Ciao Rob, e benvenuto! Siamo a solo una settimana dall’uscita di “Sovereign”, il tuo attesissimo sesto album solista via Frontiers Music Srl. È un titolo che implica essere sovrani o indipendenti. Qual è il significato personale del titolo “Sovereign” per te in questa fase della tua carriera?
Ciao Giuseppe! Grazie per avermi invitato. Sì, “Sovereign” è qualcosa di completamente diverso che tutti i fan, vecchi e nuovi, apprezzeranno. Per me ora, dopo tutti questi anni, ogni testo, melodia e musica, persino la produzione, è davvero al massimo e al meglio su tutti i fronti. Sono molto grato di poter offrire queste performance e queste canzoni.

Hai dichiarato che “Sovereign” è il tuo “miglior album con la migliore produzione” fino ad oggi. Quale elemento o scelta creativa eleva questo album rispetto ai tuoi lavori precedenti?
Amo tutto il mio lavoro e ne sono orgoglioso. Ho scoperto che il tempo e l’esperienza mi hanno fatto crescere, mantenendo il classico feeling rock con una produzione più moderna. Ho trovato un equilibrio in mezzo a tutto questo che mi ha reso molto felice.

“Sovereign” è descritto come un seguito di “Epical”. Ci sono temi specifici, lirici o musicali, che collegano i due album in una narrativa continua?
Assolutamente! Con ogni album c’è un flusso continuo, restando fedele al genere e al feeling negli anni. “Epical”, essendo l’ultimo prima di “Sovereign”, è ancora più collegato grazie alla stessa famiglia di autori e performer coinvolti.

Oltre a cantare e scrivere, spesso produci e mixi i tuoi album, collaborando con musicisti di alto livello. Come gestisci l’equilibrio tra la tua visione artistica e le decisioni tecniche della produzione?
A dire il vero, non ho mai avuto problemi con le decisioni tecniche e la produzione nei miei album solisti. Se avevo dubbi su qualcosa, lo confrontavo con i co-autori e loro davano un’opinione positiva, e comunque alla fine dicevano sempre che la decisione finale era mia. Fortunatamente, ci rispettiamo tutti come musicisti e ognuno di loro è un mostro del settore e allo stesso tempo una persona per bene, il che rende un vero piacere lavorare insieme.

È difficile mantenere l’oggettività quando lavori su materiale così personale?
È nella mia natura ripensare le cose, e a volte riscrivo una canzone finché non mi sembra giusta. Se ho ancora dubbi, la metto da parte e ci ritorno più tardi con una prospettiva diversa.

L’album presenta un’altra formazione stellare di musicisti. Quando componi i tuoi “dream team” per i progetti solisti, scrivi le canzoni pensando ai loro stili specifici, o sono le loro parti a modellare le canzoni successivamente?
Negli anni, è sempre stato prima il brano, ma mentirei se non pensassi a ciò che loro aggiungeranno per portarlo al livello successivo. Lol! Tony Franklin è presente in tutti i miei album, ed è incredibile sentire la differenza a livello ritmico. Poi Joel Hoekstra ha portato una nuova dimensione armonica che cattura completamente e si integra senza intralciare i brani. Per questo sono musicisti di classe mondiale. Sono molto grato e viziato allo stesso tempo.

La tracklist include quello che pare un un tributo a Phil Collins, “In the Air Tonight”. Cosa ha ispirato questa scelta?
L’unica cosa che ho in comune con quel classico è il titolo. Per quanto ami Phil Collins e lui sia nel mio cuore, non c’è altro oltre il titolo. È il mio tributo a lui, ma la canzone è completamente originale e molto diversa. La adoro.

Hai spesso citato i giganti del melodic rock tra le tue principali influenze. Eppure la tua voce ha un timbro e un’estensione unici. C’è stato un momento preciso in cui hai smesso di “imitare” i tuoi eroi e hai trovato la tua voce distintiva?
Sono sempre stato influenzato da tutti loro. Negli anni, è stato quando abbiamo formato i Final Frontier che ho iniziato a sfidarmi vocalmente, come se fossi in palestra. Diventavo più forte, e quando sono arrivato nei Saga, mi sentivo pronto e più me stesso. La mia carriera solista è stata una benedizione: fare ciò che so fare meglio, offrire capacità vocali, produzione e mantenere vivo il genere. Sono grato ogni giorno.

In che modo la tua dedizione al benessere fisico, con il kickboxing e una dieta disciplinata, influenza la tua resistenza sul palco e la disciplina nel processo creativo in studio?
Per me, al 100%! Più mi sento bene, migliori sono le performance e più chiaro è il mio pensiero nella scrittura, soprattutto ora negli anni più maturi. Fortunatamente ho continuato a mantenermi in forma. Il mio consiglio migliore ai giovani musicisti, per la longevità, è restare puliti e idratati.

Hai sempre espresso grande gratitudine e affetto speciale per il tuo pubblico in Italia. C’è un ricordo o un’aneddoto legato al pubblico italiano che ti è particolarmente caro e che vorresti condividere?
Assolutamente! Ho alcuni parenti in Italia e crescendo qui in Canada l’italiano è la mia seconda lingua. Ricordo di aver incontrato alcuni fan italiani quando suonavo in Austria e abbiamo chiacchierato in italiano. Mi sono divertito un mondo. Penso sia stato il momento più bello del mio tour! Indimenticabile. Spero di tornare presto in Europa.

Hi Rob, and welcome! We are just a week away from the release of “Sovereign,” your highly anticipated sixth solo album via Frontiers Music Srl. It’s a title that implies being supreme or independent. What is the personal significance behind the title “Sovereign” for you at this stage of your career?
Hi Giuseppe! Thank you for having me. Yes, “Sovereign” is something else altogether that all fans and new fans will appreciate. For me now and after all these years, from every song lyric, melody and music, even the production, it is truly at its highest and best across the board for me. I’m very grateful to be delivering these performances and songs.

You’ve stated that “Sovereign” is your “very best album and production” to date. What specific element or creative choice elevates this album above your previous work?
I love all my work and I’m proud of all of it. I found that my time and experience have made me grow by keeping the classic rock feel with a more modern production. I found a place somewhere in the midst of it all, a balance that has made me very happy.

“Sovereign” is described as picking up where “Epical” is left off. Are there specific themes, lyrical or musical, that connect the two albums into a continuous narrative?
Absolutely! With every album, there is a continuous flow, keeping it true to the genre and feel throughout the years. “Epical” being my very last one before “Sovereign” is even more connected because of the same family of songwriters and performances involved.

Besides singing and writing, you often produce and mix your own albums, collaborating with high-caliber musicians. How do you manage the balance between your artistic vision and the technical decisions of production?
To be honest, I never really had any issues throughout all my solo records when it came to technical decisions and production. If I was unsure about something, then I would run it by the co-writers involved and they would have a positive opinion, and even then, they would always say that in the end it’s my decision to make, either way. Thankfully, we all respect each other as musicians and every one of them is a monster of the game and gentlemen at the same time, which makes it a joy for me to work with.

Is it difficult to maintain objectivity when working on such personal material?
It’s in my nature to rethink things and sometimes I’ll rewrite a song until it feels right for me. If I’m still unsure, then I’ll store it away and go back later with a different perspective.

The album features another stellar lineup of musicians. When you are assembling these “dream teams” for your solo projects, do you write the songs with their specific playing styles in mind, or do their parts shape the songs after the fact?
Over the years, it’s always been about the song first, but I’d be lying if I don’t think about what they’re going to add to bring it to the next level. Lol! Tony Franklin has been on all my records, and it’s amazing how you can feel the difference rhythmically. Then Joel Hoekstra has brought a whole new harmonic dimension that completely captivates and gels without intruding on the songs. This is why they’re world-class musicians. I’m very grateful and spoiled at the same time.

The tracklist includes what seems to be a tribute to Phil Collins, “In the Air Tonight.” What inspired this choice?
The only thing I have in common with the classic song is the actual title. As much as I love Phil Collins and he’s in my heart, there is nothing more than the title. That’s my tribute to him, but the song is completely original and very different. I love it.

You’ve often cited melodic rock giants among your main influences. Yet your voice has a unique timbre and extension. Was there a precise moment in your development where you stopped “imitating” your heroes and found your own distinctive voice?
I’ve always been influenced by them all. Over the years, it was when we formed Final Frontier that I started to challenge myself vocally and found that it was like being at the gym. I was getting stronger, and by the time I was in Saga, I felt that I was beyond ready and more myself. My solo career has been a blessing, doing what I do best: delivering the vocal abilities, production, and keeping the genre alive. I’m grateful every day.

How does your dedication to physical well-being, such as practicing kickboxing and a disciplined diet, influence your stamina on stage and your discipline in the creative process in the studio?
For me, 100 percent! The better I feel, the better the performance and the better I think when writing, even more so now in my later years. Thankfully, I kept up with it all. My best advice to all young musicians for longevity is to stay clean and hydrated.

You have always expressed great gratitude and a special affection for your fan base in Italy. Is there a specific memory related to the Italian audience, or maybe an anecdote, that you hold dear and would like to share?
Absolutely! I have more family in Italy and growing up here in Canada, Italian is my second language. I do remember running into a few Italian fans when I performed in Austria and we chatted in Italian. I had a blast. I think it was the highlight of my tour! It was unforgettable. I hope to be back in Europe soon!
