Ciao Mika, vorrei iniziare la nostra intervista con un tuo ricordo su Alexi Laiho, morto alla fine del 2020 ed ex membro della formazione di “Nihil”….
Una notizia scioccante. Davvero una perdita enorme per la scena metal finlandese. Era un ragazzo assolutamente fantastico e un chitarrista incredibile. Non abbiamo altro che bei ricordi di lui e del suo periodo con gli Impaled Nazarene. Era molto umile; il successo non gli ha mai dato alla testa. Sono orgoglioso del fatto che sia stato un nostro membro. Ci ha resi giocatori migliori, è un dato di fatto. È stato fantastico quando gli stavamo insegnando le nostre nuove canzoni, ha immediatamente capito come sarebbe andato il resto della canzone. Poteva suonare tutto. Uno dei più bei ricordi è quando abbiamo fatto un festival nel New Jersey, negli Stati Uniti. Siamo rimasti un paio di giorni, quindi abbiamo avuto del tempo libero. Stavamo bevendo birre nella nostra camera d’albergo e dicevamo ad Alexi: suona questa canzone, suona quella canzone. Da Van Halen a Slayer. E guardavamo e ascoltavamo con soggezione mentre suonava di tutto.
“Eight Headed Serpent”, sarà pubblicato da Osmose Production il 28 maggio 2021. Dopo tutti questi anni sei ancora eccitato prima della data di uscita del tuo nuovo album?
Adesso più che mai! Questo album è pronto dallo scorso settembre, quindi non vediamo l’ora di farlo uscire. È un album fottutamente forte, copre perfettamente la nostra intera carriera. Non potremmo essere più soddisfatti. E aspetta di vedere il layout finale. Ha il miglior paginone centrale di sempre. La busta interna apribile e non solo…
La pausa tra “Vigorous and Liberating Death” e “Eight Headed Serpent” è la più lunga della vostra carriera, eri un po’ stufo degli Impaled Nazarene o era solo una pausa creativa?
Nessuno dei due. Non abbiamo avuto alcuna pausa. Abbiamo suonato molti spettacoli in tutti questi anni. Lavoriamo solo lentamente. Abbiamo iniziato a parlare del nuovo album tre o quattro anni fa, ma poi sono arrivati altri concerti. Abbiamo un lavoro quotidiano, quindi non viviamo nel luogo delle prove. Avevamo spettacoli e abbiamo provato i nostri live set. Poi andavamo a casa. Lentamente abbiamo iniziato a comporre nuovo materiale e lo scorso gennaio abbiamo capito di avere abbastanza roba. Poi è arrivata il Corona e non ci siamo visti fino a giugno. Abbiamo fatto due prove ed era chiaro che ricordavamo ogni canzone, quindi abbiamo prenotato subito lo studio.
Dall’album “Manifest” la formazione non è stata cambiata. Quanto è importante per te lavorare con la stessa squadra?
Estremamente importante. Ricorda che Repe Misanthrope è stato il nostro batterista dal 1995. Arc Basstard (basso) si è unito a noi nel 2000. UG si è unito nel 2007 ma era già stato un nostro chitarrista session dal 2000 al 2007. Ci conosciamo da oltre 20 anni e quindi lavoriamo come una solida unità.
Hai affrontato il nuovo album, “Eight Headed Serpent”, in modo diverso?
Quando abbiamo composto le canzoni, abbiamo utilizzato la nostra formula tipica. Tutti scrivono a casa, portano una nuova canzone pronta per le prove. Non abbiamo cambiato nulla per loro. Ho scritto la musica per tre canzoni, Arc ne ha scritte quattro, UG ne ha fatte tre e così ha fatto Repe. In studio, invece, abbiamo cercato un “feeling” live. Questa volta abbiamo utilizzato la traccia clic solo su due o tre brani, il resto è stato registrato senza clic. Negli ultimi due album tutti gli strumenti sono stati registrati separatamente, questa volta eravamo tutti lì dall’inizio. Ci siamo divertiti tantissimo in studio. Lavorare con Asko Ahikainen è stato davvero fluido. Aveva orecchie fresche per questo tipo di cose. Ha fatto un po’ di cose metal e punk ma non proprio con una band come la nostra. Per lo più musica finlandese di facile ascolto. E ha capito subito quello che stavamo cercando. All’inizio non avevamo intenzione di mixare l’album con lui, ma dopo il primo giorno gli abbiamo chiesto se fosse interessato a farlo. Anche il mastering di Mika Jussila è stata la ciliegina sulla torta. È chiaro che nel prossimo album useremo di nuovo la stessa squadra.
Chiude l’album “Foucault Pendulum”, non la classica canzone degli Impaled Nazarene: come è nata questa traccia e perché hai scelto questa canzone per chiudere l’uscita?
Questa è stata la seconda canzone (scritta da Repe) che abbiamo inciso per questo album ed è stato chiaro per me sin dall’inizio che questa sarebbe stata la traccia di chiusura. Proprio come era chiaro per me che questo album si sarebbe aperto con “Goat Of Mendes” (scritta da me). Non so se per “canzone classica” ti riferisci al tempo della canzone. Abbiamo già avuto tracce lente. L’idea è semplice, prima vomiti 12 canzoni da “calci in testa” e poi rallenti per l’inevitabile apocalisse.
Qual è la tua impressione della scena heavy metal odierna in termini di composizione, originalità, immagine e cose del genere?
Il fatto è che non seguo affatto nessuna scena. Di tanto in tanto guardo un po’ di merda su Youtube ma praticamente tutto è stato detto e fatto. Questa merda deathcore è così fottutamente orribile. O qualsiasi band “estrema” con voce pulita. Vedo post che dicono che i testi del death metal dovrebbero essere più belli. Tipo che cazzo, sul serio? Si chiama death metal per un motivo. Questa cultura / virtù generale che punta il dito contro la follia probabilmente colpirà presto un muro di mattoni e scomparirà. Più veloce è, meglio è. Fucking soyboy/pansy ass vegehippies, state fuori dal metal! Il metal è morte, aggressività, violenza, sangue, sesso! Nulla a che fare con i tuoi zuccherini, gentilezza e fottute stronzate tipo pro-tool / strumenti correzione automatica. In realtà, per rispondere alla tua domanda: il metal è in uno stato piuttosto triste in questo momento. Ridateci gli Slayer!
Quanto è difficile essere estremi e provocare nel 2021. Forse negli anni 90 era più facile di adesso, la gente oggi è così abituata ad ogni stranezza…
Questa è una domanda che ricevo spesso e lasciatemi chiarire una cosa: non siamo qui per provocare intenzionalmente. Non è una cosa tipo “Fanculo, ora dobbiamo fare una canzone che farà incazzare la gente”. Assolutamente no. Tutto ciò che facciamo è naturale, viene dal cuore. Siamo della vecchia scuola, siamo cresciuti con Motörhead, Venom, Sodom. I nostri temi sono sempre gli stessi e se non li sopporti, cazzo, stai lontano. La realtà è dura e addolcirla con le caramelle non farà la differenza. Metal till death !

Hi Mika, I’d like to start our interview with a your remembrance about Alexi Laiho, died at the end of 2020 and former member in the “Nihil” line-up….
It was shocking news. Really a huge loss for Finnish metal scene. He was absolutely cool guy and unbelievable guitarist. We have nothing but good memories about him and his time in Impaled Nazarene. He was very humble; success never went over his head. I am proud of the fact that he was member of us. He made us better players, it is a fact. It was amazing when we were teaching him our new songs, he pretty much figured how the rest of the song goes. He could play everything. One of the great memories is when we did this festival in New Jersey, USA. We stayed a couple of days, so we had free time. We were drinking beers at our hotel room and telling Alexi: Play this song, play that song. From Van Halen to Slayer. And watched and listened in awe as he played everything.
“Eight Headed Serpent”, will be released by Osmose Production on 28 May 2021. After all these years are you still excited before the release date of your new album?
Now more than ever! This album has been ready since last September, so we are eager to get this out. It is fucking strong album, it nails perfectly our whole career. We couldn´t be more satisfied. And wait till you see the final lay-out. It has the best centerfold ever. Gatefold inner sleeve is something else.
The hiatus between “Vigorous and Liberating Death” and “Eight Headed Serpent” is the longest of your career, were you a bit fed up with Impaled Nazarene or it was just a creative pause?
Neither. We did not have any pause. We have been playing shows all these years. We just work slowly. We did start talking about the new album like three or four years ago but then came more shows. We have a day-jobs so we do not live at our rehearsal place. We had shows and we rehearsed our live sets. Then we go home. Slowly we started composing new material and last year January we figured out we have enough material. Then came Corona and we did not see each other till June. We had two rehearsals and it was clear we remembered every song, so we booked studio right away.
From “Manifest” album the line-up was not changed. How important is for you to work with the same team?
Extremely important. Remember that Repe Misanthrope has been our drummer from 1995. Arc Basstard (bass) joined in 2000. UG joined in 2007 but was already before our session guitarist 2000-2007. We have known each other over 20 years and therefore we work as a solid unit.
Did you approach the new album, “Eight Headed Serpent”, differently?
When we composed songs, it was our typical formula. Everybody writes at home, brings a new, ready song for the rehearsals. We did not change anything on them. I wrote music for three songs, Arc wrote four, UG did three and so did Repe. In the studio, however, we were after the live “feel”. This time we used click track only on two or three songs, rest were recorded without click. Last two albums all instruments have been recorded separately, this time we were all there from the beginning. We had a blast in the studio. Working with Asko Ahikainen was really smooth. He had fresh ears for this. He has done some metal and punk but not really a band like us. Mostly Finnish easy listening music. And he got it right away what we were after. Originally we did not plan to mix the album with him but after the first day we asked him if he is interested to mix the album as well. Also Mika Jussila´s mastering was the icing on the cake. It is clear that on the next album we will use the same team again.
The album is closed by “Foucault Pendulum”, not the classic Impaled Nazarene song: how is born this track and why did you choose this song to close the release?
This was the second song (written by Repe) we rehearsed for this album and it was clear for me from the start that this will be the closing track. Just like it was clear for me that this album will open with Goat Of Mendes (written by me). I don´t know if by “classic song” you refer to tempo of the song. We have had slow tracks before. The whole idea is simple, first you have 12 songs of “kick your head in” and then you slow down for the inevitable apocalypse.
What is your impression of the heavy metal scene these days when it comes to songwriting, originality, image and stuff like that?
The thing is that I do not follow any scene at all. From time to time I see some shit on youtube but pretty much everything has been said and done. This deathcore shit is just so fucking awful. Or any clean vocals “extreme” band. I see posts saying death metal lyrics should be more nice. Like what a fuck, seriously? It is called death metal for a reason. This overall cancel culture/virtue signaling madness will probably hit a brick wall soon and disappear. Faster the better. Fucking soyboy/pansy ass vegehippies, stay the fuck out of metal! Metal is death, aggression, violence, blood, sex! Not your fucking soybeans and kindness and fucking pro-tools/autocorrect bullshit. Actually, to answer your question: Metal is in a pretty sad state right now. Bring back Slayer!
How much difficult is to be extreme and to provoke in 2021. Maybe, in the 90 was easier than now, the people today is so used to every oddity…
This is a question I get a lot and let me clarify one thing: We are not here to provoke intentionally. It is not like “Fuck, we have to now do a song that will piss people off”. Absolutely not. Everything we do is natural, comes from the heart. We are old school, we have been raised on Motörhead, Venom, Sodom. Our themes are the same and if you cannot fucking take it, then stay the fuck away. Reality is harsh and covering it with soybeans will not make a difference. Metal till death!
