Sotto il moniker Satanic North si celano quattro oscuri musicisti di origine finlandese, due dei quali celebri per la propria militanza negli Ensiferum. Ed è propprio con uno di questi, Petri Lindroos (aka IIT Caprae), che abbiamo parlato dell’album di esordio omonimo uscito per la Reaper Entertainment.
Benvenuto Petri, la data di uscita del debutto di Satanic North si avvicina ormai, sei emozionato?
Non vediamo l’ora che il nostro album di debutto esca per raccogliere le reazioni della gente. Finora la stampa è stata sorpresa e il feedback è stato ottimo.
Tu e Janne Parviainen suonate negli Ensiferum, l’idea di fondare una nuova band è nata durante uno dei tanti tour condivisi?
Niente affatto, l’idea è nata subito prima che la pandemia imprigionasse il mondo, quindi con un tempismo davvero eccezionale. Gli altri tre membri erano seduti in un bar e alcuni degli Immortal suonavano nel retro. I ragazzi pensarono di formare una band black metal e tutti furono d’accordo, alcuni giorni dopo mi chiamarono per unirmi alla band. Ed eccoci qui adesso.
Rispetto agli impegni presi con gli Ensiferum, cosa rappresentano per voi i Satanic North?
Libertà musicale e il poter seguire semplicemente il flusso creativo, senza pensare a nulla. Tutti noi siamo grandi fan della scena BM degli anni ’90.
Perché avete usato dei nomi di battaglia in questa nuova avventura?
È un tributo alle band che ci hanno preceduto e ci è sembrato giusto usarli, dona un leggero velo di mistero ai membri della band.
Vuoi presentare la formazione?
Alla voce c’è Von Occult, la chitarra è Skomorokh, il basso IIT Caprae e la batteria Abyssir.
Avete dichiarato di aver scelto “War” perché rappresenta appieno l’album. Quali sono le caratteristiche di questo brano che ritroviamo nell’intero lavoro?
Ritmi devastanti e riff veloci con voci brutali, una tempesta totale di violenza e malvagità che non mostra pietà.
Il sound è decisamente old school, la scelta di ritornare alle vostre radici è stata istintiva o pianificata?
Fin dall’inizio sapevamo come doveva essere il suono, vecchia scuola e nient’altro. È stato anche davvero rinvigorente avere di nuovo questo tipo di suono. Questo era il nostro obiettivo quando abbiamo iniziato a scrivere le canzoni ed era importante per noi mantenere il suono il più grezzo e semplice possibile.
Vedremo mai i Satanic North dal vivo?
Assolutamente sì, abbiamo due spettacoli in programma qui in Finlandia e speriamo di uscire presto dai nostri confini per suonare il più possibile.
Dobbiamo aspettarci un secondo album in futuro o questo lavoro rimarrà l’unico?
Si sta già lavorando sul nuovo materiale, quindi arriverà un secondo album che vedrà l’oscurità della notte.
Under the moniker Satanic North hide four obscure musicians of Finnish origin, two of whom are famous for their militancy in Ensiferum. And it is precisely with one of these, Petri Lindroos (aka IIT Caprae), that we spoke about the self-titled debut album released throught Reaper Entertainment.
Welcome Petri, the release date of Satanic North’s debut is now approaching, are you excited?
We are looking very much forward of our debut album coming out and hear the reactions of people. So far the press has been surprised and feedback has been great.
You and Janne Parviainen play in Ensiferum, did the idea of starting a new band come about during one of the many shared tours?
Not at all, the idea came right before the pandemic shut down the world so in a way really great timing. The three other members were sitting in a bar and some Immortal was playing in the back round and the guys thought how about forming a black metal band and everyone agreed, some days later they called me to join the band. And here we are now.
Compared to the commitments made with Ensiferum, what do Satanic North represent for you?
Musical freedom and really going with the flow, not over thinking anything. All of us are big fans of the 90`s BM scene.
Why did you have to use nom de guerre in this new adventure?
It’s an ode to the bands before us and it felt just right to us to have these, it gives a little shroud of mystery to the band members.
Would you like to present the line-up?
On the vocals is Von Occult, guitar is Skomorokh, bass IIT Caprae and drums Abyssir.
You stated that you chose “War” because it fully represents the album. What are the characteristics of this song that we find in the entire work?
Crushing blast beats and fast riffs with brutal vocals, a total storm of violence and evil showing no mercy.
The sound is still old school, was this choice to return to your roots instinctive or planned?
From the start we knew how the sound has tobe, old school and nothing else. It also felt really fresh to have this kind of sound again. So that was our goal when we started to write the songs and sound was important as well to keep it as raw and simple could say.
Will we ever see Satanic North live?
Absolutely yes, we have two shows coming up here in Finland and we hope to get out side our borders to play as much as possible.
Should we expect a second album in the future or will this album remain the only one?
New material is being worked on already so a second album will come and see the darkness of the night.
