I Power Paladin tornano alla carica con “Beyond The Reach Of Enchantment”, nuovo capitolo pubblicato da ROAR / Reigning Phoenix Music, un lavoro che espande l’universo sonoro già forgiato con “With The Magic Of Windfyre Steel”, spingendo ancora più in alto il vessillo dell’heroic metal. Tra riff incandescenti, atmosfere fantasy e un approccio che unisce energia, ironia e spirito d’avventura, abbiamo parlato con Atli Guðlaugsson, cantante e frontman della band, per scoprire cosa si nasconde dietro questo nuovo volume della loro saga.
Ciao Atli, è un piacere averti su Il Raglio Del Mulo.“Beyond The Reach Of Enchantment” è un album che evolve quanto fatto in “With The Magic Of Windfyre Steel”, forgiando melodie più affilate e riff più audaci: cosa ardeva dentro di voi mentre costruivate questa saga sonora, dal primo riff all’ultima nota?
Partendo da quanto fatto per il primo album, l’obiettivo era semplicemente rendere tutto più epico, più drammatico e più divertente! Il nostro debutto è stato accolto molto bene e ci siamo divertiti così tanto a interagire con i fan che eravamo davvero entusiasti di pubblicare nuovo materiale.
Dai fulmini di “Sword Vigor” al monumentale finale di “Valediction”, l’album sembra un viaggio attraverso regni fantasy incontaminati; come avete scolpito ogni traccia affinché avesse il proprio peso epico, mantenendo il cammino avvincente dall’inizio alla fine?
Volevamo assicurarci che le canzoni fossero legate tra loro affinché l’album risultasse coerente. Una delle cose che abbiamo fatto per riuscirci è stata commissionare l’artwork prima ancora di iniziare a scrivere i brani per il disco; in questo modo avevamo qualcosa da guardare che ci ispirasse mentre lavoravamo all’opera.
Chitarre, tastiere e voce si scontrano con precisione e ferocia. Nell’arrangiare questi elementi, come decidete a cosa dare risalto, e ci sono stati momenti in cui un dettaglio inaspettato ha improvvisamente rimodellato il feeling di un brano?
Cerchiamo di mantenere un buon equilibrio durante la produzione dei brani, ma alla fine tutto dipende da ciò che si adatta meglio a ogni singola canzone. Per esempio, in questo album le tastiere hanno dovuto fare un passo indietro in alcuni pezzi come “Sword Vigor” e “Keeper Of The Crimson Dungeon”.
Rispetto al vostro debutto, l’album appare più audace, con cambi di riff e strutture che sfidano i limiti; ci sono stati momenti in cui avete intenzionalmente rotto le vostre abitudini o i vostri usi tecnici, e cosa vi ha insegnato questo sul vostro sound?
Volevamo sicuramente puntare a un suono più maturo e sperimentare un po’ di più con il nostro stile. Tuttavia, molte di queste cose avvengono in modo naturale mentre scriviamo le canzoni.
Brani come “Camelot Rock City” iniettano un’energia giocosa e una teatralità accattivante nella vostra tempesta power metal. Quanto è importante questo senso di divertimento nella vostra musica, e ci sono altre tracce in cui infrangere le regole ha dato vita all’album in modi inaspettati?
Non vogliamo mai scrivere materiale noioso, quindi inserire una certa varietà che mantenga impegnato l’ascoltatore è fondamentale per noi. Il power metal, contrariamente a quanto si crede, è un genere così vasto che ritengo offra davvero molte opzioni da esplorare, e io voglio esplorarle tutte hahah!
Presentate tracce che spaziano dal galoppo furioso di “Glade Lords Of Athel Loren” ai crescendi drammatici di “Aegis Of Eternity”, come trasmettete questa varietà nei vostri show dal vivo, e ci sono stati momenti sul palco in cui le canzoni hanno rivelato una nuova intensità che non avevate previsto in studio?
Abbiamo appena terminato il concerto per il lancio dell’album questo fine settimana, dove abbiamo suonato molti di questi brani dal vivo per la prima volta e, amico, è stato un vero sballo! Facciamo del nostro meglio per divertirci sul palco e, nel nostro caso, questo di solito si traduce in uno spettacolo divertente.
Il vostro mondo di miti e leggende è un’esplosione di immagini. Oltre alla musica, quali libri, film, giochi o opere hanno acceso la scintilla dell’ispirazione, e qualcuno di questi vi ha spinto in direzioni impreviste durante la composizione?
Sono sicuramente influenzato da ciò che mi circonda in qualsiasi momento io stia scrivendo musica. All’epoca leggevo alcuni fumetti di Spider-Man, Baldur’s Gate 3 ha avuto senz’altro un’influenza, e ho letto molto anche di Joe Abercrombie.
Osservando la risposta dei fan alla vostra miscela di power metal classico e moderno, ci sono state reazioni che vi hanno colto di sorpresa, e come queste situazioni influenzano i vostri piani per i prossimi passi del viaggio dei Power Paladin?
Soprattutto il fatto che le persone apprezzino così tanto tutto ciò che facciamo è fantastico. Abbiamo avuto molte difficoltà a scegliere i singoli per questo album e penso che questo si sia riflesso nell’accoglienza: le canzoni preferite di ognuno sono diverse, il che è piacevole da sentire.
Guardando al futuro, ci sono regni inesplorati, strumenti non convenzionali o collaborazioni epiche che sognate di affrontare e che potrebbero trasformare il sound della band? E sentite il peso della responsabilità nell’essere visti dai fan come la forza trainante della rinascita del power metal puro e incontaminato?
Non abbiamo mai sentito alcuna pressione, almeno per ora; stiamo solo scrivendo musica che ci rappresenta ed è fantastico sentire che funziona anche per gli altri. Penso che siamo già riusciti a ottenere tutto ciò che sognavamo quando abbiamo iniziato con questa band, quindi tutto ciò che verrà d’ora in avanti… sarà solo un bonus!

Between blazing riffs, fantasy-laden atmospheres and an approach that blends energy, irony and a true spirit of adventure, we spoke with Atli Guðlaugsson, the band’s singer and frontman, to uncover what lies behind this new chapter of their saga.
Hi Atli, great to have you at Il Raglio Del Mulo. With “Beyond The Reach Of Enchantment” now unleashed, an album that storms forward from “With The Magic Of Windfyre Steel” while forging sharper melodies and bolder riffs, what was burning in you as you built this sonic saga from the first riff to the final note?
Building on what we did for the first album, just do everything more epic, more dramatic and more fun! Our first album was so well received and we’ve had so much fun hearing from our fans we were really excited to release some more material.
From the lightning strikes of “Sword Vigor” to the towering finale of “Valediction”, the album feels like a ride through untamed fantasy realms; how did you sculpt each track to carry its own epic weight while keeping the journey thrilling from start to finish?
We wanted to make sure that the songs would be tied around each other so the album feels consistent. One of the things we did to achieve this was to start off by commissioning the artwork before we started writing the songs for the record, that way we had something to look at to inspire us while working on the record.
The guitars, keyboards, and vocals collide with both precision and ferocity, when arranging these elements, how do you decide which takes the spotlight, and were there moments where an unexpected detail suddenly reshaped the feel of a song?
We try to keep a good balance between things when producing the songs, but ultimately it comes down to what fits each song best so, for example, the keyboards had to take a step back on a few songs for this album like “Sword Vigor” and “Keeper Of The Crimson Dungeon”.
Compared to your debut, the album feels more daring, with twists in riffs and structures that push boundaries; were there moments where you intentionally broke your own habits or technical limits, and what did that teach you about your own sound?
We definitely wanted to build towards a more mature sound and experiment a bit more with our own sound. But a lot of these things come naturally as well while we’re writing the songs.
Songs like “Camelot Rock City” inject playful energy and catchy theatrics into the power metal storm, how important is this sense of fun in your music, and are there other tracks where bending the rules brought the album to life in unexpected ways?
We never want to write stuff that’s boring so including some variety that keeps the listener engaged is important to us. Power metal, contrary to popular belief, is such a wide genre and I feel it really gives you a lot of options to explore so I always want to explore all of them hahah!
With tracks ranging from the furious gallop of “Glade Lords Of Athel Loren” to the dramatic swells of “Aegis Of Eternity”, how do you channel that range into your live shows, and have there been moments on stage where the songs revealed new intensity you hadn’t anticipated in the studio?
We just finished our release concert this weekend where we were playing a lot of these songs live for the first time and man it was such a blast! We try our best to have fun on stage and that usually translates into a fun stage show in our case.
Your world of myths and legends bursts with imagery, beyond music, which books, films, games, or artworks sparked sparks of inspiration, and did any of them push you in directions you didn’t foresee while composing the album?
I’m definitely influenced by what I’ve got going on at any point when writing the music. I was reading a bit of Spider-Man comics at the time, Baldur’s Gate 3 definitely had an influence, and reading a lot of Joe Abercrombie as well.
Seeing fans respond to your blend of classic and modern power metal, were there reactions that caught you off guard, and how do these insights fuel your ideas for the next chapter of Power Paladin’s journey?
Mostly how much people enjoy everything we do has been great. We had a lot of trouble choosing singles for this album and I think that’s been reflected in the reception, everybody’s favourite songs are different which is nice to hear.
Looking ahead, are there unexplored realms, unconventional instruments, or epic collaborations you dream of tackling that could transform the band’s sound, and do you feel the weight of responsibility in being seen by fans as the driving force behind the revival of pure, untainted power metal?
We’ve never felt any pressure so far at least, we’re just writing music that speaks to us and it’s great to hear that it works for other people as well. I think we’ve already managed to achieve everything we dreamed of when we first started this band so everything from now on will only be a plus!
