Come già suggeriscono la copertina e il titolo del nuovo album, “Baptized by Fire” (El Puerto Records), questo nuovo capitolo è “heavy” come mai prima d’ora. Con David abbiamo parlato della nuova uscita, della sua recente collaborazione con Stephan Georg e del suo “italiano”…
Bentornato David, la nostra ultima chiacchierata risale ai tempi della pubblicazione di “Blacklist Utopia”. Sei ancora soddisfatto di quell’album?
Ciao, è bello tornare a chiacchierare con te. “Blacklist Utopia” di cui sono molto fiero, è un disco onesto che rappresenta me e ciò a cui punto.
Ciò che appare chiaro fin dal primo ascolto è che “Baptized by Fire” è decisamente un disco molto più pesante. Anche la copertina è dannatamente heavy metal. È stata una mossa pianificata quella di rafforzare il vostro sound o l’album è uscito così, spontaneamente?
Penso che il mio feeling musicale del momento mi spingesse in quella direzione. La copertina richiama il Chief che utilizzo nelle mie cose a nome David Reece e questa volta è, come dici tu, davvero visivamente heavy. L’artwork è nato da una collaborazione tra me e Ritchie Newton della Newton Artworxx. Sono molto soddisfatto della copertina, ci permette anche di realizzare fantastiche magliette e merchandise. Per quanto riguarda la musica, sì, è pesante ma conserva ancora i ritornelli melodici che ho sempre fatto, penso che sia una progressione naturale nel mio viaggio.
Le canzoni sono il risultato di un lavoro di squadra? Ancora una volta ti sei avvalso dell’aiuto di musicisti italiani, vuoi presentarli?
Sì, questo disco è decisamente il frutto di un lavoro di squadra. Ho iniziato a scriverlo con il bassista produttore Riccardo Demarosi circa nove mesi fa e la canzoni hanno iniziato a prendere una certa direzione. Riccardo è un grande musicista e produttore, abbiamo registrato molte cose insieme quindi ci conosciamo a fondo, non dobbiamo neanche parlarci molto. Il chitarrista è il favoloso Niccolò Savinelli! Penso davvero che sia speciale come chitarrista e suona in modo così naturale e sembra sapere sempre di cosa ha bisogno la canzone. In realtà gli ho detto di impazzire e suonare qualunque cosa che gli saltasse in mente durante la scrittura e le registrazioni, e come puoi sentire, è incredibile. Nello Savinelli è ovviamente il fratello di Niccolò alla batteria. Ho effettuato molte registrazioni con Nello e ho capito fin dall’inizio il suo grande talento. Ha un grande tempismo, una grande attitudine ed è un professionista completo! In realtà quando proviamo questi ragazzi sono divertenti ma molto seri e mi spingono davvero a essere e a cantare al meglio. Sono molto fortunato ad avere persone così fantastiche con cui lavorare e creare musica.
Frequentando musicisti italiani, hai imparato qualche parola di italiano negli ultimi anni?
Sì, io sto andando a scuola per imparare l’italiano tutte le settimane perché penso che è molto importante imparare la lingua del paese dove vivi. (Risposta direttamente in italiano nda)
C’è stato invece un momento nella tua vita in cui sei stato battezzato dal fuoco?
Credo che la vita musicale sia in realtà un battesimo del fuoco, è un viaggio senza fine in cui si tenta di scrivere e creare e, sinceramente, non è sempre viene accettato da chi ti sta intorno, quindi devi andare avanti e credere in te stesso e in ciò che stai cercando di fare.
Nel 2023 è uscito l’album “Swallow the Glow”, come è nata la tua collaborazione con Stephan Georg?
Conosco Stephan Georg da molto tempo e ha sempre sostenuto la mia carriera, mi sono onorato quando mi ha chiesto di far parte del suo disco. Lui lavora sempre, quando vedo le persone spingere, è una cosa che rispetto molto.
Suonerai le canzoni di “Swallow the Glow” dal vivo?
Non suonerò nessuna di quelle canzoni nel mio live set, ma se mi chiedesse di unirmi a lui sul palco con il suo gruppo, ovviamente lo farei volentieri.
A proposito di live, hai già qualche data in programma?
Sì, in realtà ho delle date in America a partire dal 1 marzo e anche quattro date in Danimarca e Svezia ad aprile e attualmente sto programmando altri spettacoli in ‘America per l’estate e altri spettacoli durante tutto l’anno in Europa. Welcome back David, our last chat dates back to the time of the publication of “Blacklist Utopia”. Are you still satisfied with that album?
Ciao, it’s good to be back chatting with you. “Blacklist Utopia” I’m very proud of actually, it’s an honest record that represents me and where I wanted to go.
What appears clear from the first listen is that “Baptized by Fire” is definitely a much heavier record. Even the cover is typically and fucking heavy metal. Was it a planned move to harden your sound or did the album come out like that, spontaneously?
I think it was where my feeling was going musically.The cover is a continuation of the Chief I use in my David Reece brand and this time he’s as you say really heavy visually.The artwork was a collaboration between myself and Ritchie Newton at Newton Artworxx, I’m very pleased with the cover, it also makes great t shirts and merchandise. As for the music, yes, it’s heavy but still retains the melodic choruses I have always done, but it’s a natural progression I think in the journey.
Are the songs the result of teamwork? Once again you have enlisted the help of Italian musicians, would you like to introduce them?
Yes it’s all about team work this record. I started writing with bassist producer Riccardo Demarosi about nine months ago and the song’s began taking a direction. Riccardo is a great musician and producer, we’ve done lots of recording together, so we basically know each other without having to say much. The guitarist is the fabulous Niccolò Savinelli! I really think he’s special as a guitarist and he plays so naturally and seems to always know what the song’s need. I actually told him to go nuts and play whatever and however he felt during writing and recording and as you can hear he’s incredible. Nello Savinelli is of course Niccolò s brother on drums. I have done alot of recording with Nello and I realized from the beginning his great talents. He has great timing, a great attitude and is a complete professional! Actually when we rehearse these guys are fun but very serious and really push me to be and sing my best. I am very lucky to have such great people to work with and create music with.
By hanging out with Italian musicians, have you learned a few words of Italian in recent years?
Sì, io sto andando a scuola per imparare l’italiano tutti le settimane perché penso che è molto importante imparare la lingua del paese dove vivi. (In Italian)
Instead, was there a moment in your life when you were baptized by fire?
I believe the music life is actually a Baptism by Fire it’s a never ending journey seeking to write and create and truthfully it’s not always accepted by the Masse’s, so you must push forward and believe in yourself and what you are trying to do.
In 2023 the album “Swallow the Glow” was released, how did your collaboration with Stephan Georg come about?
I have known Stephan Georg for a long time and he’s always been supportive of my singing and I was honored he asked me to be part of his record. He always continues to work, which I respect when I see people pushing.
Will you perform songs from “Swallow the Glow” live?
I won’t perform any of those songs in my live set, but if he asked me to join him onstage, of course, with his group I would gladly do it.
Speaking of live, do you already have any dates scheduled?
Yes, I actually have dates in America starting March 1 and also four dates in Denmark and Sweden in April and I am currently scheduling more shows for America later in summer and more shows throughout the year in Europe.
