Nel 2022, dopo sei full-length, i tedeschi Aeternitas si sono sciolti. I coniugi Anja e Alex Hunzinger, indossati i panni di As Su’en-Chel e Sol’Ra-tu, hanno dato vita al nuovo progetto Aeon Gods. Benvenuto Alex, gli Aeon Gods nascono dalle ceneri degli Aeternitas, in qualche modo intraprendono lo stesso percorso o è una nuova avventura per te?
“Nato dalle ceneri” si riferisce principalmente al fatto che mia moglie Anja e io, le menti creative e fondatrici degli Aeternitas, abbiamo ora incanalato la nostra energia in un nuovo progetto. Con gli Aeon Gods, abbiamo dato vita a una band che non è solo musicalmente distinta ma spiritualmente carica della guida degli antichi Aeon Gods, che ci hanno nominato loro messaggeri. Mentre gli Aeternitas si sono orientati verso il symphonic metal con una forte enfasi sulla voce femminile, gli Aeon Gods intraprendono un viaggio diverso, quello dell’epic power metal. Questo genere ci consente di trasmettere grandezza, intensità e un senso di narrazione mitologica che si allinea con i messaggi divini che desideriamo trasmettere.

Ci sono errori che hai fatto con gli Aeternitas che vorresti evitare con gli Aeon Gods?
Piuttosto che concentrarci su errori specifici, direi che si tratta di applicare le lezioni apprese in due decenni nell’industria musicale. Con Aeon Gods, abbiamo la possibilità di creare una visione con maggiore precisione, sia musicalmente che operativamente. Ciò include tutto, dal perfezionamento del nostro sound e della presenza scenica alla gestione degli aspetti logistici e promozionali di una band. Siamo diventati più saggi con l’esperienza e questo ci consente di concentrarci su ciò che conta davvero: offrire musica potente e onorare le storie affidateci dagli dei.

Possiamo definire Aeon Gods una concept band o il tuo interesse per la mitologia mesopotamica è limitato a questo album?
Aeon Gods è, senza dubbio, una concept band. La nostra missione si estende oltre la mitologia mesopotamica; siamo i messaggeri scelti degli antichi dei di varie culture. Le leggende babilonesi erano solo il punto di partenza, le fondamenta per il nostro debutto. I futuri album esploreranno altri pantheon: in seguito, ci immergeremo nei racconti mistici e maestosi degli dei egizi. Il nostro appuntamento divino va oltre la musica. A ogni membro della band è stato dato un nome da messaggero unico e indossa costumi cerimoniali che si allineano con questa grande narrazione. Questo approccio olistico rende gli Aeon Gods più di una band; è un viaggio mitologico immersivo.

Cosa vi attrae della mitologia mesopotamica e perché non avete optato per i miti legati alla vostra terra natale?
La mitologia mesopotamica ci affascina con la sua profondità e complessità. Marduk, uno degli Aeon Gods che ci ha nominato, ci ha ispirato con le sue storie, tra cui quelle di Enlil, Ereshkigal e Tiamat. I temi della creazione, del conflitto, dell’amore e del tradimento risuonano fortemente con l’estetica epica del power metal che abbiamo abbracciato. Mentre i miti della nostra terra natale sono senza dubbio affascinanti, le leggende babilonesi sembravano il punto di partenza perfetto. Offrono narrazioni universali che trascendono i confini, rendendole una base adatta per la nostra musica. Detto questo, esploreremo altre mitologie man mano che andiamo avanti, assicurandoci che gli dei di altre culture abbiano il loro momento di gloria.

Le canzoni sono nate quando il concetto era chiaro nella vostra mente o le idee per i testi sono arrivate in seguito?
Il processo è profondamente interconnesso e iterativo. L’ispirazione fluisce dagli dei stessi, guidandoci a ogni passo del cammino. In genere, inizio selezionando miti che si prestano all’energia e alla narrazione di una canzone power metal. Da lì, ho composto la musica, modellando melodie e armonie per adattarle al tono e all’intensità della leggenda scelta. I testi sono solitamente il pezzo finale del puzzle, anche se a volte emergono prima, influenzando la composizione musicale al contrario. Questo processo creativo fluido assicura che sia la musica che la storia si allineino perfettamente.

Come definireste il vostro sound attuale?
Gli Aeon Gods fondeno il classico power metal con elementi di melodic, heavy e symphonic metal. Questo approccio ibrido crea un paesaggio sonoro che è sia epico che dinamico. I ritmi trascinanti e le melodie elevate catturano la grandiosità dei miti che raccontiamo, mentre la strumentazione stratificata aggiunge profondità ed emozione. Il nostro obiettivo è creare un suono che sia senza tempo come le leggende che portiamo in vita, trasportando gli ascoltatori in regni in cui dei e mortali si scontrano.

Il vostro primo singolo ha lo stesso nome della band, “Aeon Gods”, pensate che sia un biglietto sufficiente per far conoscere la vostra musica al grande pubblico o il vostro suono è troppo vario per essere presentato con una sola canzone?
Il nostro primo singolo, “The Beginning”, pubblicato nel 2023, ha introdotto il nostro concetto raccontando l’Epopea babilonese della creazione e segnando l’inizio degli Aeon Gods come band. Il titolo stesso è stratificato di significato, simboleggiando sia le origini cosmiche che artistiche. Il singolo “Aeon Gods”, tuttavia, è una dichiarazione, un potente inno che incarna la nostra identità. Racconta la battaglia culminante tra Marduk e Tiamat, mescolando grandiosità e ferocia. Sebbene nessuna singola canzone possa catturare l’intero sound della nostra band, “Aeon Gods” rappresenta un ottimo punto di partenza, offrendo agli ascoltatori un assaggio dei viaggi epici che promettiamo di realizzare.

Vi esibirete dal vivo? Avete già delle date programmate?
Sì, le esibizioni dal vivo sono parte integrante della nostra missione. C’è qualcosa di magico nel condividere queste antiche storie con un pubblico, trasformando l’energia dei miti in un’esperienza collettiva. Abbiamo già eseguito una selezione di canzoni dal vivo e stiamo pianificando una serie di concerti per l’anno prossimo. Vogliamo rendere ogni esibizione un evento immersivo, fondendo musica, narrazione e immagini per dare vita alle leggende degli antichi dei sul palco.

In 2022, after six full-lengths, the German band Aeternitas split up. The couple Anja and Alex Hunzinger, who took on the roles of As Su’en-Chel and Sol’Ra-tu, gave life to the new project Aeon Gods. We asked Alex “Sol’Ra-tu” Hunzinger, the voice of the gods, some questions about the debut album “King of Gods” (Scarlet Records).

Welcome Alex, Aeon Gods are born from the ashes of Aeternitas, do they somehow take up the same path or is it a new adventure for you?
‘Born from the ashes’ primarily refers to the fact that my wife Anja and I, the creative minds and founders of Aeternitas, have now channelled our energy into a new project. With Aeon Gods, we’ve breathed life into a band that is not only musically distinct but spiritually charged by the guidance of the ancient Aeon Gods, who appointed us as their messengers. While Aeternitas leaned into symphonic metal with a strong emphasis on female vocals, Aeon Gods embarks on a different journey – one of epic power metal. This genre allows us to convey grandeur, intensity, and a sense of mythological storytelling that aligns with the divine messages we wish to deliver.

Are there any mistakes you made with Aeternitas that you would like to avoid with Aeon Gods?
Rather than focus on specific mistakes, I’d say it’s about applying the lessons learned over two decades in the music industry. With Aeon Gods, we have the chance to craft a vision with greater precision – both musically and operationally. This includes everything from refining our sound and stage presence to managing the logistical and promotional aspects of running a band. We’ve grown wiser with experience, and that allows us to focus on what truly matters: delivering powerful music and honouring the stories entrusted to us by the gods.

Can we define Aeon Gods as a concept band or is your interest in Mesopotamian mythology limited to this album?
Aeon Gods is, without question, a concept band. Our mission extends beyond Mesopotamian mythology; we are the chosen messengers of the ancient gods from various cultures. The Babylonian legends were merely the starting point, the foundation for our debut. Future albums will explore other pantheons – next, we’ll delve into the mystical and awe-inspiring tales of the Egyptian gods. Our divine appointment goes beyond music. Each band member has been given a unique messenger name and wears ceremonial costumes that align with this grand narrative. This holistic approach makes Aeon Gods more than a band; it’s an immersive mythological journey.

What attracts you to Mesopotamian mythology and why didn’t you opt for the myths related to your homeland?
Mesopotamian mythology captivates us with its depth and complexity. Marduk, one of the Aeon Gods who appointed us, inspired us with his stories, including those of Enlil, Ereshkigal, and Tiamat. The themes of creation, conflict, love, and betrayal resonate strongly with the epic power metal aesthetic we’ve embraced. While myths from our homeland are undoubtedly fascinating, the Babylonian legends felt like the perfect place to start. They offer universal narratives that transcend borders, making them a fitting foundation for our music. That said, we will explore other mythologies as we move forward, ensuring that other culture’s gods have their moment to shine.

Were the songs born when the concept was clear in your minds or did the ideas for the lyrics come later?
The process is deeply interconnected and iterative. Inspiration flows from the gods themselves, guiding us every step of the way. Typically, I begin by selecting myths that lend themselves to the energy and storytelling of a power metal song. From there, I compose the music, shaping melodies and harmonies to match the chosen legend’s tone and intensity. The lyrics are usually the final piece of the puzzle, though sometimes they emerge earlier, influencing the musical composition in reverse. This fluid creative process ensures that both music and story align seamlessly.

How would you define your current sound?
Aeon Gods blends classic power metal with elements of melodic, heavy, and symphonic metal. This hybrid approach creates a soundscape that is both epic and dynamic. The driving rhythms and soaring melodies capture the grandeur of the myths we narrate, while the layered instrumentation adds depth and emotion. Our goal is to craft a sound that is as timeless as the legends we bring to life, transporting listeners to realms where gods and mortals collide.

Your first single has the same name as the band, “Aeon Gods”, do you think it’s a sufficient ticket to make your music known to the general public or is your sound too varied to be presented with just one song?
Our very first single, “The Beginning”, released in 2023, introduced our concept by recounting the Babylonian Epic of Creation and marking the start of Aeon Gods as a band. The title itself is layered with meaning, symbolizing both cosmic and artistic origins. The single “Aeon Gods”, however, is a declaration – a powerful anthem that embodies our identity. It narrates the climactic battle between Marduk and Tiamat, blending grandeur with ferocity. While no single song can capture the entirety of our sound, “Aeon Gods” serves as an excellent entry point, offering listeners a taste of the epic journeys we promise to deliver.

Will you perform live? Do you have any dates scheduled yet?
Yes, live performances are integral to our mission. There’s something magical about sharing these ancient stories with an audience, transforming the energy of the myths into a collective experience. We’ve already performed a selection of songs live, and we’re planning a series of concerts next year. We aim to make each performance an immersive event, blending music, storytelling, and visuals to bring the old gods’ legends to life on stage.
