Forse era scritto nelle stelle che prima o poi gli Ahab e il capolavoro di Jules Verne “20000 leghe sotto i mari” si sarebbero incontrati. “The Coral Tombs” (Napalm Records \ All Noir) è l’ennesimo grandioso incubo marino partorito dalla band tedesca, ne abbiamo discusso con il batterista Cornelius.
Ciao Cornelius, dopo il vostro precedente acclamatissimo album “The Boats Of The Glenn Carrig”, avete impiegato otto anni per pubblicare un nuovo disco. Avete sentito il peso della responsabilità di garantire un grande successore al vostro quarto album?
Assolutamente! All’inizio sembra sempre un peso. Registriamo e pubblichiamo solo musica di cui siamo convinti al 100%. I nostri album sono sempre il meglio che siamo in grado di offrire in quel preciso momento. Quindi quando pubblichiamo qualcosa, mi capita sempre di pensare “come mai faremo a incidere di nuovo un album che sia figo come questo?”. Avverto una responsabilità nei nostri confronti, in primis. Avere una band perde ogni significato non appena smetti di sfidare te stesso. E sfidarci significa scrivere canzoni che ci piacciono, in primo luogo. Che siano passati otto anni questa volta non ha cambiato tutto questo, almeno fino alla data in cui abbiamo seriamente iniziato a scrivere le nuove canzoni di “The Coral Tombs”.
“The Coral Tombs” è ispirato al capolavoro di Jules Verne “20000 leghe sotto i mari”, era scritto nelle stelle che prima o poi la vostra musica e questo capolavoro letterario si sarebbero incontrati, sei d’accordo con me?
Beh, sì, haha… Anche seo libro è in circolazione da un bel po’ di tempo, tutti noi siamo stati affascinati dal film Disney nella nostra infanzia. Ma la storia non sembrava dare spazio a riff distorti e a grugniti death metal. Questa opinione è cambia quando abbiamo letto il libro. Quindi, ancora una volta, abbiamo avuto la la prova che la lettura aiuta.
Durante i tuoi tour passati, hai mai visitato Les Machines de l’île a Nantes, l’isola dove alcuni artisti hanno costruito le fantastiche macchine di Verne?
Hmmmm, aspetta…. Nel nostro tour con Mammoth Storm e High Fighter siamomstati a Nantes. Ho dovuto mandare un messaggio agli altri membri della band per scoprirlo. Secondo loro, Chris e Stephan ci sono andati. Daniel ed io eravamo ovviamente ubriachi… Ma non ho prove certe, posso solo fare affidamento su quello che mi è stato detto, haha!

Cosa è arrivato prima, il tuo amore per la letteratura o per la musica?
Questa è in realtà un’ottima domanda. Ricordo che nella mia infanzia ho letteralmente divorato libri. Ma la musica è sempre esistita, quindi davvero non posso dirlo. Ma entrambe sono state con me sin dalla prima infanzia, questo è certo!
Dal punto di vista musicale questo è forse il tuo album più vario ma anche il più estremo…
Penso di sì, sì. È un po’ presto per parlare dell’album nella sua interezza, perché non ne ho ancora una visione personale. Ma pensando a quello che abbiamo fatto musicalmente, immagino che sia, in effetti, il più vero.
Come sono nate le collaborazioni con Chris Noir di Ultha e Greg Chandler di Esoteric?
Stavamo cercando una voce che offrisse un netto contrasto con quella profonda di Daniel per l’intro. Poiché ci piacciono le urla assolutamente disperate di Chris, gli abbiamo semplicemente chiesto se gli sarebbe piaciuto contribuire al nostro album. Greg Chandler è un amico di lunga data degli Achab. Gli Esoteric hanno avuto una grande influenza sugli Achab, specialmente durante il periodo della fondazione. Quindi era solo una questione di tempo prima che accadesse un qualcosa di simile a questa collaborazione.
Durante il tour di quattro date di novembre, avete suonato le nuove canzoni? Come hanno reagito i vostri fan?
Sì, abbiamo suonato “Colossus of the Liquid Graves” e “Mobilis in Mobili”. Alla gente pare che siano piaciute molto. In generale posso dire che ci sono alcune canzoni nel nuovo disco che sembrano funzionare molto bene sul palco.
Quali sono i vostri prossimi appuntamenti dal vivo?
Il 14 gennaio terremo il release party di “The Coral Tombs” in una chiesa a Braunschweig, in Germania. Abbiamo alcune date confermate e altre che sono in contrattazione, proprio ora. Ad essere onesti, ho dimenticato quali sono confermate e quali no. Quindi immagino che sia più facile per voi controllare sulla nostra homepage ahab-doom.de, haha…
Perhaps it was written in the stars that sooner or later Ahab and Jules Verne’s masterpiece “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” would meet. “The Coral Tombs” (Napalm Records \ All Noir) is yet another great marine nightmare born from the German band, we discussed about it with the drummer Cornelius.
Hi Cornelius, after your much acclaimed album “The Boats Of The Glenn Carrig”, you needed eight years, to release a new record. Did you feel the weight of responsibility to grant a great follow up to your fourth album?
Absolutely! It always feels like a weight at first. We only record and release music we are 100% convinced by. Our albums always are the best what we are able to deliver at this very point in time. So when we release something it´s always the same that I think “how are we ever gonna make an album again that is as cool as this one?”. I feel a responsibility for ourselves, in the first place. Having a band loses its point as soon, as you stop challenging yourselves. And challenging means writing songs we like ourselves, in the first place. That it has been eight years this time didn’t change, until the date when we seriously started writing new songs for “the Coral Tombs”.
“The Coral Tombs” is inspired by Jules Verne’s masterpiece “20000 Leagues Under The Sea”, It was written in the stars that sooner or later your music and this literary masterpiece would meet, do you agree with me?
Well, yes, haha… This book has been around for quite some time, actually. All of us have been fascinated by the Disney movie in our childhoods. But the story never seemed to give room for heavily distorted riffs and death metal grunts. This changed, when we read the book. So, again, there is proof that reading helps, in fact.
During your past tours, have you ever visited Les Machines de l’île in Nantes, the island where some artists built Verne’s fantastic machines?
Hmmmm, wait… On our tour with Mammoth Storm and High Fighter we were in Nantes. …I just had to text my bandmember to find out. According to them, Chris and Stephan were there. Daniel and me were drunk obviously… But I have no proof here, I have to rely on what I was told, haha!

Did your love for literature or music come first?
This is actually a very good question. I remember that I literally swallowed books in my childhood. But music always had been around, so I really can´t tell. But both of them have been with me since early childhood, that´s for sure!
From a musical point of view this is perhaps your most varied album but also the most extreme…
I think so, yes. It is a little bit early to talk about the album in its entireness, because I don´t have the personal distance to it, yet. But thinking of what we did here musically, I guess it is, in fact, the most veried one.
How did the collaborations with Chris Noir of Ultha and Greg Chandler of Esoteric come about?
We were looking for voice that delivers a harsh contrast to Daniel deep voice for the intro. For we like Chris´ utterly desperate screams we just asked him if he´d like to contribute to our album. Greg Chandler has been a long term friend of Ahab. Esoteric have been a major influence on Ahab, especially during the founding time. So it was just a matter of time until something like this collaboration would happen.
During the November four dates tour, did you play the new songs? How did your fans react?
Yes, we played “Colossus of the Liquid Graves” and “Mobilis in Mobili”. People seemed to like them very much. Generally I can say that there are quite some songs on the new record wich seem to work very well on stage.
What’s about your next live dates?
On January, 14th will play a release show for “the Coral Tombs” in a church in Braunschweig, Germany.We have a few confirmed dates and some more that are being discussed, right now. To be honest, I somehow lost, wich ones are confirmed and wich arent´. So I guess, it´s easiest to check our homepage ahab-doom.de, haha…
