Gli Airforce, leggendaria band britannica di heavy metal, sono tornati con “Acts of Madness”, il loro ultimo album pubblicato tramite RPM/ROAR. Nato in un periodo difficile, il disco rende omaggio al loro compianto compagno di band Pete Franklin, abbracciando al contempo un nuovo approccio produttivo grazie alla collaborazione con lo storico produttore Jezz Coad. In questa intervista, il bassista Tony Hatton racconta la realizzazione di “Acts of Madness”, il percorso creativo della band e i progetti futuri degli Airforce.

Benvenuto su Il Raglio del Mulo, Tony. “Acts of Madness” è stato creato in un periodo difficile. In che modo la pandemia e la perdita di Pete Franklin hanno influenzato il processo di scrittura e registrazione?
La pandemia ha sicuramente sconvolto noi così come molti altri. La perdita del nostro amico Pete è stata devastante.

Avete dedicato l’album a Pete. In che modo la sua influenza ha plasmato “Acts of Madness” e cosa pensi che avrebbe detto del risultato finale?
Crediamo che Pete sarebbe stato molto felice di come è venuto “Acts of Madness”. C’è molto della sua influenza nell’album, ma con un grande contributo da parte del nostro nuovo produttore, Jezz Coad.

Il vostro storico collaboratore Jezz Coad è intervenuto per aiutare a completare l’album. Com’è stato lavorare di nuovo con lui dopo tanti anni?
Non abbiamo pensato subito a Jezz, dato che non eravamo più in contatto con lui dai tempi delle registrazioni negli anni ’80. Abbiamo riflettuto a lungo su chi potesse produrre il nostro nuovo album. Poi, un giorno, Chop ha pensato a Jezz. Jezz nel frattempo era diventato un produttore di successo, lavorando con Airforce negli anni ’80 e poi con band come i Simple Minds. Chop è riuscito a rintracciarlo e a chiamarlo. Con nostra grande gioia, Jezz ha accettato con entusiasmo di lavorare di nuovo con gli Airforce. Ha persino recuperato parte del materiale registrato dall’hard disk di Pete. È stato un piacere lavorare di nuovo con Jezz dopo tanti anni. La perdita di un grande amico ha portato alla riunione con un altro vecchio amico.

Avete dovuto ricostruire gran parte dell’album dopo aver perso le registrazioni originali. In che modo questo ha influenzato il sound finale del disco?
La collaborazione tra Airforce e Jezz Coad è stata fantastica. Grazie alla combinazione delle nostre competenze e all’influenza di Pete, il processo di registrazione ha avuto inizio. Abbiamo lavorato tutti molto bene insieme e dato vita all’album “Acts of Madness”, mantenendo il classico sound di Airforce con una produzione più moderna.

Con quasi un’ora di musica e 11 tracce, quale canzone rappresenta al meglio l’essenza di questo album e perché?
È impossibile rispondere. Tutte le 11 tracce rappresentano l’essenza di “Acts of Madness” a modo loro, e ognuno che le ascolta può avere una traccia preferita diversa, o una rotazione di tracce preferite.

La scaletta del concerto al Movistar Arena di Bogotá includeva nuovo materiale. Come ha reagito il pubblico ai brani inediti rispetto ai vostri classici?
Le nuove canzoni sembrano essere state accolte molto bene dal nostro pubblico e abbiamo ricevuto molti commenti positivi. Tuttavia, dato che “Acts of Madness” è stato appena pubblicato, ci vorrà un po’ di tempo perché i fan si abituino ai nuovi brani.

Basandoti sulla tua esperienza dal vivo, qual è lo stato attuale dell’heavy metal classico? Lo vedi come un genere per nostalgici o noti una nuova ondata di giovani fan?
Vedo un mix di entrambe le cose: ci sono molti fan di vecchia data, ma sempre più giovani stanno scoprendo l’heavy metal classico. La tipologia di fan può variare da paese a paese. Sarebbe fantastico vedere una vera e propria rinascita della scena heavy metal classica, e chissà cosa potrebbe accadere in futuro.

L’album include una cover di “Strange World” degli Iron Maiden. Cosa vi ha ispirato a scegliere questo brano e come l’avete reinterpretato?
Ci veniva continuamente chiesto se Airforce avrebbero mai realizzato una cover degli Iron Maiden. Anche se siamo fan dei Maiden e amici di Steve Harris, noi – e Doug in particolare – non avevamo intenzione di farlo solo per il gusto di farlo. Doug aveva già vissuto quell’esperienza e ora il focus è sugli Airforce. Ma ho pensato che se avessimo potuto dare una nuova interpretazione a un brano dei Maiden, trasformandolo in una canzone anche degli Airforce, allora poteva funzionare. Ho avuto l’intuizione che “Strange World” potesse adattarsi bene a noi. Ha richiesto un nuovo arrangiamento per renderla nostra, e visto che Doug aveva suonato nella versione originale delle “Soundhouse Tapes”, aveva anche una sorta di legame con il pezzo. L’abbiamo provata e ora potete ascoltare il risultato. Dave Sullivan, un ex membro dei Maiden, ha suonato anche nella nostra versione di “Strange World”.

Guardando al futuro, quali sono i prossimi passi per gli Airforce? Avete in programma un tour o nuovi progetti dopo l’uscita di “Acts of Madness”?
Completare e pubblicare “Acts of Madness”, insieme ai video associati, è stata la nostra priorità per un bel po’ di tempo. Abbiamo avuto vari ritardi, come detto in precedenza, e l’ultimo, di sei mesi, è stato causato dalla fusione della nostra etichetta discografica ROAR con RPM per formare la nuova RPM/ROAR. Ma alla fine ci siamo riusciti. Ora stiamo lavorando sul nuovo materiale per il prossimo album, che speriamo di pubblicare entro un paio d’anni. Suoneremo al festival “Harder Than Rock” in Croazia l’8 marzo 2025 e stiamo attualmente organizzando un tour per la fine di quest’anno. Abbiamo ricevuto molte proposte e suggerimenti per tour nel Regno Unito, in Europa continentale, Sud America e persino Australia, ma dobbiamo ancora definire un calendario reale. Airforce, the legendary British heavy metal band, is back with “Acts of Madness”, their latest album released via RPM/ROAR. Created during challenging times, the record pays tribute to their late bandmate Pete Franklin while embracing a fresh production approach with longtime collaborator Jezz Coad. In this interview, bassist Tony Hatton talks about the making of “Acts of Madness”, the band’s creative journey, and what the future holds for Airforce.

Welcome to Il Raglio del Mulo, Tony. “Acts of Madness” was created during challenging times. How did the pandemic and the loss of Pete Franklin impact the writing and recording process?The pandemic itself certainly disrupted us as well as many others. The loss of our mate Pete was devastating.

You’ve dedicated the album to Pete. How did his influence shape “Acts of Madness”, and what do you think he would have thought of the final result?
We believe Pete would have been very happy with how the “Acts of Madness” album turned out. A lot of Pete’s influence is in there, but now with a lot of new input from our new producer, Jezz Coad.

Longtime collaborator Jezz Coad stepped in to help complete the album. What was it like working with him again after all these years?
We didn’t think of Jezz straight away as we hadn’t really been in proper contact with him since our recording sessions back in the 1980s. We looked and thought about who we could use to produce our next album for quite some time. And then one day, Jezz came into Chop’s mind. Jezz had become a very successful producer since his early career working with Airforce in the 1980s and had since worked with bands like Simple Minds among others. Chop managed to track him down and called him. To our delight, Jezz said he would love to work with Airforce again. He even managed to recover some of the recorded material from Pete’s hard drive to begin with. It was a delight working with Jezz again after all these years. The loss of one good friend led to the reuniting with another old friend.

You had to rebuild much of the album after losing the original recordings. How did this influence the final sound of the record?
The collaboration between Airforce and Jezz Coad was great. With both parties’ combined expertise and Pete’s influence, the recording process began. We all worked very well together and brought the “Acts of Madness” album to fruition—maintaining the traditional Airforce sound with a more modern production.

With nearly an hour of music and 11 tracks, which song do you feel best represents the essence of this album, and why?
That’s an impossible question to answer. All 11 tracks represent the essence of “Acts of Madness” in their own way, and everyone who has listened can have a different favorite track—or a rotation of favorite tracks.

The setlist at the Movistar Arena in Bogotá included new material. How has the audience responded to the fresh songs compared to your classic hits?
The new songs seem to be going down very well with our audience, and we have received many positive comments. However, as the “Acts of Madness” album has only just been released, people will take a little time to get to know the newer songs.

Based on your live experience, what is the current state of classic heavy metal? Do you see it as a genre mainly for nostalgic older fans, or do you notice a new wave of younger followers embracing it?
I see a mixture—there are a lot of older fans, but there are also more and more younger fans discovering classic heavy metal. The fan demographic can vary from country to country. It would be wonderful to see a full-scale resurgence of the classic heavy metal scene, and who knows what may happen in the future.

The album includes a cover of Iron Maiden’s “Strange World”. What inspired you to choose this particular track, and how did you approach making it your own?
We were constantly being asked if Airforce would cover an Iron Maiden song. Although we are Maiden fans and friends with Steve H, we—and Doug in particular—had no intention of covering a Maiden song just for the sake of it. Doug had been there and done that. Now, Airforce was the main focus. But I thought that if we could do a different take on a Maiden track, making it an Airforce track too, then maybe it would work. I had an inkling that “Strange World” was a Maiden song that could work as a cover for Airforce. It required a different arrangement to make it our own, and as Doug played on the original “Soundhouse Tapes” recording, he had some ownership. We tried it, and you can hear the results. Dave Sullivan, an early Maiden member, also played on our Airforce version.

Looking ahead, what’s next for Airforce? Do you have any plans for a tour or additional projects following the release of “Acts of Madness”?
Getting the “Acts of Madness” album completed and released, along with the associated videos, has been our main focus for quite some time. We had a series of delays to the album release, as discussed earlier—the last six-month delay being due to the merger of our record label ROAR with RPM to form the new label, RPM/ROAR. But we got there in the end. Airforce is now working on new material for the next album, which we hope will be out within the next couple of years. We will be playing at the “Harder Than Rock” festival in Croatia on March 8th, 2025, and are now in the process of putting together a touring schedule for later this year. There have been many tour offers and suggestions, including the UK, mainland Europe, South America, and even Australia, but we have yet to confirm a practical schedule.
