Dopo tre decenni, il primo album degli Speckmann Project (1991) resta un capolavoro per gli amanti del death metal di tutto il mondo! Speckmann Project ritorna con un secondo album, intitolato “Fiends Of Emptiness” (Emanzipation Productions), scritto da Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Johansson & Speckmann, Massacre, Necrogod, Ribspreader) con Paul Speckmann che si è occupato di tutti i testi.

Ciao Paul, vivi in ​​Europa da alcuni anni, cosa provi in questi giorni in cui la guerra è tornata qui in nel Vecchio Continente?
La guerra non è mai una buona cosa. Certo, Putin è un megalomane, e non certo il primo! Tutto quello che possiamo fare in questo momento è guardare e aspettare perché nessuno desidera davvero la terza guerra mondiale! Sono anni che scrivo canzoni su politici e governi pazzi, ma vedere queste cose diventare realtà è certamente terrificante! Politici e governi hanno troppo potere su tutti! È tempo di sottomettere i politici!

Quando hai capito che era giunto il momento di pubblicare un nuovo album con il moniker Speckmann Project?
L’idea è venuta da Rogga con il quale ho pubblicato cinque album come Johansson-Speckmann e molte di queste registrazioni sono passate inosservate. È davvero un peccato, dato che abbiamo registrato degli ottimi dischi insieme! Rogga mi ha detto che un disco con il logo Speckmann avrebbe avuto maggiori possibilità di essere ascoltato, ho accolto con entusiasmo questa idea, e sembra che effettivamente ci sia già più interesse per questa pubblicazione!

Pensi che questo album sia paragonabile in qualche modo al debutto, “Speckmann Project”?
È completamente diverso, con scariche di energia brevi, veloci e aggressive! La prima uscita aveva tracce più lunghe. Questa nuova versione va dritta al punto.

Pensi che ci siano differenze tra Speckmann Project e Master?
Ovviamente, di solito scrivo tutta la musica per la band, mentre per “Fiends of Emptiness” se ne è occupato esclusivamente Rogga! Ancora una volta si è trattato di una grande collaborazione! Mi piace lavorare con Mr. Johansson! Per quanto riguarda il primo Speckmann Project, ho scritto la maggior parte delle tracce, ma c’erano anche alcune grandi parti din Jim Martinelli!

La musica è stata scritta da Rogga, i testi da te: cosa hai provato quando hai ascoltato le nuove canzoni per la prima volta? Erano i riff che ti aspettavi per Speckmann Project?
Per nulla, scriviamo in modo diverso l’uno dall’altro! Posso spiegare come ha funzionato: Rogga mi ha inviato due tracce e mi ha chiesto se mi piaceva quello che avevo sentito. Fondamentalmente ha detto che si trattava di old school e che scriveva solo un po’ di punk, in stile death metal primordiale, secondo lui! In realtà, ho scritto i testi per la prime traccia in circa 10 minuti, seguite dalla seconda più tardi la sera. Sono andato in studio e ho registrato la voce e l’ho inviata ai ragazzi per la loro opinione. Hanno convenuto che si trattava di killer song e hanno iniziato a scrivere più canzoni e a inviarmele! Non mi ci vuole molto a scrivere i testi se le canzoni sono già killer! Un punto importante che devo sottolineare è che ho buttato giù tutti i testi per questa uscita, così come per la prossima del J-S, durante una positività di 7 settimane per Covid! E’ accaduto nel 2020! L’ho scoperto solo 4 mesi fa, dopo un esame del sangue per qualcosa di non correlato!

Che mi dici dei testi?
I testi vengono sempre scritti in un certo momento e in un certo luogo della storia, quindi nulla è cambiato in questa disamina, amico mio! Il mondo intorno a noi è un’ottima guida per i testi!

La copertina del nuovo album si ispira all’artwork del primo: dopo tutti questi anni sei cambiato di più come uomo o come musicista?
Entrambi, scrivo i testi più velocemente, e ovviamente sono invecchiato come fanno tutti, ho 58 anni e viaggio ancora per il mondo! Non si può certo dire che lo facciano ancora tutti nel giro!

Guardando indietro, sei soddisfatto della tua carriera con il Master?
Una domanda un po’ bizzarra, i Master e tutti i miei progetti mi hanno portato in giro per il mondo innumerevoli volte, e sono riuscito a guadagnarmi da vivere con la mia musica: per alcuni è un hobby, per me è uno stile di vita!

Sei sicuramente uno dei pionieri del metal estremo, ma ti consideri il padre del death metal?
Ci sono molti persone che possono rivendicare il titolo, ma di certo io ci sono stato dall’inizio. “Fuckin’ Death” dei Deathstrike è stato registrato nella primavera del 1985, direi che questo possa bastare!

Speckmann Project returns with a sophomore album entitled “Fiends Of Emptiness” (Emanzipation Productions), written by Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Johansson & Speckmann, Massacre, Necrogod, Ribspreader) while Paul Speckmann has penned all of the lyrics.

Hi Paul, you have been living in Europe for some years, how do you feel in these hard days when the war is back here in Europe?
War is never a good thing. Of course, Putin is a megalomaniac, and certainly not the first! All we can do is watch and wait at the moment as no one including yours truly, wants to see World War 3! I have been writing songs about politicians and crazy governments for years, but to see these things become a reality is certainly terrifying! Politicians and governments have too much power over everyone! It’s time to subdue the politicians!

When did you understand that was the time release a new album under the moniker of Speckmann Project?
The idea came from Rogga as he and I have released 5 recordings together as Johansson-Speckmann and many of these recordings have slipped by un-noticed. It’s really quite a shame, as we have recorded some excellent records together! Rogga said to me that a record under the Speckmann moniker would have a better chance of being heard, so I went along with this idea, and it seems that yes, there is more interest in this release already!

How do you think this album compares to your debut, “Speckmann Project”?
It’s completely different, with short, fast, aggressive bursts of energy! The first release had longer drawn out tracks. This new release gets right to the point.

What do you think separates Speckmann Project from Master?
That’s obvious, I write all the music for the bands normally, and this time Rogga wrote the music for the “Fiends of Emptiness”! It’s a great collaboration once again! I enjoy working with Mr. Johansson! As for the first Speckmann Project, I wrote the biggest majority of the tracks, but there were also a few great collaborations with Jim Martinelli back in the day!

The music was written by Rogga, lyrics by you: What did you feel when you listen to the new songs for the first time? Were riffs you’ve come to expect by Speckmann Project?
Not at all we write differently from one another! I can explain how it worked. Rogga sent 2 tracks to me and asked if I liked what I heard. He basically said this was old school writing just simple punky, Death Metal style from the early beginnings of the genre in his opinion! I actually wrote the lyrics for the first tracks in about 10 minutes followed by the 2^nd track later in the evening. I went to the studio and recorded the vocals and sent them to the guys for their opinion. The agreed that the tracks were killer and they began to write more songs and send them to me like always! It doesn’t really take long to write lyrics for me if the songs are killer already! An important point I need to make was that I recorded all the lyrics for this release as well as the next J-S release during a 7-week bout with Covid! This was back in 2020! I only found out about it 4 months ago after a blood test for something non-related!

What’s about lyrics?
Lyrics are always written around a time and place in history, so nothing has changed at all in this retrospect my friend! The world around us is a great map for lyrics!

The new album cover is inspired by the artwork of the first one: after all these years have you changed more as a man or as a musician?
Both, I write lyrics faster, and of course I have aged as everyone does, I am 58 years old, and still bringing it to the world!  It cannot be said for everyone still in the genre!

Looking back, are you satisfied of your career with Master?
A bit of a silly question, Master and all my projects have taken me across the globe countless times, and I have managed to make a living off my music, as for some it’s a hobby, for me it’s a way of life!

You are definitely one of the pioneers of extreme metal, but do you look at yourself as the father of death metal?
There are many fellas that can claim the title, but I certainly have been around since the inception of the genre. Deathstrike “Fuckin’ Death”, was recorded in the spring 1985, enough said!
