I Leaves’ Eyes, per la prima volta orfani dello storico membro Tosso, hanno da qualche mese rilasciato il nuovo album “Myths of Fate” (AFM Records), un concentrato di metal epico e sinfonico. E’ stato un gentilissimo Alexander Krull a rispondere alle nostre domande…
Bentornato su Il Raglio del Mulo Alex , il vostro nuovo album “Myths of Fate” è uscito lo scorso 22 marzo, è la prima pubblicazione senza la presenza di Tosso. Com’è stato lavorare senza di lui?
Tosso è stato mio compagno di band dal 1994 e siamo ancora grandi amici! Parliamo anche molto della band e ci incontriamo regolarmente. Quando stavamo iniziando a scrivere “Myths of Fate” era ancora con noi, ma già per la realizzazione di “Okkult”, l’ultimo album della trilogia degli Atrocity, Tosso ha collaborato poco quanto niente, contribuendo giusto con uno o due riff di chitarra. E’ stata già quella una situazione nuova, dopo così tanto tempo insieme, soprattutto per me, dato che siamo molto amici. A volte le cose cambiano, e questo può risultare insolito e un po’ triste ma può essere anche rinfrescante allo stesso tempo. Abbiamo lavorato benissimo in team per “Myths of Fate” e i migliori complimenti sono arrivati dallo stesso Tosso, che ha gradito i nuovi album dei Leaves’ Eyes e degli Atrocity.
Qual è stato il contributo di Luc al nuovo album? Il suo stile ha influenzato il vostro sound in qualche modo?
Luc era entrato da troppo poco tempo nella band per dare un contributo, però abbiamo lavorato insieme su alcune idee che sono ancora da pubblicare. È fantastico avere Luc nei Leaves’ Eyes, stiamo lavorando a stretto contatto per ogni genere di cosa che riguardi la band, come per le produzioni video.
Perché il mito del Destino ha avuto in passato, come anche oggi, un certo fascino sull’umanità?
La mitologia norrena, con il suo il lato magico e misterioso, ha sempre avuto un forte impatto e fascino sulle persone. Con i Leaves’ Eyes cui vogliamo invitare i nostri fan a unirsi a noi nel mantenere vive queste straordinarie avventure attraverso la musica.
Sei fatalista o credi che ogni uomo costruisca le proprie fortune?
Meglio alzarsi e tenere ben stretta la nostra vita nelle nostre mani, piuttosto che sedersi ad aspettare cosa accade.
Confesso che quando ho letto “Who Wants To Live Forever” nella tracklist, ho pensato ad una cover della famosa canzone dei Queen. In qualche modo, hai voluto rendere omaggio a quel brano scegliendo quel titolo?
In realtà è del tutto scollegato dal classico dei Queen, semplicemente il titolo si adatta perfettamente alla canzone e al testo. Adoro la storia di fondo: Idunn nutre gli antichi dei con mele d’oro per mantenere la loro eterna giovinezza, questi senza di lei invecchierebbero come dei semplici mortali.
“Who Wants To Live Forever” è una canzone tratta dalla colonna sonora di “Highlander”, se non sbaglio anche voi potete vantare “Viking Spirit (Original Score)” nella vostra discografia. Come à stato lavorare su una colonna sonora e quanto questa esperienza vi ha aiutato nella scrittura di “Myths of Fate”?
Mentre stavamo girando il film “Viking Spirit”, che documenta il moderno stile di vita vichingo, sapevo che avremmo avuto bisogno di una colonna sonora cinematografica epica. Oltre ad inserire alcune canzoni dei Leaves’ Eyes, abbiamo lavorato con il compositore orchestrale americano Jonah Weingarten, che ha fatto un ottimo lavoro. E, infatti, in seguito abbiamo riarrangiato con lui due canzoni, che ha trasformato in inni metal per i Leaves’ Eyes. Per questo collaboreremo anche sul nuovo album.
Com’è stato lavorare con il talentuoso statunitense Jonah Weingarten?
È stato davvero fantastico lavorare con Jonah, è un mio amico, abbiamo collaborato anche per gli Atrocity e ovviamente per i Catalyst Crime. Jonah è il tastierista dei Catalyst Crime e io sono il loro produttore.
Avete prodotto in totale cinque video musicali con la Mastersound Entertainment, girati in località impressionanti in Islanda, Germania e Polonia. Pensi che i singoli, e i relativi video, servano più a promuovere l’album, o, nell’era dello streaming, a diffondere il nome della band al fine di andare in tour o vendere merchandise?
Una parte del nostro sforzo creativo è finalizzato a visualizzare la nostra musica nelle nostre copertine, grazie anche alla grande collaborazione con Stefan Heilemann, ma anche le produzioni video hanno un ruolo importante. Per me, come regista di questi video, è molto importante fornire un’ottima visione di ciò di cui parla la musica. Mi piace realizzare video anche per altri band. Sono davvero felice che abbiamo ricevuto per i nostri video feedback fantastici da tanti fan, grazie a tutti per il supporto!
Avete già pianificato qualche data per i prossimi mesi?
Siamo stati in tournée in tutta Europa a marzo/aprile e sì, suoneremo altri concerti e alcuni tour sono già previsti per il 2025! Spero di vedervi tutti ai nostri concerti!

Welcome back to Il Raglio del Mulo, Alex, your new album “Myths of Fate” war released on March 22nd, the first without the presence of Tosso. What was it like working without him?
Tosso was my band mate since 1994 and we are still best friends! We talk a lot also about the band and meet regulary. When we were starting to write “Myths of Fate” we had done the last “Okkult” record of the Atrocity album trilogy which was also done without Tosso except 1-2 guitar riffs. That was already a new situation after such a long time, especially for me as we are very close friends. Sometimes things are changing, and this can be unusual and a bit sad but it can be refreshing at the same time. We had a great working team for “Myths of Fate” and the best compliments came from Tosso himself as he likes both of the new albums of Leaves’ Eyes and Atrocity.
What was Luc’s contribution to the new album? Has his style influenced your sound in any way?
Luc was just coming into the band and we worked on some ideas together which are still to be released. It’s great to have Luc in Leaves’ Eyes and we are working close with all kind of band stuff like helping me with the video productions.
Why has the myth of Fate always had a certain appeal for humanity in the past, but also today?
Alex: The Norse Mythology and its’ magical and mysterious side has always been a strong impact and fascination for people. With Leaves’ Eyes we want to invite our fans to join us to experience these extraordinary adventures with our music.
Are you fatalists or do you believe that every man builds his own fortunes?
Better stand up and put your life in your own hands than to sit and wait what happens next.
I confess that when I read “Who Wants To Live Forever” in the tracklist, I immediately thought of a cover of the famous Queen song. In some way, did you want to pay tribute to that song by choosing that title?
Actually this happened disconected from the Queen classic as the title just fits the song and lyrics perfectly. I love the background story of the song about Idunn who feeds the old gods with golden apples to keep their eternal youth without her they fade to grey like mortals.
“Who Wants To Live Forever” is a song taken from the “Highlander” soundtrack, if I’m not mistaken you also have “Viking Spirit (Original Score)” in your discography. What was it like working on a soundtrack and how much did this experience help you in writing “Myths of Fate”?
We were filming the “Viking Spirit” film documentation about modern Viking Lifestyle within the re-enactment scene and the connection to Leaves’ Eyes music and Norse Mythology I had already in mind we would need an epic cinematic soundtrack for the movie. Besides some Leaves’ Eyes songs we worked with American orchestral composer Jonah Weingarten who did a great job. And indeed aftwerwards we rearranged two songs and turned them into Leaves’ Eyes metal songs and this worked great, so we continued the cooperation also on the new album.
How was working with the US soundtrack-multi-talent Jonah Weingarten?
It’s really great to work with Jonah, who is a friend of mine and we worked together also for Atrocity and of course Catalyst Crime. Jonah is keyboarder in Catalyst Crime and I’m their producer.
You produced a total of five music videos with Mastersound Entertainment, filmed on impressive locations in Iceland, Germany and Poland. Do you think that the songs, and therefore the videos, serve more to promote the album, or, in the streaming era, to spread the name of the band in order to go on tour or sell merchandise?
A part of the art we do is to visualize the music into our artworks where we have another great cooperation with Stefan Heilemann but also the video productions are a very big part of it. For me as film maker of these videos it’s very important to give a great visual background to what the music is about. I enjoy to make story telling videos also for other bands. I’m really happy that we got such fantastic feedbacks from so many fans to all of the videos, thank you for the support!
Have you already planned any dates for the next few months?
We have toured across Europe in March/April and yes we will play more concerts and some tours are planned for 2025 already! Hope to see you all at the live gigs!
