Molto tempo fa, in una galassia lontana chiamata Paesi Bassi, tre ragazzi hanno creato un trio originariamente conosciuto come Distillator. Dopo aver pubblicato un paio di album di thrash old school, la band ha cambiato nome in Cryptosis e sonorità, passando al death metal. La prima uscita di questa nuova creatura futuristica è “Bionic Swarm” (Century Media), uno dei migliori album di sci-fi extreme metal degli ultimi anni.
Benvenuti ragazzi, per chi non l’ha ancora sentito, potreste descrivere il suono di Cryptosis con parole vostre?
Laurens (Houvast – voce e chitarra): I Cryptosis sono una band progressive metal con influenze di thrash, black e symphonic metal. Ci piace chiamarlo Multi-Metal, poiché è una combinazione di molti sottogeneri. Nel nostro album di debutto “Bionic Swarm” individuerete il nostro DNA thrash combinato con un’ampia varietà di influenze. È stato pubblicato il 26 marzo su Century Media Records in tutto il mondo! Disponibile in LP, CD e cassetta.
Come nascono i vostri nuovi brani? Avete cambiato il vostro processo di scrittura rispetto ai tempi dei Distillator?
Frank (te Riet – basso e mellotron): Il processo è rimasto lo stesso, ma abbiamo sperimentato molto con il suono. Laurens e io raccogliamo spunti sui nostri telefoni sempre e ovunque. Ogni settimana trasformiamo queste piccole idee in versioni migliori nei nostri home studio con un computer, una batteria e un suono di chitarra adeguato. Questo dà agli altri ragazzi della band una buona visione di massima di come potrebbe evolversi quell’idea. Salviamo tutte queste bozze in un database in cui raccogliamo centinaia di riff e progressioni di accordi che potrebbero potenzialmente finire nell’album. Il passo successivo è scegliere il meglio di quelle idee e iniziare a scrivere canzoni. Il resto della scrittura continua piano piano fino a quando il puzzle non è finito. Oltre a questo, scriviamo anche molti riff extra da usare come “collante” tra i migliori tra quelli salvati nel database. Non tutti i riff che scriviamo vengono utilizzati. Ne abbiamo molti rimasti inutilizzati dalle sessioni di songwriting di “Bionic Swarm”. Non usare un riff non è necessariamente una perdita di tempo, dal momento che puoi imparare qualcosa anche da quello che hai scartato. È bene avere una visione chiara di cosa sia una buona o una cattiva idea in termini di scrittura di canzoni. Solo il tempo ci dirà se li useremo per il prossimo album.
“Decypher” è la prima canzone scritta dai Cryptosis?
Laurens: Molte delle canzoni dell’album sono state scritte parallelamente l’una all’altra. “Decypher” non è stata la prima, né l’ultima canzone che abbiamo scritto. “Conjuring the Egoist” e “Mindscape” hanno parti che abbiamo scritto nel 2018, ma sono state le ultime canzoni ad essere finite.
Che mi dite del tuo vostro singolo “Death Technology”?
Frank: “Death Technology” è stata una delle ultime canzoni che abbiamo completato perché contiene davvero tanti tecnicismi.
Quando è nato il vostro amore per la fantascienza e quando avete deciso di esprimerlo con la vostra musica?
Laurens: Sono sempre stato un fan del genere fantascientifico. Ricordo di essere rimasto completamente sbalordito da Star Wars quando l’ho visto al cinema da bambino a 8 anni. L’idea di integrare la fantascienza nella nostra musica è nata quando stavamo scrivendo l’ultimo split dei Distillator. I primi due concept album dei Distillator riguardavano il passato e il presente. Mancava il futuro per completare il trittico.
Venite dai Paesi Bassi, uno dei più importanti album metal di fantascienza della storia viene dal vostro Paese, “Spheres” dei Pestilence. Quesl disco è una delle vostre influenze?
Frank: E’ il mio album preferito dei Pestilence. Mi piacciono molto gli elementi progressivi combinati con il death e la fusion. Non abbiamo preso quel disco come riferimento o esempio per “Bionic Swarm”. Per questo album non abbiamo preso nessun esempio di quel tipo
Che mi dite del tour con i Vektor?
Laurens: Dopo aver deciso di pubblicare un EP condiviso, è nata l’idea di pianificare un tour europeo insieme. Purtroppo è stato cancellato a causa del Covid. Tuttavia, la nostra agenzia ha in programma di riorganizzare il tour nel 2022. Quindi speriamo di tornare a pieno regime l’anno prossimo!
Avete paura di fare un tour durante l’emergenza pandemica?
Frank: Non abbiamo paura di andare in tour a causa del virus, ci spaventano di più gli spettacoli che vengono cancellati all’ultimo minuto. L’autobus, l’equipaggio e il carburante devono essere pagati anche se non si tiene uno spettacolo. Questo rende i tour attualmente un grosso rischio finanziario. Non solo per le band, ma anche per i promotori e i festival.
Come è cambiata la vostra carriera dopo l’accordo con Century Media?
Laurens: Dopo aver finito di registrare questo album, ne abbiamo dato una copia al nostro manager Roman Hödl. Era il marzo 2020, l’inizio della crisi pandemica. Immaginavamo che nessuna etichetta sana di mente avrebbe firmato e investito in una band in quel momento. Sorprendentemente, poche settimane dopo abbiamo saputo che la Century Media Records era interessata a concludere un accordo. Nessuno nella band aveva mai firmato con una major prima d’ora, quindi eravamo davvero entusiasti di questo. Subito dopo aver ottenuto il contratto, stavamo parlando di cose che volevamo fare da molto tempo, ma non abbiamo mai avuto i mezzi finanziari per farlo. Il nostro primo singolo “Decypher” ha un video che è l’esempio perfetto. Abbiamo sempre voluto realizzare un videoclip con animazioni 3D epiche. La Century Media ci ha dato ulteriore fiducia in tempi incerti.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far call Netherlands, three boys created a trio originally known as Distillator. After released two albums of old-school thrash, the band changed name in Cryptosis and sound form thrash to death metal. The first release of this new futuristic creature is a “Bionic Swarm” (Century Media), one of the best sci-fi extreme metal albums in recent years.
Welcome, for anyone who has not heard it yet, could you describe Cryptosis sound in your own words?
Laurens (Houvast – vocals and guitars): Cryptosis is a progressive metal band with influences of thrash-, black- and symphonic metal. We like to name it Multi-Metal, since it’s a combination of many subgenres. On our debut album “Bionic Swarm” you will hear strong thrash DNA combined with a wide variety of influences. It was released on March 26th through Century Media Records worldwide! Available in LP, CD and cassette tape.
How are born your new tracks? Did you change your writing process from Distillator times?
Frank (te Riet – bass and mellotron) : The process has stayed the same, but we have experimented a lot with sound. Laurens and me collecting ideas on our phones anytime, anywhere. Every week we’re turning those little ideas into high-end versions in our simple home studios with a drumcomputer and proper guitar sound. This gives the other guys in the band a pretty good impression of where that idea might go. We save all these ideas in a riff database in which we will collect hundreds of riffs and chord progressions that might potentially end up on the album. The next step is to pick the very best of those ideas and start writing songs. The rest of the album songwriting follows bit by bit until the puzzle is finished. Apart from that, we also write a lot of extra riffs to use as “glue” between the best riffs from the database. Not all the riffs we write are used. We have a lot of unused riffs left from the BIONIC SWARM songwriting sessions. To not use a riff if not necessarily a waste of time, since you can also learn from this. It’s good to get a clear vision of what’s a good or bad idea in terms of songwriting. Only the future will tell if we will use these for the next album.
Is “Decypher” the first song written by Cryptosis?
Laurens: A lot of the songs on the album were written in parallel to each other. “Decypher” was not the first, nor the last song that we wrote. “Conjuring the Egoist” and “Mindscape” have parts in them that we wrote back in 2018, but were one the last songs to finish.
What’s about your new single “Death Technology”?
Frank: “Death Technology” was one of the last songs to finish because it has so many technicalities in it.
When is born your love for Science fiction and when did you decide to express this love with your music?
Laurens: I have always been a fan of the science fiction genre. I remember that I was completely blown away by Star Wars when I watched this in the cinema as an 8 year old kid. The idea of integrating sci-fi in our music occurred when we were writing the last Distillator split album. The first 2 concept albums of Distillator were about the past and the present. The future only needed to be added to complete the triptych.
You are from Netherland, one of the most important Sci-fi metal album in the history is from your Country, “Spheres” by Pestilence. Is this album one of your influences?
Frank: It’s my favorite Pestilence album. I really like the progressive elements in combination with death and fusion. We did not take this album as a reference or example for “Bionic Swarm”. For this album we did not take any example for that matter.
What’s about your tour with Vektor?
Laurens: After we decided to release a split EP, the idea rose to plan a European tour together. Unfortunately it has been cancelled due to Covid. However, our agency has plans to reorganize the tour in 2022. So we hope to be back in full force next year!
Are you afraid to tour during the pandemic emergency?
Frank: We are not afraid to tour because of the virus, but more afraid of shows that are getting cancelled last minute. The bus, crew and fuel needs to be paid also if a show doesn’t take place. This makes touring currently a big financial risk. Not only for bands, but for promoters and festivals as well.
How is changed your career after the deal with Century Media?
Laurens comments: After we finished recording this album, we gave a copy to our manager Roman Hödl. It was march 2020, the beginning of the pandemic crisis. We imagined no label in their right mind was going to sign and invest in a band at this time. Surprisingly, a few weeks later we got word that Century Media Records was interested in talking a deal. Nobody in the band was ever signed to a major label before, so we were really stoked about this. Immediately after we got the contract, we were talking about stuff that we wanted to do for a long time, but never had the financial means to do so. Our first single “Decypher” has a video which is the perfect example. We always wanted to do a video clip with epic 3D animations. Century Media gave us extra confidence in uncertain times by signing the band.
