I Sirenia si sono rinnovati con il loro decimo album in studio, “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations” (Napalm Records). Abbiamo fatto due chiacchiere con il mastermind Morten Veland, un uomo che non ha certo paura di combinare il metal sinfonico con le influenze più moderne.

Benvenuto Morten, come è nato il vostro decimo album “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations”?
A causa della pandemia questo si è rivelato un album impegnativo da realizzare, abbiamo dovuto fare molte cose in modo molto diverso da quello che avremmo fatto normalmente. La pandemia ha colpito l’Europa con tutta la sua forza solo pochi giorni prima l’inizio delle nostre sessioni di registrazione dell’album. Il volo di Emmanuelle è stato cancellato e non è riuscita ad arrivare in Norvegia se non sei mesi dopo. Di conseguenza l’album è stato posticipato di sei mesi. Anche realizzare video e foto promozionali è stato complicato e al momento non siamo ancora in grado di fare un tour. Quindi è una situazione frustrante quella in cui noi artisti in generale e fan ci troviamo in questi giorni.

Oggigiorno non hai paura di combinare un suono sinfonico pesante con influenze moderne, perché hai cambiato il tuo approccio alla musica in questi anni?
Ogni volta che inizio a scrivere materiale per un nuovo album, tendo a passare i primi due mesi a sperimentare e cercare una nuova direzione in cui posso portare l’album. Questa volta sono stato ispirato da molti suoni di tastiera retrò ed elementi elettronici. Questi sono elementi che sono stati presenti anche in passato, ma questa volta abbiamo decisamente dato loro un ruolo più importante. Mi è piaciuto molto fare questo album, ed è questo che è importante per me, cercando di far rimanere le cose interessanti. Ho bisogno di nuove motivazioni e ispirazione ogni volta e ho bisogno di fare cose nuove per rimanere ispirato.

L’album si conclude con una vostra versione della hit “Voyage Voyage” dei Desireless` 1986, non temi la reazione dei tuoi fan a una cover di una canzone pop?
No, assolutamente no. Se dovessimo temere le reazioni dei fan e degli ascoltatori, tanto vale smettere di fare musica. Comunque ci aspettavamo certamente feedback contrastanti su quella canzone. Ma le reazioni sono state sorprendentemente positive, devo dire. Per me non ha mai avuto senso per una band metal coverizzare un’altra band metal, dato che le versioni suonerebbero comunque troppo simili. Ho sempre preferito trovare una canzone di un genere diverso e poi trasformarla in una versione metal.

Secondo te “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations” contiene una o più canzoni che potrebbero lasciare un segno nella carriera dei Sirenia? Forse “December Snow”?
Non sono sicuro di aver capito esattamente cosa intendi, ma direi che canzoni come “December Snow”, “We come to Ruins” e “Downwards Spiral” sono una specie di canzone tipica dei Sirenia. Hanno la maggior parte degli elementi per cui siamo conosciuti negli anni.

In “Downwards Spiral” Emmanuelle è supportata dalla voce di Joakim Næss, perché ti piace lavorare con lui così spesso?
La risposta a questa domanda è abbastanza semplice: perché amiamo la sua voce. È un grande cantante e amico ed è molto bello lavorare con lui. Anche la sua voce si fonde perfettamente con la nostra musica.

Qual è la tua dipendenza n. 1?
Birra artigianale.

Dopo questo difficile 2020, pensi che la pandemia abbia dimostrato che l’arte è essenziale per la vita delle persone? La musica ancora di più?
Sicuramente credo che la musica possa essere una forza positiva nella vita della gente, e ho sentito da molte persone come la musica le abbia aiutate nei periodi difficili della vita. Penso che la musica abbia svolto un ruolo importante per molti in particolare durante questa pandemia.

Quanto è difficile la vita per un musicista lontano dal palco?
È molto difficile. Non sono stato in questa situazione dal 1991. Non che ci fosse una pandemia in quel momento, ma quella è stata l’ultima volta che sono andato per così tanto tempo senza far nulla.

Trasmetterete in streaming un release concert per “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations”?
Avevamo dei piani per quello. Ma si è rivelato così complicato e rischioso da organizzare in questi tempi, che per ora abbiamo deciso di lasciar perdere. Forse faremo uno spettacolo in live streaming in un secondo momento, ma per ora quei piani sono in sospeso. La nostra band è trasmessa in tutta Europa, in Norvegia, Regno Unito e Francia. Questo non si è mai rivelato complicato in passato, ma durante la pandemia è stato più difficile per motivi pratici. Mi mancano davvero il resto della mia band e i nostri fan. Non vedo l’ora di tornare di nuovo in tour. Un saluto a tutti i nostri fan italiani, state al sicuro e speriamo di vedervi presto.

Sirenia are renewed in darkness with their tenth studio album, “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations” (Napalm Records). We had a chat with the mastermind Morten Veland, a man who is certainly not afraid of combining a heavy symphonic sound with modern influences.

Welcome Morten, how is born your tenth album “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations”?
Due to the pandemic this turned out to be a challenging album to make, we had to do a lot of things quite different than we would normally do. The pandemic hit Europe with full force just a few days before we were supposed to begin the recording sessions for the album. Emmanuelle’s flight was canceled and she were not able to make it to Norway until six months later. As a result the album was postponed by six months. Also making videos and promo pics was complicated, and at the moment we are still not able to tour. So it is a frustrating situation that we, artists in general and fans find ourselves in these days.

Nowdays  you are not afraid of combining a heavy symphonic sound with modern influences, why did you change your approach to the music in these years?
Every time that I start writing material for a new album, I tend to spend the first couple of months experimenting and searching for a new direction in which I can take the album. This time I was inspired by a lot of retro keyboard sounds and electronic elements. These are elements that have been with us in the past as well, but we definitely gave them a bigger role this time. I really enjoyed making this album, and that is what it is about for me, trying to make things remain interesting. I need new motivation and inspiration every time, and I need to do new things in order to stay inspired.

The album ends with a cover of Desireless` 1986 hit “Voyage Voyage”,  don’t you fear your fans’ reaction to a pop song cover?
No, absolutely not. If we were to fear the reactions from fans and listeners we might as well stop making music. However we certainly was expecting mixed feedback on that song. But the reactions have been surprisingly good I must say. To me it never really made any sense for a metal band to cover another metal band, as the versions would end up sounding too similar anyway. I always preferred finding a song in a different genre and then turning it into a metal version.

According to you does “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations”  contain one or more songs  that could mark the career of Sirenia? Maybe “December Snow”?
Not sure if I understand exactly what you mean, but I would say that songs like “December Snow”, “We Come to Ruins” and ‘Downwards Spiral’ are kind of typical Sirenia songs. They have most of the elements that we are known for over the years.

In “Downwards Spiral” Emmanuelle is supported by the voice of Joakim Næss, Why do you love working with him so often?
The answer to that question is quite simple, it is because we love his voice. He is a great singer and friend and it is very nice to work with him. His voice also blends perfectly into our music.

Which is your addiction n. 1?
Crafts brew.

After this difficult 2020, do you think this pandemic has shown that art is essential for people’s lives? Music even more?
I certainly do believe that music can be a positive force in people’s lives, and I have heard from many people how music has helped them through difficult periods of the lives. I think that music has played an important role for many during this pandemic in particular.

How difficult is life for a musician far from the stage?
It is very difficult. I have not been in this situation since 1991. Not that there was any pandemic at that time, but that was the last time I went for such a long time without entering a stage.

Will you stream a release concert for “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations”?
We had plans for that. But it turned out to be so complicated and risky to arrange in these times, that we decided to drop it for now. Maybe we will do a live stream show at a later point, but for now those plans are on hold. Our band is spread all over Europe, in Norway, UK and France. This never proved to be complicated in the past, but during the pandemic it has been more difficult for practical reasons. I really miss the rest of my band and our fans.
