Alla voce troviamo ancora Rob Majd, affiancato ora da Fredrik Vahlgren, che ha portato nuova linfa alla band. Il disco unisce AOR classico e influenze moderne, promettendo una delle uscite più convincenti della loro carriera.
Benvenuto Rob (Majd, basso, backing vocals), “Chasing Danger” segna il vostro ritorno con una nuova formazione. In che modo l’ingresso di Fredrik Vahlgren ha influenzato il suono e il processo creativo della band?
La sua energia ci ha contagiato e il suo talento ha aperto nuove porte a livello musicale. È stato un’ottima aggiunta!
Avete definito questo album come il vostro migliore di sempre. Cosa ha reso diverso il processo di registrazione rispetto ai dischi precedenti?
La differenza più evidente è stata l’uscita di Chris dalla band. Era una parte fondamentale nella scrittura dei brani. Fare un album senza di lui è stata una nuova sfida. Inoltre, abbiamo deciso di prenderci tutto il tempo necessario per renderlo eccezionale. Niente concerti, nessuna scadenza, nessun compromesso. È stato un bel cambiamento!
L’album fonde l’AOR classico con un tocco moderno. Quali sono state le principali influenze nella creazione di “Chasing Danger”?
Abbiamo influenze molto diverse tra noi. Ovviamente ci ispiriamo anche a band con cui abbiamo lavorato come H.E.A.T e The Night Flight Orchestra. C’è così tanta musica fantastica in giro! A volte persino i nostri dischi precedenti possono ispirarci.
“AI Lover” si distingue come un inno AOR moderno. Cosa ha ispirato il tema e il testo del brano? E qual è la vostra opinione sull’intelligenza artificiale e la sua crescente influenza sulla musica e sulla società?
Fredrik ha scritto il testo. Non so se si sia innamorato di un robot o se sia una sorta di commento sociale… ma è divertente e si adatta bene all’energia del pezzo. Per quanto riguarda l’A.I.… wow, che ne penso? Non ne sono sicuro. Probabilmente può essere sia un grande strumento che qualcosa di pericoloso se usato male. Sono ottimista, quindi spero venga usata solo per il bene.
“Piece of Paradise” è stata aggiunta all’ultimo momento. Cosa vi ha fatto capire che “Chasing Danger” aveva bisogno di una ballad?
Ascoltando ciò che avevamo registrato… suonava tutto bene ma la dinamica era troppo uniforme. Anche se tutti i brani sono ottimi, si può rischiare di annoiarsi se hanno tutti la stessa energia. Sentivamo che serviva una ballad.
Lavorare con ospiti come John Lönnmyr (“The Night Flight Orchestra”) ha aggiunto profondità alla musica. Come sono nate queste collaborazioni?
Ho lavorato con John nel mio progetto solista Nighthawk. Abbiamo fatto due album, e il secondo uscirà ad agosto. Oscar Bromwall, che ci ha aiutato con le chitarre, ha suonato con noi anni fa e mi ha già supportato in altri album che ho prodotto. Entrambi offrono sempre performance eccezionali!
Il 2024 è stato il primo anno nei vostri 15 anni di carriera senza concerti. Come ha influito questo sul risultato finale dell’album?
Ha tolto un po’ di stress, non avendo troppe cose da gestire insieme. D’altra parte, io ero comunque in tour con la mia altra band Metalite e Fredrik faceva concerti, quindi suonavamo comunque. Questa pausa però ci ha resi ancora più entusiasti di tornare sul palco come Captain Black Beard!
Siete noti per le vostre performance energiche. Possiamo aspettarci un tour a supporto di “Chasing Danger”? Ci sono piani speciali per i live?
Sì, cercheremo sicuramente di portare lo show in giro! Cerchiamo sempre di renderlo speciale in tutti i modi possibili. Ci saranno sicuramente molte canzoni nuove in scaletta.
L’album uscirà anche in vinile trasparente blu in edizione limitata. Quanto conta per voi il formato fisico nell’era digitale?
Probabilmente l’etichetta potrebbe rispondere meglio, ma per me personalmente non c’è niente di meglio che ascoltare nuova musica su vinile. Lo adoro! Prendetelo!

Lead vocals are still handled by Rob Majd, now joined by Fredrik Vahlgren, who has brought new energy to the band. The record blends classic AOR with modern influences, promising one of the strongest releases of their career.
Welcome Rob (Majd: bass, backing vocals), “Chasing Danger” marks your return with a fresh lineup. How did Fredrik Vahlgren’s addition influence the band’s sound and creative process?
His energy really rubbed off on us, and his talent opened new doors musically. He’s been a great addition!
You’ve described this album as your strongest yet. What made the recording process different compared to your previous releases?
The most obvious difference was that Chris left the band. He was a key part of our songwriting. Making an album without him was a new challenge. On top of that, we decided to take all the time we needed to make it great—no shows, no deadlines, no compromises. It was a nice change!
The album blends classic AOR with a modern touch. What were your main influences while crafting “Chasing Danger”?
We all have very different influences. Of course, we’re also inspired by bands we’ve worked with like H.E.A.T and The Night Flight Orchestra. There’s so much great music out there! Sometimes even our own previous records can inspire us.
“AI Lover” stands out as a modern AOR anthem. What inspired the song’s theme and lyrics? Also, what are your thoughts on artificial intelligence and its growing influence on music and society?
Fredrik wrote the lyrics for that one. I’m not sure if he fell in love with a robot or if it’s some sort of social commentary… but it’s fun and fits the song’s energy. As for A.I.… wow, what do I think? I’m not really sure. It can probably be a great tool or something dangerous if misused. I’m an optimist, so I hope it’ll only be used for good.
“Piece of Paradise” was a late addition to the album. What made you realize “Chasing Danger” needed a big ballad?
Listening back to what we had recorded… it all sounded good, but the dynamics were maybe too uniform. Even if all the songs are great, you can get tired of an album if they all have the same energy. We felt it needed a ballad.
Working with guest musicians like John Lönnmyr (“The Night Flight Orchestra”) added extra depth to the music. How did these collaborations come about?
I worked with John on my solo project Nighthawk. We’ve done two albums, and the second one will be released in August. Oscar Bromwall, who helped us with guitar parts, played a show with us years ago and has helped me on other albums I’ve produced. Both guys always deliver amazing performances!
2024 was the first year in your 15-year history without live shows. How did focusing solely on the album impact the final result?
It took away some of the stress from juggling too many things. On the other hand, I was still touring with my other band Metalite and Fredrik was doing shows too, so we still performed live—just with other projects. The break made us even more excited to get back on stage as Captain Black Beard!
You’re known for high-energy performances. Can we expect a tour to support “Chasing Danger”? Any special plans for the live show?
Yes, we’re definitely going to try and take the show on the road! We always do what we can to make it special. There will definitely be lots of new songs in the setlist.
The album is releasing on limited edition transparent blue vinyl. How important is the physical format for you in today’s digital age?
The label could probably answer that better than me, but personally, there’s nothing like listening to new music on vinyl. I love it! Go get it!
