I Phlebotomized negli anni ’90 hanno pubblicato diversi demo, EP e album ricchi di death metal brutale e melodico, caratterizzato da tastiere e violini. Dopo lo scioglimento nel 1997, la band si è riformata nel 2013. Dopo due anni dall’uscita di “Deformation Of Humanity”, i Phlebotomized tornano con l’EP “Pain, Resistance, Suffering” (Petrichor), sette canzoni di ipnotizzante death metal melodico.

Benvenuto Tom, dopo 31 anni di carriera possiamo considerare questa nuova uscita è il vostro manifesto definitivo?
Ciao, penso che solo il tempo lo potrà dire.

Avete confermato la stessa formazione del vostro album precedente, “Deformation of Humanity”, . Che vantaggi hai ottenuto lavorando con lo stesso team?
Ha sicuramente facilitato il modo in cui abbiamo lavorato insieme! Questa formazione è stabile da quattro anni. Abbiamo fatto concerti, registrazioni e prove insieme. Ci conosciamo, siamo ben sincronizzati. Conosciamo i nostri punti di forza e di debolezza.

Sei ancora soddisfatto dell’album “Deformation of Humanity” ?
Sono ancora soddisfatto di tutti i nostri album. Certo, dopo qualche anno puoi sentire piccole imperfezioni grazie a un maggiore distacco emotivo. Qualcosa che non puoi fare facilmente quando sei nel pieno di un processo creativo. Un certo distacco aiuta a fare meglio durante la creazione di un nuovo album.

“Pain, Resistance, Suffering” sembra il nome di un album hardcore, c’è una connessione tra la storia della tua band, tornata dopo una lunga pausa, e questo titolo?
No, non direttamente. È un riflesso del nostro io interiore. Tutti soffrono per i propri pensieri tristi. La resistenza a questa sofferenza causa dolore. È un postulato del boedismo zen. Dolore = resistenza vs sofferenza.

Hai scritto tutte le tracce incluse in “Pain, Resistance, Suffering” per questo nuovo EP o alcune canzoni provengono dalle session di di “Deformation of Humanity” ?
Si Certamente. Non è rimasto niente delle sessioni di “Deformation Of Humanity”. “It Will Pass …” è del 2019/20. “Beheaded Identity” è del 2016 ed è stato riarrangiato nel 2020. Le altre canzoni sono state scritte nel 2005/2006. Create originariamente immaginandola con una chitarra, un basso e una batteria. Troppo bella per essere inutilizzato. Abbiamo riarrangiato quelle canzoni secondo gli standard dei Phlebotomized .

Il vostro primo album, “Immense Intense Suspense”, è considerato un classico del death metal, ma è il tuo album preferito dei Phlebotomized?
Difficile a dirsi! Fino ad ora penso che il mio preferito sia “Immense” perché contiene la maggior parte delle canzoni a cui tengo di più: “Barricade”, “Dubbed Forswearer”, “Mellow are the Reverberations”, “Gone…” Canzoni come “Deformation of Humanity” e “Desideratum” da “DOF”; “Beheaded Identity” dal nuovo EP sono tra le mie migliori creazioni dei Phlebotomized.

Fin dai vostri primi giorni avete incluso nella vostra musica violino e tastiere, come è nata l’idea di sfruttare degli strumenti non proprio convenzionali in ambito death metal?
Il nostro ex batterista e paroliere Lawrence Payne ha avuto questa idea. Conosceva Ben Quak (tastiere 1990-1997) e Maarten Post (violino 1992-1996 e 2013-2017). Aveva in mente alcune linee melodiche, ha provato con quei ragazzi e ha funzionato! L’album dei Nocturnus “The Key” è stata la nostra principale influenza nell’usare le tastiere, anche se le sfruttiamo in modo diverso.

Guardandoti indietro, hai dei rimpianti?
Sì, lasciare la band nel 1997 e scioglierla per 16 anni. Mi rammarico anche del fatto che all’inizio della nostra esistenza non abbiamo preso in considerazione offerte di tour.

Sei pronto a tornare sul palco dopo l’emergenza pandemica?
Ebbene, siamo tutti consapevoli del fatto che tra poco sarà possibile farlo. Per questo lentamente stiamo provando il set che vorremo suonare. WE HAVE TO… WE WANNA PLAY LIVE!

Phlebotomized during the 90’s released several demos, EP’s and full length albums full of brutal yet melodic death metal laced with keyboards and violins. Disbanding in 1997 the band reformed in 2013. After two year from the release of “Deformation Of Humanity”, Phlebotomized back with “Pain, Resistance, Suffering” EP (Petrichor), seven songs of mesmerizing melodic death metal.

Welcome Tom, after 31 years is this new release  your definitive manifesto?
Hi, I think time will tell.

The same line-up  of your previous album, “Deformation of Humanity”,  was confirmed on “Pain, Resistance, Suffering”.  How much benefit did you get from working with the same team?
It definitely helped in how we worked together! This line up is steady for four years. We did gigs, recordings and rehearsels together. We know each other, we feel each others  timing. We know our strengths and weaknesses.

Are you still satisfied of “Deformation of Humanity” album?
I’m still satisfied about all of our albums. Sure, after a few years you can hear little things because of the distance you can keep. Something you can not do easily when you are in the middle of a process. The distance helps in doing better every time during the creation of a new album.

“Pain, Resistance, Suffering” seams an hardcore album name, is there  a connection between the history of your band, back after a long hiatus , and this title?
No, not directly. It is a reflection of our inner selves. Everybody suffer from their thoughts. Our resistance to this suffering is causing pain. It is a term in Zen Boedhism. Pain = resistance vs suffering.

Did you write all the tracks included in “Pain, Resistance, Suffering” for this new EP or some songs are from  “Deformation Of Humanity” session?
Yes indeed.  There is nothing left from the 2Deformation Of Humanity2 sessions.  2It Will Pass…2 is from 2019/20. 2Beheaded Identity2 is from 2016 and is rearranged in 2020. The other songs are written in 2005/2006. Originally written with one guitar, bass, drums in mind. To good to be unused. We re-arranged those songs to Phlebotomized standards.

Your first  album, “Immense Intense Suspense”, is considerate a classic of death metal, but is your favourite album by Phlebotomized?
Difficult to say! Till now I think my favourite is Immense because it contains the most songs I deeply care for: “Barricade”, 2Dubbed Forswearer”, “Mellow are the Reverberations”, “Gone…”. Songs like “Deformation of Humanity”, “Desideratum”, (“D.O.F.” album) “Beheaded Identity” (new E.P.) are in my top of Phlebotomized songs.

Since your early days you included in your music violin and keyboards, how was born the idea to include unconventional  death metal instrument? 
Our former drummer and lyricsist Lawrence Payne came up with those ideas. He knew Ben Quak (keys 1990-1997) and Maarten Post (violin 1992-1996 and 2013-2017). He had some melody lines in mind, rehearsed with those guys and it clicked! The Nocturnus album ‘The Key’ was our main influence to use keys though we use(d) it differently.

Looking back,  do you have any regrets?
Yes, quitting the band in 1997 and disbanding it for 16 years. I also regret the fact that we didn’t take offers like tours in consideration in the beginning of our existence.

Are you ready to back on stage after the pandemic emergency?
Well, everybody is aware of the fact that within a while more will be possible. So slowly everybody is rehearsing the set that we want to play. WE HAVE TO… WE WANNA PLAY LIVE!
