La cult death metal band danese Maceration è tornata dopo un trentennale silenzio nel 2022 con l’album “It Never Ends…”. Oggi il gruppo rinconferma il ritorno alla piena attività con il nuovo full length “Serpent Devourment” (Emanzipation Productions), che vede ormai saldamente dietro al microfono Jan Bergmann Jepsen, al posto di Dan Swanö.
Benvenuto Jakob (Schultz), il vostro 2025 inizierà con il nuovo album “Serpent Devourment”, solo circa dieci anni fa, ti saresti mai aspettato uno scenario del genere?
Beh, nel 2021 non avrei mai pensato che avremmo riportato in vita i Maceration, ma quando Michael di Emanzipation ci ha detto che avrebbe volentieri pubblicato il nostro come-back album 30 anni dopo il nostro debutto, ci siamo semplicemente fatti avanti e l’abbiamo fatto. È davvero fantastico essere tornati e ora abbiamo due fantastici album usciti dal 2022.
Siete tra i pionieri del death metal scandinavo, nel 1992 avete pubblicato un album di culto “A Serenade of Agony”, ma il successo non è arrivato? Cosa è andato storto?
La band era una specie di progetto parallelo degli Invocator. Quello che è successo è che non abbiamo fatto niente di nuovo e quando abbiamo provato a tenerla in piedi dopo “A Serenade…” con nuovi membri e live, è crollata all’inizio del 1993 e poi è andata in pausa poiché non c’era più niente da fare.
È stato più complicato scrivere l’album di ritorno “It Never Ends…” (2022) o la riconferma, “Serpent Devourment”?
Immagino che con “It Never Ends…” abbiamo pensato di più a come avrebbe dovuto suonare e ad avere ancora riferimenti all’album di debutto. Con “Serpent Devourment” ci siamo sentiti più liberi di fare esattamente ciò che volevamo e usare le idee che ci piacevano, quindi il nuovo album è più evoluto e la scrittura delle canzoni è semplicemente migliore, penso. Tuttavia, lo stile è ovviamente death metal e come lo stile di “It Never Ends..”
Quanto è importante avere un’etichetta alle spalle, “Emanzipation Productions”, che crede molto in voi?
È facile perché hanno una buona struttura e la gestiscono come un’etichetta professionale che fa tutto ciò che noi faremmo in molto più tempo e non avremmo comunque lo stesso successo. È bello perché possiamo concentrarci sulla musica.
Perché questa volta Dan Swanö non ha cantato nell’album, ma si è limitato a produrre il disco?
Dan Swano ha fatto la session vocal per il nostro debutto nel 1992. Quando ci siamo riformati nel 2021 gli abbiamo chiesto se avrebbe fatto lo stesso di nuovo e anche mixato l’album. Abbiamo fatto le registrazioni senza avere una formazione da portare dal vivo. Ha accettato di ringhiare di nuovo e ha registrato. Non ha mai voluto suonare dal vivo. Quando le canzoni sono state registrate e Dan ci ha lavorato in studio, sapevamo di avere in programma dei concerti, quindi abbiamo chiesto a Jan Bergmann se si sarebbe unito a noi e avrebbe fatto il cantante dal vivo. Poi ha anche fatto alcuni duetti su “It Never Ends” con Swano in un paio di canzoni. Quando avremmo dovuto fare “Serpent Deveourment”, avevamo suonato dal vivo con Jan così tanto e provato che è ormai un membro permanente, quindi è stato naturale che registrasse tutte le voci sul nuovo album in uscita. È stata la scelta giusta. Dan Swano ha comunque mixato e prodotto perché conosce il nostro sound e ci ha anche detto che non cambierà mai più, quindi ora è naturale che continui così.
Che ruolo ha avuto Jan Bergmann Jepsen nella scrittura delle canzoni?
Jan ha organizzato i testi delle canzoni e ovviamente ha dato qualche suggerimento e ha apportato delle modifiche ad alcune liriche.
Qual è la formazione attuale della band?
Jakob Schultz (chitarra, ex Invocator), Jan Bergmann Jepsen (voce, ex Cor Vacante), Rune Koldby (basso, ex Spectral Mortuary, ExMortem, Encyrcle), Robert Tengs (chitarra), Nicolai Kaltoft (batteria, ex Corpus Mortale).
Di cosa parlano i testi delle canzoni?
I testi riguardano molti argomenti, ma tendiamo a concentrarci sulla mente umana, l’oscurità e su come puoi approfondirla come essere umano e su cosa esplori nella tua mente e sulla catarsi del tuo io interiore. Abbiamo anche influenze da argomenti più horror di tipo Cthulu.

Cult Danish death metal band Maceration returned after a thirty-year silence in 2022 with the album “It Never Ends…”. Today the band confirms their return to full activity with the new full length “Serpent Devourment” (Emanzipation Productions), which now sees Jan Bergmann Jepsen firmly behind the microphone, replacing Dan Swanö.
Welcome Jakob (Schultz), your 2025 will start with the new album “Serpent Devourment”, only about ten years ago, would you have ever expected such a scenario?
Well back in 2021 I would not have thought we would bring back Maceration but when Michael from Emanzipation told us he would release a comeback album 30 years after the debut we just went ahead and did it. It is really great to be back and we have now two awesome albums out since 2022.
You are among the pioneers of Scandinavian death metal, in 1992 you released a cult album “A Serenade of Agony”, but success did not come? What went wrong?
The band was kind of a side project to Invocator. What happened is that the band didn’t do anything new and when we tried keeping the band up n running after “A Serenade..” with new members and shows, it fell to the ground in early 1993 and then the band just went into hiatus and there was nothing more to do.
Was it more complicated to write the comeback album “It Never Ends…” (2022) or the reconfirmation, “Serpent Devourment”?
I guess with “It Never Ends…” we thought more about how it should sound and still have references to the debut album. With “Serpent Devourment” we felt more free to do exactly what we wanted and use the ideas we like so therefore the new album is more evolved and the song writing just better I think. Still the style is off course death metal and like the style on “It Never Ends..”
How important is it to have a label behind you, “Emanzipation Productions”, that believes in you a lot?
It’s easy because they have the setup and run it as a professional label doing everything that we would have to use so much time doing and then still wouldn’t have the same success with. Its cool because we can focus on the music.
Why this time Dan Swanö did not sing on the album, but limited himself to producing the record?
Dan Swano did the session vocals on our debut in 1992. When we reformed in 2021 we asked if he would do the same again and also mix the album. We did the recordings without having the live line-up in place. He agreed to growl again and he recorded. He never wanted to play live. When the songs was recorded and Dan worked on them in the studio we knew we had gigs planned, so we asked Jan Bergmann if he would join and be the live singer. Then he also did some duets on the “It Never Ends” with Swano in a couple of songs. When we should do “Serpent Deveourment” we had been playing live with Jan so much and rehearsed that he is a permanent member, so it was naturally that he would record all vocals on the new upcoming album. It was the right choice. Dan Swano still mixed and produced because he know our sound – and he also told us he will never growl again, so now its just natural to keep it this way.
What role did Jan Bergmann Jepsen have in the songwriting?
Jan have been organizing the lyrics to songs and off course had some input and changes to some of the lyrics.

What are the lyrics of the songs about?
Lyrics is about a lot of topics but we tend to circle around the human mind, the darkness and how you can get deep down into it as a human and what you explore in your mind and the catharsis of your inner self. We also have influences from the more horror kind cthulu type topics.
