Frank Pané e i suoi Sainted Sinners tornano con un’inedita anima italiana rappresentata dal nuovo cantante Jack Meille e da Ernesto Ghezzi alle tastiere. “Unlocked & Reloaded” (El Puerto Records) è un nuovo inizio senza legacci e con nuove energie.

Benvenuti, dal 4 dicembre è uscito il vostro nuovo album “Unlocked & Reloaded”: il significato del titolo è legato in qualche modo alla nuova formazione? Possiamo considerarla un nuovo inizio senza catene e con nuove energie?
Frank: Grazie e piacere di conoscerti. Esatto, dopo il secondo album c’è stato un lungo periodo in cui alcune persone potrebbero aver pensato che i Sainted Sinners fossero finiti, ho sentito il bisogno di trovare un titolo per l’album con un significato collegato al nostro ritorno con una nuova formazione e con rinnovata energia, per quello che penso sia il nostro miglior materiale di sempre.

Frank, potresti presentare i nuovi membri?
Frank: Ovviamente. Alle tastiere abbiamo Ernesto Ghezzi, con il quale ho avuto il piacere di suonare insieme in un sacco di concerti con Ian Paice e sin dal primo momento abbiamo avuto una grande intesa musicale e simpatia reciproca e sono diventato un fan dei suoi virtuosismi. Quando è stato il momento di “ricaricare” i Sainted Sinners Ernesto è stata ovviamente la prima scelta. Rico Bowen è l’uomo nuovo al basso. Un ragazzo di grande talento, che ha già collaborato nella sua carriera con artisti del calibro di Madonna e Paul McCartney. Per pura fortuna ci siamo incontrati a uno spettacolo ad Amburgo e da allora abbiamo mantenuto i contatti. Durante la ricerca del bassista giusto ho contattato Rico per sapere se fosse interessato e fortunatamente lo era. Come nuova voce dei Sainted Sinners, sono orgoglioso di presentare Mr. Iacopo / Jack Meille. Io e Jack ci siamo incontrati per la prima volta nel backstage di uno spettacolo dei Tygers e sono sempre stato un fan della sua voce. Non ero affatto sicuro che Jack sarebbe stato interessato, ma fortunatamente lo era e a quel punto la formazione era completa.

Pané è un cognome italiano?
Frank: No, gli antenati di mio padre provenivano dalla Francia / Belgio prima di trasferirsi in Germania

Come è cambiato il tuo modo di scrivere canzoni dopo questo stravolgimento?
Frank: L’approccio di base con cui ho buttato giù le prime idee di riff e le strutture delle canzoni non è cambiato molto. Mando tutto, sempre dopo che ho ottenuto quello che penso possa essere un buon arrangiamento di base della canzone, al nostro batterista Berci e lui mi rispedisce la traccia con la sua batteria. Dopo di che verrà inviato tutto agli altri ragazzi che contribuiscono con le loro parti e portano idee sugli arrangiamenti. L’input creativo dei tre nuovi membri ha portato il materiale a un livello più alto e per questo motivo ovviamente ci sono venute in mente idee diverse e tutti si sono nutriti a vicenda della altrui creatività. Ha funzionato tutto in modo molto organico e naturale. È stata una vera gioia realizzare questo album, cosa che penso si possa avvertire nel prodotto finale.

Jack, sei coinvolto in altre band, potresti spiegare cosa rende diversi i Sainted Sinner dai tuoi altri progetti e perché hai accettato questa nuova sfida?
Jack: Ogni band in cui canto ha una personalità e un suono molto forti ed è questo che mi eccita ogni volta! È una sfida: come potrò contribuire a questo suono già eccezionale? Conoscevo Frank, ci siamo incontrati un paio di volte mentre ero in tournée in Germania con i Tygers. In realtà è stato Micky, Crystal, l’ormai ex chitarrista dei Tygers che mi ha detto che Frank stava cercando un cantante per i Sainted Sinners e che non sapeva se sarei stato interessato o meno. Quindi ci siamo messi in contatto e dal momento in cui mi ha inviato due demo delle canzoni – “Standing On Top” e “Free To Be” – ho immediatamente avuto l’ispirazione per i testi e le melodie. Era qualcosa di veramente magico e speciale. Frank e io abbiamo scoperto di avere una passione molto simile e lo stesso approccio alla musica. Tieni presente anche che ho iniziato a scrivere durante il lockdown. Questo disco mi ha salvato la vita perché per un paio di mesi ho avuto qualcosa su cui concentrarmi. Queste canzoni sono state il mio antidoto al Covid!

Ernesto, hai suonato con Eros Ramazzotti, come cambia il tuo approccio alle tastiere quando suoni in un gruppo pop o in un gruppo hard rock?
Ernesto: Il mio atteggiamento sul palco rimane sempre lo stesso: “Sii felice! Goditela”. Perché poter suonare musica è un dono. Sono abituato a collaborare con cantanti pop famosi come Eros e con altri non conosciuti fuori dall’Italia, come Max Pezzali con cui giro da 16 anni. L’approccio pop è più restrittivo del rock, più controllato, c’è sicuramente meno spazio per la creatività. Quando suono rock posso nutrire la bestia che ho dentro… è come un urlo della mia anima. Soprattutto con i Sainted Sinners, posso esprimermi liberamente, questa è una sensazione fantastica, mi sento tanto bene!

Nella tracklist di “Unlocked & Reloaded” possiamo trovare brani come “The Hammer of the Gods”, “Stone Cold Sober” e “Farewell to Kings”, sono questi pezzi un piccolo tributo ai Led Zeppelin, Queen e Rush e, in generale, ai grandi della storia dell’hard rock?
Jack: “Hammer of the Gods” è sicuramente un chiaro tributo ai Led Zeppelin. Frank mi ha chiamato e mi ha spiegato che quando scriveva quella traccia stava letteralmente pensando alle canzoni degli Zeppelin che lo hanno influenzato, e penso che sia stato Ernesto ad avere l’idea di scrivere un testo su di loro… Tutti sanno che sono un grande fan di Jimmy Page e Robert Plant ed è stato un piacere e un onore essere coinvolto nella realizzazione di questa canzone epica. Ho scelto io titoli, per certi versi “Farewell To Kings”, anche se non è ispirato a Rush, è un tributo al compianto Neal Peart, mentre “Stone Cold Sober” non ha alcuna relazione con i Queen… ma c’è una canzone di una band scozzese che ha lo stesso titolo… Tocca a voi scoprire qual è!

Il nome Sainted Sinners è ispirato ai Whitesnake e al loro album “Saints & Sinners”?
Frank: Ovviamente, essendo un fan ed essendo stato ispirato dai classici album hard rock degli anni ’70 e dei primi anni ’80, conosco il titolo di quell’album, tuttavia il nome della band mi è venuto in mente perché stavo cercando un moniker con cui tutti potessero identificarsi poiché è un dualismo comune a ogni essere umano: il buono e il cattivo, l’angelo e il diavolo, ecc… Sainted Sinners suona molto bene nella sua semplicità.

Avete avuto modo di testare le nuove canzoni sul palco prima del lockdown?
Frank: Sfortunatamente non abbiamo potuto perché era già tutto bloccato quando la nuova formazione è stata completata.

Le vostre prossime mosse?
Frank: Non vediamo l’ora di suonare dal vivo non appena la situazione ce lo consentirà e di eseguire le canzoni di “Unlocked & Reloaded” più un paio di brani dai vecchi album. Abbiamo una chimica dannatamente buona nella band e tutto sarà magico.

Frank Pané and his Sainted Sinners are back with a new Italian soul represented by the new singer Jack Meille and Ernesto Ghezzi on keyboards. “Unlocked & Reloaded” (El Puerto Records) is a new beginning without locks and with new energies.

Welcome, from the 4^th December your new album “Unlocked & Reloaded” is out: is the meaning of the title connected with the new line up? Is this a new beginning without locks and new energies?
Frank: Thank you, nice to meet you. Exactly, after the second album and a time were some people might thought Sainted Sinners is over i felt the need to find an album title with a strong meaning connected to our comeback with a new lineup, new strength and what i think is our best material to date.

Frank, could you to introduce your new members?
Frank: Of course. On keyboards we have Ernesto Ghezzi, with whom i had the pleasure to play together a bunch of shows with Ian Paice and since the first moment we had a great musical connection and sympathy for each other and i became a fan of his virtuous playing. When it was time to “reload” Sainted Sinners Ernesto was obviously the first and perfect choice. Rico Bowen is the new man on bass. A super talented guy, that already did sessions with the likes of Madonna & Paul McCartney in his career. We luckily met at a show in Hamburg and kept contact since. When searching for the right bass player i contacted Rico to find out if he was interested and luckily he was. As the new voice of Sainted Sinners i’m proud to present Mr. Iacopo/Jack Meille. Jack and myself met the first time backstage at a Tygers show and i always been a fan of his voice. I was not totally sure if Jack would be interested or have the time, but luckily he was and so the lineup was complete.

Is Pané an Italian surname?
Frank: No, my fathers’s ancestors came from France/Belgium before they moved to Germany

How is changed your songwriting after this revolution?
Frank: The basic approach how i come up with the first riff ideas and song structures didn’t change that much really. I always send them, after i have what i think could be a good basic song arrangement, to our drummer Berci and he sends the track back with his drums. Then it will be send to the other guys and everybody contributes their parts and brings in ideas about the arrangement if needed. The creative input from the three new members has brought the material to a new level and because of that you obviously come up with more diverse ideas and everybody feeds off each others creativity. It worked all very organic and natural. It was a joy to make this album as i think you can hear in the end product.

Jack, you are involved in other bands, could you explain what makes different Sainted Sinner from your others projects e why you accepted this new challenge?
Jack: Every band  I sing in has a very strong personality and sound and that’s what excites me every time! It’s a challenge: how am I going to contribute to this already great sound? I knew Frank, we’ve been meeting a couple of times while I was touring Germany with Tygers. It was actually Micky, Crystal, the now ex Tygers guitarist who said to me Frank was looking for a singer for Sainted Sinners and  wasn’t sure I would be interested. So we got in touch and from the minute he sent me two demos of the songs – “Standing On Top” and “Free To Be” – I instantly got the inspiration for the lyrics and melodies. It was something really magic and special. Frank and myself discovered to have such common passion and the same approach to music. Bare in mind also that I started writing during the lock down. This record saved my life as for a couple of months I had a something to keep my mind concentrated on. These songs have been my antidote to Covid!

Ernesto, you played with Eros Ramazzotti, how does change your approach with keyboards when you play in a pop band or in an hard rock group?
Ernesto: My attitude on stage always remains the same, be happy! Enjoy! Cause playing music is a gift. I’m used to playing with pop singers as famous as Eros but not known outside Italy, like Max Pezzali I’m playing with since 16 years. The pop approach is more restrictive than rock, more controlled, there is certainly less space for creativity. When I play rock I can feed the beast I have inside… it’s like a scream of my soul. Especially with Sainted Sinners, I can express myself freely, this is a fantastic sensation, I feel so good!

Into the tracklist of “Unlocked & Reloaded”  we can find song as “The Hammer of the Gods”, “Stone Cold Sober” and “Farewell to Kings”, are these track a little tribute to Led Zeppelin, Queen and Rush and, in general, to greats of the hard rock history?
Jack: ‘Hammer Of The Gods’ is definitively an open tribute to Led Zeppelin. Frank called me and explained to me that when he was writing that song he was literally thinking about  the Zeppelin songs that influenced him, and I think it was Ernesto who had the idea of writing the lyrics about them… Everybody knows I am a huge fan of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant and it was both a pleasure and honour to be involved in the making of this epic song. I chose the titles so yes, in some ways “Farewell To Kings” even though it is not inspired by Rush, it is a tribute do the late Neal Peart, while “Stone Cold Sober” has no relation with Queen at all… but there is a song from a Scottish band that has the same title… It’s your turn to discover which it is!

The name Sainted Sinners in inspired by Whitesnake and their album  “Saints & Sinners”?
Frank: Of course being a fan of and inspired by the classic Hard Rock albums of the 70s & early 80s you are aware of that album title, however the band name came to mind because I was searching for a name that everybody can relate to as it’s a subject that will be with every human being all their lives: the good and the bad, the angel and the devil, etc… So Sainted Sinners matches that and it sounds cool… as simple as that.

Have you checked the new songs on stage before the lockdown?
Frank: Unfortunately we couldn’t as it was already lockdown when the new lineup was complete.

Your next moves?
Frank: We can’t wait to play live as soon as the current situation allows and perform these songs from “Unlocked & Reloaded” plus a couple tunes from the old albums. We have such a good chemistry going on in the band that this will be magic.
