“Vandring” (Osmose Productions) è il capitolo finale della Black Death Trilogy composta dai Nattverd. La saga si conclude con l’album più aggressivo, malinconico ed epico di questo concept sull’epidemia che colpì la Norvegia nel 1349.

Benvenuto Ormr, con il nuovo album “Vandring” la vostra Black Death Trilogy, iniziata con l’EP “Skuggen”, si conclude. Sei soddisfatto di questa ultima pubblicazione?
Sì, siamo molto soddisfatti della nostra ultima fatica “Vandring”.

Quando avete iniziato la Black Death Trilogy, il vostro obbiettivo finale era ben chiaro?
Abbiamo avuto una visione quando abbiamo iniziato a lavorare sull’EP “Skuggen”, dovevamo fare un resoconto sulla peste nera che colpì la Norvegia nel 1349, e abbiamo deciso dall’inizio che sarebbe durata tre capitoli, quindi tutti i testi di “Skuggen”, “Styggdom” e “Vandring” sono stati scritti prima della registrazione del primo dei tre.

Potresti riassumere brevemente il concept della trilogia?
“Skuggen”, che significa ombre, era basato sull’ombra che si stava manifestando, strisciando lentamente nella mente di tutti. Si basa sulla paura che le cose stiano cambiando in peggio. La peste sta arrivando. “Styggdom”, si occupa del cuore dell’epidemia di peste. L’infezione, le leggende e le superstizioni che circondavano la morte nera. Tutti ne avevano paura a causa del cristianesimo. “Vandring”, che significa vagare, è il capitolo conclusivo, in cui la peste lascia libere le nostre terre. Tutto abbandonato nella distruzione, nella morte.

Il suono di questo ultimo capitolo è molto aggressivo, malinconico ed epico, dove avete trovato l’ispirazione per questo album?
Abbiamo registrato “Vandring” addirittura prima del rilascio di “Styggdom”, per mantenere coesa l’atmosfera del nostro concept. “Vandring” sin dall’inizio è stato concepito per essere più brutale, malinconico e vario. L’ispirazione per l’album è arrivata dall’idea di base su cui abbiamo lavorato e dai dipinti di Theodor Kittilsen.

Per i futuri album possiamo aspettarci un’evoluzione in linea con questo tipo di suono o proverete a fare qualcosa di diverso? Il prossimo disco farà parte di una nuova saga o trilogia?
Beh, in realtà abbiamo già registrato il nostro prossimo album, ed è il nostro secondo senza concept. Il primo “Vi vet gud er en Løgner”, non era un concept, né faceva parte di un qualcosa. Quindi, riteniamo che un nuovo capitolo nella storia della band si stia in qualche modo aprendo. Suona ancora molto Nattverd, ma sì… è vario e abbiamo provato un paio di nuove cose, che hanno funzionato molto bene. No, non stiamo iniziando una nuova trilogia con il nostro prossimo album.

Il primo capitolo è stato pubblicato dalla Darker than Black Records, gli ultimi due dalla Osmose Production: c’è la possibilità futura di vedere un boxset che includa i tre album?
In futuro, direi di sì, prima o poi faremo un cofanetto di questo concept!

Quattro membri su cinque sono gli stessi dell’EP “Skuggen”, perché avete avuto qualche problema con i batteristi in questi anni?
In realtà non abbiamo avuto problemi con i batteristi. Nel nostro primo album Serpentr, che ora è alle chitarre e alla voce, ha suonato la batteria. Quando è passato definitivamente alla chitarra e abbiamo registrato “Skuggen”, volevamo che ci fosse con noi Skjolden nell’EP, che è un buon amico, e ha suonato la batteria nei Fester, per ottenere un’atmosfera anni novanta. Antichristian si era già unito noi e aveva lavorato alla batteria su “Styggdom”. Quindi, in realtà abbiamo ancora tutti i batteristi con noi, eccetto Skjolden, che ha suonato solo sull’EP “Skuggen”, come session.

Mixare / masterizzare il nuovo album. E poi salire sul palco, il prima possibile!

Welcome Ormr, with the new album “Vandring” your Black Death Trilogy, started with the EP “Skuggen”, is closed. Are you satisfied of this new release?
Yes, we feel very satisfied with our latest release “Vandring”.

When you started the Black Death Trilogy was your final goal well clear?
We had a vision when we started the EP “Skuggen”, to make a story of the black plague that hit Norway in 1349, and we decided early on three chapters, so all the lyrics for “Skuggen”, “Styggdom” and “Vandring” was written before the recording of the first.

Could you briefly summarize the concept of the trilogy?
“Skuggen” which means shadows, was based upon that a shadow was manifesting. Creeping slowly into the mind of everyone. It deals with the fear, that things are changing for the worse. The plague is is coming. “Styggdom”, deals with the center of the plague. The infection, the legends, and superstition that surrounded the black death. All fear in the name of Christianity. “Vandring” which means wander, is the closing chapter, where the plague leaves the lands. And all is left in destruction, death.

The sound of this last chapter is very aggressive, melancholic, epic end, where did you get your inspiration for this album?
We recorded “Vandring” even before “Styggdom” was released, to keep the feel of our concept. “Vandring” was always meant to be more brutal, melancholic and varied. The inspiration for the album was the concept we worked on, and the paintings of Theodor Kittilsen.

For future albums can we expect an evolution in the line of this kind of sound or will you try to do something different? The next record will be a part of a new saga or trilogy?
Well, we have actually recorded our next album already, and this album is our second without a concept. The first “Vi vet gud er en Løgner”, was not a concept, or part of anything. So, we feel a new chapter is somehow opening for Nattverd. It still sounds very Nattverd, but yes… it is varied, and we`ve tried a couple of new things, which has worked out extremely well. No, we`re not making a new trilogy with our next album.

The first chapter was released by Darker than Black Records, the last two by Osmose Production: is there a chance for a boxset including all the three albums?
For the future, I would say yes, at one point we will make a box set of this concept!

Four member on five are the same from “Skuggen” EP, why did you have some trouble with drummers in these years?
We actually didn`t have troubles with drummers. On our first album Serpentr, which now is on guitars, and did vocals play drums on “Vi Vet gud Er En Løgner”. When he changed fully to guitar, and we recorded “Skuggen”, we wanted to include Skjolden on the EP, who is a good friend, and played drums in Fester. To get that vibe of the nineties. Antichristian had then already joined, and worked on the drums for “Styggdom”. So, we actually still have all the drummers with us, exept Skjolden, who only played on the EP “Skuggen”, as a session drummer.

Next, is to mix/master the new album. And to get on stage, as soon as possible!
