“Clad in Black” (Massacre Records), il nuovo album degli Helstar, include nuove canzoni, cover e il precedente disco della band, “Vampiro”, nella sua interezza. Abbiamo fatto due chiacchiere su questa compilation su doppio CD \ LP con il grande James Rivera.

Ciao James, come te la passi in questi strani giorni caratterizzati dall’emergenza pandemica e dall’attacco al Campidoglio?
Sto bene e sto creando musica. Non mi piace entrare in questioni riguardanti la politica, quindi non ho commenti da fare su Capitol Hill, ma ti dirò che in qualche modo capisco perché alcune persone hanno reagito in quel modo. Questo paese stava crescendo economicamente e ora possiamo solo dire addio al suo sviluppo!

Come ci si può rapportate con la musica in questi momenti difficili?
Bene, è facile. Ci dà qualcosa da fare. Inoltre possediamo degli studio privati, quindi non dobbiamo neanche uscire e stare con le persone.

Come nasce il titolo “Clad in Black”?
È un una delle mie frasi preferite del romanzo di Bram Stokers, Dracula, quando Johnathan Harker incontrò Dracula per la prima trovi scritto “Ed eccolo lì. L’uomo dall’aspetto strano vestito di nero”.

L’album include due nuove canzoni e il singolo “Black Wings Of Solitude”, già disponibile da ottobre 2020. Per favore, potresti descrivere queste tre tracce?
“Dark Incarnation” parla di un film che Larry mi ha mandato su una malvagia strega satanica. “Black Wings” racconta di un vampiro che tenta di diventare normale per amore di una mortale ma non ci riesce. “Across the Raging Seas” parla di un Kamakaze. Quei piloti giapponesi che hanno fatto attacchi sucidi alle navi da battaglia nemiche.

Nella track list possiamo trovare tre cover – “Restless and Wild” (Accept), “After All (The Dead)” (Black Sabbath) e “Sinner” (Judas Priest) – perché hai scelto questi classici?
Sono canzoni che facevamo nei nostri primissimi giorni quando eravamo ancora come cover band e che facciamo ancora nei miei James Rivera’s Sabbath Judas Sabbath Metal Extravangza.

Il secondo CD della versione digipak include il precedente album in studio della band, “Vampiro”, nella sua interezza, mixato e masterizzato da Bill Metoyer agli Skull Seven Studios. Perché ha voluto ristampare questo album solo due anni dopo dalla sua uscita originale?
Perché riteniamo che non abbia ottenuto il riconoscimento che meritava a causa di un’etichetta che ha dimostrato di non avere le capacità promozionali per farlo conoscere di più in giro.

“Vampiro” è una parola italiana: volevi dare un titolo italiano al tuo album?
Amo la lingua italiana, ma Vampiro si dice anche spagnolo, che è la lingua madre mia e di Larry, quindi l’abbiamo chiamato così per la nostra lingua.

Ti ricordi quando è nata la tua passione per i vampiri?
A causa di molte lune piene da bambino, ma ancora di più quando abbiamo iniziato a scrivere “Nosferatu”.

Ci sono altri concept che vorresti creare per i tuoi futuri album?
Per quanto riguarda gli altri, sono liberi di scrivere ciò che vogliono, noi non stiamo ancora pensando a un altro concept album. Quanto a me, scriverò sempre di vampiri il più possibile. Come vuole la leggenda, i vampiri vivono per l’eternità, così come l’amore e l’interesse per loro di una parte enorme del mondo. La mania dei vampiri è oggi più grande e più forte di quanto non lo sia mai stata e continua a crescere.

Come hai preservato la tua voce dopo tutti questi anni?
Bene, oltre ai motivi di natura medica e scientifica, come adeguati allenamenti, con tonnellate di sonno nella mia bara durante i tour. Buon champagne e Jager Meister!

Hai reso omaggio alle voci meravigliose di Rob Halford e Ronnie James, ma c’è qualche nuovo cantante che ami?
Beh, non direi nuovi cantanti in generale, amo Steve Perry, Tom Jones, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Engelbert Humperdink, Neil Diamond, i Betales, i cantanti della Mowtown, David Gahan, Peter Murphy, Morrisey, Robert Smith, Andrew Eldricth dei Sister’s of Mercy, Alice Cooper, Dani Fith ma per quanto riguarda un nuovo cantante che ho incontrato di recente, del quale non solo amo la sua voce ma anche la sua band, è sicuramente Gabriel Franco degli Idle Hands.

Hi James, how are you in these strange days between pandemic emergency and the Capitol Hill attack?
Well been doing fine and just creating music. I don’t like getting into polotics so I really have no comment about Capitol Hill but I will say I understand to a certain point why those people reacted the way they did. This country was shaping up economically and now we can kiss that goodbye!

How can represent the music in these hard days?
Well it’s easy. It gives us something to do. Plus we have home studios so we don’t really have to go out and be around people.

How is born the title “Clad in Black”?
It is a favorite saying in the novel Bram Stokers Dracula when Johnathan Harker met Dracula for the first time he wrote “And there he stood. The strangest looking man Clad In Black”.

The album includes two new songs and the single “Black Wings Of Solitude”, which is available since October 2020. Please, could you describe these three tracks?
“Dark Incarnation” is about a movie Larry sent me about an evil satanic witch. “Black Wings” is about a vampire who wants to try to become normal for a mortal love but can’t. “Across the Raging Seas” is about a Kamikaze piolt. The Japanese pilots who did suciade attacks on enemy battle ships.

In the track list we can find three covers – “Restless and Wild” (Accept), “After All (The Dead)” (Black Sabbath) and Sinner (Judas Priest) – why did you choose these classics?
They are songs we were doing in our very young days still as a cover band and still do in my James Rivera’s Sabbath Judas Sabbath Metal Extravangza.

The second CD of the digipak version includes the band’s previous studio album “Vampiro” in its entirety, which was mixed and mastered by Bill Metoyer at Skull Seven Studios. Why did want to reissue this album just two year later from his original release?
Because we felt it didn’t get the recognition it desereved on a new label that didn’t quit have the promotional skills to get it more known.

Vampiro is the Italian word that stands for vampire: did you wat to give an Italia title to your album?
I love the Italian language so to speak but Vampiro is also Spanish which is mine and Larry’s heritage so no we named it that for our language.

Do you remember when is born your fascination for vampires?
Many full moons agao as a child but even more so when we started writing Nosferatu.

Are there any other concepts you would like to create for your future albums?
As for the rest of the writers they are free to write what they please and we’re not thinking of another concept album yet. As for me I will always write about Vampires as much as I can. As legend has it, vampires live for eternity and so will the love and interest for them from a huge part of the world. The vampire craze is bigger and stronger today then it ever was and continues to grow.

How did you preserve your voice after all these years?
Well on top of the medical and scientific reason of being properly trained how to sing, Tons of sleep in the coffin while on tour. Good champagne and Jager Meister!

You gave your tribute to wonderful voices of Rob Halford and Ronnie James, but is there some new singer you love?
Well I wouldn’t say new singersin general but I love other singers such as Steve Perry, Tom Jones, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Engelbert Humperdink, Neil Diamond, all the Betales, Mowtown singers, David Gahan, Peter Murphy, Morrisey, Robert Smith, Andrew Eldricth of Sister’s of Mercy, Alice Cooper, Dani Fith but as far the newest singer I have come across recently and not only love his voice but the band in general is one my favorites now Gabriel Franco of Idle Hands.

I Poltergeist contribuiscono all’ottimo momento della scena thrash tedesca con un album che al contempo suona classico e moderno. “Feather Of Truth” (Massacre Records) è un disco solido e ben riuscito, addirittura il migliore dei teutonici secondo il leader V.O. Pulver!

Benvenuto su Il Raglio del Mulo, V.O.! A due mesi dall’uscita di “Feather Of Truth” siete soddisfatti del feedback?
Ciao Giuseppe. Sì, sono molto soddisfatto finora di tutte le reazioni al nostro nuovo album! La maggior parte dei fan e dei recensori ha apprezzato molto “Feather Of Truth”! Fantastico!

Nei tuoi testi la storia è la chiave per comprendere il significato di questi tempi moderni: l’umanità commette sempre gli stessi errori?
Sembra proprio che sia così. Penso che tutto sia un po’ ‘”un cerchio” e certe cose tendono a ripetersi dopo il giusto lasso di tempo. Ma c’è sempre la speranza che il genere umano inizi a imparare da eventi e comportamenti passati e cambi certe cose… Beh, la speranza è sempre per ultima a morire, immagino…

Potresti spiegare il titolo “The Feather Of Truth”?
“The Feather Of Truth” è una tradizione fondamentale dell’antica mitologia egizia, l’ultimo giudizio dopo la morte. Credevano che il cuore venisse pesato e, se fosse risultato più pesante di una piuma, non sarebbe stato concesso al defunto di vivere dopo la morte. Sarebbe stato distrutto da Ammit, il “Gobbler”. Non c’era nessun “inferno” per loro, perché credevano che la non esistenza fosse di gran lunga peggiore di qualsiasi inferno.

Il nuovo album è stato prodotto da te, perché?
Perché ho il mio studio di registrazione e produco anche molte altre band da quasi 20 anni. L’altra cosa è il budget / denaro. Se decidessimo di rivolgerci a uno studio / produttore esterno, qualcuno dovrebbe pagare tutto questo… e in questi tempi di quasi reddito zero sarebbe molto difficile finanziarlo. E c’è anche il fatto che so bene come dovrebbero suonare i Poltergeist, dato che ho scritto la maggior parte delle canzoni e dei testi!

È questo l’album migliore dei Poltergeist?
Penso di sì. Abbiamo cercato di incorporare il maggior numero possibile di influenze diverse, ma mantenendo lo spirito “tipico” dei Poltergeist. In tutti questi anni e album, abbiamo sempre scritto canzoni con stili diversi e, al di là della matrice speed / thrash, c’erano alcune influenze heavy metal frequenti. Questa volta non volevamo limitarci a una sola cosa e abbiamo cercato di differire da canzone a canzone. Ha anche aiutato il fatto che questa volta anche Chasper e Ralf abbiano scritto alcune canzoni.

Chasper ha composto quattro canzoni in questo album, in che modo il suo stile è diverso dal tuo?
Penso che sia più interessato alle partiture complesse / progressive. Puoi sentirlo nelle sue canzoni. Le strutture sono molto più complicate e ricche di dettagli. Le mie canzoni tendono a concentrarsi di più sugli hook e stati d’animo, affidandosi maggiormente alle linee vocali e alle melodie, ovviamente pur mantenendo il riff thrash e la velocità. Ma alla fine penso che sia difficile per noi / me giudicare o sottolineare la differenza. Questo dovrebbe essere lasciato all’ascoltatore. La cosa divertente è che in alcune recensioni hanno citato le canzoni di Chasper come esempi per il mio mio stile… non si sono resi conto che quelle tracce non erano opera mie. Questo di mostra che poi le differenze non sembrano essere così evidenti nel nostro stile di scrittura!

Guardando indietro, sei soddisfatto della tua carriera con Poltergeist?
Che domanda?! Ovviamente no! Dov’è la mia villa da 5 milioni di dollari? Dove sono le mie costose auto sportive? Dove sono fama e celebrità? Il mio jet privato? Ahahahahah…. Seriamente: penso che molte cose sarebbero potute andare meglio. Sarebbe stato bello fare più tour e vendere più dischi e ottenere più supporto dalle case discografiche ecc. Ma siamo onesti, il business della musica è come una lotteria e devi avere una grande porzione di fortuna per avere una buona carriera e abbastanza soldi per vivere della tua musica. E le cose non sta migliorando, anzi al contrario…

Mi puoi spiegare il cambio di genere avvenuto durante il passaggio da Carrion a Poltergeist?
Quando André si unì ai Carrion e il secondo chitarrista V.C. lasciò la band, abbiamo deciso di cambiare anche lo stile oltre il nome della band. Volevo concentrarmi di più sulla chitarra senza pensare anche al canto e André aveva una voce favolosa che richiedeva un approccio molto più melodico alle canzoni. Così abbiamo ricominciato da zero e poiché l’ultima canzone che abbiamo scritto come Carrion si intitolava Poltergeist, abbiamo deciso di chiamare la “nuova band” in questo modo!

Prima dell’uscita nel 1993 di “Nothing Lasts Forever” Century Media ti ha fatto pressioni per cambiare il tuo stile nel death metal?
No, questo è avvenuto prima di “Behind My Mask” ma non ci hanno fatto pressioni, ci hanno solo chiesto se potevamo provare a spingerci di più verso sonorità death metal, perché band come Morgoth stavano sprizzando alle stelle con le loro vendite e successo e non noi invece non vendevamo un cazzo. Ma questa non era ovviamente un’opzione valida per noi. Ci piaceva quello che stavamo facendo e cambiare alcuni aspetti chiave della nostra musica, solo per copiare una moda, non faceva per noi! “Nothing Lasts Forever” non è stato pubblicato su Century Media. Un nostro amico ha fondato una piccola etichetta (Haunted House) appositamente per noi e l’abbiamo accontentato.

Welcome on Il Raglio del Mulo, V.O.! After two month from the release of “Feather Of Truth” are satisfied with the feedback?
Hi Giuseppe. Yeah, I am very satisfied so far with all the reactions to our new album! So far most of the fans and reviewers really liked “Feather Of Truth” and think positive about it! Fantastic!

In your lyrics the history is the key for understanding the meaning to these modern times: does the mankind always make the same mistakes?
It seems like this is the case… I think all is kind of‚ in circles and certain things just tend to repeat itself, given the proper time-frame. But there’s always hope that the human kind will start to learn from past events and behaviors and change certain thing. Well, hope dies last I guess…

Could you explain the title “Feather of Truth?
The Feather Of Truth is a key part in the Old Egyptian Mythology about the last Judgment after Death. They believed your heart will be weighted against this and if your heart/soul is heavier than the feather, you won’t be granted live after death, you will be destroyed by Ammit, the Gobbler. There was no‚ Hell to them, instead they believed that non-existence was far worse than any hell.

The new album was produced by yourself, why?
Because I have my own recording studio and also produce many other bands since almost 20 years. The other thing is budget/money. If we would decide to turn to an external studio/producer somebody would have to pay this… and in these times of almost no income it would be very difficult to finance this. And there’s also the fact that I probably know the best how Poltergeist should sound, as I wrote most of the songs and lyrics…

Is this the best album by Poltergeist?
I think so. We tried to incorporate as many different influences as possible, but still maintain the typical Poltergeist spirit. Over all these years and albums, we always wrote different styled songs and had, beneath the speed/thrash thing, some regular heavy metal influences going on. This time we just didn’t want to limit ourselves to just one thing and tried to differ from song to song. It also helped that this time also Chasper and Ralf wrote some songs.

Chasper wrote four songs on this album, how his style is different by your?
I think he’s more into the complex/progressive stuff. You can hear it in his songs. The structures are far more complicated and detail-driven. My songs tend to concentrate more on hooks and moods, relying more on the vocal lines and melodies, of course while still maintaining the thrash riffing and speed. But in the end I think it’s difficult for us/me to judge or point out the difference. This should be left to the listener. Funny thing is, in some reviews they took Chasper’s songs as examples for my way of sneaking GURD-leftovers into Poltergeist… they didn’t realize these tracks were not from me in the first place. So this shows that the differences seem not to be that big in our writing style…hahaha

Looking back, are you satisfied of your career with Poltergeist?
What a question…. Of course not! Where is my 5 million dollar mansion? Where are my expensive sports cars? Where’s the fame and stardom? My private jet? HAHAHAHAHAHA… No, to be serious now: I think many things could have gone better. Would have been great to do more tours and sell more records and to get more support from record companies etc. but let’s be honest, the music business is like a lottery and you must have a big portion of luck to have a good career and enough money to live from your music. that’s how it is and it’s not getting any better… au contraire…

Could you explain the change of genre form Carrion to Poltergeist?
When André joined Carrion back in the day and the second guitarist V.C. left the band, we decided to change also the style and the name of the band. I wanted to concentrate more on the guitar without the singing and André just had a fabulous singing voice which demanded a way more melodic approach to the songs. So we started anew and because the last song we wrote as Carrion was named Poltergeist, we decided to call the ‚new‘ band like this!

Before the release in 1993 of “Nothing Lasts Forever” did Century Media pressure you to change your style in death metal?
No, this was before “Behind My Mask” and they didn’t pressure us, they just asked us if we maybe could try to go more in the death metal direction, because bands like Morgoth were going through the roof with their sales and success and we didn’t sell shit… But this was of course no option for us. We liked what we were doing and to change certain key aspects in our music, just to hit a trend, was and is not our thing! “Nothing Lasts Forever” was not released on Century Media. A Friend of us founded a small label (Haunted House) specially for us and we tried to go with it.

I Sinister sono tornanti con uno dei loro migliori album, “Deformation of the Holy Realm” (Massacre Records), ne abbiamo parlato con il leader e cantante della band Aad Kloosterwaard.

Benvenuto Aad, dopo 14 album non sei stanco del metal estremo?
Io, stanco della musica estrema?! ahah. Amo questa musica da oltre 30 anni e non smetterò mai di farlo. Il death metal, o la musica estrema, è nel mio sangue.

Dove trovi la tua ispirazione per i tuoi estremismo?
Nella musica questo è tutto. Sono ancora un grande fan dell’underground e ascolto le idee di queste nuove band. Sono molto diverse dai Sinister, naturalmente, ma a volte portano novità sul tavolo. Hanno un’idea diversa della struttura delle canzoni e di quel genere di cose.

Quanto sono importanti i testi nella creazione delle tue canzoni?
I testi sono importanti ma mai così importanti come la musica stessa. Quando hai un bel testo, è un bel extra, ma la musica deve sempre venire al primo posto.

L’album inizia con un’intro e termina con un outro arrangiati da Denis Mauko, potrebbe essere questo il primo passo per un album orchestrale dei Sinister?
No, mai. Per noi è normale iniziare con un’intro che crea una sensazione oscura, questa volta abbiamo anche un’outro in questo stile, penso che sia fantastico! Come sai, nel disco abbiamo inserito anche delle parti orchestrali nella nostra musica per dare in alcuni frangenti un qualcosa in più. Penso che questo possa far pensare che in futuro potrà esserci qualcos’altro del genere già nel prossimo album, ma prima dobbiamo vedere come verrà fuori la nuova musica.

La prima canzone è la title track, penso che questa traccia sia l’essenza dei Sinister di oggi, sei d’accordo?
Non ne sono sicuro. Quando creiamo cose nuove non guardiamo mai indietro, forse il prossimo disco sarà molto old school o magari molto moderno.

Come è cambiato il vostro sound nel corso degli anni?
Penso che tu me lo stia chiedendo perché abbiamo sempre nuovi membri che portano sempre un modo diverso di fare musica, ahaha. Cerchiamo di non suonare sempre allo stesso modo, ma tutto deve sempre suonare Sinister.

Cosa ricordi della scena underground olandese degli anni ’90?
È stato molto tempo fa, haha! Ero molto giovane, quindi era tutto nuovo per me. ti ritrovi in un nuovo mondo che non conosci, ma dopo un po’ scopri che non tutto è così bello. Ma tutto sommato ho bei ricordi di quel tempo.

C’era una collaborazione tra le death metal band?
In alcuni casi sì in altri no, con certi gruppi scorreva cattivo sangue perché non erano in grado di sopportare che alcune band diventassero più grandi della loro. Dall’altra parte ho avuto ottimi contatti con alcuni gruppi in quel periodo.

Dei nuovi due membri che mi dici?
Walter è il nostro nuovo chitarrista e Bram il nostro nuovo bassista. Due ragazzi davvero bravi con una bella personalità, cosa che è importante per Sinister, funziona tutto alla grande con loro e stanno rendendo la band ancora migliore.

In passato sei stato il batterista, oggi dai qualche consiglio a Toep?
Hahaha, in nessun modo, Toep è un batterista di gran lunga migliore di me, quindi non ho bisogno di dirgli niente, e come puoi sentire sta facendo il lavoro grandioso.

Quali canzoni del nuovo disco suonerete dal vivo?
La title track, naturalmente, “Apostels of the Weak” e un’altra che non abbiamo ancora scelto.

Ricordi il tuo spettacolo a Bari nel 2012?
Ti piacerebbe avere una risposta vera, haha. Non molto, da allora abbiamo fatto così tanti spettacoli in tutto il mondo che non è facile ricordare ogni show…

Sinister are back with one of their best albums, “Deformation of the Holy Realm” (Massacre Records), we talked about it with band leader and singer Aad Kloosterwaard.

Welcome Aad, after 14 albums aren’t you tired of extreme metal?
Hello.Tired from extreme music haha. I love this music for over 30 years and will not go away.Death metal or extreme music is in my blood.

Where you find your inspiration for your extremism?
In music that’s it. I am still a big underground fan and listening to this bands ideas. They are very different than Sinister of course but they bring sometimes new things to the table. They have a different idea about song structures and that kind off stuff.

How important are lyrics in the creation of your songs?
Lyrics are important but never that important as the music it self. When you have a cool lyric than that’s a nice extra but music always have to come on the first place.

The album begins with an intro and ends with an outro arranged by Denis Mauko, could be this the first step to an orchestral Sinister album?
No never.For us its normale to start with a intro that have a dark feeling. This time also a outro in this style and i think it turn out great. As you know the record we put also this orchestral parts in our music to give some parts a extra feeling. I think you can expect more from us in this style on the next record, but first first we have to see how the new music will turn out.

The first song is the title track, I think this song is the essence of noway Sinister, are you agree?
I dont for sure. When we are in process of creating new stuff we never look back. Maybe the next record will be very old school or very modern.

How is changed your sound through the years?
When you ask me i think the reason is that we have new members ones in a while haha and they have a different look on making music. We try not to sound the same all the time but everything still have to sound Sinister.

What do you remember about the Dutch underground scene of ’90?
That’s a long time ago for me haha. I was very young so it all was new for me. You come in a new world that you dont know, but you find out that not everything was that cool after some time. But i have good memories from that time.

Was there a collaboration between death metal bands?
Really good and really bad, with some band there was bad blood because they where not able to handle that some bands became bigger than there own band so to say. At the other side i had great contact with some bands from that time.

What’s about the new two members?
Walter is our new guitar player and Bram our new bass player. Two really good guyz with a nice personality something that is important for Sinister. It works out great with them and they are making the band even better.

In the past you are the drummer, today do you give some advices to Toep?
Hahaha no way. Toep is a much better drummer than i was so i dont need to tell him anything, and as you can hear he is doing the job very well.

Which songs from the new will you play live?
The title track of course, “Apostels of the Weak” and one more, but we need to see which one that will be.

Do you remember your show in Bari in 2012?
You like to have a fair answer haha. Not that much anymore in the mean time we did so much shows all over the world that its not easy to remember every show you played…
