Gli Edge of Paradise hanno pubblicato il loro quarto album in studio “The Unknown” (Frontiers Music) lo scorso settembre, abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistare Margarita Monet per farci raccontare qualcosa sulla sua carriera.
Ciao Margherita, benvenuta su Il Raglio del Mulo, è un vero piacere di averti qui. Quando è iniziata l’avventura di Margarita nel mondo del metal?.
Ciao e grazie mille per avermi contattata! Beh, la vita mi ha portato in questa direzione. Da piccola suonavo il pianoforte classico, facevo teatro e mi dedicavo al balletto, quindi il metal non era minimante nei miei pensieri. Quando mi sono trasferita a Los Angeles da New York, dove ho studiato teatro e musica, ho incontrato il chitarrista Dave Bates. E Dave suona rock e metal da una vita. Condividevamo passione e grinta, e avevamo la volontà di creare qualcosa di nostro, a cui dedicare tutta le nostre energie! Le canzoni che abbiamo iniziato a scrivere insieme, si sono trasformate in quello che sono oggi nel corso degli anni. Io sempre amato l’epic, la musica sinfonica e, dal momento che Dave suonava la chitarra, il suo stile heavy ci ha condotto nel rock/metal. Ma sinceramente, mai avrei immaginato di avere una band, la vita a volte ti guida in modi misteriosi!
Com’è fare metal in Europa e cosa significa far parte di una grande band come gli Edge of Paradise? A un certo punto hai mai pensato di mollare tutto e continuare con una vita normale?
La nostra sede è a Los Angeles, negli Stati Uniti, ed essere un musicista qui non è una cosa facile. Sembra che in Europa e in alcune altre parti del mondo la musica abbia molto più supporto! Qui, hai davvero bisogno di costruiti tutto da zero, oltre ad essere il migliore musicista possibile, devi essere un uomo d’affari intelligente, sapere come venderti, e in qualche modo raccattare i soldi da investire nel progetto. In questi giorni non ci sono molte etichette che fanno firmare artisti da formare, vogliono che l’artista abbia già una una sua stabilità e che guadagni dei soldi. Per questo abbiamo prenotato da soli i nostri tour, fatto tutto da soli fino al nostro album “Universe”, che è uscito in 2019, da lì in poi abbiamo ricevuto il supporto di Frontiers. Quindi la strada è molto difficile, lunga, ma molto gratificante quando vedi che la musica fai ha un impatto positivo sulla vita di qualcuno. Personalmente non ho mai pensato che potesse accadere, ma oggi fa parte di ciò che sono, questa musica è diventata un’estensione di me stessa, ovviamente io ho brutte giornate, quando mi sento scoraggiata, ma sono fortunata ad avere Dave che è una roccia e mi spinge sempre ad andare avanti!
Quali sono i principali problemi che devono affrontare le band all’interno di una scena satura come quella metal?
Direi le mode. Noi siamo sempre rimasti fedeli al nostro suono, senza adattarci alle tendenze attuali che spopolano all’interno della scena… quindi è quasi come se fossimo noi ad andare controtendenza… E devi avere Spotify dalla tua parte, con le sue playlist, è molto diverso il business adesso, anche rispetto a quando abbiamo iniziato 10 anni fa!
Secondo te, cos’è che non permette il progresso nell’underground?
Penso che il più grande sia la mancanza di fondi. Se avessimo avuto più fondi noi saremmo stati in grado di crescere molto più velocemente. E anche per quanto riguarda i video musicali, se guardi la musica pop, ci sono budget completamente divers lì, e la cosa si riflette sul contenuto: ogni video musicale è molto più elaborato, quindi ovviamente più persone lo guardano. Noi ci sforziamo sempre di creare il miglior contenuto possibile, che attiri l’attenzione, stimoli la riflessione, e che sia visivamente accattivante. Ci vogliono molti fondi… con lo streaming è molto così importante. In questi giorni, l’artista non può più fare affidamento solo sulle vendite degli album, deve essere creativo e deve trovare modi per guadagnare e reinvestire nella band per continuare ad andare avanti.
Internet oggi, con le sue piattaforme di musica digitale, è una benedizione o una maledizione secondo te?
È entrambe le cose. Da un lato, è incredibile che tu possa raggiungere persone in tutto il mondo molto facilmente, e se accedi alle playlist editoriali di Spotify e di altre piattaforme importanti, puoi ottenere una vasta esposizione in modo rapido, è l’equivalente moderno della radio. Ma se non entri in quel giro, è molto facile perdersi in un mare di band, e quel punto devi provare a costruire la tua base di fan da solo. Penso che oggi devi agire in modo intelligente quando utilizzi la tecnologia e tutte queste piattaforme.
Margarita, in quanti dischi compari e quali altri progetti hai oltre agli Edge of Paradise?
“The Unknown”, è il nostro quarto album in studio. È sicuramente la nostra migliore uscita fino ad oggi, l’album è molto dinamico, stimolante, cinematografico, potente e divertente da ascoltare. Abbiamo anche inciso un EP chiamato “Alive”,nel 2017. Inoltre ho partecipato a “Magnus”, l’album di Karlsson Heart Healer. Ma gli Edge Of Paradise sono la mia vita, quindi mi dedico tutta alla mia band.
Secondo te, una band emergente, qualunque sia lo stile del metal, può avere successo solo se ha una grande etichetta alle spalle o al contrario oggi c’è più libertà di far conoscere la propria musica senza dipendere da una label?
Ci sono degli artisti capaci di farlo da soli e sono in grado di far crescere la propria base di fan! Ognuno ha il proprio cammino da compiere e oggi ci sono delle libertà e delle risorse per farlo da soli! Noi siamo un esempio, perché abbiamo creato la band e per sette anni l’abbiamo portata avanti anni senza l’aiuto di un’etichetta. Abbiamo persino realizzato il nostro album “Universe” da soli, abbiamo firmato per la Frontiers dopo che era tutto pronto, e loro lo hanno semplicemente pubblicato! I produttori veterani sono più propensi a lavorare con artisti indipendenti di questi tempi! Quindi oggi sei decisamente più padrone del tuo destino.
Cosa pensi che debba cambiare urgentemente nell’industria musicale?
Penso che sarebbe fantastico se le etichette investissero di più nello sviluppo degli artisti rock e metal!
Cosa motiva Margarita a fare metal? Cosa la spinge verso questo tipo di arte?
Voglio semplicemente fare della musica che abbia un significato per le persone! È un modo per me di condividere il mio cuore e l’anima, creando un mondo in cui le persone possano farne parte!
Qual è uno dei sogni che Margherita non è ancora riuscita a realizzare ma per il quale
sta lavorando duramente per raggiungerlo?
Voglio avere uno spettacolo teatrale davvero epico, con la nostra astronave sul palco! Vorrei avere un grande pianoforte con il quale spuntare dal backstage per alcune canzoni tra le fiamme! E, naturalmente, voglio portare il nostro spettacolo dal vivo in ogni angolo del mondo!
Edge of Paradise released their fourth studio album “The Unknown” (Frontiers Records) last September, we had the pleasure of interviewing Margarita Monet to ask her about her career.
Hi Margarita welcome to the Il Raglio del mulo, nice to have you here, how the story of Margarita and her idea of making metal began?
Hello and thank you so much for having me! Well, life kind of lead me into this direction. Growing up I played classical piano, was in theater and danced ballet, so metal wasn’t even on my radar. When I moved to Los Angeles from New York where I studied theater and music, I met guitarist Dave Bates. And Dave played rock and metal his whole life. We had similar passion and drive, and had a vision to create something of our own, that we could dedicate all our energy to! The songs we started to write together, just shaped into what they are today over the years. I always loved epic, symphonic music, that made you feel something! And since Dave played guitar, the heavy guitars added another element, and we fell into the rock/metal genre. But I honestly never imagined I’d have a band, life leads you in mysterious ways sometimes!
How is it to make metal in Europe what it means to be part of a great band as Edge of Paradise, at some point did you think to leave everything and continue a normal life, would we say?
We are based in Los Angeles, USA, so over here to be a musician is not an easy path. We feel like in Europe and some other parts of the world, music has much more support! Over here, you really need to build it from the ground up yourself, on top of being a best musician you can be, you have to be a smart business person, know how to market yourself, and somehow get money to invest in the project. These days not many labels sign artists to develop them, they want the artist to already have a foundation and making some money. So we put everything into this, booked our own tours, did everything ourselves until our album Universe, that came out in 2019, we got support from Frontiers. So the road is very difficult, long, but very rewarding when you see that the music we make makes a positive impact on someones life. I personally never thought of giving it up, just because it’s part of who I am, this music became an extension of myself, of course I have bad days, when I Feel discouraged, but I’m lucky to have Dave that has always been a rock and keeps me moving forward!
What are the main problems facing bands within the metal genre saturated scene worldwide?
Maybe trends, because we always kind of stuck to our own sound, and sometimes it doesn’t fit the current trend, that’s going on within the scene… so it’s almost like we have to create the new trend… And you have to get Spotify on your side, with the editorial playlists, it’s a very different
business now, even from when we started, 10 years ago!
In your opinion, what is it that does not allow progress to the underground?
I think the biggest is lack of funding. If we had more funding we wouldn’t have been able to move much faster. And even looking at music videos, if you look at Pop music, they have completely different budgets, there, so it reflects on the content, every music video is so elaborate, so of course more people would watch it. We always strive to create the best content we can, that’s eye catching, thought provoking, visually enticing. It takes a lot of funding… with streaming so prominent. These days, the artist can’t just rely on album sales anymore, there has to be more creative ways to make income to reinvest in the band to keep making content…
The internet today with digital music platforms, is a blessing or a curse in your opinion?
It’s both. On one side, it’s amazing that you can reach people from all over the world so easily, and if you get on Spotify and other steaming platforms editorial playlists, you can get vast exposure quick, it’s like modern day radio. But if you can’t then, it’s so easy to get lost in the sea of other bands, so you have to keep building your fanbase all on your own. I think you have to be smart these days in the ways to use technology and all these platforms.
Margarita, how many recorded materials have participated, and what other projects do you have besides Edge of Paradise?
“The Unknown”, is our fourth studio album. It’s definitely our best music to date, the album is so dynamic, thought provoking, cinematic, empowering and so much fun to listen to. We also have EP called “Alive”, that we released in 2017. In addition I participated in Magnus Karlsson’s album “Heart Healer”. But Edge Of Paradise is my life, so I dedicate everything to my band.
In your words, an emerging band, whatever the style of metal, can only succeed if it has a great label behind its art or on the contrary, today we have more freedom to be able to make our music known without depending on a label?
Having support of a label definitely helps with exposure, and of course, if the label can help
invest, it would help greatly with making better content. But I don’t think a band can only
succeed with a help of a label. So many artists are doing it on their own, and are able to grow their fanbase! Everyone has their own journey and yes, today there is freedom and resources to do this on your own! We are kind of an example of that, because we’ve built up the band for
seven years without the help of a label, and we made our album “Universe” ourselves, we only got signed by Frontiers after we created the album, and they released it! And veteran producers
work with independent artists these days all the time! So these days, you’re definitely more of a master of your own destiny.
What do you think needs to change urgently in the music industry?
I think it would be great if labels invested more into development of artists in rock and metal genres!
What motivates Margarita to make metal? What passion moves you to make the art
of metal move?
I just want to make music that has meaning to people! It’s a way for me to share my heart and soul and create a world that people can be a part of!
Which is one of the dreams that Margarita has not yet been able to fulfill but that they are working hard to achieve at this time?
I want to have a really epic stage show, with our spaceship on stage! It has to have a grand piano, emerge from the bottom of the stage for some of the songs, and lots of fire! And of course, we want to bring our live show to every corner of the world!
