NervoChaos – All colors of darkness

Dopo l’album celebrativo, “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations”, per il 25° anniversario della band nel 2021, il quintetto di San Paolo NervoChaos torna quest’anno con il nuovo disco, il decimo della carriera, “All Colors Of Darkness” (Emanzipation Productions). Undici canzoni di death metal ruvido e nero come la pece.

Ciao Edu (Lane, batteria), grazie per averci dedicato del tempo oggi. Come va?
Salve! Qui tutto è sotto controllo. Grazie mille per l’opportunità e il supporto.

Il vostro nuovo album, “All Colors of Darkness”, è finalmente uscito! Dopo 25 anni di carriera, è stato relativamente facile trovare l’ispirazione o è stato un album difficile da realizzare?
Sai, è il nostro primo album per Emanzipation Prod. e l’uscita mondiale è avvenuta proprio oggi, quindi ne siamo molto contenti! Non è stato affatto difficile o problematico registrare questo nuovo album. Il nostro processo di scrittura è continuo e c’è ancora molta ispirazione, soprattutto in considerazione di come vanno le cose oggigiorno nel mondo in cui viviamo.

Durante la pandemia di Covid-19 avete pubblicato due album, “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations” e “All Colors of Darkness”, quanto è difficile promuovere un disco in questi giorni?
Sono stati due anni terribili, super duri, per noi e credo anche per tutti, ma fortunatamente abbiamo il nostro studio, quindi siamo riusciti a sfruttare al meglio il nostro tempo durante questi due anni di pandemia. “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations” è stato pubblicato nel novembre 2021 e l’abbiamo fatto solo per celebrare il 25° anniversario della band. Ecco perché abbiamo scelto di ri-registrare un album, in stile ‘best of’, ma concentrandoci sui primi quattro dischi della band, e abbiamo anche colto l’occasione per presentare la nuova formazione. Crediamo che quest’anno (2022) saremo in grado di andare in tour ed è per questo che è stato pubblicato il nostro ultimo album, “All Colors of Darkness”. Per quanto riguarda la parte promozionale durante la pandemia, non potendo fare spettacoli/tour, abbiamo realizzato diversi podcast e streaming, oltre a diverse interviste scritte. È così che abbiamo gestito la promozione in questi giorni difficili.

Alcune canzoni incluse in “All Colors of Darkness” provengono dalle sessioni di “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations”?
No. Tutte sessioni diverse, ma con lo stesso produttore, lo stesso tecnico del suono, la stessa persona che ha curato il mix e il processo di masterizzazione, lo stesso studio e, ultimo ma non meno importante, la stessa formazione! Hahaha.

Finora avete realizzato quattro singoli: “Wage War On The Gods”, “Golden Goblet Of Fornication”, “Beyond The Astral” e “Dragged to Hell”. “Dragged To Hell” mostra il lato più eclettico dei NervoChaos, pensi che questa canzone possa rappresentare il futuro della band?
Cerchiamo sempre di evolverci, come musicisti e come band, ma ci basiamo sempre sulla nostra proposta iniziale, concentrandoci sul nostro sound. Non facciamo qualcosa con l’intenzione di piacere a persone diverse da noi stessi. Come band, siamo sicuramente più maturi, con molta più esperienza, una nuova formazione, e abbiamo anche avuto molto tempo per suonare tutte queste canzoni e perfezionare tutto come volevamo e come ci sembrava giusto. La canzone “Dragged to Hell”, ad esempio, ha un po’ più di melodie, alcune voci pulite e anche alcuni cambi di tempo, quindi non penso che sia così diversa dalle cose che stavamo facendo prima, si tratta semplicemente di un’evoluzione naturale ed è la conseguenza di come ci sentivamo in quel momento, ma sempre NervoChaos. Penso che le due cover nell’album mostrino molto di più il lato eclettico della band.

Con questo album i NervoChaos tagliano il traguardo del decimo album in studio, ci avresti mai scommesso all’inizio della tua carriera?
Nemmeno nei miei sogni più sfrenati! Tutto scorre via così velocemente, sembra ieri che abbiamo fondato la band… e ora, che ho avuto il tempo di fermarmi, ho potuto vedere quanto abbiamo realizzato e anche tutto quello che abbiamo passato… è stata una corsa fantastica che ha appena completato i suoi primi 25 anni e tutto quello che posso dire è che siamo pronti per fare molto di più!

Puoi raccontarmi uno o due momenti di questo lungo viaggio che ti rendono orgoglioso delal tua band?
Ogni volta che pubblichiamo un album, o completiamo un tour, o finiamo uno spettacolo, sono orgoglioso della band, perché amiamo quello che facciamo e facciamo quello che amiamo!

Secondo te il non essere europeo o americano ha penalizzato la tua carriera?
Non credo.

Promuoverete sul palco il nuovo album?
Di sicuro! Speriamo che tutto vada bene e che tutte le band possano tornare sul palco e anche in tour. Quindi, a partire da metà aprile, abbiamo programmato un tour europeo di quattro settimane, poco dopo ne faremo uno in America Latina e poi due settimane in Brasile, chiudendo così la nostra prima metà dell’anno. Stiamo già lavorando ad altri tour per la seconda metà di quest’anno, quindi spero di vedervi presto!

After the celebration album “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations” for the band’s 25th anniversary in 2021, the São Paulo five-piece NervoChaos is back this year with the new record, the tenth, “All Colors Of Darkness” (Emanzipation Productions). Eleven raw and pitch-black death metal songs.

Hey Edu (Lane, drums), thanks for taking the time to talk with us. How are you doing today?
Hail! Here everything is under control. Thank you so much for the opportunity and support.

Your new album, “All Colors of Darkness”, is out at last!  After 25 years of carrier, was it relatively easy to find that inspiration again or was this a difficult album to make?
You know, it’s our first album thru Emanzipation Prod. and the worldwide release was today, so we are very happy with it! It was not difficult or problematic at all to record this new album. Our songwriting process is continuous and there is still plenty of inspiration, especially with the way things are nowadays in the world that we live in.

During the Covid-19 pandemic you released two albums, “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations”  and “All Colors of Darkness”, how hard is it to promote an album during  these strange days?
It was two terrible, super hard, years for us and I believe for everyone too, but luckily we have our own studio, so we managed to use our time a lot during these two pandemic years. “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations” was released in November 2021 and we just did it to celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary. That’s why we chose to make a re-recording album, a ‘best of’ style, but with focus on the band’s first four albums, and we also took the opportunity to present the band’s new line-up. We believe that this year (2022) we will be able to go out on tour and that’s why our newest album, “All Colors of Darkness”, was released. Regarding the promotional part during the pandemic, as we were unable to do shows/tours, we have made several podcasts and streamings during this period, in addition to several written interviews as well. That’s how we handled the promotion during these weird days. 

Some songs included in “All Colors of Darkness” are from the “Dug Up… Diabolical Reincarnations” sessions?
No. All different sessions, but with the same producer, same sound engineer, same person did the mix and master process, same studio, and last but not least, same band line-up haha.

You’ve made four singles so far: “Wage War On The Gods”, “Golden Goblet Of Fornication”, “Beyond The Astral” and “Dragged to Hell”. “Dragged To Hell” shows Nervochaos’ most eclectic side. Do you think this song could represent the future of the band?
I believe that we are always looking to evolve, as musicians and as a band, but we are always based on our initial proposal and focused on our own sound. We don’t do something with the intention of pleasing people other than ourselves. As a band, we are certainly more mature, with far more experience, new line-up, and we also had a lot of time to jam all these songs and polish everything as we wanted and as it felt right. The song “Dragged to Hell” for example, has a bit more melodies, some clean vocals and also some tempo changes, so I don’t think it’s that different from the things we were doing earlier, just a natural evolution and how we felt at that moment, but still NervoChaos. I think that the two cover songs on the album shows way more the most eclectic side of the band. 

With this album NervoChaos cross the finish line of the tenth studio album, would you have ever bet on it at the beginning of your career?
Not even in my wildest dreams! Everything goes by so fast, it all seems like yesterday that we started the band… and now that I had time to stop and I could see how much we’ve accomplished and everything we’ve been through too…it has been an amazing ride that just completed 25 years and all I can say is that we’re ready for so much more!

Can you name one or two moments from this long journey that make you proud of this band?
Whenever we release an album, or complete a tour, or finish a show, I feel proud of the band, because we love what we do and we do what we love! 

In your opinion, not being European or American has penalized your career?
I don’t think so. 

Will you promote on stage the new album?
For sure! We hope that everything goes well and that all bands can return to the stage and to touring as well. So starting in mid-April, we have scheduled a four-week European tour, shortly after that we will do a Latin American tour and then a two-week tour in Brazil, thus closing our first half of the year. We are also already working on more tours for the second half of this year, so I hope to see you all again soon!
