Con il nuovo album “Cloven Tongues of Fire”, pubblicato il 28 novembre 2025 da Osmose Productions, i portoghesi The Ominous Circle tornano con il loro lavoro più oscuro e intenso. Tra death metal venato di black, sezioni doom e atmosfere rituali, il disco è un vero grimorio di necromanzia sonora, esaltato dalla produzione organica e dal mastering di Dan Lowndes. Ne abbiamo parlato con António A. C. Carvalho, voce della band.
Benvenuto, Antonio! Dato che sono passati parecchi anni dal vostro debutto, potresti presentare The Ominous Circle ai nostri lettori? Come descriveresti il vostro sound in tre parole?
Death Metal Necromancy.
Abbiamo già detto dei i molti anni trascorsi tra i due album, dato che sono passati otto anni dal vostro precedente lavoro, “Appalling Ascension” (2017). Cosa ha causato un’attesa così lunga tra le due uscite e in che modo quel periodo ha influenzato “Cloven Tongues of Fire”?
Il nostro rapporto con l’arte è di natura spirituale. Non siamo mossi da scadenze commerciali né da calendari promozionali, il che significa che scriviamo la musica che vogliamo, quando vogliamo e come vogliamo. C’è qualcosa di metafisico nello scrivere musica: quando arriva l’ispirazione è come essere comandati da una forza superiore, ed è proprio quando senti quell’energia scorrere che le cose iniziano a prendere vita. La differenza principale tra i due album sta nel modo in cui questo processo ha colpito. Il primo album è fluito direttamente dalle mani, mentre il nuovo è nato nelle nostre menti e poi ha dovuto essere trasposto sulla chitarra, ed è questo il motivo principale del lungo tempo necessario. Tuttavia, questo album è completamente scritto dal 2022. Ciò che è venuto dopo è stata la registrazione, un processo sempre molto impegnativo, dato che viviamo lontani gli uni dagli altri e registriamo in studi diversi.
“Cloven Tongues of Fire” è stato descritto come il vostro album più oscuro e intenso, capace di fondere nuovi elementi con aspetti più tradizionali per creare composizioni labirintiche. In che modo il processo di scrittura e arrangiamento è cambiato rispetto ai lavori precedenti? E come affrontate ritmo, struttura e contrasti emotivi in un album così cupo e complesso?
Come ho detto in precedenza, la principale differenza è che questo album ha iniziato a prendere forma nelle nostre menti, invece di fluire direttamente dalle mani. Il primo album era tradizionale, istintivo e primitivo. Questa volta abbiamo voluto portare la formula a un livello diverso e creare qualcosa di più imprevedibile, oppressivo, denso e suffocante, iniettando nuove influenze e visioni. L’obiettivo principale è non ripetere mai ciò che abbiamo fatto prima: ogni opera deve avere un approccio distintivo. Non siamo qui per compiacere qualcuno, ma per fare ciò che vogliamo. Il modo in cui ogni canzone si sviluppa è molto naturale e non realmente programmato. Seguiamo l’energia e l’emozione che si celano dietro ogni riff e fondamentalmente obbediamo a quella spinta per andare avanti.
La vostra musica ha sempre portato con sé un forte senso di atmosfera e ritualità, e i vostri costumi di scena sono impressionanti, quasi simili a vesti cerimoniali o religiose. Quanto sono importanti questi elementi cerimoniali e visivi nel processo creativo di The Ominous Circle, sia in studio che dal vivo? E in che modo contribuiscono all’atmosfera complessiva?
Sono un elemento essenziale della musica, danno contesto alla cerimonia che è un’esibizione dal vivo e impostano il tono per la magia che fluisce in studio.
I vostri membri restano anonimi sul palco. È una scelta puramente scenografica o vi garantisce una maggiore libertà artistica?
L’anonimato mira a preservare la libertà artistica, permettendo all’ascoltatore di concentrarsi sulla musica.
Qual è il vero significato dietro il titolo “Cloven Tongues of Fire”?
L’album prende l’episodio biblico della Pentecoste per presentare una narrativa esplorativa sull’individualità, l’autoaffermazione, la conoscenza di sé, l’isolamento dal mondano e tutta la sofferenza che deriva dall’evangelizzazione e dalle catene della religione.
Qual è il significato della copertina dell’album e come si collega al titolo e all’atmosfera generale del disco?
La copertina nasce direttamente da una visione dell’artista Anna Frigatti/Ars Alchymiae. È la sua interpretazione del concept e dei testi dell’album e, per essere sinceri, non potrebbe essere più accurata. Ha fatto un lavoro pazzesco!
Ora che “Cloven Tongues of Fire” è uscito, avete in programma edizioni speciali, varianti in vinile o altri oggetti da collezione a cui i fan dovrebbero prestare attenzione?
L’album viene pubblicato in vari formati: LP arancione, LP nero, CD, digipack e cassetta. Un sacco di formati da collezione per tutti i devoti della musica estrema.
Avete in programma nuovi concerti? Cosa possono aspettarsi i fan dalle vostre esibizioni?

With their new album “Cloven Tongues of Fire”, released on 28 November 2025 via Osmose Productions, Portugal’s The Ominous Circle return with their darkest and most intense work yet. Combining black-tinged death metal, doom-laden passages, and ritualistic atmospheres, the album stands as a true grimoire of sonic necromancy, enhanced by organic production and the mastering of Dan Lowndes. We spoke with António A. C. Carvalho, the band’s vocalist.
Welcome, Antonio! Since quite a few years have passed since your debut, could you introduce The Ominous Circle to our readers? How would you describe your sound in three words?
Death Metal Necromancy.
We’ve already mentioned the many years that have passed between the two albums, so It’s been eight years since your previous album “Appalling Ascension” (2017). What took so long between releases, and how did that time influence “Cloven Tongues of Fire”?
Our relationship with art is a spiritual one. We are not moved by commercial deadlines nor promotional calendars, which means we write music that we want, when we want and how we want. There is something metaphysical about writing music, when inspiration strikes it’s like being commanded by a higher power, and it’s exactly when you feel that energy flowing that things start coming to life. The main difference between both albums lies in how it stroke. The first album flowed directly from the hands, while the new one came to being in our minds and then had to be transposed to the guitar and that is the main reason why it took so long. However, this album is fully written since 2022. What came next was recording, which is always a very cumbersome process as we live far away from each other and record in different studios.
“Cloven Tongues of Fire” has been described as your darkest and most intense album yet, merging new elements with old facets to create labyrinthine compositions. How did the writing and arrangement process differ from your previous work, and how do you approach pacing, structure, and emotional contrast throughout an album of such darkness and complexity?
As I previously said the main difference is that this album started to take its form in our minds, rather than flowing directly from our hands. The first album was traditional, instinctive and primitive. This time we wanted to take the formula to a different level and do something more unpredictable, oppressive, dense and suffocating and inject new influences and visions. The main objective is never to repeat what we did before, every opus shall have its distinctive approach. We’re not here to please anyone, but to do what we want. The way each song develops is very natural and not really programmed. We follow the energy and the emotion that lies beneath each riff and basically obey such drive in order to move forward.
Your music has always carried a strong sense of atmosphere and ritual, and your stage costumes are striking, almost like ritualistic or religious garb. How important are these ceremonial and visual elements in The Ominous Circle’s creative process, both in the studio and during live performances, and how do they contribute to the overall atmosphere?
They are an essential element of the music, provide context to the ceremony that is a live presentation and set the tone for the magic that flows in the studio.
Your members remain anonymous on stage. Is this purely a scenographic choice, or does it give you greater artistic freedom?
Anonymity aims to preserve artistic freedom, while making the listener focus on the music.
What is the real meaning behind the title “Cloven Tongues of Fire”?
The album takes the biblical episode of the Pentecost to present an exploratory narrative of individuality, self-affirmation, self-knowledge, isolation from the mundane and all the suffering that comes from evangelization and the shackles of religion.
What is the significance of the album cover, and how does it connect to the title and the overall mood of the record?
The album cover spawns directly from a vision of the artist Anna Frigatti/Ars Alchymiae had. It is her take on the album concept and lyrics and, to be honest, it couldn’t be more accurate. She did a tremendous job!
With “Cloven Tongues of Fire” now out, are there any plans for special editions, vinyl variants, or other collectibles that fans should watch for?
The album is being released in various formats: Orange LP, Black LP, CD, digipack and tape. Plenty of collectible formats for all extreme music devotees.
Do you have plans for upcoming live shows, and what can fans expect from your performances?
We are booking shows as we speak. Some of those will be announced very soon.
