Gli Iron Savior ultimamente hanno trovato un buon ritmo, con una cadenza quasi annuale pubblicano un nuovo album. Non fa eccezione questo sfortunato 2020, “Skycrest” (AFM Records) è qui a rallegrare i fan della band in questi giorni difficili.
Ciao Piet, dal 2014 pubblicate ogni anno un nuovo album in studio: “Rise of the Hero” (2014), “Megatropolis 2.20” (2015), “Titancraft” (2016), “Reforged – Riding on Fire” (2017), “Kill or Get Killed “(2019) e “Skycrest” (2020)! Come ti spieghi questo cambio di marcia dopo “The Landing”? Hai variato il tuo approccio alla composizione?
Beh, “Megatropolis” e “Reforged” non sono esattamente nuovi album in studio. “Megratropolis” è un remix di un album già esistente mentre “Reforged” contiene vecchie canzoni ri-registrate dei tempi della Noise. Ma sì, “Kill or Get Killed” e “Skycrest” sono piuttosto vicini l’uno all’altro. Dopo che “KOGK” è stato completato, ero ancora così eccitato che ho iniziato a scrivere canzoni solo poche settimane dopo averlo finito. Quindi già prima dell’autunno 2019 avevo le basi per quattro canzoni. Durante l’inverno ho scritto altre tre-quattro tracce e avevo già alcuni spunti per un altro paio. Poi è arrivata la devastante diagnosi di cancro del nostro bassista Jan e dopo è giunto il Covid19. Un periodo piuttosto buio in cui ho avuto molto tempo ma nessuna motivazione per fare musica. Quando a Jan è stato detto che sarebbe guarito al 100% e dopo che le cose sul Covid19 si sono un po’ rasserenate, ero di nuovo in fiamme e ho finito l’album in poche settimane. Ovviamente avremmo potuto aspettare fino al 2021 per pubblicare “Skycrest”, ma viste tutte le cose brutte che sono successe nel 2020 volevo che questo album positivo ed edificante uscisse nello stesso anno.
Non potrebbe essere un rischio pubblicare un nuovo album ogni anno? Il mondo della musica non vive la sua stagione migliore.
Sono d’accordo che la qualità è più preziosa della quantità, come Iron Savior siamo sempre stati molto critici con le nostre cose e non abbiamo mai fatto un brutto album. Ce ne sono alcuni migliori di altri, ma tutte le nostre uscite mantengono un certo standard di qualità. A parte questo, non penso che continueremo a fare nuovi album in studio così velocemente uno dopo l’altro come con “Skycrest”, ma ovviamente continueremo ad avere delle versioni speciali in mezzo. Ad esempio, il prossimo anno è il decimo anniversario di “The Landing” e anche “Reforged Vol2” è in cantiere
Più di 7.500.000 di persone hanno guardato in streaming “Heavy Metal Never Dies”: ti piace questo nuovo strumento di misura per il successo?
In realtà, in generale mi piacciono i servizi di streaming. Sono sicuro che riportino molte persone all’uso legale della musica. Se hai un abbonamento Spotify o Apple non vai più a siti torrent pirata. D’altra parte, la paga non è ancora adeguata. Questo è un retaggio dovuto al fatto che l’industria discografica per molti anni ha guardato ai servizi di streaming solo come strumenti promozionali per vendere i propri CD e quindi ha ceduto i diritti per pochi spiccioli… che devono essere corretti presto. In generale, gli abbonamenti fanno bene agli artisti, perché generano un reddito piuttosto costante.
Questo album è nato sotto l’influenza dell’emergenza Covid-19?
No! Assolutamente, no! Come ho sottolineato in precedenza, non ho lavorato all’album durante il primo blocco totale. L’intera situazione era semplicemente troppo deprimente, quindi non ero in grado di sedermi in studio e lavorare su canzoni edificanti e positive in stile Iron Savior. Inoltre, non volevo che la negatività in qualche modo si insinuasse nelle canzoni, quindi ho preferito fare una pausa invece di scrivere cose oscure e deprimenti.
Come sta Jan adesso?
Sta bene. Ovviamente ha ancora alcuni problemi da affrontare, ma il cancro è sconfitto. Si sta ancora riprendendo dalla chemioterapia, ma sta migliorando sempre più!
Ti piace inviare file avanti e indietro e lavorare in questo modo o desideri tornare ai bei vecchi tempi?
Entrambi vanno bene per me. Quando c’è poco tempo o grande distanza, l’invio di file avanti e indietro è un modo molto efficace. Per “Skycrest” siamo tornati a farlo alla vecchia maniera in studio. Inutile dire che per il gusto di farlo e per le “vibrazioni” questo è ancora il metodo migliore.
Hai dichiarato “Penso che” Skycrest “abbia tutte le potenzialità per diventare uno dei migliori album che gli Iron Savior abbiano mai pubblicato ed è in linea con momenti salienti della nostra carriera come l’acclamato debutto omonimo, “Condition Red” e “The Landing” “. Perché sei così soddisfatto di questa versione?
Penso che la scrittura e gli arrangiamenti siano ok al 100%. Il suono è killer, la dinamicità e la gamma musicale sono perfette, l’album traspira tanta emozione ed energia… quando inizi ad ascoltalo ti cattura dalla prima nota fino a quando l’ultima svanisce.
“Iron Savior”, “Condition Red” e “The Landing” sono davvero i tuoi migliori album?
I miei migliori allumi sono: “Iron Savior”, “Unification”, “Interlude”, “Dark Assault”, “Condition Red”, “Battering Ram”, “Megatropolis”, “The Landing”, “Rise Of The Hero”, “Titancraft”, “Kill or Get Killed” e “Skycres”.
Dopo l’uscita del debutto pensavi che saresti stato ancora qui dopo quasi 25 anni con il tuo 13° album in studio?
No… il primo album è stato fatto con l’idea che sarebbe rimasto principalmente un “sound-guy”. Ho realizzato il primo per dimostrare a me stesso che ero in grado di farlo. Che questo sarebbe stato l’inizio di una carriera non mi era venuto in mente.
Recently Iron Savior have recently found a good rhythm, with an almost annual cadence they release a new album. This unfortunate 2020 is no exception, “Skycrest” (AFM Records) is here to make happy the band’s fans in these difficult days.
Hi Piet, from 2014 you every year release a new studio album: “Rise of the Hero” (2014) , “Megatropolis 2.20” (2015), “Titancraft” (2016), “Reforged – Riding on Fire” (2017), “Kill or Get Killed” (2019) and “Skycrest” (2020)! How can you explain this change of gear after “The Landing”? Did you change your approach to the composition?
Well, “Megatropolis” and “Reforged” are not exactly new studio albums. “Megratropolis” was a remix of an existing album while “Reforged” containes of re-recorded old songs from the Noise days. But yes, “Kill or get Killed” and “Skycrest” are rather close to each other. After “KOGK” was done, I was still so energized that I started to write songs only a few weeks after finishing up. So already before autumn 2019 I had the basis for 4 songs. During winter I wrote 3-4 more songs and already had some bits and peaces for a couple of more songs. Then came the devastating cancer diagnose of our bassist Jan and after that came Covid19… This was a rather dark period where I had a lot of time but no motivation at all to do music. When Jan was told that he will get cured by 100% and after that the Covid19 stuff cleared up a bit, I was on fire again and finished the album up in just a few weeks. Of course we could have waited until 2021 to release “Skycrest”, but because all of the bad stuff that happened in 2020 I wanted this positive and uplifting album to happen in the very same year.
Couldn’t be a risk to release a new album every year? The music business does not live its better season.
I agree that quality is more valuable than quantity… with Iron Savior we have always been really critical with our stuff and never did a bad album. There are some better than others, but all of our releases do have a certain quality standard. Besides that I don’t think that we will continue to have new studio albums so fast after each other like with “Skycrest”, but of course we will continue to have special releases in between. For example next year is the 10th anniversary of “The Landing” and “Reforged Vol2” is in the pipeline as well
More than 7.5000,000 times people streamed “Heavy Metal Never Dies”: do you like this new measuring instrument for the success?
Actually in general I do like those streaming services. I’m sure that it brings back a lot of people to legal usage of music. If you have a Spotify or Apple subscription you don’t go to spooky torrent sites any more. On the other hand the pay is still not adequate. This goes back to the record industry who for long years only looked at streaming services as promotional tools to sell their CD’s and therefore gave the rights away for small change… that needs to be corrected soon. In general subscriptions are good for artists, because generates a rather constant income.
Is this album born under the influence of the Covid-19 emergency?
No! Completely not! As I pointed out earlier, I didn’t work on the album during the first strickt lockdown. The whole situation was just too depressing, so I was unable to sit in the studio and work on uplifting and positive Iron Savior songs. I also didn’t want any negativity to somehow find its way into the songs, so I rather paused instead of doing dark and depressive stuff.
How is Jan now?
He is doing fine. Of course he still has some issues he has to deal with, but the cancer itself is beaten. He is still recovering from the chemotherapy, but it’s getting better and better!!!
Are you okay with sending files back and forth and working that way or do you wish for the good old days?
Both is fine for me. When there is little time or big distance involved, sending files back an forth is a very effective way. For “Skycrest” we came back to do it the old fashioned way in the studio. Needless to say that for the fun of it and the “vibes” this is still the best method.
You have declared “I think “Skycrest” has all the potentials to become one of the best albums that Iron Savior have ever released and it alines with highlights such as the highly acclaimed self-titled debut, “Condition Red” and “The Landing””. Why are you so satisfied of this release?
I think the songwriting and arrangements is just 100% on spot. The sound is killer, the dynamics and musical range is perfect, the album breathes so much emotion and energy… when you start listening to the album it will capture you from the very first note until the last one fades out.
Are really “Iron Savior”, “Condition Red” and “The Landing” your best albums?
My best alums are: “Iron Savior”, “Unification”, “Interlude”, “Dark Assault”, “Condition Red”, “Battering Ram”, “Megatropolis”, “The Landing”, “Rise Of The Hero”, “Titancraft”, “Kill Or Get Killed” and “Skycrest”.
After the release of the debut did you think you were here after almost 25 years with your 13th studio album?
No, the first album was done under the idea that I will remain mainly a “sound-guy“. I did the first one to prove to myself, that I am capable of doing it. That this would be the ignition of this career never came to my mind.
