Rompere le barriere dei generi non è mai facile, ma François-Thibaut Hordé con i suoi Déluge ci sta provando. Il nuovo “Ægo Templo” (Metal Blade) è un altro passo in questa direzione.

Benvenuto François, quando hai intitolato il tuo album di debutto “Æther”, avevi già deciso che anche il secondo sarebbe stato chiamato con una parola che iniziasse per Æ?
Ciao, bella domanda. Non era affatto pianificato. Ad essere onesti, non avevo intenzione di fare un secondo album quando ho registrato il primo. Ma il significato di quel “Æ” è venuto da solo e credo che rimarrà per molto tempo.

Com’è stato il tuo processo di scrittura per “Ægo Templo”? Hai creato prima le basi ritmiche e ti sei basato su di esse o hai scritto le melodie e ci hai costruito le canzoni attorno?
Inizio sempre con una melodia sulla mia chitarra, poi arrangio gli altri strumenti e l’energia primitiva della creatività fa il resto.

Hai detto: “Volevo approfondire qualcosa andasse verso ‘l’easy listening’, ma non volevo neanche perdere quello che avevamo, quella malinconia che è l’essenza della nostra musica”. Perché vuoi dedicarti a qualcosa di più “facile scolto”? Sei stanco della musica estrema?
In un certo senso sì. Comunque ascolto musica estrema ma deve essere innovativa, ben fatta ed… estrema. Ascolto molto di più altri generi e mi piacerebbe rompere i confini del metal come fanno altre band.

La tua collaborazione con Tetsuya Fukagawa delle leggende giapponesi screamo Envy e con Hélène Muesser è un passo verso questa musica di facile ascolto?
Mi aspettavo che Tetsuya si dedicasse quasi solo canto, che è poesia, anche se trovo il risultato finale assolutamente magnifico. Hélène porta una forza incredibile con la sua bellissima voce femminile, ma non credo che né lei né Tetsuya rendano l’ascolto della nostra musica più facile. Penso che la struttura in sé della canzone lo sia.

Tetsuya Fukagawa e Hélène Muesser in questo nuovo album, Neige degli Alcest ha fatto un’apparizione come ospite nel vostro primo full lenght: se potessi scegliere, fuori o nella scena black metal, con chi collaborare, chi sarebbe?
Ho migliaia di idee sulle collaborazioni ma mi piacerebbe fondere generi diversi che non dovrebbero normalmente coesistere, senza che però il risultato finale diventi grottesco.

La mia traccia preferita dell’album è “Opprobre”, che mi dici questa meravigliosa canzone?
Grazie. Fatto divertente, questa è la prima canzone che ho scritto per questo album ed ha già di tre anni. Questa canzone parla del tradimento. “Opprobre” in francese è la punizione definitiva che riceve un traditore dai membri della sua comunità quando questa viene tradita.

Dopo il tuo accordo con la Metal Blade, hai notato un crescente interesse intorno alla band?
Assolutamente, le risorse di comunicazione e strategia della Metal Blade sono enormi. Volevo che i Déluge fossero più presenti sulla scena internazionale con il nuovo album e sta già funzionando.

Sulla tua pagina Facebook, sotto la voce genere, c’è scritto “Untrve French Black Metal”: perché vuoi prendere le distanze dalla scena black metal del tuo Paese?
Si tratta più di onestà. Ho scoperto il BM molto tardi, non volevo giocarmi la carta “trve” perché non è quello che facciamo.

Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi a lungo termine con la band?
Voglio fare con il black-metal quello che i Gojira hanno fatto con il death.

La tua playlist per il lockdown?
Principalmente il cantante francese Alain Bashung, poi Drab Majesty, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Solstafir, Madrugada, Pg.lost.

Breaking the barriers of genres is not easy, but François-Thibaut Hordé with his Déluge is trying to do this. The new “Ægo Templo” (Metal Blade) is another step in this direction.

Welcome, when you entitled your debut album “Æther”, had you already decided that the second one would be named with a word beginning for Æ?
Hello, nice question. It was not planned at all. To be honest, I was not planning to do a second album when I recorded the first one. But the meaning of that “Æ” came by itself and it will stick to us for a long time I guess.

What was your writing process like for “Ægo Templo”? Did you create scratch beats and build upon them, or did you write the melodies and build songs around them?
I always start with a melody on my guitar, then I orchestrate the other instruments and the primitive energy of creation does the rest.

You said: “I wanted to go further into something more ‘easy to listen to’ but I really did not want to lose what we had, that melancholia and the essence of our music.” Why want you go into something more ‘easy to listen to’? Are you tired of extreme music?
In a certain way, yes. Still I do listen to some extreme music but it has to be innovative, well done, and… extreme. I listen to a lot more to other genres and I would love to break the boundaries of the metal genre as other bands do.

Your collaboration with Tetsuya Fukagawa of Japanese Screamo legends Envy and with Hélène Muesser is a step to this easy listening music?
I was not expecting Tetsuya to do almost only singing is poem even if I find the result absolutely magnificent. Hélène brings a lot of power with her beautiful female voice but I do not think her nor Tetsuya make the listening of our music more easy to listen to. I really think the writing of the song does.

Tetsuya Fukagawa and Hélène Muesser on this new album, Neige from Alcest makes an appearance as guest on your first full-length: if you could pick, out or in black metal scene, to collaborate with, who would it be?
I have thousands of ideas of collaborations but I would love to melt genres that are not supposed to, but still I do not want it to be grotesque.

My favouriti track on the album is “Opprobre”, what’s about this marvellous song?
Thanks. Funny fact, this is the first song I wrote for this album and it is already 3-year-old. This song is about treason. “Opprobre” in French is the ultimate punition you get from the members of a community by betraying a member of that community.

After your deal with Metal Blade, did you notice an increasing of interest around the band? 
Absolutely, the communication & strategy resources of Metal Blade are massive. I wanted Déluge to be more present on an international scene for the new album and it is already working.

On your Facebook page, under genre it says “Untrve French Black Metal”: why do you want to distance yourself from the black metal scene of your Country?
It is more about honesty. I discovered BM very late I did not want to play the “trve” card because this is not what we do.

What are your long-term goals as a band?
I want to do with Black-Metal what Gojira did to Death-Metal.
