Walter “Crom” Grosse (Dark Fortress) è tornato con “The Era Of Darkness” (From the Vaults), il miglior album dal debutto “Vengeance” (2008) del suo progetto epic metal Crom.

Benvenuto Walter, come è nasto il tuo nuovo album “The Era of Darkness”?
Ciao, l’intero album è stato scritto da me come già fatto in passato. Ma questa volta ho avuto l’opportunità di arrangiare le canzoni insieme al nostro batterista Tom. Questo è stato un nuovo approccio per me perché non l’avevo mai fatto prima per i Crom. Matthias Landes è un grande batterista e ha fatto un ottimo lavoro in studio. Ma con Heber abbiamo avuto il tempo di lavorare insieme alle canzoni. E penso che questo sia stato un miglioramento importante in “The Era of Darkness”.

Quanto sei soddisfatto del risultato?
Sono totalmente soddisfatto di “The Era of Darkness”! Penso che sia il miglior album dal debutto “Vengeance” e le reazioni dei fan e delle fanzine dimostrano che ho ragione. Ho riascoltato le canzoni molto spesso e non c’è niente che farei diversamente. Questo è sempre stato molto importante per me. Voglio ascoltare le mie canzoni anni dopo ed essere soddisfatto come lo ero dopo l’uscita.

Questa formazione ha debuttato nel precedente EP “Into the Glory Land”, avete sentito una maggiore affinità tra di voi durante la registrazione di “The Era Of Darkness” rispetto alla precedente release?
Ovviamente come band si cresce con ogni nota suonata insieme e ovviamente sapevo di più su come lavorare con i miei compagni di band durante i preparativi di “The era of Darkness”. Ma non abbiamo registrato insieme. Tom e io abbiamo fatto le registrazioni di batteria insieme, ma il resto delle registrazioni è stato fatto separatamente. Ho inciso tutta la musica e la voce da solo nel mio studio di casa e così ha fatto Steve con le sue parti da solista. Ma non credo che questo abbia avuto una cattiva influenza sull’album.

Quali sono le novità che avete introdotto in questo album?
Non credo ci siano molte novità in questo album. Ho solo cercato di scrivere canzoni buone e versatili come ho fatto in passato. Volevo migliorare l’interazione tra batteria, basso e chitarra e, grazie a Tom, questo è stato possibile per la prima volta nella storia dei Crom.

Come è cambiato il tuo approccio alla musica in questi anni?
È lo stesso. Secondo me non ho cambiato approccio neanche interagendo con Tom. In termini di songwriting e approccio alle canzoni, sono rimasto molto old-school. Non credo che potrei fare in altro modo.

Siete stati etichettato in un “genere” come l’epic metal, ma ti vedi come parte di questa scena in particolare?
A causa di questioni private ho perso i contatti con tutte le scene in cui sono mai stato (se mai ho fatto davvero parte di una scena). Sono stato un artista solitario per tanti anni e non ho mai avuto molti contatti con altre band, promotor o persone importanti. Ora che suoniamo live, riesco a connettermi con le persone come mai prima d’ora. Forse in futuro faremo parte di una scena. Ma sinceramente non mi interessa. Per me è importante essere soddisfatto del nostro lavoro e spero che lo siano anche i fan.

Ci sono differenze tra la versione di “Into the Glory Land” dell’EP e quella del nuovo album?
Ovviamente! È stata registrata completamente di nuovo, solo poche linee vocali sono state riutilizzate. La versione dell’EP è stata mixata dal nostro chitarrista Steve. Ma non è un tecnico del suono professionista. Ha fatto un ottimo lavoro ma ovviamente Victor dei Woodshed Studio ha saputo dare più potenza a questa canzone.

L’era delle tenebre è quella in cui viviamo?
È divertente perché mi viene fatta questa domanda molto spesso. “L’era delle tenebre” non ha alcun riferimento alla nostra attuale situazione mondiale, alla politica o all’ambiente. Non è mai stato intesa in quel modo e non ci ho nemmeno pensato nemmeno. È solo una classica creazione dei Crom legata a un mondo fantastico, al suo declino e alla sua resurrezione.

Suonerete sul palco le nuove canzoni?
Sì, in realtà già lo facciamo e continueremo a suonare altre nuove canzoni. Al nostro releas show abbiamo suonato “Into the Glory Land”, “Higher Ground”, “The Era of Darkness”, “Together We Ride”, “Riding into the Sun” e “When Will the Wounds Ever Heal”. Forse suoneremo “Heart of the Lion” e “Bridge to Paradise” anche in futuro. Ma è molto difficile trovare una buona scelta di canzoni per un concerto di 60 minuti quando hai pubblicato quattro album. E le canzoni dei Crom non durano solo tre minuti…

Welcome Walter, how is born your new album “The Era of Darkness”?
Hi, the whole album was written by myself like I did it in the past. But this time I had the opportunity to arrange the songs together with our drummer Tom. This was a new way for me because I’ve never done this with Crom before. With Matthias Landes I had a great drummer who did a great job in the studio. But we Heber had the time to work on the songs together. And I think that this was an important improvement on “The Era of darkness”.

How satisfied are you with the result?
I am totally satisfied with the era of darkness!!! I think it’s the best album since my debut album Vengeance and the reactions of fans and zines show that I am right. I’ve listened to the songs very very often and there is nothing I would do in another way. This was always very important for me. I will listen to my songs years later and be as satisfied as I was after the release.

This line-up debuted on the previous EP “Into the Glory Land”, did you feel a greater affinity between you during the recording of “The Era Of Darkness” compared to the previous release?
Of course as a band you grow with every note you play together and of course I knew more about how to work with my band mates during the preparations of “The era of darkness”. But we didn’t record the music together. Tom and me did the drum recordings together but the rest of the recordings was done separately. I recorded the whole music and vocals all alone at my home studio and so did Steve with his solo parts. But I don’t think that this had a bad influence on the album.

What are the novelties you introduced in this album?
I don’t think there are really much novelties on this album. I just tried to write good and versatile songs like I did in the past. I wanted to improve the interaction between drums, bass and guitar and due to Tom this was possible for the first time in Crom history.

How did you change your approach to the music in these years?
It’s the same here. In my opinion I didn’t change the approach instead of interacting with Tom. In terms of songwriting and the approach to the songs, I have remained very old-school. I don’t think I could do it any other way.

You’ve been tagged into ‘genre’ such as epic metal, but do you see yourselves as part of any particular scene?
Due to private things I have lost the reference to all the scenes I’ve ever been in (if I ever really was part of a scene). I was a solo artist for so much years and I never had a lot of contact with other bands, promoters or important people. Now that we are playing gigs I get connections to people as much as never before. Maybe in the future we will be a part of a scene. But honestly I don’t care about that. It’s important for me that I am satisfied with our work and hopefully the fans also will be.

Are there differences between the version of “Into the Glory Land” on the EP and the one on the new album?
Of course!! It’s completely new recorded, only a few vocal lines were used again. The version of the EP was mixed by our guitar player Steve. But he is not a professional sound engineer. He did a great job but of course Victor from Woodshed studio knew how to give this song more power.

Is the era of darkness the one we are living in?
It’s funny because I get asked this question very often. The “Era of Darkness” should never actually have any reference to our current world situation, politics or environment. It was never meant that way and I never had this in mind either. It’s only a classic Crom fiction about a fantasy world, its decline and resurrection.

Will you play on stage the new songs?
Yes, we actually do and we will continue to play more new songs. At our release concert we played “Into the glory land”, “Higher Ground”, “The Era of Darkness”, “Together We Ride”, “Riding into the Sun”, and “When Will the Wounds Ever Heal”. Maybe We Will Play “Heart of the Lion” and “Bridge to Paradise” also in the future. But it’s very hard to find a good choice of songs for a 60 minutes gig when you have released four albums. And Crom songs don’t last only three minutes…
