Con il ritorno di Colin Parkinson nella formazione, gli Inglorious si ripresentano più forti che mai con il nuovo album “V”, pubblicato da Frontiers Music. Abbiamo parlato con Colin per scoprire il processo creativo dietro il disco e cosa rappresenta questo momento per la band.

Benvenuto Colin, il nuovo album “V” sta già facendo molto parlare nella scena rock. Cosa si prova a tornare con un disco così potente e cosa significa questo momento per te e per la band?
Grazie! Per me è una prosecuzione, ma con una nuova energia e passione per la grande musica rock. Volevamo davvero colpire forte con il nuovo materiale e, grazie all’energia di Rich e Henry, credo ci siamo riusciti. Sono davvero grato che le persone abbiano risposto con tanta apertura e interesse. Abbiamo ricevuto solo feedback molto positivi sia per l’album sia per i nostri ultimi concerti.

Il tuo ritorno nella band arriva dopo una meritata pausa e anni di intenso tour. In che modo questa pausa e il successivo ritorno hanno influenzato il tuo modo di scrivere e il tuo approccio mentale a “V”? Questo tempo lontano ti ha dato una nuova prospettiva sugli Inglorious o sulla tua musica?
Nathan ed io abbiamo sempre scritto molto bene insieme. Negli anni in cui non ero in una band ho scritto molte bozze e canzoni, circa una ventina le ho inviate a Nathan e lui ha scelto quelle che lo hanno colpito di più. Nel frattempo mi sono avvicinato a stili diversi, dal metal più pesante al pop, e credo che queste influenze si siano riflettute nel nuovo album. Inoltre Nathan era aperto a sperimentare vocalmente, il che ha ampliato le possibilità.

Richard Shaw viene da un background nel metal estremo e Henry Rogers è un batterista progressive molto apprezzato. Come hanno influenzato i loro stili il sound di “V”?
Rich è un musicista molto versatile che suona anche altri strumenti. Ha capito subito cosa volevamo e ho scoperto che condividiamo molte delle stesse influenze, cosa che ha facilitato molto il lavoro. Ha dovuto registrare da casa a causa della distanza, quindi gli ho inviato le parti tramite video e lui le ha suonate esattamente come gli avevo indicato. Ho solo dovuto dirgli cosa immaginavo e lui ha dato delle performance straordinarie! Per Henry è stato uguale, ha imparato velocemente ed è stato disponibile a qualsiasi idea gli proponessi. Abbiamo fatto qualche giorno di prove di basso e batteria per sincronizzarci e poi non gli è servito molto tempo per registrare la batteria. Anche lui è un musicista eccezionale e ci sincronizziamo molto bene.

Il nuovo singolo “Say What You Wanna Say” è un brano energico con un vibe punk che ricorda i Mötley Crüe. Puoi raccontarci com’è nato e cosa ha ispirato il suo sound?
Sì, avevo questa idea da tempo. Inizialmente l’avevo proposta a un’altra band con cui lavoravo, ma loro hanno scelto una direzione diversa. Io amo i Crüe e volevo un’atmosfera simile a “Kickstart My Heart” ma con uno stile più urlato nelle strofe. È piaciuta molto anche dal vivo!

La traccia “Stand” è stata scritta durante la pandemia e parla del desiderio di riconnettersi con la natura e fuggire dalla vita in città. Come si riflettono questi temi nel resto dell’album?
L’album tocca diversi temi: l’autodeterminazione, l’ammettere i propri errori, l’amore perduto e altro. “Stand” è stata l’ultima canzone che ho presentato a Nathan, volevamo un brano un po’ diverso per chiudere l’album. Gli avevo suonato un altro pezzo come possibile ultima traccia, poi ho deciso di fargli ascoltare “Stand” come opzione alternativa. Gli è piaciuta subito. L’avevo scritta per il 90%, lui ha cambiato qualche testo e ne ha aggiunti dove serviva. Sono felice che sia entrata nel disco. Amiamo i groove e questa canzone soddisfa proprio quel lato.

L’album “V” è stato prodotto da te e mixato da Tony Draper, che ha lavorato anche sui vostri album precedenti. Quanto è stato importante mantenere continuità nella produzione pur esplorando nuove strade musicali?
Per la produzione stavamo pensando a un produttore molto conosciuto, ma era impegnato nel periodo in cui potevamo lavorare. Così Nathan mi ha suggerito di produrlo io, visto che avevo scritto la maggior parte delle canzoni e le conoscevo più a fondo. Sono davvero contento di questa scelta, credo sia venuto meglio così. Tony Draper è un ingegnere fantastico e una persona eccezionale. Abbiamo già lavorato insieme su “II” e “Ride To Nowhere2, quindi sapeva esattamente cosa cercavamo. La nostra filosofia è sempre stata quella di puntare su canzoni solide senza nascondere eventuali difetti con una produzione troppo artificiale. Volevo mantenere questo approccio e aggiungere effetti o idee moderne solo quando serviva. Tony ha anche suonato qualche tastiera in questo disco, come negli altri due.

Brani come “Devil Inside” e “Power Of Truth” mostrano un mix di introspezione ed energia. Come bilanciate queste atmosfere contrastanti nell’album?
Bilanciamo mettendo pezzi opposti in altre tracce e anche con brani che si collocano a metà strada tra i due.

Dopo l’uscita di “V”, cosa possono aspettarsi i fan dai vostri prossimi live? Ci sono piani o momenti speciali del tour o dei festival che vuoi anticipare?
Abbiamo appena finito la prima serie di date qui nel Regno Unito. I fan sono stati fantastici e siamo davvero entusiasti della risposta e della partecipazione! Suoneremo allo Steelhouse Festival a luglio, non vedo l’ora, e stiamo organizzando altre date in questo momento. Non vedo l’ora di tornare a suonare in Europa.

With Colin Parkinson returning to the lineup, Inglorious come back stronger than ever with their new album “V”, released via Frontiers Music. We talked to Colin to learn about the creative process behind the record and what this moment means for the band.

Welcome Colin, your new album “V” is already making waves in the rock scene. How does it feel to come back with such a powerful release and what does this moment represent for you and the band?
Thank you! It’s a continuation with a renewed energy and passion for great rock music. We really wanted to hit hard with the new material and with the new energy from Rich and Henry I believe we’ve achieved that. I’m so grateful that people have been so open and receptive to it. We’ve had nothing but great feedback from both the album and our recent shows.

Your return to the lineup comes after a well-earned break and years of intense touring. How did stepping away and then coming back affect your songwriting and overall mindset for “V”? Did this time apart offer you a new perspective on Inglorious or your music?
Nathan and I have always written well together. I had many ideas and songs written in the years that I wasn’t in the band, so I sent about 20 to Nathan and he picked which ones resonated with him. From my point of view, I got into different styles of music from heavy bands through to pop so that influence I guess worked its way into the new album. Also, Nathan was open to taking different approaches vocally which opened up more experimentation.

With Richard Shaw coming from a background in extreme metal and Henry Rogers being a celebrated progressive drummer, how did their unique styles shape the sound of “V”?
Rich is actually a well-rounded musician who plays a few different instruments. He got it straight away and I found out that we share a lot of the same influences which is obviously very helpful. It was a breeze. Due to distance, Rich had to record at home so I sent the parts via videos and he laid them down verbatim. Solowise, I just told Rich what I was hearing and he delivered some phenomenal playing!
Henry was the same, a very fast learner and open to whatever I threw at him. We did a few days of rehearsing Bass and Drums to get locked in and then it didn’t take him long at all to put his drums down. He’s also a phenomenal player and somebody that I can lock in with easily as a bass player.

The new single “Say What You Wanna Say” has been described as a high-energy track with a punk meets Mötley Crüe feel. Can you tell us more about the creative process behind this song and what inspired its sound?
Yeah, I had this song idea for a while. I actually pitched to a band that I was working with but they went in a different direction. I love The Crue and was going for a ‘Kickstart My Heart’ type vibe but with a more shouty style in the verse. It’s gone down well live!

The track “Stand” was written during the pandemic and reflects a desire to reconnect with nature and escape city life. How do themes like this resonate throughout the rest of the album?
There are quite a few themes on this album — many themes of self-empowerment, admitting fault, lost love etc. “Stand” was the last song that I played to Nathan as we wanted one more song that was a bit different to round the album out. I played him another one which was going to be it and then thought I’d play “Stand” to him as an outside option. He loved it. I had written 90 percent of it and he changed a few lyrics and added some where needed. I’m glad that it made it on. We love grooving so it fulfils that and more.

“V” was produced by you, Colin, and mixed by Tony Draper, who worked on your earlier albums. How important was it to maintain continuity in production while exploring new musical heights?
Production wise — we were speaking with a prominent producer about doing it but he was busy in the only period that we had available. So, Nathan suggested I produce it as I had written most of it and had sat with the tracks for the longest. I’m really appreciative of that and I feel it’s turned out better for it. Tony Draper is an amazing engineer and all-round person. We worked on ‘II’ and ‘Ride To Nowhere’ together so he knew exactly what we were after. We’ve always been about getting strong songs across without covering weaknesses with over the top production. I wanted to stay true to that ethos and only bring in effects/modern production ideas now and again. Tony also played some keys on this album like the other two that he worked on.

Looking at the tracklist, songs like “Devil Inside” and “Power Of Truth” suggest a mix of introspection and energy. How do you balance these contrasting moods on the album?
By having the opposite in other songs and by also filling in between the two.

After releasing “V”, what can fans expect from your upcoming live shows? Are there any special plans or highlights you’re excited to share about your tour or festival appearances?
We’ve just completed our first run of dates here in UK. The fans have been amazing and we’re overwhelmed by the response and attendance that we’ve had! We’re playing Steelhouse Festival in July which I can’t wait for and more dates are being planned at the moment. I really look forward to heading out into Europe again at some point!
