I Soen pubblicheranno il loro quinto album, “Imperial”, tramite Silver Lining Music il 29 gennaio 2021. Abbiamo parlato con Cody Ford di questa nuova uscita, la più feroce e dinamica del viaggio intrapreso dai Soen.

Cody, grazie per aver accettato questa intervista. State per pubblicare “Imperial” durante l’emergenza Covid 19, come ti senti riguardo all’imminente rilascio?
Direi bene! È ovviamente un peccato che non potremmo essere in grado di andare subito in tour come si fa di solito dopo aver pubblicato un album. Ma penso che più che mai le persone abbiano davvero bisogno della musica per superare le difficoltà che il Covid19 ha causato. Siamo entusiasti di fornirne un po’!

Quale pensi che sarà la cosa più sorprendente di “Imperial” per i vostri fan?
Penso a quanto sarà diverso questo album rispetto agli altri. Ha sicuramente il suo carattere. È un disco molto potente e antemico, penso che la gente lo apprezzerà rapidamente.

“Imperial” coinvolge immediatamente l’ascoltatore, cosa è cambiato? Per caso il vostro processo di scrittura delle canzoni?
Il processo di scrittura delle canzoni non è cambiato molto. Penso che l’aspetto coinvolgente derivi da quanto la musica sia riconoscibile per tanti. Penso che molte persone abbiano visto il mondo andare a puttane, la gente continua a lottare e le ingiustizie vengono spazzate sotto il tappeto. Le persone sono stanche di questo. Le nuove canzoni vogliono creare un legame con queste persone, per farle sentire come se non fossero sole.

“Imperial” è stato mixato e masterizzato da Kane Churko, che ha collaborato con artisti del calibro di Ozzy Osbourne e Bob Dylan. Lavorare con un ingegnere audio poliedrico ha influenzato il vostro suono?
Avevamo una visione ben specifica per questo disco. Richiedeva che fosse il più pesante, potente e toccante possibile. Abbiamo provato diversi ingegneri ma Kane è stato quello che ha reso giustizia a queste canzoni. Si sentono davvero potenti e siamo davvero contenti di come è andata a finire.

Secondo le note promozionali “Imperial è destinato a diventare un classico album metal di questa epoca”. Pensi che “Imperial” sia un album metal?
Di sicuro. Penso che veniamo spesso inseriti nella categoria del progressive metal, il che è comprensibile perché certamente abbiamo quegli elementi. Ma in fondo siamo una band metal. È lusinghiero che alcuni pensino che sia destinato a diventare un album metal classico. Siamo entusiasti che tutti lo ascoltino.

Devo ammettere che il primo singolo “Antagonist” è molto emozionante, come è nata la canzone?
“Antagonist” è fondamentalmente solo il giornale che vediamo tutti i giorni. Fondamentalmente è solo un’istantanea di ciò che sta accadendo e dobbiamo riflettere su come mai stia andando in questo modo e cosa dobbiamo fare per implementare a un cambiamento positivo. È un inno per chi vuole un mondo migliore.

Qual è la connessione tra il titolo “Imperial” e il serpente nero sull’artwork di copertina?
Penso che ognuno avrà le proprie idee su questo. La musica e l’arte sono soggettive, dopotutto. Ma il serpente è stato un elemento visivo prominente nella musica / arte di Soen per un bel po’ di tempo. Naturalmente rappresenta il bene e il male, la rinascita e la creatività. Ma se messo a confronto con il titolo “Imperial”, pensi ai serpenti e agli imperi, e dipinge una rappresentazione abbastanza buona di molti dei temi del disco. Nel complesso abbiamo sentito che la semplicità del serpente sembrava forte e classica.

Sarete in tournée dal 4 aprile – tre date in Italia – come immagini il tuo primo tour dopo Covid?
Questa potrebbe essere la domanda più difficile a cui rispondere. La musica dal vivo cambierà per sempre in qualche modo? Solo il tempo lo dirà. Siamo decisamente curiosi di vedere come tutto questo si manifesterà. Il vaccino ci sta dando un barlume di speranza, speriamo solo che le cose tornino alla normalità ad un certo punto! Speriamo davvero di vedervi tutti durante il tour il prima possibile.

Soen will release their fifth album “Imperial” via Silver Lining Music, 29 January 2021, we chatted with Cody Ford about this new release, the most fierce and dynamic of Soen’s journey.

Hi Cody, thanks for doing this interview. You’re releasing “Imperial” during Covid 19 emergency, how are you feeling about the upcoming release?
Feeling good! It’s obviously a shame we may not be able to get to touring right away as you usually do after releasing an album. But I think more than ever people really need music to get them through the hardships that covid19 has brought. We’re excited to provide them with some!

What do you think will be the most surprising thing about “Imperial” for your fans?
I think just how different this album will feel compared to the others. It definitely has its own character. It’s a very powerful and anthemic record, I think people will resonate with it quickly.

“Imperial” engages the listener immediately, what has changed? Your song-writing process for this release?
The song-writing process hasn’t changed all that much. I think the engaging aspect comes from how relatable the music is to a lot of people. I think a lot of people have seen the world gone to shit, people continue to struggle and injustices are being swept under the rug. People are tired of this. These songs unite these people; make them feel like they’re not alone in all of this. “Imperial” was mixed and mastered by Kane Churko, who has worked with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Bob Dylan. To work with a polyhedric audio engineer has influenced your sound? We had a specific vision for this record. It demanded it be as heavy, powerful and poignant as possible. We tried a few different engineers but Kane was the one who did justice to these songs. They feel really powerful and we’re really happy with how it turned out.

According to presentation sheet “Imperial is destined to make it as a classic metal album of this era”. Do you think at “Imperial” as a metal album?
For sure. I think we get lumped into the progressive-metal category a lot, which is understandable because we certainly have those elements. But at our core we’re a metal band. It’s flattering that some think it will be a classic metal album already. We’re excited for everyone to hear it.

I do have to admit that the first single “Antagonist” is very emotional, how was the song born?
Antagonist is basically just the newspaper we see everyday. It’s basically just a capture of what’s happening and we have to reflect on how it got this way and what we need to do to incite positive change. It is an anthem for those who want to see a better world.

Which is the connection between the title “Imperial” and the black snake on the cover artwork?
I think everyone will have their own ideas about this. Music and art is subjective, afterall. But the snake has been a prominent visual in Soen’s music/art for quite some time. Naturally it represents good and evil, rebirth, and creativity. But when put up against the title Imperial, you think of snakes and empires, and it paints a pretty good depiction of a lot of the themes in the record. Overall we felt the simplicity of the snake looked strong and classic.

You will be on the road form 4th April – three dates in Italy – how do you imagine your first tour after Covid will be like?
This may be the toughest question to answer. Will live music change forever in some capacity? Only time will tell. We’re definitely curious to see how this all transpires. The vaccine is giving us a glimmer of hope, we just hope things will get back to normal at some point! We really hope to see you all on the road as soon as possible.

In occasione del 40° anniversario del classico della NWOBHM, “Lightning To The Nations“ (Silver Lining Music \ Duff Press), il batterista Karl Wilcox ha avuto l’idea di registrare nuovamente l’intero album con l’attuale formazione dei Diamond Head per traslare le canzoni nel 21° secolo .

Ciao Karl, quando hai capito che questo era il momento buono per una nuova edizione del vostro classico “Lightning To The Nations”?
Innanzitutto, Giuseppe, grazie per avermi invitato. Avevo l’idea da diversi anni e ne ho discusso a lungo con Brian, tuttavia non ha mai preso slancio, fino al 2019, quando ho deciso di presentare il progetto ad Adam Parsons della Siren Management che gestisce la band. Ho spiegato cosa stavo cercando di fare da diversi anni, ossia ri-registrare il White Album. Poiché la formazione attuale è speciale, avremmo dovuto puntare, a mio avviso, a una versione datata 2020 per il 40 ° anniversario. Per fortuna Adam era d’accordo. Ha preso le redini in mano e ha fatto salire a bordo Brian.

Come ti sei sentito a lavorare di nuovo su un album perfetto? Non hai avuto paura di spezzare la magia dell’album originale?
Da fan è stato surreale. Avevo visto la band dal vivo in numerose occasioni e avevo incontrato tutti i membri dopo vari spettacoli per salutarli. Ho fatto un provino per i Diamond Head e non ho ottenuto il posto. Poi ho registrato con Brian nel suo progetto Radio Mosca (1985-86), dove ho incontrato di nuovo Sean negli studi RPK. Dopo essermi trasferito a New York, mi è stato proposto il progetto Notorious nel 1988, con Sean e Robin George, poi mi è stato offerto il contratto con i Diamond Head alla fine degli anni ’90 – inizio del 91. Quindi, per rispondere alla tua domanda, passare dal cantare i classici come fan sotto al palco a essere sul palco come membro della band e continuare a cantare è un po’ surreale. Non avevo timori di per sé, perché la band fa paura. Tuttavia, ero preoccupato per alcuni dettagli. In primo luogo, non potevamo creare o ricreare la magia di quella settimana del 1980. Sarebbe stato folle provare farlo e comunque non ne ero interessato o non ci credevo. In secondo luogo, questo doveva essere registrato in un modo molto diverso. Non tutti nella stessa stanza o studio ecc. Terzo, c’è sempre la possibilità che qualcosa vada male. È un album così influente su molti livelli. Credevo davvero che le canzoni meritassero di essere ri-registrate con questa formazione ed essere portate nell’era moderna con l’ausilio di nuove tecniche di incisione. Spero che i fan siano d’accordo.

Cosa hai migliorato e cosa hai conservato?
Siamo rimasti fedeli all’originale, ma lo lascerò decidere a tutti voi.

Cosa hai cambiato, invece, nelle tracce di batteria?
Ho aggiunto il mio carattere alle canzoni rimanendo fedele a ciò che suonava Duncan. La batteria è stata registrata con un metronomo e la guida di Brian, senza basso o voce. Non c’era alcun click sull’originale, quindi le canzoni andavano e venivano. Ho spostato il click in alcune canzoni e ho premuto e tirato il click nelle altre.

Avete rispettato la track-list originale durante le sessione di registrazione?
Se stai parlando della registrazione, allora devo dire di no.

Cosa ti racconta Brian dei giorni delle sessioni di registrazione originali nel 1980?
Ad essere onesti, non è qualcosa su cui ci siamo soffermati a discutere. Sono sicuro che di questa nuova versione, Brian ne discuterà a lungo con la stampa.

Qual è la tua canzone preferita della versione originale e qual è quella della versione 2020?
Ti dico: “Lightning to the Nations”.

E le quattro cover?
Avevamo programmato di registrare quattro cover per l’uscita di un EP diversi anni fa, ma non si è mai materializzato il progetto, questa si è rivelata l’occasione perfetta per rendere l'”LTTN 2020″ molto speciale È stato un vero spasso registrare di nuovo tutte e quattro le canzoni solo con un clic e una chitarra guida. Una bella esperienza, mi sono divertito molto. Ian Paice, John Bonham e Simon Phillips erano i miei eroi e hanno influenzato il mio stile di batterista. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple e Led Zeppelin sono stati grandi influenze per i Diamond Head e la cover dei Metallica completa il cerchio.

I Metallica hanno ascoltato la vostra versione di “No Remorse”?
Brian l’ha inviato a Lars.

Ho 45 anni e il primo album dei Diamond Head che ho comprato è stato “Death and Progress”, il tuo debutto con la band. Cosa ricordi di quei giorni?
Ho avuto il piacere di lavorare con Andy Scarth che ha prodotto l’album ed è diventato un buon amico. Avevamo molte soluzioni per alcune canzoni e a volte era piuttosto frustrante. Molte delle tracce le ho registrato da solo con un semplice click. Molte corse in autobus da e per lo studio, aspettando sotto la pioggia che Sean arrivasse e chiedendo a Peter, il mio patrigno, se poteva venirmi a prendere dallo studio alle 2 o alle 3 del mattino.

Il vostro ultimo album in studio è “The Coffin Train”, sei ancora soddisfatto di quella pubblicazione?
Sì, direi che siamo soddisfatti. Anche se sono sicuro che potremmo trovare qualcosa di cui non siamo soddisfatti.

Le vostre prossime mosse senza tour?
Abbiamo lavorato su alcune idee per il susccessore di “Coffin Train” e speravamo di riunirci per focalizzare gli spunti in sala prove, tuttavia a causa del Covid non abbiamo idea di quando saremo in grado di farlo. Sono stato impegnato a lavorare con Martin Jarvis (agente) per riprogrammare tutti gli spettacoli che abbiamo dovuto posticipare e organizzare show futuri che si spera non dovranno essere rimandati di nuovo. Sul fronte personale ho lavorato con Jim Lea degli Slade e da fan è stato fantastico, questa è lamia seconda opportunità di collaborare con Jim. Sto per iniziare un progetto con Jack Frost (7 Witches e Ex Savatage e molti altri). Di recente ho finito la batteria per un album, “Time will Tell”, dei Rekuiems. Ho anche intensificato il mio coinvolgimento con Murat Diril, il produttore di piatti personalizzati, li approvo e poiché trovo che siano grandi opere d’arte… sto cercando di spargere la voce su quanto siano belli. Ah, infine mi impegno a casa, ci sono sempre dei lavoretti da fare.

As the 40th anniversary of classic album of the NWOBHM, “Lightning To The Nations“ (Silver Lining Music \ Duff Press), loomed, the drummer Karl Wilcox devised an idea, to re-record the whole album with the current line-up of Diamond Head and bring the songs into the 21stCentury.

Hi Karl, when did you understand that this was a good moment for a new edition of your classic album “Lightning To The Nations”?
Firstly, Giuseppe thanks for inviting me. I’d had the idea for several years and discussed it with Brian at great length, however it never really gained any momentum, until 2019 when I decided to pitch the idea to Adam Parsons from Siren Management who manages the band. I explained what I had been trying to do for several years, AKA re -record the original white album. As this current lineup is special and we should aim for a 2020 release as it would be the 40th anniversary. Thankfully Adam agreed. He took the reins, and he got Brian on board.

How did you feel to work again on a perfect album? Didn’t you be afraid to broke the magic feeling of the original album?
As a fan it was surreal. I’d seen the band live on numerous occasions and I had met all the band members at various shows to say hello to. I auditioned for Diamond Head and didn’t get gig. I then recorded with Brian on his Radio Moscow project 1985-86, where I met Sean again at RPK studios. After moving to NYC I was offered the Notorious project in 1988 with Sean and Robin George, I was then offered the gig with Diamond Head at the end of 90 early 91. So to answer your question, to go from the front of the stage singing the classics as fan to being on stage and a band member still singing along is a little surreal.I was not afraid per se as the band is killer. However, I was concerned on a couple of levels. Firstly we couldn’t create or recreate the magic of that week in 1980. It would have been crazy to try and something I wasn’t interested in or believed in. Secondly this was to be recorded in a very different manner. Not all in the same room or studio etc. Thirdly there is always the possibility of negativity. It’s such an influential album on many levels. I really believed that the songs deserved to be re-recorded with this line-up, brought into the modern era with the availability of new age of recording techniques. Hope the fans agree

What have you improved and what have you preserved?
We have stayed true to the original and I’ll let you all decide.

What did you change in drums lines?
I’ve added my own character to the songs whilst staying close to what Duncan played. The drums were recorded to a click and a Brian guide, no bass or vocals. There was no click on the original so the songs pushed and pulled. I’ve moved the click in some songs and pushed and pulled on the click in the others.

Did you respect the original track-list during the recording session?
If you’re talking about the recording then I’d have to say no.

What does Brian tell you about the days of its original records sessions in 1980?
To be honest it’s not something we have really sat down and discussed. I’m sure with this new release it’s something Brian will be discussing at length with the press.

Which is you favorite song from the original version and which is the one from the 2020 version?
I would have to say ‘Lightning to the Nations’

What’s about the four covers?
We had planned to record four covers for an EP release several years ago however it never materialized and this turned out to be the perfect opportunity to make the LTTN 2020 very special It was a blast recording all four songs again just with click and a guide guitar. I had a great time and a lot of fun. Ian Paice, John Bonham and Simon Phillips were drumming heroes of mine and an influential on my drumming. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were big influences on Diamond Head and the Metallica cover makes the circle complete.

Did Metallica listening to your version of “No Remorse”?
Brian has sent it to Lars.

I’m 45 years old and the first Diamond Head album I bought was “Death and Progress”, your debut with the band. What do you remember about those days?
I had the pleasure of working with Andy Scarth who produced the album and became good friends. We had a lot of arrangements for some of the songs and it was quite frustrating at times. Several of the songs I recorded on my own with just a click. Lots of bus rides to and from the studio, waiting in the rain for Sean to arrive and asking Peter my stepfather if he could collect me from the studio at 2 or 3am.

Your last studio album is “The Coffin Train”, are you still satisfied of this release?
Yes I would say we are satisfied . I’m sure we could find somethings we are not satisfied.

Your next moves without tour?
We have been working on ideas for a follow to the ‘Coffin Train’ and were hoping to get together to thrash the ideas out in a rehearsal room however due to the Covid we have no idea when we will be able to do this.I have been busy working with Martin Jarvis (agent) to reschedule all the shows we have had to postpone and setting up future shows which hopefully will not have to be postponed again.On the personal front I have been working with Jim Lea from the band Slade which as a fan has been a blast this is the second opportunity to work with Jim. I’m due to start a project with Jack Frost (7 Witches and Ex Savatage along with many others). I recently finished the drums for a follow album up to Rekuiems ‘Time will Tell’ album. I also have ramped up my involvement with Murat Diril, the custom cymbal maker, I endorse them, but as I find them to be such works of art..I’m trying to get the word out just how fine these cymbals are… Oh and lastly working on the house there are always jobs to be done.
