Arrivano al debutto i Darkened, formazione che nelle proprie fila conta membri ed ex membri di Memoriam, Bolt Thrower, A Canorous Quintet, Grave e Dismember. Con un pedigree del genere, “Kingdom of Decay” è il disco che ci si aspetta: un classico death metal di scuola europea (Inghilterra e Olanda) che alterna momenti di feroce violenza ad altri più oscuri di matrice doom. Poco spazio è lasciato alle melodie di stampo swedish, e questo non è un male, perché l’opera funziona nella sua monolitica. Niente di stupefacente, ma siamo certi che “Kingdom of Decay” (Edged Circle) produrrà più di un ghigno malefico di piacere sul viso degli amanti del death più ortodosso. Il chitarrista Hempa Brynolfsson ci ha presentato nei dettagli i contenuti del frutto di questa cooperazione internazionale.
Benvenuto Hempa, come è nata questa band di stelle internazionali?
In principio, Andy e Daryl hanno discusso di fare qualcosa insieme, poi sono stato contattato anche io per unirmi con loro nel marzo del 2018, ma non avevano ancora del materiale, quindi ho iniziato a scrivere un po’ di riff e condividerli. Nell’aprile 2018 mi sono piaciute particolarmente cinque-sei tracce e così nel maggio 2018 ho chiesto a Linus di unirsi alla band. Abbiamo deciso di registrare tre tracce per l’EP “Into The Blackness” e ci abbiamo lavorato su mentre cercavamo un vocalist. All’inizio avevamo l’idea di utilizzare vocalist diversi per le singole tracce, ma a dicembre 2018 abbiamo finalmente trovato Gord e lui è diventato un membro effettivo.
È difficile per voi trovare il tempo per i Darkened al di fuori delle vostre band principali?
No, non proprio, ci siamo imposti che i Darkened non interferiranno con altre band o progetti.
C’è qualche possibilità che vi vedremo mai dal vivo in tour?
Mai dire mai. Ma è un po’ difficile dovendoci coordinare logisticamente dato che viviamo in posti diversi: Canada, Regno Unito e Svezia.
Pensi che il vostro suono sia semplicemente il mix delle vostre precedenti esperienze o ci sia qualcosa di nuovo?
Penso che sia una combinazione di tutte le nostre diverse esperienze e musicalità combinate in qualcosa di nuovo. Sembra fresco ma allo stesso tempo suona vecchio!
Mentre del primo Ep “Into the Blackness” che mi dici?
Avevamo completato cinque tracce e abbiamo semplicemente preso quelle che preferivamo in quel momento, ci abbiamo lavorato e le abbiamo registrate. E’ andato davvero bene, quindi abbiamo sentito che dovevamo continuare su quella strada e fare un album completo.
“Kingdom of Decay” è uscito l’11 settembre, c’è una connessione tra il titolo e l’anniversario dell’attacco alle Torri Gemelle? Penso che quel giorno sia iniziato il decadimento del regno degli Stati Uniti e il mondo è cambiato…
Nessuna connessione, è andata semplicemente così. Sì, il mondo è un pazzo “Kingdom Of Decay”!
A causa delle vostre rinomate esperienze passate, avete sentito molta pressione durante le sessioni di registrazione?
No, per niente, facciamo solo quello che ci piace, ed è suonare death metal. Lo facciamo per noi stessi, e se a qualcuno piace questo, è solo un bonus.
Come nascono le canzoni? Vivete in diversi Paesi, la distanza è un problema?
Io mi occupo dei riff e della pre-registrazione delle tracce base di batteria con EZdrums. Poi io e Linus lavoriamo insieme sull’arrangiamento e lui aggiunge i suoi assoli, ha veramente grandi idee. Dopodiché Andy registra la batteria nel modo in cui spreferisce. Gord scrive i testi e incide la voce, e Tobias registra il basso. La traccia può essere modificata durante l’intero processo con tutti che danno il loro input. Quindi, dire che siamo tutti degli autori! Tutte le parti contribuiscono con la propria competenza ed esperienza.
Amo le parti doomish delle vostre tracce, quanto è importante ottenere un feeling così oscuro nelle vostre canzoni?
Molto importante, ovviamente. Vogliamo creare un mood che rappresenti la canzone nel migliore dei modi.
I tuoi brani preferiti dell’album?
Al momento ho “The White Horse Of Pestilence” come mio preferito. Ma domani potrebbe essere un’altra traccia!
Ci sarà un singolo\video?
Non lo so davvero. Abbiamo parlato di fare un video, ma dobbiamo prima risolvere il problema delle nostre diverse dislocazioni nazionali.

With such a pedigree, “Kingdom of Decay” is the album that is expected: a classic death metal of the European school (England and Holland) that alternates moments of ferocious violence with other darker ones of a doom matrix. Little space is left for Swedish-style melodies, and this is not a bad thing, because the work works in its monolithic form. Nothing astonishing, but we are sure that “Kingdom of Decay” (Edged Circle) will produce more than an evil grin of pleasure on the face of the most orthodox death lovers. Guitarist Hempa Brynolfsson presented us in detail the contents of the fruit by this international cooperation.
Welcome Hempa, how was born this all star band?
Andy and Daryl talked about doing something together, and I got questioned to join, that was in Mars 2018. But they didn’t had any material yet so I begun to do some riffing and sharing the riffs with them. And then in april 2018 I did like 5-6 tracks and in May 2018 I asked Linus to join the band. Then we decided 3 tracks to be recorded for the EP “Into The Blackness”. So we worked on these 3 tracks while looking for a vocalist. At first we had an idea of using some different vocalists for the tracks, but in December 2018 we finally found a Gord, and he became a member.
Is difficult for you to find the time for Darkened outside your main bands?
No not really, we have said that Darkened would not interfere with other bands or projects.
Is there any chance we’ll ever see the band live on tour?
You never know. But its a bit hard with all the coordination and logistic when we live in different places, Canada/UK and Sweden.
Do you think your sound is just a mix of your previous experiences or there is something new?
I think its a combination of all the different experiences and musicality combined with something new. It feels fresh bu at the same time it feels old!
What’s about your first Ep “Into the Blackness”?
We had done 5 tracks and we just took the ones we felt for at the time, and worked on them , and recorded them. Go t really cool, so we felt we should continue and make a full length album.
“Kingdom of Decay” was released on September 11th, is there a connection between the title and the Twin Towers attack anniversary? I think that day begun the decay of the USA kingdom and the world is changed…
No connection whatever, just turned out that way. Yes, the world is crazy, Kingdom Of Decay!
Due your past experiences, did you feel a lot of pressure during the recording sessions?
No not at all, we just do what we like doing, and that is to play Death metal. We do this for ourselves, and if anyone like it thats just a bonus.
Howare born these songs? You live in different Countries, was the distance a problem?
Well, I do the riffing and a pre-recording of the tracks with basic EZ-drummer drums. Then me and Linus work together with the arrangement and he add his solos and have great ideas. Then Andy record the drums the way he feels it should be. Gord doing the lyrics and record vocals, and Tobias record the bass. The track can be altered in the whole process with everyone doing their inputs. So i’ll say that we all are the songwriters. All parts contribute with their expertise and experience.
I love the doomish parts of your tracks, how much important is the dark feeling for you songs?
Very important of course. We wanna create a feeling that represent the song in the best way.
Your favorite tracks on the album?
At the moment I have ”The White Horse Of Pestilence” as my favorite. But tomorrow it could be another track he he 🙂
The will be a video single?
Don’t really know. We’ve been talking about doing a video. We must solve the different locations problem first.
