Dopo 11 anni, per i Nightfall è arrivato il momento di rimettersi in gioco con il nuovo album “At Night We Prey” (Season of Mist Records), un’opera molto oscura e personale, che affronta il tema della battaglia di Efthimis Karadimas contro la depressione.

Ciao Efthimis, dopo tutti questi anni sei ancora eccitato prima della data di uscita di un tuo nuovo album?
Penso che questo sia il motivo principale per cui facciamo musica, Giuseppe, l’eccitazione. Sì, lo sono, e spero che sarai anche tu grazie ad “At Night We Prey”, mio ​​amico.

I vostri ultimi due album, “Astron Black and the Thirty Tyrants” e “Cassiopeia”, sono stati accolti con buone recensioni e sono stati molto apprezzati dai fan, sarà lo stesso per “At Night We Prey”?
Lo spero. Abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio per produrre un album heavy, con buona musica e un profondo significato lirico: la depressione. Sono sicuro che hai sentito molto parlare di questa malattia. È stata una pandemia ben prima dell’attuale Covid-19 e, sebbene molti di noi ne soffrano, solo pochi ne parlano apertamente. Con “At Night We Prey” vogliamo affrontare questo problema e ispirare le persone, soprattutto di età più giovane, ad accettarla come una situazione normale, senza paura del rifiuto o paura di essere stigmatizzati dagli altri.

Dopo la pausa del 2013, quando hai sentito che era il momento di tornare con un nuovo album dei Nightfall?
Era giunto il momento di iniziare la quarta stagione della serie chiamata Nightfall. Siamo il tipo di artisti che hanno bisogno di lunghe pause per far crescere l’ispirazione. Se vedi la nostra discografia, noterai che ne abbiamo fatte parecchie. Nel dettaglio delle stagioni: 1 ° negli anni ’90 con i dischi della Holy; 2 ° negli anni 2000 con la Black Lotus; 3 ° negli anni ’10 con la potente Metal Blade; e ora la 4 ° negli anni ’20 con SoM. Immagino che il nostro approccio alla pubblicazione degli album sia più vicino a quello della cinematografia o di Netflix che all’industria musicale.

Dopo due album è finita l’avventura The Slayerking?
Non direi. Dobbiamo ancora fare tante cose congli The Slayerking. Dopo tutto quel gruppo mi ha trascinato fuori dal mucchio di merda che era la mia vita pochi anni fa. E’ stata la mia psicoterapia e grazie ad essi i Nightfall hanno seguito l’esempio. Hai ascoltato “Tetragrammaton”? Sono molto orgoglioso di quell’album.

“At Night We Prey” è caratterizzato dal ritorno di Mike Galiatsos, come è stato lavorare di nuovo con il tuo vecchio fratello d’armi?
È sempre bello suonare con dei buoni amici.

Secondo il foglio promozionale, il concept dell’album riguarda la tua battaglia contro la depressione: “At Night We Prey” è il tuo album più introspettivo?
È un argomento molto serio e, poiché è una storia vera e io sono abbastanza maturo per scriverne e cantarne, ne esce forte e solido. In questo senso, suona sicuramente come l’opera più introspettiva di tutte. Ho saputo della mia situazione non molto tempo fa e la decisione di uscire allo scoperto e parlarne apertamente è stata immediata. Non ci ho pensato molto. Mi sono detto, avrei dovuto prestare maggiore attenzione ai segni in questi anni, e agire molto prima, anni fa, e non soffrire come ho fatto, senza conoscerne il motivo. Questo è il messaggio di questo album attraverso il mio paradigma: apriti, parlane, accetta la situazione e chiedi assistenza medica. Non cadere nella trappola di “Sto bene, mi sono solo sentito un po’ giù ma ora sto bene” per paura di essere stigmatizzato dagli altri. Le generazioni precedenti avevano un approccio molto stupido alla depressione: uno è normale o pazzo, pazzo, pazzo. Non c’è niente in mezzo. Questo stereotipo ha fatto soffrire molte persone nell’ombra. Questo deve finire adesso! Dobbiamo fermarlo.

In “At Night We Prey” c’è un feeling di vecchi Nightfall, come un ritorno alle radici del tuo sound: sei d’accordo?
Sono molto confuso su quali siano le nostre radici e dove stanno andando. Penso che ci evolviamo come band ogni volta e, a volt,e le cose che stiamo facendo ricordano situazioni precedenti. Ma siamo sempre in movimento. Il movimento è fondamentale nella nostra arte. Le radici sono per gli alberi. Le persone sono fatte per andare sempre avanti, e questo è ciò che rende l’arte e la vita eccitanti.

Non solo il prossimo album, la vostra nuova etichetta, la Season of Mist, ha ristampato gli album che erano stati prodotti dalla Holy Records negli anni ’90. Cosa ne pensi di “Holy Nightfall – The Black Leather Cult Years”?
È stupefacente. Questi album della prima stagione dei Nightfall meritavano di essere ristampati. La gente continuava a chiedermelo ed è molto bello che finalmente sia successo. Sono riuscito a non rimasterizzarli, per preservare il suono originale degli anni ’90. La SoM mi ha mandato le copie del nostro LP pochi giorni fa, e devo dire che il suono è molto buono. Sai, la maggior parte di loro non è mai uscita su vinile. Quindi, è davvero una cosa importante sta accadendo. Ho appena ascoltato “Diva Futura” su vinile e suona completamente diverso dalla versione che si sente su cd, o peggio ancora su mp3. La sua produzione è fantastica e ci chiediamo quanto siamo stati capaci e fortunati in quel momento, creando un simile mostro. Tanti anni fa, e ora finalmente suona come dovrebbe. Devi assolutamente sentirli.

Nel prossimo tour suonerete più canzoni dalle vostre prime uscite?
Sì, ne abbiamo già provati due dal vivo in studio, per mostrare alle persone quanto suonano bene. Li hai guardati? “Ishtar” e “As Your God is Failing Once Again”. Fatemi sapere cosa ne pensate.

Forse per la prima volta, Nightfall, Rotting Christ e Septicflesh sono sotto la stessa etichetta, ci sarà un’opportunità di fare un tour insieme?
Un tour del genere sarebbe davvero fantastico. The Greek Holy Trinity in tour, una bella idea, ma tutto dipende dai tour booking: sono loro che organizzano tutto.

After 11 years, for Nightfall is the time to get back in the game with the new album “At Night We Prey” (Season of Mist Records), a very dark and personal effort, tackling the topic of Efthimis Karadimas’s battle with depression.

Hi Efthimis, after all these years are you still excited before the release date of your new album?
I think this is the main reason we do music these days Giuseppe, excitement. Yes, I am, and I hope you will too be with “At Night We Prey”, my friend.

Your last two albums, “Astron Black and the Thirty Tyrants” and “Cassiopeia”, were welcomed with good reviews and were loved by your fans, will be the same for “At Night We Prey”?
I hope so. We did our best to produce a heavy album, with good music and a huge meaning lyric-wise; depression. I am sure you’ve heard a lot about this disease. It’s been a pandemic well before current Covid-19, and though many of us suffer from it, only few openly talk about it. With At Night We Prey we want to address that problem and inspire people, especially of younger age, to accept it as a normal situation, without fear of rejection or fear of getting stigmatized by others. Befriend it.

After the hiatus dated 2013, when did you feel that was the moment to get back with a new album by Nightfall?
It was about time to start the 4^th season of the series named Nightfall J We are the type of artists that need long pauses to let inspiration grow in. If you see our discography, you will notice we have done that quite a lot. We come out in seasons: 1^st in the 90s with Holy records; 2^nd in the 00s with Black Lotus; 3^rd in the 10s with mighty Metal Blade; and now the 4^th in the 20s with SoM. I guess our approach to releasing albums is closer to cinematography or Netflix than to music industry.

After two albums is the adventure The Slayerking ended?
No way. We still have to do things with The Slayerking. After all that band dragged me out of a pile of shit my life was into few years back. It was my psychotherapy and thanks to it, Nightfall followed suit. Did you listen to the Tetragrammaton? I am so proud of that album.

At Night We Prey is characterized by the return of Mike Galiatsos, how was to work again with your old brother in arms?
It’s always nice playing with good friends.

In according with promo sheet, the album topic is about your battle with depression: is “At Night We Prey” your most introspective album?
It is a very serious subject and because it is a true story and I am mature enough to write and sing about it, it comes out loud, and solid. In that sense, it surely sounds like the most well-presented introspective of them all. I learnt about my situation not much time ago, and the decision to come out and speak about it openly was instant. I did not think of it that much. I said to myself, I should have paid better attention to the signs all those years, and take action much earlier, years ago, and not suffering the way I did, without knowing the reason. This is the message in this album via my paradigm: open up, speak about it, accept the situation and ask medical assistance. Don’t fall into the trap of “I am ok, I just felt a bit down but now I am ok” out of fear of being stigmatized by others. Previous generations had a very stupid approach to depression: one is either normal or madman, crazy, lunatic. There’s nothing in between. That stereotype caused many people suffering in the shadows. This must stop now! We must stop it.

In the “At Night We Prey” there’s an old Nightfall feeling, like a back to roots of your sound: are you agree?
I am so confused about what our roots are and where they are going J I think we evolve as a band every time and sometimes the things we are passing through remind of previous situations. But we always are in motion. Moving is fundamental in our art. Roots are for the trees. People is good to move on all the time, and that is what makes art and life exciting, if you asked me.

Not only the next album, your new label, Season of Mist, re-realesed the band’s original albums that were produced by Holy Records back in the 90s. What do you think about “Holy Nightfall – The Black Leather Cult Years”?
It is amazing. These albums from the 1^st season of Nightfall had to be reissued. People kept on asking me and it is so cool it finally happened. I managed not to remaster them, in order to preserve the original sound of the 90s. SoM sent me our LP copies few days ago, and I must say their sound is sooo good. You know that, most of them never got out on vinyl at all. So, it’s a big thing happening to us really. I just listened to the “Diva Futura” on vinyl and it totally sounds different to the album one can hear on cd, or even worse on mp3s. Its production is massive and one wonders how capable and lucky we were at that time, creating such a monster. So many years ago, and now finally it sounds as it should. You definitely oughta check them out.

In the next tour will you play more songs form your first releases?
Yes, we already did two of them live in the studio, to show people how good they sound. Have you watched them? “Ishtar” and “As Your God is Failing Once Again”. Let me know what you think.

Maybe for the first time, Nightfall, Rotting Christ and Septicflesh are under the same label, there will be an opportunity of tour together?
A tour like that would be really cool. The Greek Holy Trinity on the road. That’s a nice idea.  It all depends on the tour agencies. They arrange everything.
