A poco meno di un anno dalla pubblicazione del loro ottimo terzo album “Unlocked & Reloaded”, i Sainted Sinners di Frank Pané tornano con il loro nuovo album “Taste It” (ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records), una grande raccolta di pezzi di classico hard rock.
Ciao Frank, solo pochi mesi fa ci siamo sentiti per il vostro album precedente “Unlocked & Reloaded”, oggi i Sainted Sinner hanno un nuovo full-lenght, “Taste It”. Stai vivendo una delle tue stagioni più stimolanti dal punto di vista compositivo?
Ciao Giuseppe, sì… è decisamente una stagione molto creativa e fruttuosa per noi. Abbiamo sfruttato la grande chimica che si è creata tra noi per “Unlocked & Reloaded” per diventare un team creativo molto efficiente, e ne sono davvero felice.
Il disco contiene brani scritti per “Unlocked & Reloaded” o sono stati composti solo per “Taste It”?
Tranne l’idea della canzone che è diventata “Never Back Down”, che è stata lasciata fuori ai tempi delle session di scrittura dell nostro secondo album “Back With a Vengeance”, tutte le idee erano nuove e maturate dopo l’uscita di “Unlocked & Reloaded”.
Pubblicare due album a pochi mesi di distanza, nel mezzo di una pandemia che ha bloccato le attività live, non è una mossa rischiosa?
Ad essere sincero non lo so. Ci sono come in tutto probabilmente pro e contro. Durante la scrittura di queste canzoni, tutto sembrava così naturale ed eccitante, quindi la nostra volontà era di condividerle con il mondo il prima possibile. Dal nostro punto di vista, trattenerle e aspettare non era proprio una cosa pensabile. Tuttavia questa è la nostra visione delle cose e ovviamente se la nostra nuova etichetta ROAR ci avesse detto di aspettare, ovviamente avremmo seguito il loro consiglio. Ma dato che anche loro erano d’accordo, abbiamo deciso di tirarlo fuori. Un altro buon effetto collaterale è forse che i fan del rock ci hanno ancora nel loro radar dai tempi di “Unlocked…”, quindi se gli è piaciuto l’ultimo, forse saranno felici di ricevere del nuovo materiale prima di quanto probabilmente si aspettassero.
Il titolo “Taste It” sembra un invito a fidarsi di voi, qualcosa come “dai, prova il nostro sound”…
Esattamente, questo è ciò che significa! E dato che avevo questa idea di una bottiglia di whisky con l’etichetta Sainted Sinners come tema per la copertina che ronzava nella mia mente da un po’ di tempo, mi è sembrata una decisione perfetta.
Con “Taste It” avete tagliato il traguardo del quarto album, siete soddisfatti del livello raggiunto dalla band? Quanto sei vicino all’idea che avevi dei Sainted Sinners quando hai deciso di iniziare questa nuova avventura?
Sappiamo tutti che questi sono tempi difficili per una “nuova” band e ovviamente ci potrebbero essere molti più album venduti, più visualizzazioni su Youtube, più stream, ecc… tuttavia da un punto di vista artistico sono davvero orgoglioso e felice di ciò che raggiunto nei nostri 5 anni di esistenza. 4 album e finalmente con il nostro 3° album siamo diventati una vera band e la gente ci ha riconosciuto come questo e non come un semplice progetto. Penso che abbiamo avuto la crescita naturale della consapevolezza del nostro ruolo nel mondo del rock e sono sicuro che questa cosa, così come noi come band, si evolverà ulteriormente con ogni uscita in futuro.
“Unlocked & Reloaded” è stato il frutto di una formazione nuova, la stessa che ritroviamo oggi su “Taste It”: pensi che nell’ultimo album ci sia stata una maggiore sintonia tra di voi?
Di sicuro. Anche senza incontrarci di persona prima che uscisse “Unlocked…” avevamo un’ottima intesa lavorativa, ma ora, dopo aver fatto più cose insieme, siamo diventati davvero una squadra e abbiamo potuto evolvere ulteriormente la nostra intesa lavorativa, e anche a livello personale ci piace molto stare insieme e avere una grande intesa.
L’album è stato il risultato di un lavoro di squadra o di idee individuali poi elaborate in sala prove?
È stato un lavoro di squadra, purtroppo non elaborato in sala prove, per ovvi motivi, ma attraverso la condivisione di file, tante sessioni di chat online e in cui ognuno ha portato le proprie idee e creatività. Questa è la prima volta in un album dei Sainted Sinners che le idee iniziali per le canzoni non sono venute solo da me, ma anche da Ernesto e Jack, quindi abbiamo davvero lavorando insieme come un team su queste canzoni.
Siete uno scrigno di perle di puro hard rock ma avete scelto di registrare la cover di un brano, “Losing My Religion” (REM), non proprio in linea con il vostro stile: come è nata questa particolare decisione?
Grazie mille, ci siamo detti che se avessimo fatto una cover allora non ne avremmo fatto una ovvia, ma piuttosto qualcosa di un genere diverso, che la gente non si aspetta e che possiamo personalizzare con parti riarrangiate, ecc… Avevamo alcune idee ma “Losing My Religion” mi è sembrato l’idea migliore per questo album e sono davvero felice di come sia venuta fuori. Suonarla sembra come suonare una canzone dei Sainted Sinners. Quindi abbiamo raggiunto il nostro obiettivo.
Possiamo aspettarci un nuovo album a breve o vi prenderete una meritata pausa?
Beh, abbiamo già abbastanza materiale rimasto dall’ultima sessione di scrittura che potrebbe bastare per un altro album. Abbiamo scelto queste canzoni per “Taste It”, perché pensavamo che garantissero un album con un buon bilanciamento generale tra le canzoni. Quindi c’è molto materiale di cui siamo entusiasti tanto quanto per le canzoni che sono finite su “Taste It”. Vedremo dove ci porterà “Taste It” e speriamo di poter fare molti spettacoli dal vivo per promuovere l’album, ma le cose come vedi sono già impostate per l’album numero 5.
Not even a year a after the release of their great third album “Unlocked & Reloaded”, Frank Pané’s Sainted Sinners are back with their new album “Taste It” (ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records), a great collection of songs by classic hard rock.
Hi Frank, just a few months ago we got in touch for your previous album “Unlocked & Reloaded”, today Sainted Sinner have a new full-length out, “Taste It”. Are you experiencing one of your most inspirational seasons?
Hi Giuseppe, yes…it’s definitely are very creative and fruitful season for us. We transported the great chemistry we had doing “Unlocked & Reloaded” towards becoming a very efficient writing team and i’m really happy about that.
Does the disc contain songs written for “Unlocked & Reloaded” or were they composed just for “Taste It”?
Except the song idea that became “Never Back Down” which was left over from the writing session for our second album “Back With a Vengeance” all ideas were fresh and written after the release of “Unlocked & Reloaded“.
Releasing two albums a few months apart, in the midst of a pandemic that has blocked live activities, isn’t that a risky move?
To be honest i don’t know. There are as with everything probably pros and cons. Everything when writing these songs felt so natural and exciting so our feeling was to share them with the world as soon as possible. From our standpoint to hold them back and wait wasn’t really a thing we thought about. However that’s our view of things and obviously if our new label ROAR would have told us to wait we of course would have followed their advice. But as they were also up for it we said let’s get it out. Another good side effect is maybe that rock fans still have us on their radar from “Unlocked…”, so if they liked the last one they are maybe happy to get some new material sooner than they probably expected.
The title “Taste It” seems like an invitation to trust you, something like “come on, taste our sound”…
Exactly, that is what it stands for and as i had this idea with a Sainted Sinners labeled Whiskey bottle as the cover motive buzzing around for some time it felt like a perfect fit.
With “Taste It” you have crossed the finish line of the fourth album, are you satisfied with the level reached by the band? How close are you to the idea you had of Sainted Sinners when you decided to start this new adventure?
We all know that these are difficult times being a “new“ band and of course there always could be more albums sold, more views on Youtube, more steams, etc….however from an artistic point i’m really proud and happy what we achieved in our 5 years existence. 4 albums and finally with our 3rd album we became a real band and people recognized us as that and not another project. I think we have a natural growth to our awareness in the rock world and i’m positive that this and also we as a band will further evolve with each release in the future.
“Unlocked & Reloaded” was the result of a new line-up, the same that we find today on “Taste It”: do you think that on the new album there is a greater harmony between you?
For sure. Even without meeting all together in person before “Unlocked…” was out we had a great working chemistry, but now after doing more things together we really became a team and could further evolve our working chemistry and also on a personal level we really enjoy being together and have an overall great alliance together.
Was the album the result of teamwork or individual ideas then elaborated in the rehearsal room?
It was a teamwork, unfortunately not elaborated in a rehearsal room, because of obvious reasons, but by sharing files, many online chat sessions and everybody bringing in his own ideas and creativity. This is the first time on a Sainted Sinners album that initial song ideas came not just from myself, but also Ernesto and Jack, so we really were working together as a team on these songs.
You are a treasure trove of pure hard rock gems but you have chosen to record the cover of a song, “Losing My Religion” (REM), not exactly in line with your style: how did this particular decision come about?
Thank you so much. We said if we do a cover then we do not an obvious one, but rather something from a different genre, that people not expect and that we can make ours with rearranging parts, etc… we had a few ideas floating around but “Losing My rRligion” felt the best for this album and i’m really happy how it turned out. Playing it feels like playing a Sainted Sinners song. So we reached our goal.
Can we expect a new album soon or are you getting a well-deserved break?
Well, from the last writing session we have already enough material left that could make up for another album and we picked theses songs for “Taste It“ , because we thought they make up for a good album with the overall flow between the songs in mind, so there is lots of material around we are as excited about as the songs we now put out on “Taste It“. We will see where “Taste It“ will bring us and we hope we can do many live shows to promote the album, but things as you see are already set for album #5.
