I giovanissimi francesi Skelethal stanno facendo passi da gigante: dopo un buon esordio, tornano quest’anno con un secondo album, “Unveiling the Threshold” (Hells Headbangers Records \ All Noir), decisamente più convincente! Anche se dediti a un old school death metal, siamo certi che il futuro del genere da noi tanto amato è nelle loro mani.

Benvenuto, Gui! Il tuo debutto, “Of the Depths …”, è stato un grande album, ma il nuovo è molto meglio. Suoni migliori e songwriting più convincente, sei d’accordo?
Ciao! Grazie per il tuo ottimo feedback! Ovviamente sono d’accordo con te per molte ragioni e hai detto le due principali. Siamo tutti molto entusiasti di questo nuovo album. Il nuovo materiale è decisamente più conciso, molto più violento e più personale. La maggior parte delle canzoni sono in-your-face e Greg Wilkinson degli studi Earhammer ci ha garantito il miglior suono che abbiamo mai avuto. La presenza di nuovi membri ha portato nuove idee e la musicalità e le influenze di ogni componente sono state prese in considerazione per la scrittura delle canzoni. È di gran lunga la migliore uscita degli Skelethal.

“Unveiling the Threshold” è decisamente un ritorno alle radici del death metal svedese, perché hai scelto questo sound old school?
Fin dall’inizio della band, il death metal svedese è sempre stato la nostra principale influenza, abbiamo sempre amato il suono e la musica dei pionieri e ci sentiamo a nostro agio seguendo questo percorso. È affascinante vedere come le vecchie band svedesi abbiano creato uno stile proprio all’interno del genere death metal. Erano molto giovani ma allo stesso tempo molto maturi nella scrittura delle canzoni. Non proviamo a riprodurlo esattamente, ma ci piace che le persone identifichino chiaramente questa grande influenza.

Come ti ha aiutato a lavorare con Greg Wilkinson per raggiungere i tuoi obiettivi?
Ci terrei a dire che per il primo album “Of the Depths…” abbiamo fatto tutto noi: registrazione, missaggio, masterizzazione, e questo è stato un grosso errore. Non volevo assolutamente ottenere di nuovo lo stesso suono, quindi abbiamo deciso di registrare le tracce da soli e affidare mix e master a un professionista. Abbiamo lavorato duramente sulla registrazione di ogni strumento per avere subito il suono che volevamo e per inviare buone tracce a Greg. Abbiamo dedicato molto tempo a tutte le impostazioni, al posizionamento dei microfoni e abbiamo cercato di essere il più fedeli possibile nel nostro modo di suonare. Tutto su questo album è naturale, non c’è trigger, tutto è stato registrato alla vecchia maniera con i microfoni. Il nostro obiettivo era quello di avere un suono potente ma sporco, un qualcosa che possiamo riprodurre sul palco con la nostra attrezzatura. Siamo contenti del risultato, poiché Greg ha ottenuto un’ottima resa senza alterare il nostro suono.

C’è qualcosa di nuovo nel vostro suond? Qualcosa di Skelethal al 100%?
Molte cose sono cambiate per questo album. Sin dall’inizio, essere un quartetto ha cambiato molte cose. Tutti i membri hanno portato idee per migliorare il risultato. Personalmente, ho variato il mio modo di scrivere le canzoni per adeguarlo allo stile e alle abilità di batteria di Lorenzo, che sono fantastiche. Penso davvero che le nuove canzoni siano più forti rispetto a quelle dell’album precedente, molto più schiette e aggressive, anche scritte e suonate meglio. Mescolando più influenze penso anche che questo nuovo album sia più personale dei nostri dischi precedenti.

Potresti presentare i nuovi membri?
Lucas alla chitarra, suona anche nei Mortal Sceptre (thrash); Julien al basso, suona anche nei Projects for Bastards (grind); Lorenzo alla batteria, suona anche negli Schizophrenia (thrash) e Bütcher (speed).

I nuovi membri sono stati coinvolti nella scrittura delle canzoni?
Lucas ha scritto i riff di chitarra per una canzone nella sua interezza (“Adorned with the Black Vertebra”) e collaborato per un’altra (“Repulsive Recollections”). Ho indicato le loro parti a Julien e Lorenzo, ma erano liberi di cambiarle per adattarla al loro modo di suonare. Le idee di ogni membro sono state prese in considerazione per migliorare le canzoni.

Quale soglia vorresti svelare con questo album?
Questa “soglia” può essere vista sulla fantastica copertina che Eliran Kantor ha dipinto per noi. Si riferisce a un portale che si apre su un’altra dimensione. Tu solo hai l’opportunità di scegliere se attraversarla o aspettare per vedere cosa ne esce. I testi degli Skelethal sono fortemente influenzati dall’universo di Lovecraft e anche da molti altri scrittori di fantascienza / horror. Per l’artwork dell’album abbiamo chiesto a Eliran di dipingere un paesaggio tormentato con monumenti monolitici che emergono da un mare in ebollizione e un portale che si apre nel cielo. I testi degli Skelethal non riguardano solo la morte o cose cruente, ci piace parlare di forze sconosciute, dimensioni lontane, viaggi cosmici. La cosa più interessante della morte è ciò che viene dopo!

I primi due singoli dell’album sono “Sidereal Lifespan” e “Repulsive Recollections”, perché hai scelto queste canzoni?
“Sidereal Lifespan” è la prima canzone dell’album e, secondo me, una grande apertura. Facile da ricordare con una struttura di canzone classica. Abbiamo pensato che potesse essere una buona canzone per presentare l’album. Abbiamo scelto “Repulsive Recollections” per la clip perché è una canzone che abbiamo già suonato molte volte sul palco, quindi ci sentivamo a nostro agio.

È un grande momento per la scena metal francese, ci sono grandi band. In che modo il successo di Gojira, Alcest, Gorod, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord e Swart Crown aiuta il movimento underground del tuo paese?
Non mi piacciono molto queste band e non so se abbiano davvero aiutato il movimento underground in Francia dato che sono band piuttosto grandi, non proprio underground ai miei occhi.

The young French death metal band Skelethal are making great strides: after a good debut, they are back this year with a second album, “Unveiling the Threshold” (Hells Headbangers Records \ All Noir), much better! Despite they are dedicated to an old school death metal, we are sure that the future of the genre we love so much is in their young hands.

Welcome, Gui! Your debut, “Of the Depths…”, was a great album, but the new one is better. Better sounds and better songwriting, are you agree?
Hello! Thanks for your great feedback! I of course agree for a lot of reason and you told the two main. We are all very thrilled with this new album. New material is definitely tighter, much more violent and more personal. Most of the songs are in-your-face and Greg Wilkinson from Earhammer studios also gave us the best sound we ever had. Having new members brought new ideas and the musicianship and influences of every member were taken into account for the song writing. It’s Skelethal’s best release by far.

“Unveiling the Threshold” is definitely back to the roots of Swedish death metal, why did you choose this old school sound?
Since the beginning of the band, Swedish death Metal has always been ou main influence, we’ve always loved the sound and the music of the pionners and we feel confortable following this path.
It’s fascinating to see how old bands from Sweden created a proper style inside the death metal genre. They were really young but in the same time really mature in the songwriting. We don’t try to reproduce it exactly but like to people identify clearly this big influence.

How did help you to work with Greg Wilkinson to reach your goals?
At first it’s important to mention that for the first album “Of the Depths…” we did the whole recording, mixing, mastering by ourselves and that was a big mistake. I absolutely didn’t want to get the same sound so we decided to only record the tracks ourselves and get a mix/master from a professional. We worked hard on the recording of each instrument to have the sound we wanted straight away and to send good tracks to Greg to avoid him any struggles. We spent a lot of time on all the settings, on the microphones placement and tried to be as tight as possible in our playing. Everything on this album is natural there is no trigger, everything was recorded the old way with microphones. Our aim was to have a powerful yet filthy sound and a something we can reach on stage with our gear. We are glad with the result, since Greg had a great result without altering our sound.

Is there something new in your sounds? Something 100% Skelethal?
A lot of things changed for this album. At first being a quartet changed a lot of thing. All the members brought ideas to improve the result. I personally adapted my way of writing the songs order to fit with Lorenzo’s drumming style and skills which are awesome. I really think that the new songs are stronger than on the previous album, much more in-your-face and aggressive, also better written and played. By mixing more influences I also think that this new album is more personal than our previous records.

Could you introduce the new members?
Lucas on guitar, he also plays in Mortal Scepter (thrash); Julien at the bass he also plays in Projects for Bastards (grind); Lorenzo on the drums, he aslo plays in Schizophrenia (thrash) and Bütcher (speed)

Were the new members involved in the songwriting?
Lucas wrote the guitar riffs for one song in its entirety (“Adorned with the Black Vertebra”) and we collaborate for an other (“Repulsive Recollections”). I gave their parts to Julien and Lorenzo but they were free to change it to make it fit with their playing. Every muscisian’s ideas were taken into account to improve the songs.

Which threshold would you like to unveiled with this album?
This ‘threshold’ can be seen on the fantastic cover art Eliran Kantor painted for us. It refers to a portal opening to an other dimension. Only yourself has the choice to cross it or to wait and see what comes from it. Skelethal lyrics are strongly tainted with Lovecraft universe and also many other sci-fi / horror writers. For this album artwork we asked Eliran to paint a tormented landscape with monolithic monuments emerging from the boiling sea and a portal opening in the sky. Skelethal lyrics are not only about death or gory things, we like to speak about unknown forces, foreign dimensions, cosmic voyages. The most interesting thing in death is what comes after ?

The first two single from the album are “Sidereal Lifespan” and “Repulsive Recollections”, why did you chose these songs?
“Sidereal Lifespan” is the first song of the album and a great opener in my opinion. Easy to remember with a classic song structure. We though it could be a good song to present the album.
We choose “Repulsive Recollections” for the clip because it’s a song we’ve already played many times on stage, so we were comfortable with playing it.

Is a great moment for French metal scene, there are great bands. How does the success of Gojira, Alcest, Gorod, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord and Swart Crown help the underground movement of your country?
I’m not really into this bands and don’t know if they really helped the underground movement in France since they are quite big bands, not really underground in my eyes.
