The Great Kat ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte all’età di 7 anni e il violino all’età di 9 dopo aver ascoltato Beethoven sin dalla nascita. Dopo essere diventata rapidamente un virtuoso del violino, ho vinto una borsa di studio per studiare il violino alla Juilliard School e mi sono laureata con lode. Ho girato gli Stati Uniti, l’Inghilterra e il Messico come solista di violino classico e ho suonato per dignitari, come il governatore Oscar Flores Tapia a Saltillo, Coahuila in Messico e per il sindaco Ed Koch alla Gracie Mansion di New York City. Il Governatore Mario Cuomo ha conferito a The Great Kat (Katherine Thomas) il certificato di merito come “Destinatario del premio Palma Julia de Burgos in riconoscimento dei suoi eccezionali risultati musicali”. Katherine Thomas (The Great Kat) ha ricevuto un violino tedesco realizzato nel 1850 dalla Friends of Mozart Society. Ho vinto il concorso internazionale per violinisti e mi sono esibita alla Carnegie Recital Hall come violino solista. Come compositore, ho iniziato a cercare di aggiornare la musica classica con la musica popolare moderna. Ho incontrato Timothy Leary, un amico di famiglia e famoso professore di psicologia di Harvard e guru della psicologia applicata e abbiamo collaborato alla scrittura della canzone rock “Right Brain Lover”. Timothy Leary ha scritto i testi psichedelici selvaggi e io ho composto la musica e suonato il violino elettrico. Abbiamo registrato questa canzone mai pubblicata – i “Timothy Leary Papers”, conservati negli archivi pubblici di New York, contengono la canzone “Right Brain Lover” di Timothy Leary e Kat Thomas (The Great Kat). http://archives.Nypl.Org/mss/18400#c759755. Dopo la musica classica, mi sono imbattuta nell’heavy metal e ho capito che Beethoven è stato in realtà il primo metalhead, Paganini è stata la prima rock star e che metal e musica classica sono una combinazione perfetta! È stato allora che ho scelto la chitarra elettrica ed è nata The Great Kat!
Hai preso lezioni o sei stato autodidatta e quando ti sei resa conto di essere più dotata dei tuoi coetanei?
The Great Kat (Katherine Thomas) ha studiato violino, teoria, composizione, orchestra, musica da camera, direzione d’orchestra, storia della musica, solfeggio e molto altro alla scuola di Juilliard! Sono stato il primo violino dell’orchestra pre-college Juilliard, dove ho diretto un’intera orchestra sinfonica di altri musicisti di talento! Ho sempre saputo che The Great Kat era una dea immortale per il fatto che The Great Kat è la reincarnazione di Beethoven ed è impegnata in un viaggio senza sosta per fr rivivere il genio dei grandi compositori: Beethoven, Mozart, Rossini, Paganini, Bach e altri!
Perché preferisci essere una solista e non la leader di una band?
Chi se ne frega di guidare qualche band metal antica e antiquata, quando The Great Kat è l’unica rivoluzionaria in ambito musicale dai tempi Wagner, è qui per svegliarti, darti energia e stupirti con potenti creazioni classical shred! Inginocchiatevi!
Cosa ricordi dei giorni dei tuoi primi due album completi “Worship Me or Die!” (1987) e “Beethoven on Speed” (1990)?

Welcome Kat, what age did you start playing and why? Who did introduce you to violin and guitar? Was born first your love for classical music or for rock? And when did you decide to mix this two musical genres?

The Great Kat began playing piano at age 7 and violin at age 9 after listening to Beethoven since birth. After quickly becoming a violin virtuoso, i won a full violin scholarship to study at the Juilliard School and graduated with honors. I toured the U.S., england, and Mexico as a classical violin soloist and played for dignitaries, such as governor Oscar Flores Tapia in Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico and mayor Ed Koch at Gracie Mansion in New York city. Governor Mario Cuomo awarded the Great Kat (Katherine Thomas) the certificate of merit as “Recipient of the Palma Julia de Burgos award in recognition of her outstanding musical achievements”. Katherine Thomas (The Great Kat) was the recipient of a German violin made in 1850 from the Friends of Mozart Society. I won artists international competition on violin and performed at Carnegie Recital hall as violin soloist. As a composer, i began looking to update classical music with modern popular music. I met Timothy Leary, a family friend and the famous Harvard psychology professor and mind-altering guru and we collaborated on the rock song “Right Brain Lover”. Timothy Leary wrote the wild psychedelic lyrics and i composed the music and played the electric violin. We recorded this never-released song — see “Timothy Leary Papers” at the New York public ibrary archives & manuscripts features Timothy Leary & Kat Thomas’ (The Great Kat) “Right Brain Lover” song. http://archives.Nypl.Org/mss/18400#c759755. After classical, i came across heavy metal and realized that Beethoven was actually the first metalhead, Paganini was the first rock star and that metal & classical music were a perfect combination! That’s when i picked electirc guitar and The Great Kat was born!
Did you have lessons or were you self-taught and when did you realise that you were gifted above your peers?
The Great Kat (Katherine Thomas) studied violin, theory, composition, orchestra, chamber music, conducting, music history, solfege and much more at the juilliard school!! I was the concertmaster at the Juilliard pre-college orchestra where i led an entire symphony orchestra of other talented musicians! I always knew that The Great Kat was an immortal goddess due to the fact that The Great Kat is the reincarnation of Beethoven and on a non-stop journey to wake you up to the genius of the great composers: Beethoven, Mozart, Rossini, Paganini, Bach and more!
Why do you prefer to be the solo woman on the command and not the leader of a band?
Who cares about leading some old-fashioned out-of-date metal band, when The Great Kat is the only musical revolutionary since Wagner here to wake you up, energize you, and geniusize you with powerful shredclassical creations! On your knees!!!!!
What do you remember about the days of your first two full length – “Worship Me or Die!” (1987) and “Beethoven on Speed” (1990)?
As The New York Times famous article on The Great Kat & “Beethoven on Speed” during the “Beethoven on Speed” era states:
“The wave of the future might well be heavy-metal Beethoven by way of Juilliard. Ms. Kat’s ‘Beethoven on Speed’ album elevates furiousness to a would-be world view.
