Abbiamo scambiato quattro chiacchiere con Tore André Helgemo, voce e chitarra dei norvegesi Stargazer, per parlare del nuovo album “Stone Cold Creature”, uscito per Mighty Music. Un lavoro che miscela tradizione hard rock, produzione moderna e un’attenzione particolare alla scrittura e agli arrangiamenti. Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato.

Benvenuto Tore André, e grazie per il tuo tempo! Il vostro nuovo album “Stone Cold Creature” è una massiccia dose di energia hard rock, pieno di riff, grandi hook e una produzione moderna. Per iniziare, come presentereste questo disco sia ai fan di lunga data che ai nuovi ascoltatori?
Questa dovrebbe essere la nostra miglior prova finora, soprattutto per come siamo cresciuti nella produzione. Per i fan di vecchia data abbiamo mantenuto la componente immediata e autentica della scrittura: le idee continuano a vivere di vita propria, e riconosci il sound degli Stargazer sin dalla prima battuta. Per i nuovi ascoltatori, questo album offre brani più brevi rispetto al passato, più diretti, forse anche più accessibili: melodia, ritornelli efficaci, riff micidiali con un groove pesante e un assolo di chitarra che ti fa esplodere la testa. Cos’altro si può chiedere?

Qual era il vostro obiettivo principale durante la scrittura e la registrazione di “Stone Cold Creature”? In che modo pensate rappresenti un passo avanti rispetto ai dischi precedenti?
Volevamo andare dritti al punto più che in passato, mantenendo comunque la magia. È soprattutto sul piano della produzione che siamo cresciuti, anche se prendiamo la scrittura molto sul serio. Non vogliamo mai riempitivi. Detto questo, ci sarà sempre chi considera una ballad o un brano più soft come un filler, ma per noi quelle parti sono importanti. Credo che abbiamo trovato un buon equilibrio: siamo una band hard rock, ma con attenzione a buone melodie e buone canzoni, indipendentemente dal livello di durezza.

Avete lavorato con Søren Andersen, noto per il suo lavoro con icone del rock classico ma anche per produzioni dal suono moderno. In che modo vi ha aiutato a trovare il giusto equilibrio tra la tradizione hard rock e un approccio più fresco e contemporaneo?
Lui ha sempre avuto il cuore in questo stile musicale, ce l’ha nel DNA, ed è estremamente professionale. Capisce subito dove vogliamo andare ascoltando ogni nuovo brano. Poi gira le manopole, trova i diamanti e li fa brillare come meritano. Essendo sempre in tour, che sia con Glenn Hughes o con i suoi progetti, è molto aggiornato su ciò che succede là fuori, e tutta questa esperienza la mette nel lavoro, a nostro vantaggio.

Le tastiere hanno un ruolo forte e dinamico nel vostro suono. Quanto sono importanti nel definire l’atmosfera e l’identità di “Stone Cold Creature”?
Bella osservazione. C’è un equilibrio sottile tra troppo e troppo poco. In questo disco, le tastiere hanno un ruolo più ampio che mai, ma senza esagerare. Sondre, il nostro tastierista, è ancora molto giovane, ma è un musicista dotato e creativo. La sua presenza è fondamentale, senza dubbio.

“Make A Deal With The Devil” è il singolo di lancio ed è un brano che colpisce. Qual è la storia dietro questa canzone e perché l’avete scelta come primo assaggio del nuovo disco?
Ottimo che lo pensi! Volevamo partire con un brano diretto in faccia, e “Make a Deal” era perfetta. Il testo è un po’ ironico, ma si basa anche su esperienze personali con persone che cercano di indicarti la “giusta via”. Falsi profeti, maghi e via dicendo. Insomma, può capitare che l’uomo con le corna abbia in realtà l’alternativa migliore.

Ci parli dei temi lirici presenti in “Stone Cold Creature”? C’è un filo conduttore oppure i brani esplorano storie e umori differenti?
Ogni brano ha una storia a sé, ma se ci fai caso puoi trovare temi che li collegano. Si parla di amore, perdita, malinconia, amicizia, disperazione, menefreghismo, speranza, oscurità e luce… tanto per citarne alcuni.

Avete condiviso il palco con leggende come Glenn Hughes, Saxon e Uriah Heep, e ora siete reduci dal Tons of Rock 2025. In che modo queste esperienze live vi hanno forgiato come band?
Abbiamo appena suonato al Tons of Rock, ed è stato fantastico. Anche se eravamo nelle fasce basse del bill, il nostro tendone era strapieno e il pubblico è impazzito. È stata una grande esperienza, abbiamo incontrato nuovi fan e ritrovato quelli di lunga data. Sono queste esperienze live a forgiare davvero la band. Ci uniscono come musicisti, e siamo sempre più affiatati. I fan possono aspettarsi una band compatta, con grandi canzoni, uno show divertente e tanto amore per ciò che facciamo.

Il nuovo album uscirà in vinile, CD e digitale. State notando un rinnovato interesse per i formati fisici tra il vostro pubblico?
Sì, sembra esserci una domanda crescente. Esauriamo rapidamente le copie fisiche ai concerti, anche perché il nostro pubblico sta crescendo. Il vinile, in particolare, è tornato di moda da qualche anno e continua a interessare sempre più persone.

Questa è la nostra ultima domanda – grazie ancora per il tuo tempo! Guardando avanti, cosa rappresenta “Stone Cold Creature” per gli Stargazer in questo momento della vostra carriera? E cosa ci sarà dopo l’uscita?
Grazie a voi per le belle parole e le domande interessanti! Credo che “Stone Cold Creature” sia l’album che ci farà conoscere a un pubblico più vasto, quello che dice al mondo che ci siamo, e ci resteremo. Quindi, ovunque vi troviate mentre leggete questa intervista, speriamo che voi o i vostri amici ci possiate portare sul vostro palco locale, festival o club. We had the chance to talk with Tore André Helgemo, singer and guitarist of Norwegian hard rockers Stargazer, about their latest album “Stone Cold Creature”, released by Mighty Music. Here follows the complete interview.

Welcome Tore André, and thanks for your time! Your new album “Stone Cold Creature” is a massive dose of hard rock energy, full of riffs, big hooks, and modern production. To kick things off, how would you introduce this record to both long-time fans and new listeners?
This must be our best effort so far in the way that we have grown into the game of producing. I think that for long-time fans, we have kept the immediate and authentic parts of songwriting, the ideas tend to live their own life as ever before, and you recognize the Stargazer-sound from the first bar. For new listeners this album contains tracks that are shorter than those we have delivered earlier, more straight to the point, perhaps even more accessible, you get the melody and the choruses, and killing riffs with heavy groove, then a little bit of guitar solo that blow your mind. What more can you ask for?

What was your main goal going into the writing and recording of “Stone Cold Creature”, and in what ways do you feel it marks a step forward compared to your previous albums?
The way we wanted to cut to the chase more than before and still keep the magic. I think it is production-wise we have grown most, nevertheless, we take on songwriting very seriously. We intend to have no fillers. That being said, you will always have those thinking a ballad or softer song in there would be a filler, but for us, we love these parts too. I feel we balance this well enough to be considered a hard rock band, but good melodies and good songs are very important in my opinion, whether it is so and so hard or not.

You worked with Søren Andersen, known for his work with classic rock icons but also modern-sounding productions. How did he help you find the right balance between honoring hard rock tradition and giving the album a fresh, contemporary edge?
He has always had a heart for this style of music, it is in his core, and he is so professional and knows immediately where we are heading when he listens to every new track. Then he twist the knobs and find the diamonds and rub them to shine as they deserve. Him being so active on the stage, touring almost continuously whether it is with Glenn Hughes or his own bands, makes him very up to date with what’s moving out there, that is also experiences he puts into his work, giving benefits for us, I think.

The keyboards play a strong and dynamic role in your sound. How important are they in shaping the atmosphere and identity of “Stone Cold Creature”?
Good point, there is a fine line to go whether it is too much or too little of that keyboard layer. On this record, they play a larger role in the sound than ever before, without, I think, becoming too much. Sondre, our keyboard player, still so young, is a really gifted musician, and has a real creative mind, so his presence is important, no doubt.

“Make A Deal With The Devil” is the lead single and a real standout. What’s the story behind the song, and why did you choose it as the first glimpse of the new album?
Great to hear that, it was the thought to have a real in your face rocker to begin with, so “Make a Deal” became the one. The lyrics are a bit tongue in cheek, but also relates to personal experiences with people wanting to show you the right way. False prophets, wizards and so on. So, you might read it like the man with the horns sometimes have the best alternative for you.

Can you walk us through some of the lyrical themes on “Stone Cold Creature”? Is there a unifying concept, or do the songs explore different stories and moods?
Every song tells its own story, but if you put your mind to it, I am sure you find themes that bind it all together in some ways. There are love-, loss-, melancholy-, friendship-, despair-, give-a-damn-, hope-, darkness-, and light-themes all the way through the album, just to mention a few.

You’ve shared the stage with legends like Glenn Hughes, Saxon, and Uriah Heep, and now you have just played at Tons of Rock 2025. How have those live experiences shaped you as a band?
We really had a blast at Tons of Rock, because we have just played there now. We were on the bill further down, but we had an overfilled tent audience going crazy on us, it was a great experience and we met many a new fan and quite a few long time fans too. Those live experiences are the best for shaping this band. We come together as musicians, and we have grown tighter and tighter, and to answer your question; fans can expect a tight band with some really good songs and have an enjoyable time of entertainment as well. You can see that we love what we do up there.

The new album will be available on vinyl, CD, and digital formats. Are you seeing growing interest in physical releases from your audience?
It looks like it is a growing demand, yes. We sell out our physical releases quite fast when we are out playing gigs. I believe this is mostly because our audience is growing too. However, especially vinyl seems to have been coming back trending for some years now.

This is our final question – thanks again for your time! Looking ahead, what does “Stone Cold Creature” represent for Stargazer at this point in your career, and what’s coming next after the release?
Thank you for your kind words and great questions! I think “Stone Cold Creature” is the album that will present us for a bigger audience, an album that tells the world that we are here to stay and you can count on us. So, when you read this, wherever you are in the world, we hope you or your friends can get us to your local stage, festival, club. We want to play this live for you!
