen to our older stuff. Some key inspirations would perhaps be bands like Sonata Arctica and Beast in Black (me and Chris are huge BiB fans haha), but it’s also that we just enjoy doing heavy metal and uplifting music. We tried several times to find our own sound and style, and I dare say we finally have now with Inception and our latest album. We’re very happy with this musical journey.

Alexander mentioned that this album is a “true reflection of your journey as a band” and the “culmination” of your growth. Could you share some specific experiences or creative decisions during the making of “The Ascendance” that led to this feeling?
I would say that’s true as well. When we were back again in 2022 and when we started to write music that made it into the album “Inception”, we just started to evolve from there. Since then, it’s been a fun, exciting and easy process for us to write songs. “The Ascendance” is a very honest album that includes a band that absolutely love these songs and feel more satisfied with them than ever. I don’t know if we have a specific experience say, but we all feel very excited, passionate and happy with this band at the moment and we are prepared to take it even further.

The album features tracks like “Halo,” “Thunderball,” and “Unstoppable,” which are highlighted as examples of the new sonic direction. Can you delve deeper into the lyrical themes or the stories behind these particular songs?
Unfortunately, I have not been involved in the lyric writing, so I can’t answer that. But the theme is a mix of issues in life, fantasy and other things that we write about.

Christoffer, as the guitarist and producer who has worked with some iconic names, how did his experience shape the sound and production of “The Ascendance”? Were there any specific techniques or gear he utilized to achieve the desired sonic outcome?
We are very lucky and happy to have Christoffer as both our producer, engineer and guitarist in our band. His skills are just astounding, and he is a cornerstone for our musical journey and the ability to make it a reality. For him the gear wasn’t important, but the creativity that you are forced to work with. And for this album we really did push our creativity. But it’s more about chasing a vision rather than using a specific gear or technique. And it is different for each song.

Yor bass lines, Richard, are described as the foundation for Art Nation’s “unstoppable momentum.” How does he approach crafting your bass parts to complement the melodic and heavier aspects of the new album?
Thank you! Usually, it’s me and Chris who have a session together when we record the bass. We sit next to each other during the tracking and see what we can do. For the new album “Ascendance” he sent out a demo with a midi-bass plugin to me as a reference and then I come in and do my take on it. Sometimes I play simple basslines and sometimes I try to do something different. (whatever serves the song right is important in my case to acknowledge). But in general, the bass is very simple.

Art Nation has built a strong presence in the Nordic countries, and now you are expanding your reach into Europe and the UK. How do you feel about this expansion, and what are your expectations for bringing “The Ascendance” to a wider audience through live performances?
We hope that we can manage to attract more fans and show everyone that we absolutely love to play live and entertain! We hope to tour as many places in Europe and the rest of the world as possible in near future and we’re always working hard on achieving that behind the scenes. With our new booking agency behind our back that is looking more and more likely, but time will tell. We also hope more people will come out to support us, as our passion for this whole thing means a lot to us.

Looking back at your previous work, including “Revolution” and the “Gothia Cup” anthem, how do you see “The Ascendance” fitting into the evolution of Art Nation’s discography? What makes this album stand out for you as a band?
I think you can say “The Ascendance” is very different from our debut album “Revolution” that was released back in 2015. “Revolution” being more of a H.E.A.T and the 80s’s metal inspired album and “The Ascendance” acting as a continuation of Art Nation musically going forward to a heavier sound.

Finally, the album title is “The Ascendance.” What does this title signify for Art Nation at this point in your career, and what message do you hope listeners will take away after experiencing the album?
I think the titleis mostly about us finding our own direction in musical style, theme and as Art Nation. It’s our fifth album (as in Chapter V) and the title is more of a way to say that we are here to deliver great music, and were ascending to a greater musical journey, if you will. When our listeners listen to our album, we hope they feel that they have experienced a great melodic record from Sweden, haha. Hopefully more people will come and see us play live and enjoy it together with us.
