Qualche giorno prima della pubblicazione del nuovo album dei F.K.Ü., “The Horror and the Metal” (Despotz Records), abbiamo parlato con Pat Splat, non solo della nuova release, ma anche del suo amore per il metal, l’horror e il “giallo all’italiana”…
Benvenuto Pat, il prossimo febbraio pubblicherete il vostro nuovo album “The Horror and the Metal”. Quanto tempo avete impiegato a scrivere e registrare le canzoni per questa uscita?
Abbiamo scritto a intermittenza per circa un anno prima della registrazione. La registrazione è stata suddivisa in tre mesi di session diverse.
È nato prima il tuo amore per l’horror o per il metal?
Penso che l’horror vinca di qualche anno. Ricordo di essermi intrufolato dietro il divano dinnanzi alla TV all’età di 5-6 anni per dare una sbirciatina a “L’invasione degli ultracorpi” e a “La sposa di Frankenstein”.
Ti piacciono i film horror italiani degli anni ’70 di Argento, Bava, Fulci, ecc.?
Adoriamo assolutamente i maestri del “giallo” italiano come Argento e Fulci. Il brano “House by the Cemetery” sul nostro album “1981” ne è una prova evidente!
“Non segue nessuna tendenza, è horror e metal fino alla fine”: ma dopo tutti questi anni, non ti sei stancato di unire film horror e metal?
È come quando trovi la marca perfetta di caffè o la tua pizza preferita, quando finalmente l’hai trovata, perché cambiare? E a essere onesti, esiste una combinazione migliore dell’horror e del metal? Non pensiamo davvero che ci sia.
Quali sono le principali differenze tra il vostro ultimo album, “1981” e quello nuovo? In passato i vostri album contenevano molti brani, il nuovo solo 10, perché avete optato per un approccio più diretto?
Penso di parlare a nome di tutti i membri della band dicendo che siamo rimasti davvero soddisfatti di come è andato il “1981”. Volevamo realizzare un album intenso, concentrandoci sulla velocità e sull’eliminazione del grasso in eccesso. Suonando quelle canzoni dal vivo, però, ci siamo resi conto che ci mancavano davvero alcune delle vecchie canzoni da “cantare insieme” come “The Pit and The Poser” o “Scream Bloody Mosher”. Quindi, in “The Horror and The Metal” parte della nostra attenzione è stata posta nello scrivere quel tipo di brani più lunghi.
Mi sembra che abbiate scelto un approccio più semplice anche per la copertina, dove compaiono solo i tuoi quattro volti. Perché avete fatto una scelta diversa rispetto al passato per “The Horror and the Metal”?
Con il nuovo album volevamo davvero concentrarci sul nucleo band dei F.K.Ü. Da qui il titolo “The Horror and The Metal”. È anche un viaggio indietro nel tempo, agli inizi della band, quando la nostra ambizione era avere i membri della band sulla copertina. Il ritorno del nostro disegnatore delle copertine originario, Fredrik Tjärnström, che ha creato le illustrazioni per i nostri primi due album, ha ulteriormente rafforzato la nostra visione.
La band ha qualche show o tour in programma a sostegno di “The Horror and the Metal”?
Abbiamo alcuni spettacoli programmati in Svezia in prossimità della data di uscita, ma stiamo lavorando per organizzare un tour vero e proprio.
Con un nuovo album come questo appena pubblicato, quali sono i piani dei F.K.Ü.?
Sarebbe bello poter uscire a suonare le nuove canzoni davanti a tutti voi moshoholics là fuori!
A few days before the release of F.K.Ü. new album, “The Horror and the Metal” (Despotz Records), we spoke with Pat Splat (bass), not only about the new release, but also about his love for metal, horror and “Italian Giallo” …
Welcome Pat, next February you will release your new album “The Horror and the Metal” how long did it take you guys to write and record the songs for this release?
Writing on and off in about a year before the recording. The recording was spread over three months different sessions.
Was born before your love for horror or for metal?
I think the horror wins by a few years. Remembering sneaking up behind the TV-sofa at the age of 5-6 having a sneak peek at Invasion of “The Body Snatchers” and “The Bride of Frankenstein”.
Do you like Italian ‘70 horror movies by Argento, Bava, Fulci, etc?
We absolutely love the “Italian Giallo”-masters like Argento and Fulci. The track “House by the Cemetery” on our “1981”-album is one obvious proof of that!
”Never part of any trend, it’s horror and metal till the end”: but after all those years, aren’t you bored of combining horror movies and metal together?
Pat: It’s like when finding the ultimate brand of coffee or your favourite pizza, when you finally found it, why change? And to be honest, is there a better combination than horror and metal? We really don’t think there is.
What are the main differences between your last album,”1981″ and the new one? In the past your albums contained many tracks, the new one only 10, why did you opt for a more direct approach?
I think that I speak for all members of the band saying that we were really satisfied in the way “1981” turned out. We wanted to make an intense album, focusing on speed and trim off any excess fat. Playing those songs live though, we realized that we really missed some of the older “sing-along”-type of songs like “The Pit and The Poser” or “Scream Bloody Mosher”. So, on “The Horror and The Metal” some of our focus was on writing that kind of longer anthems.
It seems to me that you also chose a simpler approach for the cover, where only your four faces appear. Why didn’t you make a different choice than in the past for “The Horror and the Metal”?
With the new album we really wanted to focus on the core of the band F.K.Ü. Hence the title “The Horror and The Metal”. It’s also a trip back to the beginning of the band when having the band members on the front cover was our thing. The comeback of our original cover artist, Fredrik Tjärnström who created the art for our two first albums further strengthened our vision.
Does the band have any upcoming shows or tours in support of “The Horror and
the Metal”?
We have some shows booked in Sweden in connection to the release date but are working to get a proper tour going.
With this new album just freshly released, what’s next for F.K.Ü.?
That would be to get out to play the new songs in front of all you moshoholics out there!
