I Paragon stavano per sciogliersi dopo l’uscita del precedente album della band “Controlled Demolition”, per fortuna hanno cambiato idea e ora sono usciti con il nuovo full-length “Metalation” (Massacre Records / All Noir). Una seconda vita per una creatura che ormai è diventata una questione di famiglia, come ci ha raccontato Martin Christian…
Benvenuto Martin, il vostro nuovo album “Metalation” è uscito da qualche giorno, siete soddisfatti del risultato ottenuto?
Siamo abbastanza contenti delle reazioni, abbiamo avuto un’ottima risposta dalla stampa e dai media online, anche gli amici e le altre band sono rimasti colpiti. Quindi credo che abbiamo fatto qualcosa di giusto con l’album.
Devo essere onesto, al primo ascolto “Metalation” non mi ha convinto molto, ma giorno dopo giorno, ascolto dopo ascolto, l’album è cresciuto dentro di me e oggi lo trovo uno dei vostri lavori migliori. Questa esperienza è capitata solo a me o avete raccolto commenti simili da altri ascoltatori?
In genere la maggior parte delle persone è rimasta subito convinta, poiché l’album è un po’ più orecchiabile e melodico rispetto agli ultimi album, ma penso anche che sia “in crescita” perché più lo si ascolta e più ci si diventa dipendenti.
Vorresti presentare il nuovo batterista, Jason Wöbcke?
Jason è in realtà mio figlio ed è nato intorno all’uscita di “The Dark Legacy” nel 2003! Probabilmente è stato concepito a Wacken! Quindi è cresciuto ascoltando Paragon, ha imparato a suonare la batteria all’età di sei anni ed è un batterista tosto.
Ma è vero che a un certo punto avete deciso di fare un ultimo spettacolo e di sciogliere la band dopo l’uscita dell’album? Cosa vi ha fatto cambiare idea?
Beh, non si ringiovanisce e dopo molti problemi con la riorganizzazione della formazione dopo la pandemia, alcuni dei membri principali stavano pensando di chiudere lì. È stato allora che sono arrivato in loro soccorso e ho deciso, nonostante fossi impegnato con l’altra mia band, di salvare la situazione, di rientrare e di portare con me Jason. Sono il fondatore della band e non potevo affondare la corazzata!
Immagino che la vita dei musicisti in questi anni non sia facile, prima la pandemia, poi l’aumento dei costi dei tour, i magri guadagni dallo streaming: come vedi il futuro della musica e degli spettacoli dal vivo?
È sempre stato difficile, ma è diventato ancora più difficile. Cerchiamo di ridurre i costi di registrazione facendo la maggior parte del lavoro a casa, come le chitarre, il basso e le voci guida che sono state fatte nello studio di casa di Jan Bünning. Anche gli spettacoli dal vivo sono diventati più difficili con meno location e prezzi più alti per i viaggi e tutto il resto necessario per organizzare uno spettacolo. Ma se ami fare musica non ti interessa. Non siamo mai stati nel giro per diventare ricchi e famosi!
Torno alla domanda precedente per parlare del testo della canzone “Metalation”, una vera dichiarazione d’amore per il metal, che farebbe morire d’invidia i Manowar! Seriamente, quando è iniziato il tuo amore per il metal e cosa mantiene viva la fiamma della passione dopo anni?
Beh, tutti noi eravamo lì all’inizio. I miei primi concerti sono stati nel 1980, ho visto Maiden, Motörhead, Saxon, Priest. Amiamo tutti quella roba da oltre 44 anni, tranne ovviamente Jason. Anche a lui piace la roba vecchia, ma essendo un fanatico di batteria veloce e balst beat, ascolta anche molto modern metal.
Preferisci comporre una canzone pesante e veloce o una power ballad come, ad esempio, “My Asylum”?
Oh, dipende dal mio umore, ma in genere amo scrivere canzoni veloci e mid-tempo.
Avete in programma delle date live?
Sì, abbiamo un triplo pacchetto di spettacoli con i nostri amici Iron Savior e Mystic Prophecyy in Germania e stiamo pianificando alcuni festival nel 2025 come l’Headbanger’s Open Air e forse anche un Paragon Show come headliner per il nostro 35° anniversario.
Prima di chiudere, vorrei soddisfare una curiosità: la copertina di “The Final Command” dell’omonimo album dei Molly Hatchet: è solo una coincidenza o volevi rendere omaggio a quel full-length storico della band americana?
Hmm, più una coincidenza, ma possedevo e mi piaceva quell’album degli Hatchet!

Welcome Martin, your new album “Metalation” has been out for a few days, are you satisfied with the result obtained?
We are quite happy with the reactions so far, we have very good response from print and online media also friends and other bands are impressed. So I guess we have done something right with the album.
I have to be honest, at first listening “Metalation” did not convince me much, but day after day, listen after listen, the album grew inside me and today I find it one of your best works. Did this experience happen only to me, or have you collected similar comments from other listeners?
Generally most people were directly convinced, as the album is a bit more catchy and melodic than the last few albums, but I think it also a “grower” as you get more and more addicted to it, the more you listen to it.
Would you like to introduce the new drummer, Jason Wöbcke?
Jason is actually my son and was born around the release of “The Dark Legacy” in 2003! He was probably made in Wacken! So he basically grew up listening to Paragon, learned to play the drums from age six and is a badass drummer.
But is it really true that at a certain point you had decided to do one last show and split the band after the release of the album? What made you change your mind?
Well we all don’t get any younger and after many problems with resetting the lineup after the pandemic, some of the core members were thinking of calling it a day. This is when I came to the rescue and decided in spite of being busy with my other band so save the situation and rejoin and bring Jason along. I am the band founder and could not the battleship sink!
I imagine that the life of musicians in these years is not easy, first the pandemic, then the increase in tour costs, the poor earnings from streaming: how do you see the future of music and live shows?
It was always tough but it has gotten tougher. We try to reduce recording costs by doing most of it at home, like guitars, bass and guide vocals were done in Jan Bünning´s home studio. Live shows have also gotten more difficult with fewer locations and higher prices for travelling and everything else which is necessary to set up a show. But if you love doing music you don’t care. We were never in the game to get rich and famous!
I’m going back to the previous question to talk about the lyrics of the song “Metalation”, a true declaration of love for metal, which would make Manowar die of envy! Seriously, when did your love for metal begin and what keeps the flame of passion alive after years?
Well, all of us were right there in the beginning. My first concerts were in 1980, seeing Maiden, Motörhead, Saxon, Priest. We all love the stuff for over 44 years, except of course Jason. He likes the old stuff as well, but being a friend of fast drums and stuff like balst beats, he also listens to a lot of modern metal.
Do you prefer to compose a heavy and fast song or a power ballad like, for example, “My Asylum”?
Oh, that depends on my mood, but generally I love writing mid tempo and fast songs most.
Do you have any live dates planned?
Yes, we have a triple pack of shows with our friends of Iron Savior and Mystic Prophecyy in Germany and are planning some Festivals in 2025 like the Headbanger´s Open Air and maybe also a 35th years of Paragon Show as headliner.
Before closing, I would like to satisfy a curiosity: the cover artwork of “The Final Command” of the eponymous album by Molly Hatchet: is it just a coincidence or did you want to pay tribute to that historic full length of the American band?
Hmm, more of a coincidence, but I did own and like that Hatchet album!
