I danesi Vansind si muovono tra tradizione e modernità, una mistura folk che vede protagonisti, accanto agli strumenti classici del rock, quelli della cultura scandinava. Ma non solo, a dare un fascino esotico all’album di debutto “Mørket” (Mighty Music) ci pensa la cornamusa… Di questo e altro abbiamo parlato con il cantante Joachim Asmussen.
Benvenuto Joachim, potresti presentare la tua band ai nostri lettori? Quando vi siete formati originariamente ed è questa la line-up originale?
Ciao Il Raglio del Mulo, piacere di conoscerti. Siamo la band folk-viking metal Vansind dalla Danimarca. Ci siamo formati nell’estate del 2019 e da allora abbiamo avuto alcuni cambiamenti nella formazione, alla chitarra e al basso, quindi l’attuale non è la formazione originale.
Siete in sette nella formazione, qual è il vostro background musicale?
Sì, siamo sette ora. Abbiamo background musicali diversi, ma tutti noi suoniamo/cantiamo da moltissimi anni. In diversi altri gruppi folk, rock, metal e simili.
Quali obiettivi sperate di raggiungere con i Vansind?
Abbiamo appena pubblicato il nostro album di debutto questo novembre, quindi il nostro obiettivo è suonare alcuni concerti a supporto dell’album, si spera in tutta Europa durante il 2024 e il 2025. E dopo ciò il nostro piano è quello di iniziare a scrivere e registrare il nostro secondo album.
I vostri testi trattano di antiche leggende danesi. Che significato date alle vostre parole: simbolico, politico, religioso o altro?
Non ci sono dichiarazioni politiche o religiose nei nostri testi. Il modo in cui scriviamo i nostri testi ha un approccio narrativo, molto spesso con un tocco oscuro. Tutti i nostri testi prendono spunto da una sorta di racconto “norrøn” che spesso include gli dei pagani/nordici, ma anche da scene di vita più quotidiana delle persone nordiche, sulle loro vite e le loro credenze e su come ciò influenzi le loro scelte.
Cosa pensi delle band non scandinave che suonano vinking metal?
Penso che sia fantastico che le persone al di fuori della Scandinavia siano interessate alla nostra storia e trovino ispirazione nei racconti e nelle leggende dei vichinghi e degli antichi abitanti del nord. E trovo che sia davvero fantastico che le persone di tutto il mondo siano interessate alla nostra musica e alle nostre tradizioni.
Quali strumenti musicali tradizionali si possono ascoltare nell’album?
Abbiamo utilizzato cornamuse, flauti, violino, nyckelharpa e mandolino. Soprattutto la cornamusa è un ingrediente chiave nel “suono” dei Vansind, ed è uno strumento che incorporiamo tanto quanto ha senso nelle canzoni. Non è uno strumento danese tradizionale, ma aggiunge davvero una fantastica atmosfera alla musica e dà una sensazione non moderna accanto alle chitarre elettriche e ai bassi più moderni. In questo modo pensiamo di aver ottenuto un suono che è un mix omogeneo di tradizione e modernità.
Cosa significa “Mørket”?
“Mørket” significa “L’oscurità” in danese. Lo abbiamo scelto come titolo dell’album, perché è un ingrediente chiave nei testi, l’oscurità è una parte di tutto. Oscurità nel significato, ad esempio, di pensieri oscuri/depressivi, azioni malvagie e simili.
Per ora avete realizzato tre video dall’album, avete intenzione di farne altri?
Non intendiamo realizzare altri video per questo album, ma ne faremo assolutamente altri a supporto della nuova musica in futuro. E chissà, magari anche qualcosa tratto da uno spettacolo dal vivo.
Avete qualche data live in programma?
Sì, abbiamo in programma alcuni spettacoli nel 2024 per supportare l’album, alcuni in Danimarca, Germania, Francia, Italia e Inghilterra. E si spera che verranno aggiunti altri paesi. The Danish Vansind move between tradition and modernity, a folk mixture whose protagonists are those of Scandinavian culture alongside the classic rock instruments. But not only that, the bagpipes give an exotic charm to the debut album “Mørket” (Mighty Music)… We talked about this and more with singer Joachim Asmussen.
Welcome Joachim, could you to introduce your band to our readers? When did you originally form and is this the original line-up?
Hi Il Raglio del Mulo, nice to meet you. We are the folk-viking metal band Vansind from Denmark. We formed in summer 2019 and since then we have had a few changes in the lineup, on guitar and bass, so its not the original lineup we are now.
There are seven of you in the line-up, what is your musical background?
Yes we are 7 now. We have different musical backgrounds, but all of us have been playing/singing for many many years. In different other folk, rock, metal bands and such.
What new goals do you hope to achieve with Vansind?
We just released our debut album this november, so our goal right now is playing some support shows for the album, hopefully all over Europe during 2024 and 2025. And after that its our plan to start writing and recording our second album.
Your lyrics deal with ancient Danish legends. What meaning do you give to your words: symbolic, political, religious or other?
We dont use politics or religious statemants in our lyrics. The way we write our lyrics is a storytelling approach, most often with a dark twist. All our lyrics takes a start from some kind of norrøn tale often including the pagan/norse gods, but also from a more everyday life tale, about the norse people, their lives and their beliefs and how that effects their choices in life.
What do you think about non-Scandinam vian bands playing vinking metal?
We think its great that people outside Scandinavia is interested in our history, and find inspiration in the tales and legends of the vikings and old norse people. And we think its really great that the people around the world is interested in our music and traditions.
What traditional musical instruments can be heard on the album?
We have used bagpipes, flutes, violin, nyckelharpa and mandolin. Especially the bagpipes is a key ingredient in the Vansind-‘sound’, and an instrument we incorporate as mush as it makes sense in the songs. Its not an traditional Danish instrument, but it really ads a great vibe to the music, and gives a non-modern feeling beside the more modern electric guitars and bass. In this way we think we have achieved a sound that is a homogenous mix of traditional and modern music.
What does “Mørket” mean?
“Mørket” means “The Darkness” in Danish. We choose that as the album title, because its a key ingredient in the lyrics, that the darkness is a part of everything. Darkness in the meaning of for example dark/depressive thoughts, evil deeds and such.
For now you have made three videos from the album, do you intend to make more?
We dont intend to make more videos for this album, but we will absolutely make some more videos in support of new music in the future. And who knows, maybe even something from a live show.
Do you have any live dates scheduled?
Yes, we have some shows planned in 2024 to support the album, Some in Denmark, Germany, France, Italy and England. And hopefully more countries will be added.
