Il prossimo 25 ottobre la Osmose Production pubblicherà il terzo album della band belga Bütcher. Non nascondo che aspettavo questo full length con impazienza, perché seguo la band con interesse sin dall’esordio del 2017, “Bestial Fükkin’ Warmachine”. Con vero piacere ho puto parlare con R Hellshrieker del nuovo disco “On Fowl of Tyrant Wing”, lavoro che contiene non poche novità…
Ciao R Hellshrieker, come ci si sente ad avere un nuovo full-length da portare in giro per il mondo?
Ehi, è una bella sensazione! Sono passati quattro anni, quasi cinque, da quando abbiamo pubblicato il nostro precedente album “666 Goats Carry My Chariot”. Ed è andato molto bene per noi. È un onore vedere canzoni come “Iron Bitch” e “45 RPM Metal” andare così bene. Ma vogliamo espandere il nostro set dal vivo, vogliamo suonare il nostro nuovo materiale, quindi siamo entusiasti di pubblicare questo nuovo disco.
Sapete che ci sono grandi aspettative per il vostro terzo album? Di solito il terzo è quello della consacrazione per una band, vi sentite un po’ sotto pressione?
Sì, è la regola generale, non è vero? Non ci sentiamo davvero sotto pressione. Se vi piacciono i Bütcher, sarebbe strano che non apprezzaste questo album, anche se è più raffinato e soprattutto il lato B è un’espansione del nostro sound. Quindi lo vediamo come un’opportunità per presentarci come una band che sta facendo la sua strada. Speriamo che faccia centro con i nostri fan e magari anche con nuove persone. Certo, quando pubblichi qualcosa, speri che alla gente piaccia. Ma non significa che ci sia più pressione per pubblicare il terzo album. La pressione probabilmente aumenterà quando suoneremo dal vivo, haha.
Siete passati da una formazione di tre membri a una di cinque, perché?
In realtà proveniamo da una formazione di quattro membri, non siamo mai stati un trio. KK Ripper è stato l’unico chitarrista per molto tempo, ma poiché suona così tanti assoli heavy metal, avevamo davvero bisogno di migliorare il nostro suoni dal vivo. Max Mayhem è stato il nostro altro chitarrista per molto tempo, ma i programmi di Evil Invaders e dei Bütcher non sono combinabili, troppe cose si sovrappongono. Quindi KV Bonekrusher ha preso la seconda chitarra e ha lasciato il posto di basso, abbiamo accolto R Voidsmasher alla batteria dopo la partenza di LV Speedhämmer e AK Nosferatör ha assunto definitivamente i compiti di basso. Finalmente abbiamo una solida formazione di cinque elementi!
I nuovi membri hanno contribuito alla fase di scrittura e registrazione dell’album?
No, i brani dell’album sono stati scritti e registrati prima che si unissero a noi.
L’album è diviso in due parti, sul lato A troviamo canzoni tipicamente in stile Bütcher, mentre sul lato B c’è un concept di 25 minuti, di tre tracce, sicuramente più atipico. Il lato B può rappresentare il futuro del vostro sound o è solo un’espressione estemporanea?
Mai dire mai, scriviamo ciò che ci viene naturale… ma non penso che il lato B sia una direzione completamente nuova che seguiremo ora. C’è della musica fantastica lì dentro, se possiamo dircelo da soli. Ma non sono convinto che da ora in poi seguiremo solo quella strada.
Cosa c’è nel concept del lato B?
Nei circa 25 minuti portiamo l’ascoltatore in un mondo ispirato a Clark Ashton Smith. Noi stessi abbiamo aggiunto molto alla finzione, in una storia in cui un pater familias impazzisce, le sue azioni richiamano il regno del diavolo e allontanano un’intera città dal cristianesimo attraverso una serie di relazioni amorose, eresie, omicidi e, infine, l’invocazione di Satana. È anche abbastanza simile alle cose di King Diamond nell’impostazione, con diversi personaggi che parlano e scene descrittive dell’ambiente di cui cerchiamo di creare l’atmosfera. È qualcosa di piuttosto unico ed è stato molto impegnativo realizzarlo. Ma siamo orgogliosi di ciò che abbiamo ottenuto con questo. Il B-sdie presenta tre lunghe canzoni che musicalmente si reggono da sole, ma dove allo stesso tempo sentirai elementi a cui si fa riferimento nelle altre canzoni. Melodie e ritmi ritornano in modo sottile o sono la base per un altro riff in un’altra canzone.
Puoi spiegarmi il significato del titolo dell’album?
Dovresti leggerlo come “volare su Fowl of Tyrant Wing”. Ho derivato il termine liberamente da una poesia di Shakespeare, “The Phoenix and the Turtle”. All’epoca si usava il termine “fowl” per indicare le creature alate. Rappresenta la Fenice (Satana) che risorge dalle fiamme della pira delle streghe in fiamme, spiegando le ali. Nella storia si racconta che durante la liberazione della Fenice, una città devota si allontana dalla chiesa, e tutte queste persone “volano su fowl of tyrant wing”.
Quali canzoni di “On Fowl of Tyrant Wing” suonerete dal vivo?
Nei nostri spettacoli di lancio suoneremo tutti i pezzi forti del lato A. Non siamo ancora sicuri di come affronteremo il lato B. Poiché le canzoni sono molto lunghe, dovremo comunque fare delle scelte in futuro. Ma ogni canzone è qualcosa che vorremmo fare dal vivo… vedremo cosa decideremo.
I tuoi prossimi concerti?
Abbiamo grandi cose in arrivo in tutta Europa. Quest’anno abbiamo ancora Francia, Germania, Repubblica Ceca e Olanda. L’anno prossimo toccheremo i confini dell’Europa. Seguite i nostri social per leggere cosa abbiamo in serbo. Ma qui vorrei menzionare i nostri due spettacoli ufficiali di presentazione: il 22 novembre a Eindhoven e il 23 novembre a Parigi.

I do not hide that I was waiting for this full length with impatience, because I have been following the band with interest since their 2017 debut, “Bestial Fükkin’ Warmachine”. With real pleasure I could talk with R Hellshrieker about the new album “On Fowl of Tyrant Wing”, a release that contains quite a few novelties…
Hi guys, how does it feel to have a new full length to take around the world?
Hey, it feels good! It’s been 4 years, almost 5, since we released our previous album “666 Goats Carry My Chariot”. And that one went very well for us. It’s an honour to see songs such as “Iron Bitch” and “45 RPM Metal” doing so good in the scene. But we want to expand our live set, we want to play our new material – so we’re excited to put this new record out.
Are you aware that there are great expectations for your third album? Usually the third album is the one of consecration for a band, do you feel a bit under pressure?
Yeah, that’s the general rule isn’t it? We don’t really feel pressured though. If you like Bütcher, it’d be strange not liking this album – though it’s more refined and especially the B-side is an expansion of our sound. So we see it as an opportunity to present ourselves as a band that’s doing its thing. We hope it resonates with our fans, and maybe with new people as well.
Sure, when you put something out, you hope people will like it. But it doesn’t amount to more pressure of releasin a 3rd album. The pressure will probably go up when we’re playing this live though, haha.
You went from a three-member line-up to a five-member line-up, why?
We actually come from a 4 member line-up, we never were a 3 piece. KK Ripper was the only guitar player for a long time, but because he incorporates so much heavy metal leads, we really needed to up our live-game. Max Mayhem was our other guitarist for a long time, but the agendas of Evil Invaders and Bütcher aren’t combinable, too much stuff overlaps. So KV Bonekrusher took up the second axe and left he bass position, we welcomed R Voidsmasher on drums after LV Speedhämmer’s departure and AK Nosferatör permanently took on bass duties. Finally a solid 5-piece line-up!
Did the new members contribute to the songwriting and recording phase of the album?
No, the albums was written and recorded before they joined.
The album is divided into two parts, on side A we find songs typically in Bütcher style, while on side B there is a 25 minutes concept, of three tracks, certainly more atypical. Can side B represent the future of your sound or is it just an extemporaneous expression?
Never say never, and we write what comes natural to us … but I don’t think side B is like a whole new direction we’re going to follow now. There’s some amazing music on there, if we may say so ourselves. But i’s not set in stone that we only follow that road from now on.
What’s about the concept on side B?
In the roughly 25 minutes we take the listener to a world that’s inspired by Clark Ashton Smith. We added heavily to the fiction ourselves, in a story where we have a pater familias turn mad, his actions calling in the Devil’s reign, and turning a complete town away from devoted Christianity through a series of love affairs, heresy, murder and ultimately ending in the invoking of Satan. It’s also pretty King Diamond-like in setup, with different characters speaking and descriptive scenes of the environment where we try to set the mood. It’s something pretty unique, and it was super challenging to get it done. But we’re proud of what we achieved with this. The B-sdie features three long songs which musically stand alone, but where at the same time you will hear elements referenced in the other songs coming back. Melodies and rhythms return in a subtle fashion or are the basis for another riff in another song.
Can you explain to me the meaning of the album title?
You should read it as “to fly on Fowl of Tyrant Wing”. I derived the term loosely from a Shakespeare poem, “The Phoenix and the Turtle”. He used fowl back then as a term for winged creatures. It represents the Phoenix (Satan) rising from the flames of the burning witches’ pyre,
spreading his wings. In the story it goes that during the release of the Phoenix, a devoted town shies away from the church – and ths all the people “fly on fowl of tyrant wing”.
Which songs from “On Fowl of Tyrant Wing” will you perform live?
On our release shows we will perform alll bangers from side A. We’re not yet sure how we will approach the B-side. Because the songs are very long we will have to make choices in the future anyway. But every song is something we’d love to do live … we’ll see on what we decide.

We have great stuff coming up all across Europe. This year still we have France, Germany, Czech Republic and Holland. Next year we touch upon the outer reaches of Europe.
