Communic – Hiding from the world

Dopo un paio di album, i Communic sembravano destinati a grandi cose, magari non tutte le promesse sono state mantenuto, ma il trio – grazie a Dio – è ancora qui con “Hiding from the World” (AFM Records) un disco di assoluto valore.

Benvenuto, Oddleif, come è nato “Hiding from the World”?
Ciao e grazie per il supporto. Beh, gli ultimi tre anni sono stati spesi a mettere insieme le canzoni, a provare e a registrare, ho sempre un bel po’ di materiale tra cui scegliere, quindi inizia tutto con una specie di cernita per capire cosa usare e cosa funziona. Le prime due canzoni che sono state scritte sono la title track “Hiding From The World e” Born Without a Heart” e quelle due hanno creato l’atmosfera che stavo cercando di mettere insieme. Quindi un anno di demo e di elaborazione di idee, un altro anno trascorso in sala prove insieme come band ad arrangiare le canzoni in modo che funzionassero per tutti e ognuno potesse mettere le proprie influenze, e poi all’inizio del 2020 abbiamo iniziato a registrare l’album in studio, un po’ rallentati dalla situazione covid e da diversi ostacoli e strade sconnesse, tutto ha portato alla data di uscita del 20 novembre.

Chi si nasconde al mondo?
O cosa ci nasconde il mondo? Bella domanda, sì, si adatta perfettamente alla situazione nel mondo di oggi, ma il titolo era pronto già all’inizio del 2019, quando stavamo mettendo insieme le canzoni per questo disco. E a quel tempo abbiamo trascorso un lungo weekend in una piccola capanna vicino ai fiordi nelle paraggi di dove viviamo qui in Norvegia, e siamo rimasti lì solo noi tre della band, avevamo la nostra attrezzatura di registrazione con noi, buon cibo e bevande, e abbiamo arrangiato alcune delle canzoni in quel fine settimana. Stavamo prendendo le distanze da cose che avrebbero potuto fermare la nostra creatività, è stato un modo divertente e fantastico di fare una vacanza con i ragazzi, e abbiamo creato un po’ di magia che si è concretizzata in musica. Guardando indietro, il titolo funziona anche per la situazione in cui ci troviamo adesso, dove i paesi stanno imponendo blocchi e tutto il resto, ma tutto ciò è solo una coincidenza.

Non è facile classificare la tua musica, è una sorta di brainstorming! Come fai a capire se una nuova canzone è buona per un album?
D’accordo, siamo abbastanza difficili da inserire in una categoria, ma non vogliamo essere bloccati da delle regole su ciò che possiamo fare o no, nessuna regola è l’idea di base. Sono abbastanza fiducioso che abbiamo trovato la nostra identità ma cerchiamo ancora di evolverci e continuare a scrivere la musica che ci piace. Sono sempre alla ricerca di nuove idee e canzoni, cerco sempre di comunicare i sentimenti e le emozioni nella musica, in questi giorni ho cercato di non complicare troppo le cose, come probabilmente facevamo prima. Cercando di perfezionare le dinamiche e i cambi di tempo, come abbiamo sempre fatto sin dal nostro album di debutto nel 2005, gli alti e bassi di energia e di emozioni, se capisci cosa intendo. Ma ancora proviamo a lanciare alcune cose nuove, ma suona sempre tutto come Communic.

Secondo il foglio promozionale, hai detto: “Le canzoni di questo album sono piuttosto diverse”. Perché queste canzoni sono diverse dal passato: processo spontaneo o scelta?
Penso ancora che sia vero. Sono abbastanza diverse, nella forma e nella dinamica. C’è un po’ di tutto qui, da tranquilli passaggi acustici a parti con esplosioni molto veloci, melodie vocali calme e morbide ad alcune fasi davvero pesanti. Chitarre ultra pulite e muri di suono di chitarra davvero spessi e brutali. Tutto questo è ovviamente una scelta personale e non spontanea, anche se alcuni di queste idee ci arrivano spontaneamente mentre suoniamo insieme, ma alla fine tutto è messo lì con uno scopo.

Alcune melodie in “Forgotten” mi ricordano “Space Oddity” di David Bowie: errore mio o c’è un piccolo tributo al Duca Bianco?
Fantastico, mai pensato come un tributo, ma ha alcune delle strutture degli accordi semplici come dici tu che possono ricordarlo. Questa era una delle canzoni che non pensavo potesse adattarsi allo stile dei Communic, poiché era un’idea semplice che ho scritto su una chitarra acustica, ma quando abbiamo iniziato a lavorarci, la canzone è semplicemente cresciuta dentro di noi, ed è venuta fuori una grande traccia, una delle mie preferite e un ottimo finale per l’album.

Adoro la copertina, è ricca di pathos come la vostra musica! L’idea originale è vostra o di Travis Smith?
Ho sempre amato i lavori di Travis Smith e il suo stile, e da molto tempo sognavo di convincerlo a realizzare un’opera per i Communic. Il risultato è un cumulo di idee mie e di Travis. Lo spunto è nato così. Mostra questa figura, o statuetta in pietra, circondata dalla terra con dei rami dall’aspetto di morti aggrappati, un buco nel petto e una gabbia appesa all’albero con il cuore o l’anima rinchiusi, e la chiave della prigione appesa fuori portata. Penso che sia grande e rappresenti l’energia e l’atmosfera dell’album e abbia quel tocco di Travis Smith.

Siete rimasti nascosti al mondo tra il 2011 e il 2017, possono questi sei anni senza nuovi album aver compromesso il vostro seguito?
Sì, forse, perché è molto tempo. Abbiamo dovuto ricominciare un po’ tutto da capo, ma è così che doveva essere, e possiamo solo incolpare noi stessi, ma siamo ancora qui! Abbiamo avuto alcuni anni di vuoto dopo che il nostro album del 2011, “The Bottom Deep”, ci ha permesso di partecipare a dei grandi festival e suonare dal vivo, ma avremmo dovuto fare di più, guardando indietro. E poi abbiamo passato un bel po’ di tempo a cambiare etichetta discografica e a capire cosa fare e come scegliere la giusta direzione per la band in ambito commerciale. E tutto questo ha richiesto molto tempo per arrivare a una stabilizzazione e prendere forma e fissare gli obiettivi su cui lavorare.

I vostri primi due album sono stati un clamoroso successo, pensi di aver mantenuto le promesse di inizio carriera?
Se chiedi al tipico fan di Communic, probabilmente apprezza di più i nostri primi album, ma penso che sia normale così, è capitato anche a me con i miei gruppi preferiti, mi sono piaciuti nel momento in cui ho iniziato ad ascoltarli, e alla lunga si sono allontanati da dove sono partiti, e io vorrei che tornassero a fare di nuovo lo stesso album. In Flames, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Fates Warning e l’elenco potrebbe continuare, ma noi mutiamo come persone, cresciamo come individui e acquistiamo esperienza e le cose variano. Quindi sento che siamo cambiati molto anche noi stessi nel corso degli album che abbiamo fatto, in alcuni più di altri ma tutti hanno avuto uno scopo. Ma so che la nostra musica non è per tutti, quindi se alla gente piace è un bonus, poiché non è una questione di causa, perché sono piuttosto egoista su ciò che cerco di trasmettere nella mia musica. Tornando alla tua domanda, penso che siamo rimasti abbastanza fedeli a ciò che abbiamo iniziato, ma ovviamente le nuove cose saranno sempre diverse in qualche modo.

Le tue prossime mosse?
In questo momento dovremo vedere quando il mondo verrà aperto alle band per fare di nuovo tour, ma immagino che ci vorrà ancora del tempo per riprendersi e tenere la situazione sotto controllo, e potremmo dover attendere prima un vaccino. Ma vogliamo davvero uscire e fare di nuovo un tour e promuovere la nostra roba. Forse proveremo a organizzare un concerto in live streaming dal nostro studio o soggiorno, non lo so, forse qualcosa di personale al quale possiamo invitare i nostri fan che vorrebbero vedere qualcosa del genere e invitarli nella nostra intimità per qualcosa di speciale in questi tempi senza tour in corso.

After a couple of albums, Communic seemed destined for great things, maybe not all promises were kept, but the trio – thank God – is still here with “Hiding from the World” (AFM Records) a record of absolute value.

Welcome, Oddleif, how “Hiding from the World” was born?
Hi and thanks for the support. Well the last three years was spent putting the songs together, rehearshing and recording, I have always quite a lot of material to choose from, so it starts out with a kind of figuring out what to use and what works. The first two song that was written was the title track “Hiding From The World and “Born Without a Heart” and those two set the mood that I was looking for putting everything together. So one year of demoing and putting ideas together, another year spent in the rehearsal room together as a band arranging the songs so it works for everyone, and everyone gets to put their influences into the material, and then in the beginning of 2020 we started to record the album in studio, a bit halted by the covid situation and diverse obstractions and bumpy roads, everything leads up to the release date November 20th.

Who is hiding from the world?
Or what is the world hiding from us? Good question, yeah it fits right into the situation in the world today, but the title was ready, guessing in the beginning of 2019, when we where putting the songs for this album together. And at that time we had a long weekend that we spent in a little cabin by the fjords close to where we live here in Norway, and we stayed there only the 3 of us in the band, had our recording gear with us, made some good food and drinks, and arranged some of the songs together that weekend, and we was kinda distancing ourselves form stuff that would halt the creativities, it was a fun and great way of a trip with the boys, and we made some magic that ended up as music. Looking back now, the title works for the time we are in now as well, where countries are forcing lockdowns and all that, but all that was was just a coincident.

Is not easy to classified your music, is a sort of brainstorming! How do you feel that a new song is good for an album?
Agree, we are quite difficult to pin down into one category, but we don’t want to be locked into rules of what we can do or not, no rules is the idea. I am pretty confident in that we have found our identity but still tries to evolve and continue write the music we like ourselves. Looking for new ideas and songs, I’m always looking to communicate with the feelings and emotions in the music, these days I tried to not over complicate things as much as we probably did before. Trying to perfectionate the dynamics and the tempo changes that we started out doing on our debut album back in 2005, the ups and downs in energy and emotions if you understand. But still we try to throw some new things in but still sounding as Communic.

According to the promo sheet, you said: “The songs on this album is quite diverse”. Why these songs are different form the past: spontaneous process or choice?
I still think that is true. They are quite diverse, in the different buildup and dynamics over the songs. There is a bit of everything here, all from calm acoustic passages to really fast blastbeats parts, calm and mellow vocal melodies to some really heavy phrases. Ultra clean guitars to really chunky brutal walls of guitar sounds. All this is of course a personal choice and not spontaneous, even if some of these moments comes to us as spontaneous moments when we play together, but in the end everything is put there with a purpose.

Some melodies in “Forgotten” remember me “Space Oddity” by David Bowie: my mistake or is there a little tribute to the White Duke?
Cool, never thought about as a tribute, but it has some of the kind of simple chord structures as you mention it. This was one of the songs I didn’t think would fit into the Communic style, as it was a simple idea that I wrote on an acoustic guitar, but when we started to work on it, the song just grew on us, and really built up to be a great song, one of my favorite this time around and a great ending for the album.

I love the cover artwork, is rich of pathos like your music! The original idea is by you or by Travis Smith?
I have always loved Travis Smith’s work and his style, and had a dream fo a long time to get him to work out a Communic artwork. The result is a cumulation of ideas from Travis and myself. The artwork ideas came together from this. It shows this figure, or statuette in stone overtaken by the earth with its dead looking branches clinging, a hole in his chest, and a cage hanging from the tree with heart or soul locked up, and the key to the cage hanging out of reach. Think it turned out great and represents the energy and the atmosphere on the album and has that Travis Smith touch.

You were hidden from the world between 2011 and 2017, can these six year with no new albums have compromised your following?
Yeah, maybe, you know it is a long time. We kinda had to start a bit all over again, but that is how it had to be, and we can only blame our self, but we are still here! We had a few years of vacuum after our 2011 album “The Bottom Deep” did some great festivals and played some live following the album but we should have done more looking back. And then we spent a good amount of time changing record label and actually figuring out what to do and how to choose the right direction for the band when it comes to the business part of it all. And all this took a long time to settle and get down to paper and to set the goals to work towards.

Your first two albums were a resounding successes, do you think you have kept promises of your beginning of career?
If you ask the typical Communic fan he probably value our first albums the most, but I think that is the way it is, that is how I feel about my favorite bands as well, that I liked the time when I started out listen to them, and in the long run they stray away from where they started out, and I would wish for them to go back do that same album again. Like In flames, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Fates Warning and the list goes on, but we change as people, grow as individuals and gain life experience and things change. So I feel that we have changed a lot ourselves as well over the albums that we have done, some more than others but they all serve a purpose. But I know our music is not for everyone, so that folks like it is a bonus, as that is not a matter of cause, because I’m pretty egoistic about what I try to get across in my music. But to your question, I think we still stay true to what we started out, but of course new stuff will be different in some way.

Your next moves?
Right now we will have to see when the world opens up for bands to do touring again, but I guess it still will take some time to recover and get the situation under control, and we may have to see a vaccine ready first. But we really want to get out and do some touring again and promote our stuff. Maybe we try to set up a live streaming concert from our studio or livingroom, I don’t know, but maybe something personal that we can invite our fans who would like to see something like that, and invite them into our sphere for something special in these times of no touring going on.
