I Manticora hanno iniziato nel 1997 come gruppo power metal, nel tempo hanno sviluppato un proprio stile, però il nuovo album “Mycelium” (Mighty Music) si allontana dagli elementi sinfonici che hanno caratterizzato i dischi precedenti e si caratterizza per un suono più arrabbiato e crudo che mai! Abbiamo fatto una piccola chiacchierata con la chitarra solista Stefan Johansson per saperne di più di questo nuovo capolavoro…
Benvenuto Stefanla , Mighty Music presenta il vostro ultimo album in questo modo: “il nuovo lavoro, è meno sinfonico e con un approccio più arrabbiato e crudo, con l’aggressività come focus principale”. Sei d’accordo?
Assolutamente! Il nostro ultimo album sotto la Mighty Music sancisce un allontanamento dagli elementi sinfonici che hanno caratterizzato alcuni dei nostri lavori precedenti. Questo approccio più aggressivo era intenzionale e non potremmo essere più orgogliosi del nuovo album! Ogni traccia di questa nuova uscita testimonia il nostro impegno nell’esplorare un panorama musicale più “primitivo” e senza filtri. La composizione è guidata da un senso di urgenza, dagli implacabili riff di chitarra alle fragorose percussioni, ogni elemento è stato accuratamente realizzato per contribuire all’intensità e all’aggressività complessiva che definisce questo viaggio musicale.
Perché avete preferito un approccio DIY?
Kristian ha lanciato l’idea di produrre il nostro album con il resto della band e abbiamo passato innumerevoli ore a parlare dei dettagli del processo. Il fascino era rappresentato, alla fine, dall’immensa libertà che offriva. Abbiamo potuto registrare al nostro ritmo e concentrarci davvero su ogni traccia. È diventato un modo per testare i nostri limiti e vedere fino a che punto potevamo arrivare da soli. Questa decisione ci ha aperto un ventaglio completamente nuovo di possibilità e prospettive nel nostro viaggio di creazione e produzione di musica.
Se non sbaglio, questo è il primo concept album che realizzi dopo “The Black Circus Part 1 and 2”. Come è arrivata l’ispirazione per “Mycelium”? E di cosa tratta?
In realtà, i nostri due album più recenti, “To Kill To Live To Kill” e “To Live To Kill To Live”, formano un concept doppio album, ciascuno pubblicato indipendentemente. Questi album sono basati su un romanzo horror scritto dal nostro cantante, Lars F. Larsen. Durante la creazione di “Mycelium”, abbiamo inizialmente esplorato vari concetti che nel tempo non sono riusciti convincerci pienamente. Ci siamo seduti intorno a un tavolo e abbiamo riconsiderato il tema e questa volta Lars ha proposto l’idea accattivante del Día De Los Muertos, con funghi e micelio. Ispirati dal suo suggerimento, ci siamo immersi ancora una volta nel processo creativo. Dopo una notte di discussioni davanti ad alcune birre, abbiamo immaginato di creare una narrazione che coinvolgesse il micelio, il mondo sotterraneo, i demoni e i fantasmi. A questo punto, avevamo già fatto un brainstorming di idee per video e altro, ormai convinti che fosse la direzione perfetta per il nostro progetto. Il tema centrale ruota attorno ai defunti e alla nostra capacità di onorare e ricordare i nostri antenati. In tutto il mondo ci sono varie festività stagionali come Halloween, Dia De Los Muertos, Obon, Pitru Paksha e altri che condividono un filo conduttore: il ricordo e la celebrazione della vita di coloro che sono morti. Nella nostra società moderna, sembra esserci una tendenza a trascurare l’importanza di esprimere gratitudine a coloro che ci hanno preceduto, individui il cui contributo ha gettato le basi per ciò che siamo oggi. La trama è questa:
nella luce eterna dove le anime dei morti dimorano nell’aldilà, prosperando sull’energia del ricordo dei vivi, alcune anime sono indebolite, a causa dei loro figli viventi, amici, familiari e altre entità che hanno conosciuto per tutta la vita, che si stanno dimenticando di loro. I ricordi si stanno indebolendo e quando le anime dei morti si indeboliscono, lasciano spazio a un vasto esercito di demoni, per infliggere enormi quantità di dolore a quelle anime indebolite, cosa che consente ai ai demoni di usare le anime come porte verso il mondo di i vivi. Sulla Terra, le altre estremità delle porte sono l’acque fresche di sorgente che gli esseri umani bevono e i funghi che mangiano in autunno: il colpevole è il micelio. Quando si beve l’acqua/si mangia il micelio, i demoni hanno accesso – attraverso lo spirito dell’anima posseduta/deceduta – per entrare dentro l’essere umano e possederlo attraverso il dolore. Da quel momento in poi, l’inferno sulla Terra attende chiunque incroci il cammino dei posseduti. Omicidi, omicidi, stupri, violenza folle! Niente può o fermerà il demone. L’unico modo per evitare una totale invasione di demoni sulla Terra è assicurarsi che i vivi che sono stati in contatto con un’anima defunta, mentre erano in vita, ricordino i loro antenati, quando non ci saranno più.
Preferisci lavorare su singoli brani o creare album con brani legati tra loro da un concept?
Direi la seconda. Per me, la sfida è creare suoni e canzoni che catturino l’atmosfera unica di un concept, e nello stile Manticora. È una sfida entusiasmante che mi incoraggia a concentrarmi davvero su ogni canzone come songwriter. In questo processo, la chiave è vedere l’album come un’unità completa e assicurarsi che ci sia un’atmosfera coerente in tutto.
Qual è il tuo brano preferito di “Mycelium” e perché?
Rispondere è impegnativo; è come dover scegliere tra i miei figli! Spicca “Necropolitans”. È un pezzo potente con un ritornello che svetta e sono particolarmente attratto dal suo suono aggressivo. Sono particolarmente orgoglioso dell’assolo che ho realizzato! Poi c’è “Golem Sapiens” una traccia che, per me, incarna una qualità schizofrenica. Giocare a questa intricata bestia richiede di ricordare numerosi elementi e sorprende con colpi di scena inaspettati.
Secondo me, “Mycelium” è uno dei nostri classici senza tempo. L’atmosfera malinconica in tutta la canzone si fonde perfettamente e il ritornello edificante crea dipendenza.
Suonerete “Mycelium” dal vivo per intero o eseguirete solo alcune canzoni? Se ne suonerete solo alcuni, quali brani avete scelto?
Temo di non poter ancora rivelare la nostra scaletta per i prossimi concerti — dovrai venire a vedere lo spettacolo! Al momento non abbiamo intenzione di eseguire l’intero album dal vivo. Abbiamo un vasto catalogo alle spalle e sarebbe un peccato trascurare le creazioni precedenti. Proprio come creare un album, assemblare una scaletta significa assicurarsi che integri lo spettacolo e rimanga diversificata. Tuttavia, state tranquilli, includeremo sicuramente alcuni brani del nuovo album nei nostri prossimi spettacoli. Non vediamo l’ora di andare in giro ed eseguire questi nuovi brani per voi ragazzi!
Avete già qualche data live in programma?
Abbiamo in programma diverse esibizioni dal vivo nei prossimi mesi! A febbraio diamo il via al Metalized Tour 2024 in Danimarca insieme ad Artillery, Demolizer ed Exelerate. Successivamente, calcheremo il palco dell’Art Rock Festival in Germania ad aprile. Siamo inoltre entusiasti di annunciare che il 26 maggio riscalderemo il pubblico per i leggendari Blind Guardian a Tilburg, Paesi Bassi. Potrete anche vederci esibirci all’incredibile festival metal, Metaldays, il 31 luglio. Restate sintonizzati per ulteriori aggiornamenti sui nostri siti ufficiali!
In passato avete pubblicato due album con un’etichetta italiana, la Scarlet Records, ma non ricordo se vi siete mai esibiti qui in Italia! Lo avete fatto o vorreste farlo?
Ci siamo già esibiti in Italia in passato, e quello più recente ha avuto luogo nel 2019 al Barrio’s Live di Milano. Saremmo assolutamente lieti di avere la possibilità di suonare in Italia ancora una volta se si presentasse l’opportunità. L’Italia ha una scena metal vibrante e ci piace moltissimo esibirci lì. Abbiamo anche alcuni grandi fan italiani che ci dicono che gli farebbe piacere riaverci, quindi tenete d’occhio questo spazio!

Manticora started out in 1997 as a power metal outfit, has developed their own style, but the new album “Mycelium” (Mighty Music) is a departure from the symphonic elements that have characterized the previous records and sounds angrier and raw then ever! We had a little chat for about with the lead guitar Stefan Johansson about this new masterpiece…
Welcome, Mighty Music presents your new album in this way: “the new work, is less symphonic and with an angrier and rawer approach, with aggression as the main focus”. Do you agree?
Absolutely! Our latest album under Mighty Music is a departure from the symphonic elements that may have characterized some of our previous work. This more aggressive approach was intentional, and we couldn’t be prouder of the new album! Each track on this new release is a testament to our commitment to exploring a more “primal” and unfiltered musical landscape. The composition is driven by a sense of urgency, from the relentless guitar riffs to the thunderous percussion, every element has been carefully crafted to contribute to the overall intensity and aggression that defines this musical journey.
Why did you prefer a do-it-yourself approach?
Kristian pitched the idea of producing our own album with the rest of the band and we spent countless hours talking about the ins and outs of the process. The allure ultimately was the immense freedom it provided. We could record at our own pace and really focus on each track. It became a way to test our limits and see how far we could go on our own. This decision opened a whole new world of possibilities and perspectives in our journey of creating and producing music.
If I’m not mistaken, this is the first concept album you’ve made since “The Black Circus Part 1 and 2”. How did the inspiration come for “Mycelium”? And what is the concept about?
Actually, our two most recent albums, “To Kill To Live To Kill” and “To Live To Kill To Live,” form a concept double album, each released independently. These albums are based on a horror novel penned by our lead singer, Lars F. Larsen. During the creation of “Mycelium,” we initially explored various concepts that failed to resonate with us over time. Going back to the drawing board, we reconsidered the theme, and this time, Lars proposed the captivating idea of Día De Los Muertos, featuring mushrooms and mycelium. Inspired by his suggestion, we immersed ourselves once again in the creative process. Following a night of discussions over some beers, we envisioned crafting a narrative involving mycelium, the underworld, demons, and ghosts. At this juncture, we had already brainstormed ideas for videos and more, making it feel like the perfect direction for our project. The central theme revolves around the deceased and our capacity to honour and recollect our ancestors. All over the world there are various seasonal festivals such as Halloween, Dia De Los Muertos, Obon, Pitru Paksha, and others that share a common thread — the remembrance and celebration of the lives of those that have passed. In our modern society, there seems to be a tendency to overlook the importance of expressing gratitude to those who preceded us, individuals whose contributions laid the foundation for who we are today. The storyline goes like this: In the eternal light where the souls of the dead dwell in the afterlife, thriving on the remembrance-energy of the living, some souls are weakened, due to their living children, friends, family and other entities they have known throughout their lives, forgetting about them. The memories are weakening, and when the souls of the dead are weakening, they leave room for a vast army of demons, to inflict massive amounts of pain towards those weakened souls – allowing for the demons to use the souls as gateways to the world of the living. On Earth, the other ends of the gateways are the fresh spring water that humans drink and the mushrooms they eat in the fall – the Mycelium is the culprit. When water is drunk/Mycelium is eaten, the demons will have access – through the spirit of the possessed/deceased soul – to pass on to the human being and to possess said human through even more pain. From then on, hell on Earth awaits, for anyone who crosses the path of the possessed. Murder, killings, rape, mad violence! Nothing can or will stop the demon. The only way to avoid a pure invasion of demons on Earth is to make sure that the living who were in contact with a deceased soul, while alive, remembers their ancestors, when they are no more.
Do you prefer to work on individual songs or create albums with tracks linked together by a concept?
I would say the latter. For me, the challenge is creating sounds and songs that capture the unique mood of a concept, and in the Manticora style. It’s an exciting challenge that encourages me to really focus on each song as a songwriter. In this process, the key is to see the album as a complete unit and make sure there’s a cohesive feel throughout.
What is your favourite track from “Mycelium” and why?
Answering that is challenging; it’s like having to choose between my children! “Necropolitans” stands out. It’s a forceful piece with a chorus that soars, and I’m drawn to its aggressive sound. I’m especially proud of the solo I crafted for it! Then there’s “Golem Sapiens,” a track that, for me, embodies a schizophrenic quality. Playing this intricate beast requires recalling numerous elements, and it surprises with unexpected twists. “Mycelium” ranks among our timeless classics, in my opinion. The melancholic atmosphere throughout the song blends seamlessly, and the uplifting chorus is addictive.
Will you play “Mycelium” in full live or will you only perform a few songs? If you will only play a few, which tracks did you choose?
I’m afraid I can’t disclose our setlist for the upcoming gigs just yet— you’ll have to come and see the show! We don’t currently have any plans to perform the entire album live. We have a vast back catalogue, and it would be a shame to overlook earlier creations. Much like crafting an album, assembling a setlist is about ensuring it complements the show and remains diverse. However, rest assured, we’ll definitely include some tracks from the new album in our upcoming shows. We can’t wait to get out there and perform these new tracks for you guys!
Do you already have any live dates scheduled?
We have got several live performances lined up over the next few months! In February, we kick off the Metalized Tour 2024 in Denmark alongside Artillery, Demolizer and Exelerate. Following that, we’ll be rocking the stage at the Art Rock Festival in Germany in April. We are also excited to announce that on 26 May, we will be warming up the crowd for the legendary Blind Guardian in Tilburg, Netherlands. In the past you released two albums with an Italian label, Scarlet Records, but I don’t remember if you ever performed here in Italy! Have you done it or would you like to do it?
We have performed in Italy before, and our most recent one took place in 2019 at Barrio’s Live in Milano. We would absolutely welcome the chance to play in Italy once more if an opportunity arises. Italy has a vibrant metal scene, and we thoroughly enjoy performing there. We also have some great Italian fans that tell us they would love to have us back, so watch this space!
