Buone e cattive notizie per i fan dei Cirith Ungol. La gioia di avere finalmente nelle nostre mani il nuovo album “Dark Parade” (Metal Blade) è stata spazzata via dal comunicato stampa che annunciava la fine dell’attività live della band americana nel 2024… Di questo ed altro abbiamo parlato con Robert Garven e Tim Baker…
Ciao ragazzi, quando avete capito che era giunto il momento di pubblicare un nuovo album dei Cirith Ungol?
Rob: Quando ci siamo riuniti, è stato qualcosa a cui abbiamo sempre pensato, così ci siamo messi subito a scrivere musica, pubblicando il singolo “Witch’s Game” per un film ancora inedito, “The Planet of Doom”. Questo film, come molte altre cose durante la pandemia, ha subito un rallentamento ma è ancora in lavorazione e se ne possono seguire i progressi su Instagram. Sulla scia di tutto questo abbiamo iniziato a scrivere quello che sarebbe diventato il nostro quinto album in studio, “Forever Black”. Ha ricevuto molte recensioni positive da alcune riviste e siti web che lo hanno definito l’album heavy metal numero uno del 2020! Dopo la pubblicazione di quell’album, abbiamo immediatamente iniziato a lavorare al nostro sesto disco in studio, “Dark Parade”.
Questa formazione è immutata dal 2016, quanto aiuta avere una squadra stabile per il successo di un album?
Rob: La formazione è stata stabile fino a poco tempo fa, quando ci siamo separati dal chitarrista Jim Barraza, che aveva suonato con noi per la prima volta sul nostro album “Paradise Lost” nel 1991, per motivi di salute. La formazione attuale dovrebbe restare immutata fino a quando la band smetterà di andare in tournée alla fine del 2024, abbiamo ancora tre membri originali tra cui Greg e me, che abbiamo fondato la band nel 1971 con Jerry Fogle.
I pezzi di “Dark Parade” erano già stati scritti, magari in fase embrionale, quando avete pubblicato “Half Past Human”?
Rob: Abbiamo iniziato a scrivere “Dark Parade” subito dopo l’uscita di “Forever Black” nel 2020, che ironicamente è stato pubblicato quasi lo stesso giorno in cui è scoppiata la pandemia. “Half Past Human” è stato pubblicato per lasciare un “segnalibro” tra i nostri album in studio. Molti ci avevano chiesto di ripescare parte del nostro materiale precedente e di registrarlo nuovamente. Eravamo totalmente contrari a quell’idea, speravamo di pubblicare un altro album completo, ma con il progredire della pandemia sembrava il momento perfetto per fare qualcosa del genere. Abbiamo deciso di dare nuova vita ad alcune canzoni con un tema comune, e di pomparle e renderle ancora più pesanti! Molti hanno frainteso cosa sia questo EP, non si tratta di brani nuovi, ma di parte del nostro primo materiale scritto dal 1975 al 1977! Penso che il risultato sia stato spettacolare e dimostra che non è cambiato molto nella band in tutti questi anni!
Questo album è nato sotto l’influenza di H.P. Lovecraft. Potresti darmi una percentuale di quanto le vostre composizioni sono influenzate dall’amore per la musica e quanto da quello per la letteratura? 50% e 50%?
Rob: Ah, l’influenza di H.P. Lovecraft è soprattutto mia! Penso che il 50% – 50% sia probabilmente vicina come stima, ma negli ultimi anni gran parte delle nostre influenze provengono dall’oscurità vorticosa emanata dai fatti che accadono intorno a noi. Molte persone pensano erroneamente che, poiché abbiamo preso il nostro nome dal libro, siamo stati/siamo eccessivamente influenzati dal “Signore degli Anelli”, o che fondamentale per noi sia la serie di Elric, che abbiamo immortalato nelle copertine dei nostri album. La verità è che queste incredibili opere d’arte ci hanno influenzato, ma non sono mai state intese come qualcosa che ci definisse come band o etichettasse la nostra musica! Erano solo immagini con cui sentivamo qualcosa in comune. Anche il nostro ultimo album presenta in copertina un capolavoro di Michael Whelan, “Elric and the Sinking City”! E’ stato utilizzato per il layout della copertina dell’album, fronte e retro, e anche per il poster! Io ho creato il layout per i primi tre album e per “Half Past Human”!
È questo il vostro album più pessimista?
Rob: Penso che questo sia una sorta di continuazione del nostro ultimo album “Forever Black”, ma in realtà i nostri ultimi tre album, “Paradise Lost”, “Forever Black” e anche “Dark Parade” presentano la visione decadente dell’umanità che ha Tim, con il primo che contiene canzoni anche su altri temi.
Tim: Il nome “Dark Parade” evoca l’attuale scottante visione dei Cirith Ungol sull’infinita dissolvenza dell’uomo nel “Doom”. Racconti di incubo, di dolore, sofferenza e corruzione: una parata oscura nell’abisso…
A che punto della tua carriera arriva questo album? Quanto vi sentite vicino alla perfezione?
Rob: Il nostro obiettivo da quando ci siamo formati dalla materia senza nome dell’universo, è stato quello di creare il metal più pesante conosciuto dall’uomo “A Churning Maelstrom of Metal Chaos Descending!”, e con ogni album abbiamo cercato di affinare quella nobile idea, forgiando metallo pesante e vero. Pensiamo che quest’ultima versione sia quanto di più vicino a questo obiettivo, ma lasceremo che siano i nostri ascoltatori a decidere da soli se ci siamo riusciti.
Quando siete in tour vi capita di sentire i tuoi fan fare paragoni tra la prima fase della tua storia discografica (1981-86) e la seconda (2020-23)?
Rob: Tutti ne parlano da quando ci siamo riuniti, ma dopo aver letto tutte le recensioni, e le ho lette quasi tutte, sembra che l’idea unanime sia che siamo ancora la stessa band degli inizi. Anni ’80, il che probabilmente è vero perché scriviamo ancora musica come se fossimo ancora negli anni ’80! Continuiamo a scrivere e suonare musica basandoci sulla nostra convinzione che il vero metal sia quello in cui siamo cresciuti, che ha radici nel tempo, ed è la forma principale del metal. Questo metallo ci sta nel cuore, e il nostro obiettivo è issare il true metal sopra le nostre teste, come un faro nell’oscurità affinché tutti possano vederlo.
Verrete in tournée qui in Europa?
Rob: Naturalmente, la maggior parte dei nostri fan è in Europa e lo è da quando la band ha pubblicato per la prima volta “Frost & Fire” nel 1981. Il nostro primo spettacolo l’anno prossimo sarà da headliner al fantastico festival greco “Up the Hammers”, poi altri show ancora da annunciare! Dato che il prossimo anno sarà l’ultimo anno in cui la band suonerà dal vivo, proveremo a fare tutto il possibile e a dare un calcio a qualche culo pesante prima di sprofondare ancora una volta sotto il mare come l’antico dio, dormiente sino al tramonto, Cthulhu. Le stelle si si stanno realineando.
Quali altre battaglie attendono Cirith Ungol nel prossimo futuro?
Rob: Continueremo a portare ancora avanti la nostra battaglia originaria contro il falso metal!

Good news and bad news for Cirith Ungol fans. The joy of finally having the new album “Dark Parade” (Metal Blade) in our hands was swept away by the press release about the stop of the American band’s live activity in 2024… We talked about this and more with Robert Garven and Tim Baker…
Hi guys, when did you understand that was the time release a new album under the moniker Cirith Ungol?
Rob: As soon as we reunited it was something that we were thinking about, we started writing music right away, releasing the single “Witch’s Game” for a still unreleased movie “The Planet of Doom”. This movie like many other things during the pandemic slowed down but it’s still in progress and you can follow that progress on Instagram. On the heels of that we started writing what would become our fifth studio album, “Forever Black”. It received many good reviews with some magazines and websites calling it the number one heavy-metal album 2020! After that album was released, we instantly started working on our six studio album “Dark Parade”.
This lineup is now stable in 2016, how much does having a stable team help for the success of an album?
Rob: The lineup was stable until recently, when we parted ways with guitarist Jim Barraza, who first played on our album “Paradise Lost” in 1991 due to health reasons. The current lineup should last until the band stops touring at the end of 2024, we still have three original members including Greg and I, who founded the band in 1971 with Jerry Fogle.
The pieces of “Dark Parade” had already been written, perhaps in the embryonic stage, when did you publish “Half Past Human”?
Rob: We started writing “Dark Parade” soon after the release of “Forever Black” in 2020, which ironically was released almost on the same day that the pandemic hit . “Half Past Human” was released to leave a bookmark between our full length studio albums. Many had asked us to dig up some of our earlier material, and rerecord it. We were totally against that idea, hoping to put out another full length album, but as the pandemic wore on it seemed the perfect time to do something like this. We decided to breathe new life into a few songs with a similar “beast” like theme, and really pump them up and make them extra heavy! Many have misunderstood what this EP is, these are not new songs, but some of our earliest material written from 1975 to 1977! I think it came out spectacular and it shows not much has changed in the band over all these years!
This album was born under the influence of H.P. Lovecraft. Could you give me a percentage of how much your compositions are influenced by your love for music and by your love for literature? 50% and 50%?
Rob: Ha, that H.P. Lovecraft influence is mostly me! I think 50% – 50% is probably close but in recent years much of our influences has come from the swirling darkness that’s happening all around us. Many people mistakenly feel that because we took our name from the books that we were/are overly influenced by the “Lord of the Rings”, or that matter the Elric series we featured on our album covers. The truth is these incredible works of art influenced us, but were never intended to be something that defined us as a band or our music! It was just imagery we felt something in common with. Once again our latest album features another masterpiece by Michael Whelan, “Elric and the Sinking City”! The band let create the layout of the album cover, front and back , and the poster again! I created the layout for the first three albums and “Half Past Human”!
Is this your most pessimistic album?
Rob: I think this as a continuation of her last album “Forever Black”, but actually our last three albums, “Paradise Lost”, “Forever Black”, and now “Dark Parade” feature Tim’s vision of the downfall of mankind on side two, with side one having songs with other various themes.
Tim: The name “Dark Parade” conjures up the latest searing entry in Cirith Ungol’s ongoing chronicle of man’s never ending fade into Doom. Nightmare tales of pain, suffering and corruption – a Dark Parade into the abyss…
At what point in your career does this album come? How close to perfection do you feel?
Rob: Our goal since we were formed from the nameless stuff of the universe, was to create the heaviest metal known to man “A Churning Maelstrom of Metal Chaos Descending!”, and with each album we have tried to refine that noble idea, forging metal that is strong and true. We think this latest release is the closest we have come to that goal, but we will leave that up to our listeners to decide for themselves if we have succeeded.
When you are on tour do you happen to hear your fans making comparisons between the first phase of your recording history (1981-86) and the second one (2020-23)?
Rob: Everyone has talked about that since we reunited, but after reading all the reviews of our music, and I’ve read almost every one of them, it seems like the consensus is that we are still the same band that we were in the 1980s, which is probably accurate because we’re still writing music as if we were still in the 1980’s! We still writing and playing music based on our belief that it is the True Metal that we grew up on, stretching back through time, is the dominant form of metal. This metal which we hold dear, and our objective is to hoist this true metal above our heads, like a beacon in the darkness for all to see.
Will you come on tour here in Europe?
Rob: Of course, the majority of our fans are in Europe and have been since the band first released “Frost & Fire” in 1981. Our first show next year is headlining the fantastic Greek Festival Up the Hammers, with many more shows yet to be announced! Since the next year is the last year the band will be playing live, we’re going to try to pull out all the stops, and kick some major ass before we sink beneath the sea once again like the elder god Cthulhu, slumbering until the stars realign.
What other battles await Cirith Ungol in the near future?
Rob: We are still fighting the original battle against false metal!

Rob: Thank you so much. The real question is will we play in Italy before the band slips behind the veil. As most know I’m a lover of everything Italian, especially Ferrari’s!
