Torben Enevoldsen ci ha parlato del nuovo album della fantastica, e direi sottovalutata, band danese Fate. Fondati dall’ex chitarrista dei Mercyful Fate Hank Shermann, i Fate hanno pubblicato album eccellenti, come il nuovo “Reconnect ‘N Ignite” (Frontiers Music). Probabilmente con una maggiore continuità nelle uscite, i danesi avrebbero potuto avere un fato diverso…

Ciao Torben, il 18 ottobre Frontiers Music pubblicherà il vostro nuovo album “Reconnect ‘N Ignite”, dopo tutti questi anni ti senti un po’ emozionato prima dell’uscita di un album o ci sei abituato?
Mi sento sempre emozionato prima di una nuova uscita, ma per me questa è la mia 25a uscita (senza contare le riedizioni, le compilation e le varie apparizioni come ospite), quindi l’eccitazione non è ovviamente così intensa come quella del primo album. Tuttavia, è sempre emozionante avere del nuovo materiale in uscita e condividere nuova musica con i fan. Non stanca mai.

Quali sono le tue aspettative per “Reconnect ‘N Ignite”?
Abbiamo lavorato tutti molto duramente su questo album e speriamo che venga accolto bene, ovviamente. Speriamo davvero che ai nostri vecchi fan piaccia e speriamo di riuscire ad attrarrne anche qualche nuovo.

Il titolo “Reconnect ‘N Ignite” ha a che fare con la lunga pausa che avete fatto tra “If Not for the Devil” nel 2013 e il nuovo album?
Beh, in realtà risale a molto prima… Il titolo dell’album è stato un suggerimento della moglie di Peer, Pia. Si riferisce all’ultima volta che Peer è stato nella band, ovvero nel 2006. Abbiamo pensato tutti che suonasse bene e che avesse senso, quindi abbiamo deciso di usarlo.

È stato difficile per voi trovare il feeling in studio o le canzoni sono uscite spontaneamente?
Peter e io scriviamo molto, quindi non è stato affatto un problema. Avevamo già molte idee scritte prima che Peer si unisse alla band, quindi avevamo un sacco di spunti tra cui scegliere. Una volta che Peer ha iniziato a lavorare sulle nostre idee, le canzoni hanno preso forma molto rapidamente.

Quale contributo hanno dato i nuovi arrivati ​​Søren Ryan e Patrik Törnblom in studio? Com’è stato lavorare di nuovo con Per?
Il contributo di Søren ha riguardato principalmente la batteria e i veri e propri ritmi. Peter e io usiamo la programmazione della batteria per le demo grezze e non dedichiamo molto tempo ai dettagli, quindi è qui che entrano in gioco le capacità e le preferenze di Søren. Il contributo di Patrik ha riguardato molto la scelta dei suoni, ma anche cosa suonare, ovviamente. Ho aiutato con le idee e insieme abbiamo elaborato accordi, frasi e così via. Sia Søren che Patrik hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro ed è stato molto facile lavorare con entrambi, quindi è stato molto utile per l’intero processo. Lavorare con Peer è stato un vero piacere. È stato super veloce a fornire la sua voce, quindi abbiamo dovuto davvero intensificare e lavorare più velocemente per stare al passo. Ha davvero fatto la differenza in queste canzoni e siamo molto felici di averlo di nuovo nella band.

A proposito di nuovi e vecchi membri, sei ancora in contatto con Hank Shermann?
Nessuno di noi lo è, no. In realtà non parlo con Hank da quasi un decennio. Una volta entrato nella band all’inizio del 2011, Hank è stato parecchio nei paraggi e ha persino scattato le prime foto promozionali che abbiamo fatto. Forse non lo sai, ma non è solo un grande chitarrista, è anche un fotografo fantastico.

Qual è la canzone meno Fate dell’album e quale è la più Fate?
Bella domanda. Penso che dipenda dal periodo storico della band con cui si fa il confronto. Al giorno d’oggi ci piace molto mescolare le carte, ma probabilmente direi che forse “Nowhere To Run” è la canzone meno Fate e che una canzone come “This Won’t Last” è la più Fate.

Credi nel destino o il duro lavoro paga sempre? Hai qualche rimpianto quando guardi indietro a tutta la tua carriera?
Il duro lavoro paga sempre, senza dubbio. Nessuno ti darà niente gratis, quindi devi impegnarti per ottenere ciò che vuoi. Voglio dire, se inizi avendo già rinunciato, o forse non dando il massimo in quello che fai, allora fallirai di sicuro. Cose del genere, tuttavia, credo siano destinate, quindi credo che tutto ciò che deve accadere accadrà più o meno indipendentemente da ciò che fai. Quindi sì, credo nel destino in una certa misura. Per quanto riguarda i rimpianti, certo, avendo lavorato nella musica per diversi decenni, è inevitabile che ci siano un certo numero di rimpianti. Occasioni perse, opportunità sprecate e accordi che non avresti dovuto fare, o forse avresti dovuto… Penso che questo valga per ogni musicista che abbia mai camminato sulla Terra…

Cosa vi aspetta ora? Ci sono date in programma?
Stiamo lavorando a nuova musica, ma non ci sono ancora spettacoli dal vivo in programma. Al momento siamo impegnati a cercare un buon agente di booking che possa aiutarci a fissare alcuni show e forse anche un tour. Speriamo sicuramente di metterci in viaggio per supportare questo album, in un modo o nell’altro.

Perhaps with more continuity in their releases, the Danes could have had a different fate…

Hi Torben, on October 18th Frontiers Music will release your new album “Reconnect ‘N Ignite”, after all these years do you feel a bit excited before the release of an album or are you used to it?
I always feel excited before a new release, but for me personally, this is my 25^th release (not counting re-issues, compilations and various guest appearances), so the excitement is of course not as intense as compared to having your very first album released. Still, it’s always exciting to have new material out and to share new music with the fans. That never gets old.

What are your expectations for “Reconnect ‘N Ignite”?
We have all worked very hard on this album and hope that it is going to be well received of course. We really hope that our old fans will like it, and hopefully we will be able to attract some new fans as well.

Does the title “Reconnect ‘N Ignite” have to do with the long break you took between “If Not for the Devil” in 2013 and the new album?
Well, it actually goes further back than that… The title of the album was a suggestion from Peer’s wife, Pia. It refers to when Peer was last in the band, which was back in 2006. We all thought it sounded cool and felt it made sense, so we decided to use it.

Was it difficult for you to find the feeling in the studio or did the songs come out spontaneously?
Peter and myself write a lot, so it was no problem at all. We already had a lot of ideas written before Peer joined the band, so we had plenty of ideas to choose from. Once Peer started working on our ideas, the songs got whipped into shape very quickly.

What contribution did newcomers Søren Ryan and Patrik Törnblom give in the studio? How was it to work with Per again?
Søren’s contribution was mainly about the drums and the actual drum beats. Peter and myself use drum programming for the rough demos and don’t spend that much time on specifics, so this is where Søren’s abilities and preferences come into play. Patrik’s contribution was very much about the choice of sounds, but also on what to play of course. I helped with ideas and together we came up with chords, phrases and so on. Both Søren and Patrik did great jobs and they were both very easy to work with, so that was very helpful for the entire process. Working with Peer was a real treat. He was super quick to deliver his vocals, so we really had to step up and work faster to keep up. He truly made a difference on these songs and we are very happy to have him back in the band.

Speaking of new and old members, are you still in touch with Hank Shermann?
None of us are, no. I haven’t spoken to Hank for the better part of a decade actually. Once I joined the band back in early 2011, Hank was around quite a bit and he even took the first promo shots we did. You may not know this, but he is not only a great guitar player, he is also a fantastic photographer.

Which is the least Fate song on the album and which is the most Fate?
Good question. I think it depends on which time period of the bands history you’re comparing to. These days we like to mix it up a lot, but I would probably say that maybe “Nowhere To Run” is the least Fate song and that a song like “This Won’t Last” is the most Fate.

Do you believe in fate or does hard work always pay off? Do you have any regrets when you look back at your entire career?
Hard work always pay off, no doubt. No one is going to hand you anything for free, so you have to work for whatever you want to achieve. I mean, if you start out having already given up, or perhaps not giving whatever you do your all, then you will fail for sure. Stuff like that however I believe is destined, so I do believe that whatever is meant to be, is going to happen pretty much no matter what you do. So yeah, I guess I do believe in fate to some degree. Regarding regrets, sure, having worked in music for several decades, there’s bound to be a certain degree of regrets. Chances passed, opportunities wasted, and deals you shouldn’t have made, or maybe should have… I think that this is true for every musician who has ever walked the Earth…

What’s next? Are there any dates planned?
We are working on new music, but there are no live shows planned just yet. We are currently busy trying to find a good solid booking agent who can help us book some shows, and perhaps maybe even a tour. We definitely hope to get on the road to support this album for sure, one way or another.
