Dopo la tragica perdita del batterista Mario Vico, il power trio di Barcellona Martin Templum Domini ha pubblicato “Mankind” con Lion Music Records. Nella nostra intervista esclusiva, Carlos Martín e Iván Martín hanno parlato della collaborazione con il leggendario cantante Göran Edman, dellla realizzazione dell’album e di come stanno portando avanti l’eredità di Mario.

Ciao Carlos e Ivan, innanzitutto le mie condoglianze per la perdita di Mario Vico, una tragedia terribile proprio poco prima dell’uscita di “Mankind” l’11 febbraio. In che modo avete deciso di onorare la sua memoria con questo album, soprattutto rispetto al vostro passato strumentale in “Martin Templum Domini” e “The Dark Matter”?
Carlos: Ciao Giuseppe. Sai, ho deciso che il modo migliore per ricordare Mario era continuare la sua eredità portando avanti l’album “Mankind”. Era uno dei batteristi migliori che abbia mai avuto, perderlo è stato un colpo durissimo.
Ivan: Sì, è stato davvero un momento difficile, ma vogliamo rendere giustizia a Mario con la musica. “Mankind” cerca di raccogliere tutto quello che abbiamo fatto finora, ma allo stesso tempo di far evolvere il nostro suono.
“Mankind” segna un cambiamento importante con la partecipazione di Göran Edman (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), quello che avete definito un “sogno che diventa realtà”. Come è nata questa collaborazione? Come ha influenzato i brani e gli arrangiamenti?
Carlos: Abbiamo pensato che avere Göran fosse la ciliegina sulla torta. Ho dovuto rivedere tutti gli arrangiamenti vocali come se fossi un cantante, cambiando l’interpretazione da strumentale a vocale. Lavorare con lui è stato semplicissimo, è un cantante straordinario e ha saputo adattarsi perfettamente al progetto. È stata un’esperienza fantastica e ha davvero trasformato alcune canzoni in veri pezzi forti.
Dopo anni di power metal totalmente strumentale, preferite comporre pezzi senza voce o con cantato, come su “Mankind”?
Ivan: Noi amiamo la musica strumentale, ma se ci fosse la possibilità di avere Göran su tutto un un nuovo lavoro, ci piacerebbe fare qualcosa con le voci nello stile della canzone di questo album.
“The Dark Matter” esplorava temi distopici e atmosfere infernali, cosa volete raggiungere con “Mankind”? Quali nuove emozioni o suoni volete sollecitare?
Ivan: Con “Mankind” volevamo un lavoro pieno di melodie, riff potenti e un po’ di influenze neoclassiche. Crediamo che non passerà inosservato e speriamo che diventi uno degli album più interessanti del 2026.
Il vostro trio di virtuosi – chitarra, basso, batteria – è sempre stato il vostro marchio di fabbrica. Come avete spinto oltre i limiti su “Mankind”?
Carlos: Questo album è stato un’evoluzione naturale per noi. Non lo vedo come migliore de “The Dark Matter”, ma più come un passo avanti nella nostra collaborazione e nel nostro modo di suonare insieme.
I live come quello a Caldes de Malavella vi hanno fatto conoscere in Europa. Dopo la perdita di Mario, cosa succederà con i concerti? Avete in mente un tributo, nuovi batteristi, tour o collaborazioni?
Ivan: È un momento complicato, ci sentiamo un po’ orfani senza Mario. Però sia io che Carlos vogliamo continuare a lavorare sul progetto e stiamo valutando diverse possibilità per portare avanti la sua eredità.
Carlos, come chitarrista, come hai costruito i tuoi assoli su “Mankind”, tenendo conto del cantato e dello stile power/heavy della band?
Carlos: Gli assoli sono studiati per essere equilibrati: niente eccessi o lunghe sfuriate. Ogni traccia è un assolo a sé, dall’inizio alla fine. Lavorare con Göran è stato facile e ci siamo concentrati soprattutto sul rendere le parti melodiche più armoniose e fluide.
“Mankind” sta ricevendo attenzione internazionale crescente (radio e stampa in USA, Europa e Giappone). Quanto ha cambiato il vostro percorso dal 2017 a oggi?
Ivan: Avere il supporto di un’etichetta come Lion Music è stato fondamentale. Siamo molto felici e grati a Lars per tutto quello che ha fatto.
Carlos: Dal 2017 a oggi la risposta del pubblico è stata incredibile. Ora la gente nel mondo sa chi sono i Martin Templum Domini e cosa facciamo. Ora spetta al pubblico aiutare questo album a scalare le classifiche internazionali.
Quali sono le vostre speranze per il 2026 e quale consiglio dareste alle band power metal emergenti di Barcellona?
Ivan: Speriamo che “Mankind” faccia davvero la differenza e porti il progetto a un nuovo livello.
Carlos: Direi solo di avere umiltà e perseveranza. Alla fine, il lavoro duro paga sempre.
After the tragic loss of drummer Mario Vico, Barcelona’s virtuoso power trio Martin Templum Domini released “Mankind” via Lion Music Records. In our exclusive interview, Carlos Martín and Iván Martín talked about working with legendary vocalist Göran Edman, the album’s creation, and how they carried on Mario’s legacy.
Hello Carlos and Ivan, and condolences for the loss of Mario Vico, such a shocking tragedy right before “Mankind”‘s February 11 release. How has the band decided to honor his legacy through this album’s overarching concept or evolution, especially from your instrumental roots in “Martin Templum Domini” and “The Dark Matter”?
Carlos: Greetings Giuseppe. As you know, I’ve decided to continue Mario’s legacy and release the album “Mankind”. Mario was and will always be one of the best drummers I’ve ever had; his passing is a great loss.
Ivan: We are deeply affected by Mario’s passing, but we are committed to honoring his legacy through our music and ensuring that “Mankind” reflects the essence of our past work while evolving the band’s sound.
“Mankind” marks a shift by featuring Göran Edman (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) in what you’ve called a “dream come true.” What inspired the collaboration, how did his “outstanding performance” transform key tracks, and did it influence guitar work or arrangements?
Carlos: We thought it would be a great addition to present the song with such an important singer as Göran. I had to think as if I were a singer to do all the vocal arrangements, changing the concept from instrumental to vocal. It was very comfortable working with Göran, an incredible singer. He truly adapted perfectly to the project, and it was a wonderful experience that transformed a song into an incredible hit.
After years of fully instrumental power metal, do you prefer writing purely instrumental pieces or tracks with vocals like on “Mankind”, and why?
Ivan: We make instrumental music, but of course, if Göran were willing, we would make an album with vocals in the style of the song on the album.
With “The Dark Matter” exploring dystopian themes like “What Lies Beneath” and “Redemption,” and infernal vibes in “Inferno”/”Underworld” (“Martin Templum Domini”), what new technical or atmospheric heights does “Mankind” aim for to “light up the skies of 2026”?
Ivan: “Mankind” is an excellent work full of melodies, aggressive riffs, and a strong neoclassical influence. We are sure that this work will not leave the music industry indifferent; it will be one of the best releases of 2026.
Your virtuoso power trio sound, guitar, bass and drums, defines heavy/neo-prog metal. How did they push boundaries on “Mankind” compared to past albums?
Carlos: “Mankind” surpassing our previous work has been a natural form of maturation as a group. I don’t consider “Mankind” to be better than “The Dark Matter”, but simply an evolution of our teamwork.
Live shows like Caldes de Malavella built your European buzz. With Mario’s passing, what’s next for performances (tributes, new drummers, tours), festivals, or collabs to support “Mankind” and beyond?
Ivan: We are going through a very difficult time after Mario’s death; he has left us orphaned. But both Carlos and I are going to continue working hard to carry on the project. We are considering different options to be able to continue the legacy.
As the guitar mastermind, what influences shaped your solos on “Mankind,” balancing the new vocal elements with the band’s unique heavy/power style?
Carlos: The solos on the album are perfectly balanced; there are no heavy or excessively long solos. I consider every track to be one guitar solo from beginning to end. As I said, it was very easy working with Göran, and the only thing we did was refine the more melodic solos for a more harmonious sound.
“Mankind” arrives amid growing international attention (radio/press in USA/Europe/Japan). How has reception shaped your path since 2017?
Ivan: The support of a record label like Lion Music has been crucial in launching this work; we are very happy and grateful to Lars for his support.
Carlos: The reception as a band since 2017 has been impressive. Now the whole world knows who Martin Templum Domini are and what we do. Now it depends on the world to launch this work to the top positions in the international charts.
What are your hopes for 2026 (follow-up album, fan support), and what advice would you give to emerging virtuoso power metal acts from Barcelona’s scene?
Ivan: We hope that “Mankind” will break all established patterns and launch this project to the top.
Carlos: The only advice I could give would be humility and perseverance; in the end, God rewards us for the work we do.
