Le leggende del thrash metal tedesco Darkness festeggiano i 40 anni di carriera con il nuovo album “The Death Squad Chronicles”, in uscita il 26 settembre 2025 su Massacre Records. Prodotto da Cornelius Rambadt e masterizzato da Dennis Köhne, il disco mette in connessione passato e presente con nuove registrazioni di classici cult, vecchi demo mai pubblicati e due brani inediti. Ne abbiamo parlato con il chitarrista Arnd, che ci ha raccontato il percorso della band, la realizzazione del disco e la fiamma che continua ad alimentare i Darkness dopo quattro decenni.

Arnd, congratulazioni per i 40 anni dei Darkness! Guardando indietro, quali consideri i momenti più importanti nella carriera della band e come vi hanno reso quello che siete oggi?
Guardando al passato, alcuni dei momenti più importanti per me sono stati entrare nella band nell’estate del 1986, proprio nel pieno del caos del metal anni Ottanta, registrare il nostro primo disco a Stoccarda – un periodo magico e indimenticabile in studio – e più tardi il concerto travolgente al “Keep it True” nel 2006, quando mi sono reso conto di quante persone ancora portavano la nostra musica nel cuore. Questi momenti non solo hanno segnato il nostro percorso, ma mi hanno anche ricordato perché questa band ha sempre significato così tanto per me.

Con una storia così lunga, come riuscite a mantenere quell’energia e quell’aggressività che vi caratterizzano, sia in studio che sul palco?
Abbiamo ancora lo stesso spirito che avevamo negli anni Ottanta, perché quello è stato un periodo incredibile e formativo per noi, e continua a darci energia. Purtroppo il mondo non sta andando meglio, anzi sembra peggiorare, e questo ci dà ispirazione infinita per scrivere canzoni. Tutto lo schifo che ci circonda non può che farti incazzare, e quella rabbia costante è sempre stata la forza grezza dietro il nostro suono. Ma la vera magia avviene con la gente: i thrasher sono il pubblico migliore e più folle che ci sia, ti riempiono di energia e la scintilla scatta subito. Sul palco, quando senti quella connessione, l’adrenalina ti esplode nel cranio, ed è lì che ricordi esattamente perché, dopo tutti questi anni, continui a fare questa cosa.

“The Death Squad Chronicles” riprende classici da “Death Squad” e “Defenders of Justice”, include un pezzo da “Conclusion & Revival” e vecchi demo dimenticati. Com’è stato selezionare e rielaborare questi brani, e che sensazione dà riportarli in vita?
Scegliere i brani per “The Death Squad Chronicles” non è stato affatto facile. Ognuno di noi aveva i propri ricordi e preferiti, a volte sembrava impossibile mettersi d’accordo. Alla fine abbiamo deciso di concentrarci solo sul materiale precedente alla ripartenza con “The Gasoline Solution”, perché i pezzi scelti non erano mai stati registrati o suonati con la nuova formazione con Lee alla voce. Per noi era importante che mantenessero quella vecchia energia, che avessero lo spirito grezzo dei primi anni ma senza sembrare roba invecchiata. Penso che abbiamo trovato il giusto equilibrio: la produzione è moderna, ma non sterile o fredda, e questo per noi era fondamentale. Personalmente è un’esperienza incredibile riportare in vita questi brani: alcuni finalmente li possiamo suonare come li avevamo sempre immaginati, ora suonano davvero come dovrebbero, hahaha. Con gli originali non era sempre così, quindi è quasi come dare una seconda possibilità a un pezzo del nostro passato – e ricollegarsi al fuoco che ha fatto partire tutto.

Il disco contiene anche due pezzi nuovi. In che modo riflettono l’energia attuale della band e come si inseriscono accanto ai vostri classici?
I due brani nuovi magari sono freschi, ma hanno lo stesso spirito dei nostri vecchi pezzi, ed è per questo che si mescolano così naturalmente ai classici. Per noi sono più di semplici canzoni nuove: rappresentano un ponte tra i vecchi e i nuovi Darkness, dimostrano che il fuoco degli anni Ottanta brucia ancora oggi. Alla fine della fiera, non importa quanto tempo sia passato: i Darkness sono sempre una band thrash, e questi brani sono la prova che la nostra energia e la nostra aggressività non si sono spente. Stiamo ancora prendendo a calci la gente, no? Ed è proprio quello che dobbiamo fare.

“Death Squad 2025” vanta un cast di ospiti speciali da band come Sodom, Kreator e Vader. Come sono nate queste collaborazioni e che esperienza è stata lavorare con così tanti amici della scena metal?
Beh, conosciamo un sacco di band; la scena è un po’ come una grande famiglia. Siamo amici di Sodom e Kreator da anni, veniamo tutti dalla Ruhr. Per noi è stato un grande onore che così tanti colleghi abbiano cantato sui nostri pezzi. Ne siamo molto orgogliosi. Grazie a tutti quelli che hanno partecipato: siete i migliori!

La produzione di “The Death Squad Chronicles” è stata affidata a Cornelius Rambadt e il mastering a Dennis Köhne. Quanto è stato importante l’approccio moderno in fase di produzione, pur mantenendo l’intensità classica del thrash?
“The Death Squad Chronicles” segna la nostra quarta collaborazione in questa incarnazione con Cornelius e Dennis. Lavorare ancora con Corny è stato assolutamente decisivo per il successo dell’album. Funziona benissimo perché Corny non è solo un buon produttore, è anche un amico. Conosce la nostra musica e, cosa più importante, sa tirare fuori il meglio di noi. Volevamo che questi pezzi mantenessero lo spirito originale – quell’intensità thrash grezza e senza compromessi che ci ha sempre caratterizzati – ma con un suono moderno. È un po’ come camminare su una corda tesa tra il rispetto del passato e l’evoluzione verso il futuro. E in qualche modo Corny è riuscito proprio in questo. Dennis ha fatto un ottimo lavoro con il mastering, aggiungendo quella lucidatura finale che mette tutto perfettamente a fuoco. Ma quello che mi emoziona di più è come si è sentito l’intero processo: era come passare direttamente dalla sala prove del 1988 allo studio del 2025. Quel ponte tra passato e presente per noi era fondamentale. Ha dato senso a tutto quello per cui abbiamo lavorato e ha dimostrato che la musica trascende il tempo.

L’attuale formazione – tu, Lee, Dominik, Ben e Lacky – porta nuova energia alla band. In che modo la chimica tra di voi ha influenzato la registrazione di questo disco e le vostre performance live?
La chimica tra di noi è ottima. Non siamo solo colleghi, ma anche amici. Certo, abbiamo spesso opinioni diverse, ma alla fine troviamo sempre una soluzione che va bene a tutti. Personalmente credo che siamo più uniti sul palco che in studio, e c’è un motivo: lavorare in studio può essere duro e noioso. Ma i concerti sono sempre una scarica concentrata di energia. Sul palco andiamo sempre fuori controllo, siamo come uno tsunami che travolge la folla. E con Dominik abbiamo trovato un chitarrista forte, che si è integrato nella band dal primo minuto. Ci arricchisce sia come persona che come musicista, portando nuove prospettive ma rispettando la nostra storia.

Guardando avanti, cosa possono aspettarsi i fan dai vostri speciali show per l’anniversario e dai festival del 2025? Ci saranno sorprese o momenti speciali?
Lo show dell’anniversario sarà sicuramente un momento clou, con un set molto speciale. Il concerto è già sold out quattro settimane prima dell’inizio. Il 2025 è quasi finito, ma abbiamo ancora qualche data da suonare e sono già stati fissati concerti per l’anno prossimo. Per esempio, sono felice che suoneremo per la prima volta in Portogallo, e sarebbe fantastico tornare a suonare anche in Italia.

Infine, dopo quattro decenni di thrash metal, cosa riserva il futuro ai Darkness? Ci sono nuove direzioni o progetti che ti entusiasmano?
Certo, vogliamo fare altri passi importanti. Un album completamente nuovo non è improbabile, e mi piacerebbe suonare in un paio di festival davvero grossi. Ma comunque vada, continueremo come sempre: veloci, duri e senza compromessi. E come ho detto prima: il mondo non sta migliorando, quindi non ci mancherà mai l’ispirazione.

German thrash metal legends Darkness celebrate their 40th anniversary with the new album “The Death Squad Chronicles”, released on September 26th, 2025 via Massacre Records. Produced by Cornelius Rambadt and mastered by Dennis Köhne, the record bridges past and present with re-recordings of cult classics, long-lost demo material, and two brand new tracks. We spoke with guitarist Arnd, who shared his thoughts on the band’s journey, the making of the album, and the fire that still fuels Darkness after four decades.

Arnd, congratulations on 40 years of Darkness! Looking back, what do you consider the defining moments in the band’s career, and how have they shaped the band you are today?
Looking back, some of the most important moments for me were joining the band in the summer of 1986, right in the wild frenzy of 1980s metal, recording our very first album in Stuttgart, which was truly a magical and unforgettable time in the studio, and later the overwhelming concert at ‘Keep it True’ in 2006, where I suddenly realised how many people still carried our music in their hearts — those moments not only defined our journey but also reminded me why this band has always meant so much to me.

With such a long history, how do you maintain the energy and aggression that define your sound, both in the studio and on stage?
We still carry the same spirit we had back in the eighties, because that was such a great and defining time for us, and it still fuels what we do today. Sadly, the world isn’t getting any better — it feels like it’s only getting worse — and that gives us endless inspiration for songs. All the crap happening around us can only make you angry, and that constant anger has always been the raw energy behind our sound. But the magic really happens with the folks: thrashers are simply the best and craziest audience you can imagine, they pump you full of energy, and the spark immediately jumps across. On stage, when that connection hits, the adrenaline just flies through your skull, and that’s when you remember exactly why you’re still doing this after so many years.

“The Death Squad Chronicles” revisits classics from “Death Squad” and “Defenders of Justice”, includes a track from “Conclusion & Revival”, and features long-lost demo material. What was the process of selecting and reworking these songs like, and what does it feel like to bring them back to life?
Choosing the songs for “The Death Squad Chronicles” was anything but easy. Everyone in the band had their own memories and favorites, so at times it felt almost impossible to agree. In the end, we decided to focus only on material from before the restart with “The Gasoline Solution”, because the songs we chose were never recorded or played in the new line-up with Lee on the microphone. What mattered to us was that they should still feel true to that old energy, that they carry the raw spirit of our early years but not come across as outdated. I think we found the right balance — the production is modern, but never sterile or cold, and that was very important to us. For me personally, it’s an amazing experience to bring these songs back to life. Some of them we can finally play the way we always imagined, and now they sound the way they truly should, hahaha. With the originals, that wasn’t always the case, so it almost feels like giving a piece of our past a second chance — and reconnecting with the fire that started it all.

The album also introduces two brand new tracks. How do these songs reflect the current energy and direction of the band, and how do they fit alongside your classic material?
The two new songs may be fresh, but they carry the same spirit as our old material, which is why they blend in so naturally with the classics. For us, they’re more than just new tracks — they form a kind of bridge between the old and the new Darkness, showing that the fire we had in the eighties is still burning today. At the end of the day, no matter how much time has passed, Darkness is still a thrash band, and these songs are proof that our energy and aggression haven’t faded. We’re still kicking people’s arses, aren’t we? That’s what we are supposed to.

“Death Squad 2025” features an all-star lineup of guests from bands like Sodom, Kreator, and Vader. How did these collaborations come together, and what was it like to work with so many friends from across the metal scene?
Well, we know a lot of bands; the scene is kind of like a family. We’ve been friends with Sodom and Kreator for years; we all come from the Ruhr area. It was a great honour for us that so many good colleagues did us the honour of singing our songs. We are very proud of that. Thank’s to everyone who took part: you are the best!

The production of “The Death Squad Chronicles” was handled by Cornelius Rambadt and mastered by Dennis Köhne. How important was modern production in shaping the sound of the album while keeping the classic thrash intensity?
“The Death Squad Chronicles” marks our fourth collaboration in this constellation with Cornelius and Dennis. Working with Corny again was absolutely crucial to the album’s success. It works great because Corny is not just a good producer – he’s a good mate. He knows our music, and most importantly, Corny gets the most out of us. We wanted these songs to retain their old spirit – that raw, uncompromising thrash intensity that defined us – while still embracing a modern production approach. It’s like walking a tightrope between honoring your past and evolving for the future. And somehow, Corny succeeded in doing exactly that. Dennis did a good job too with the mastering, adding that final polish that brings everything into perfect focus. But what moves me most is how the entire process felt. It’s as if we went straight from the rehearsal room in 1988 to the studio in 2025. That bridge between past and present – that was very important to us. It validated everything we’ve worked for and proved that music transcends time.

The current line-up — you, Lee, Dominik, Ben and Lacky — brings fresh energy to the band. How has the chemistry among members influenced the recording of this album and your live performances?
The chemistry between us is very good. We are not only colleagues, but also friends. Sure, we often have different opinions but in the end we always find a good solution that everyone is happy with. Personally, I believe that we are more united on stage than in the studio, and there’s a reason for that. Studio work can be hard and annoying. But Concerts are always a concentrated burst of energy. On stage, we always go off the rails; we’re like a tsunami sweeping over the crowd. And in Dominik, we have found a strong guitarist who fit into the band from the very first minute. He enriches us as a person and as a musician, bringing fresh perspectives while respecting our legacy.

Looking ahead, what can fans expect from your special anniversary shows and festival appearances in 2025? Are there any surprises or special moments planned for these events?
The anniversary show will definitely be a highlight, where we will play a very special set. The concert is already sold out four weeks before it starts. The year 2025 is almost over. We still have a few concerts to play, and shows have already been booked for next year. For example, I’m excited that we’ll be playing in Portugal for the first time, and it would be great to play in Italy again.

Finally, after four decades of thrash metal, what does the future hold for Darkness? Are there new directions or projects you’re excited to explore?
Of course, we want to take further successful steps. A completely new album is not unlikely, and I would be delighted to play a few really big festivals. But either way, we will continue as before: fast, hard and uncompromising. And as I said before: the world is not getting any better, so we won’t run out of inspiration either.
